Rich farang cheat poor thai. Typical. Nothing unusual about that.
Nope nothing unusual about that. That's why farangs come on holiday here. Its part of the package holiday - In between a jaunt around Bangkok and a weekend retreat in Chaing Mai is the compulsory "how to cheat a poor Thai person interactive tour".
It's a key part of TAT overseas marketing campaign to lure tourists back- Didn't you know that?

Thailand seems to have rested for some considerable time on its laurels. In part due to a combination of that monotonous drum beat that Thai rice is best, Thai people know best, and that rice farming, was, is and always shall be, at the heart of Thai culture and it simply can't change. Combine all of these elements with an introspective view of the world and its hardly surprising that countries which are genuinely open to innovation and investment surpass Thailand.
I am reminded of the old slogan : Improvise, adapt and overcome.
Words of wisdom which Thailand could do well to consider.

At the end of the day someone interviewed from the resort on Oz TV said it all, that they were worried that this murder would affect tourism , not one mention of sympathy for the families concerned, it seemed as this was just a hinderance and if one should be murdered, do it somewhere else.
Very good point

Time to wear burkas...
Or get the men to wear bikinis !!

Five years' imprisonment or a Bt200,000 fine for: - drinking alcohol
Is this only at the airport or on all flight to and from Thai airports? Sounds like the final nail in the coffin to me.
It can only apply to Thai Aiports. Once out of Thai Airspace I sure that it can't apply - Illegal to have a drink on a BA flight from Bangkok to London. Nuttier than a squirrels balls!!

"..Thai people's general lenient attitude and the country's lax law-enforcement..." AKA - If it doesn't affect me, I don't care.
The amount of crime committed by these 'transnational gangs' is dwarfed by the crime committed by Thai gangs in Thailand. A far more efficient and effective policy would be to reduce the crime committed by Thai mafias.
Burglars, card skimmers, pickpockets and con artists are small fry in the great scheme of the Thai criminal underworld.
I guess even the Thai criminals don't like competition. They probably claim it's unfair (smell the irony)

The previous government banned it and made it illegal, things have since changed.I was sure they had a ban on this type of thing regarding elephants being paraded around the streets too.
This is a shameful way to treat such a beautiful creature. The elephant should be in a nature reserve or something, doing what elephants do, bot being paraded in public.
Many things have changed but i'm not sure the unbanning and re-legalisation of bringing elephants into cities has?
This is a very sad incident that suggests that underlying poverty as the root cause of this animal abuse, as opposed to a political one.

"Thai Taxi drivers to Blockage Malaysian border claiming new regulations will impact on their livelihoods and force them into poverty"
In related news Thailand raised fees for all foreigners living here.

The Dems would have to be pretty daft to not have cleared this with the NCPO first before the book launch. I'd imagine someone, somewhere in the chain of NCPO command signed off on this one.

I want the article rewritten as - Tourist pay regular price and Thais get a discount - and it it good for the country. In reality it is us tourist that caused the prices to go up. The prices have gone up so much just how many Thais do you see at the bar and other places. They cannot afford it any more. The country needs to find a way for a person who makes $10/day can also have some enjoyment.
The USA does the same. In Orlando you can get a hotel room for $100/night but by the time they add the 'tourist' tax - yes they have a tourist tax - it can be as much as $150 (I am high with this number but the tax is huge - like 35% then the regular sales tax, etc). Heck, it might be more than $150 by now.
Why? Americans think $100 is enough but Europeans think the price is very low. They joke at how low it is. So - Orland for many years have this tax.
The whole world does it to balance things out but they know how to hide it. Go to an historial site in Virginia and show your Virginia driver's license. ooops, big discount. Go to the national parks in USA and show your USA driver's liense and buy a life time pass for $10. I believe in some leveling.
Or just make the entrance fees to all museums etc free (such as in the UK). You can't get more level than that. And remember Thailand makes a serious chunk of GDP from the tourist dollar. Making it all free would encourage more people to come into the country, give Thailand a better international public image and raise GDP.
The problem is that this dual pricing system is perceived by most Thai people to be fair. The problem is their customers see it as unfair. Rule 101 of business is that the customer is always right (if you want their business again at least)
If you got crappy service or food from a restaurant and that service / food isn't rectified, would you go back and spend more money their or would you go to another restaurant? Same principle
So level it by making it free for all. The money tourists spend in Thailand is a mere tiny fraction of what it takes to maintain these sites.

Thais are poor. Falang rich. When Thais go to Falangland, Thais always get charge expensive Falang price. So when Falang in Thailand, they should also pay expensive Falang price. This is the universal law of same same no change. If falang want to pay thai price in thailand, falang should also charge cheaper thai price to thai people while in falangland.
Could you perhaps use a map to explain where exactly falangland is located and if it has a seat at the UN?
But i do agreed in part with you - I wish I could buy wine at the same price it is in Falangland (sic) Thai price mush more expensive!!! Why not cheap Thai price Suriya4? Even Mercedes not have cheap Thai price. Falangland price much cheaper, why can't falang pay falangland price for Mercedes in Thailand. Why not have cheap Thai Price Suriya4?
You're argument is flawed.

I haven't read through all the posts and don't intend to, so if this advice or comment was made previously apologies.
For the poster as a Malaysian the next few months maybe inconvenient. However in the coming years given the movement on a common visa system currently being adopted by some member states, one would imagine this system will be expanded in due time to allow the freer movement of labour of ASEAN citizens between member states as some trade barriers (supposedly) will be loosened and relaxed.

well if the 'poor little kiddies' don't like it they can always nag their irresponsible parents to take them back where they came from, Thailand does not want or need them and nobody else does either.
I think the the familiar acronym TiT may have a new home, although it may be used as a proper noun in this instance.

Anyone of any age that comes here illegally is a criminal and NOT a migrant. They should be sent back to the country from whence they came. Of course 30 days in a detention centre, as described, should encourage them to return ASAP!
So a five year old migrant is a criminal.
What control does any five year old have over their lives at that age?
I'm sure you at five were fully independent, had a part time job and had no reliance on your own parents, You probably didn't do what they told you as you no doubt knew better. Had they tried to take you over a border crossing, you would have requested your parents show you your valid visa before acquiescing to their demands, correct? Or would you have just gone along for the holiday?
So explain again how is a five year old migrant criminally liable for his or her own actions please.
Children need to be treated like children in an environment suitable for children. Especially when those in positions of authority have control over their situation. No excuses.
If i kept my children in conditions like this no doubt the puritanical brigade in TVF would demand my immediate hanging and rightly so.
Then you should not tour India as you would certainly be fleeced by street beggars carrying kidnapped children, and encouraging more such kidnapping.
Wow - a response that had absolutely nothing to do with the actions of the Thai Immigration department and their treatment of children nor my response to it. But written with such moral indignation and fury you can feel the anger seething through the keyboard.
The crux of which argues that as Indian beggars kidnap children this justifies the treatment of migrant children in detention in IDC's in Thailand.
You clearly work at a level far above my pay grade!

First rule in solving a problem is to identify the root cause.
When a faucet is left turned on and water is flooding the basement, you would first turn off the faucet.
Seems quite a number of posters here are young, or ignorant about history.
Read up on the Boat People of the late 1970s, after the Vietnam War. Why are there none now? What closed that faucet?
Are you a plumber, by any chance?
If he is hopefully he can close his own faucet

Sorry I forgot to add that the bank will want to see original copies of all pay slips dating back for the last six months. Without knowing what the figure is on your payslips (70K or 35K) you may find this problematic or not?

Speak to UOB - Go direct to the main branch by PromPong BTS, as your best bet. You will be encouraged to take out insurance - about 600,000 Baht on top of 4mil mortgage. If you don,t take it they probably wont give you a mortgage as you are their money source. If you die, the insurance pays off the mortgage for UOB., Mortgage which will be in the wife,s name. Expect monthly payments on a 20 year 4.5 million mort to be in the region of 30k per month.
Also remember that the bank will send its own assessor to the house to assess value. The asking price and the assessors value often vary and the bank will use the assessors quote as the basis for any mortgage offer. i.e a mortgage based on 90% of the assessors valuation which maybe for example 500,000 below the asking price.
Wife an I have a mort with UOB - Similar situation as you.

Sorry to be a stick in the mud
But apart from teenagers on a year out (not the quality tourist TAT wants I suspect) , those who have retired, or the rich. How many people can actually afford in terms of time and money to take a 2 month holiday? As far as I know most people who work have about 25 days annual holiday and i'd imagine that these folk (working people) are the mainstay of Thailand's tourist industry in terms of revenue. A 30 day or 60 day visa will make little difference if they are on a two week break?
Whilst it is a nice gesture from TAT, they seem to be targeting a very small group with this extension I doubt very sadly, that it will lead to the generation of significant revenue.

Thailand mulls ID wristbands, curfews for tourists
in Thailand News Headlines
Posted
The only thing missing from this idea to take it into the realms of utter insanity would be to the fine levied on tourists should they refuse to wear the ID Tag.
Persecute the victim to make them feel more secure - clearly they have no concept of the culture which they try to woo into spending their holidays here.
