  1. I have wondered about that myself.

Okay so a foreigner calls someone else a Farang.

That would seem to indicate they don't include themselves as being Farang.

It's like a caucasian fellow in the US calling some white guys "Crackers"

Everyone within earshot is going to do a <deleted>

Sigh.. this has nothing to do with my topic. Of course I don't refer to myself or my expat friends as Farangs, I am calling this women a Farang to point out that she was not Thai and there are clearly social differences in the acceptance of children. Of course I'm Farang!

Back to the point... why should I smack my kid??

  2. Yes, I agree newbie001, we did invade her serenity. However, I did not asked to be seated next to her, and the point is that I immediately could tell by her face that she would not appreciate us sitting next to her. If it were me, and someone else in my situation I would have smiled, even made conversation with the child to be friendly.

With regards to my use of the world farang, Im not particularly fond of the term myself, however I wanted to point out to people that this women was not Thai, but a "foreigner" here, and that is the term that Thai people use.

    Peace.

  3. The Thai lady living next door to me takes her 3-4 year old son into the yard and beats the shit out of him with a stick.

    (about twice a month)

The screams and crying are awful to hear.

Oh no, that's awful, so that's why Thai kids are so well behaved!!

  4. This is by no means the first time that I have had encounters with "miserable" old farang women, but this time my frustration (anger) has caused me to share my experience with others.

I have lived in Chiang Mai for three years now, one of the things I love about living in Thailand is the way Thai people love children and create a safe and nurturing environment for them.

I have two Sons, 5 and 3, my 5 year old had a piano lesson this morning and as I had to wait with my 3 year old Son, I decided to kill time my taking him to get his nails cut, of course I would never take my Son to a "Salon" in the UK, but this is Thailand!

On walking in, the beautiful assistants gave my Son lots of attention (he has blue eyes and blond hair). Unfortunately, they seated us next to a miserable old farang women, whom I made eye contact with and smiled, even though she looked at me she just scowled. My THREE year old Son, whom was there at MY request not his, and is a BOY with no interest in manicures, then sat quietly as the assistant proceeded to cut first his toe nails, then his finger nails. He was quiet, sometimes pulling his feet away from the assistant as he was tickled. By NO stretch of the imagination was he crying, screaming, being rude, hitting, spitting or any of the things that I consider to be "bad" behaviour. When it got to finishing his second hand he said "no more Mummy". I tried pursueding him by saying "oh come on, you've done so well, can the lady just finish..", but he had out done a three year olds ability to stay interested and proceeded to leave the chair. The beautiful assistant just smiled and said "no problem".

It was at this point, that the miserable old women spoke, and I have obviously been in Thailand for so long, that I expected her to be kind and offer some words of wisdom, but she said, sternly "what he needs is a good smack on the bottom", I was actually shocked into silence, she proceeded "if he were mine I would have done it ages ago", at which I was confused as he had been sitting quietly apart from the occasional childish behaviour (he is a child)!

As we were leaving the beautiful assistants continued to smile at my Son, and when I asked them how much they wanted they said "no charge", I told them that that was really sweet, and I will definitely return for my own manicures.

My point of posting is not to attack this miserable old farang women (ok, maybe just a little), or to vent my anger (ok, I do feel better now), but to ask you, why do you think that Thai people are so understanding and loving towards children, and old ugly (sorry, but she was) miserable farangs want them to be seen and not heard and beat them?

I really am interested to hear your replys, especially if you have had any similar experiences!

    :)

  5. these are the ones gonzos talking about at the weekend market

We got one of these hammocks around two years ago from a fair, and It's awesome, the guys told as at the time it would last for years, off course I thought it would last five minutes outside, but it's still hanging in our garden, through sun and rain it's still perfect. The kids play on it everday! I may by another one!

  6. Hi,

I had three wisdom teeth removed a few months ago at Grace. I'm 36 and needed to have them removed to undergo orthapedic work also at Grace. I've allways hated going to the dentist based on previous experiences in the uk, which is probably why my teeth were so awful in the first place. I was absolutely terrified before having my wisdom teeth removed, but new I had to get it done, I did two removals in one sitting and had three injections, there is absolutely no pain and it's so quick. The third wisdom tooth was the lower back, and once again no problems or pain with the removal but for a week or two afterwards I still had a numb tongue, the dentist warned be this could happen and after research on the internet it appears that this is perfectly normal because of the nerve placement, and it's back to normal now. Grace is not the cheapest, but it's clean, officient, English speaking, experinced staff make up for the extra bht in my opinion. Go for it & good luck!

  8. Dear OP

You are getting the kind of response that I usually get when I need assistance here in Chiang Mai. I suspect that that is becuase most of the regular posters here are Men who have Thai lady's that handle all of these things for them, so they don't actually know!

I'm a Mom with two kids & cleaning a house IS a full time job! So I have two maids, they both have their own sleeping quarters, and have one day off a week. They have occasionally asked for a Birthday off, or time off to visit a sick friend, and I am happy for them to do so. They do not have public holidays off and it would annoy me if they did, the kids are off on public holidays and that's when I need the most help! (Encase anyone comments on that, it's actually very normal for all of the farang family's I know here).

I can't believe people would be so old fashioned to think your wife should clean as well as work!! I hope I never have to wash up again! Don't these guys realise that a cleaner equals less stress, quality time with kids, more beautification time for wife, more time for sex with Husband!

  9. If your sure its the commode it self where the stoppage is, you may have to unbolt same and turn it upside down to get the fellows little toy out. A common occurrence in that the object will flush out of the bowl itself but will not go thru the trap to the sewer line. Even small hands cannot retrieve the obstruction while the commode is right side up. When the plumber/whoever suggests a new toilet, remember this post. The only parts that ever need replacement are in/on the water reservoir (breakage excepted)

Oh, ok, that's really helpful, and your'e right, I really don't want to have to pay for a whole new toilet!

  10. Hi Guys/Gals

I have a blocked toilet, think it's blocked with a toy crocodile, I had someone come twice and try to flush it out, but it's still blocked and I have my parents visiting next week.

Do you have , or can you please ask your Thai partners if they can suggest someone in Chiang Mai that unblocks toilets? Or any tips will be appreciated!

    Many thanks in advance x

    :)

  11. I personally do not agree with carrying weapons, I do not think there is any need to feel scared living in Chiang Mai and to suggest to readers living elsewhere that the need to protect yourself here is completely misleeding.

As a women who has lived in England, I have felt more safe here, even late at night on my own in tuk tuks.

If we all carry knives and guns, how many of us would have used them after way too much to drink and an argument, I know I could have shot my Husband a few times!!

I would ask the OP and other readers to read the attached article, too many peoples lives have been wasted by violence; http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11...ecord-week.html

Maybe the OP could spend more time training in martial arts, so that if someone needed help he could do more restraining then maiming, the tourist police are looking for volunteers, no knives! :)

  12. Not sure you did them any flavours, i mean favours, by posting a link to a website that's obviously under construction! :) The 'read more' link takes some beating!

Still, pretty close by to where i live, so i'll probably give them a look :D

    Aitch

If you don't mind please report back. The only place I found that had outstanding pizza was in San Sai and recently closed. If this place receives a second vote of praise, even though it's a drive for me, I'll give it a try.

Totally give them a try, I loved Rigleys, especially as they were close to us, so this place is a great alternative!

  13. Hi Guys

We were starving in town today and I picked up a copy the dining guide which had an add for Rustica Pizza on Nimmenhemen Soi 6, next to Punna Place.

So we went and it was totally the best pizza in town, nice atmosphere, wine and outside seating

<link removed as per forum rules>

The owner was really friendly and when someone is making this much effort to provide such good food we should all support it!

    Enjoy!

  14. I don't really understand why anyone would be protesting about the opening of this venue, I've seen them advertising as having live shows, that combined with being gay friendly is surely great for tourism. If people don't like the gay thang (sorry to belittle anyones sexuality), then surely Chiang Mai isn't the place for them to be living.

Does anyone know the actual opening date/party, I want to show my support and PARTY!

  15. The pizza is the best we have had here in Chiang Mai, it totally sucks if the landlord has increased the rent to such an amount, this has also happened to us with a house here. I hope that Ridgleys find another venue and continue to make great food! Good luck Ridgleys!
