  1. I agree with Misterman Dive Asia are along with See Bee's one of the better dive operators, looking at the pictures it looks preety typical of the type of dive boat you would have built and use in Phuket, does anyone know if they were on a liveaboard trip or day boat, just hard to figure out the dive site location 9 miles off Patong.

  2. hi guy's

Just thought i would post this in the event any of you are planning a trip to the UK to pick up any goodies to bring back to the LOS, Manchester airport (i am sure others will do the same) now have a policy to weigh all bags, including carry on hand bags before you check in.

Be warned they are charging £38 per kg, which you have to pay before you are able to check in, a couple in front of me showed 20kg over, no surprise the lady (a thai girl) just ditched half of her belongings right in the middle of departures rather than paying the excess charge.

    what a lovely country.

  3. Hi Guy's

Just thought i would share my misery, i am back in the UK for a week, number one on my list was to go and watch the boys in the local derby against Huddersfield, in a word shit, first half good football and we even started to move the ball around like a proper football team, second half, it was watching last seasons games, no vision and no defence.

We lost to them again, gifting a goal in the last minute, they celebrated like they had just got promotion......<deleted> !!!

    Come on the mighty Leeed's

    on on

  4. Good to see you have the good sense to get away from Phuket Colonel Mustard, i saw some of your previous posts when i was in Phuket.

You can find some large very trees at a small garden centre on your left on the super highway coming into town from CM, they have some large white rocks for sale by the roadside and the prices of the trees are very reasonable.

We are also using a landscaper to build / redesign our garden PM me if you want details

  5. Chaichara

Thanks very much for your info, we have been priced b850K for a skimmer and b950K for an overflow all inc, we have had a few other prices but all around 1.3 million, we dont have many contractors around CR.

I will haggle with the contractor and buy the pumps etc direct and see what difference it makes.

    Cheers

  6. Hey guy's

I have just had a quote from a contractor in Chiang Rai for an 9x4 pool, he has quoted using an ASTRAL pool pump and sand filter, are they any good, i understand they are from Spain ?

He has also given me a separate price for a salt water chlorinator of 50K, i would be interested in more info an the Australian model you mentioned Chaichara.

    Cheers

  7. Hope you are right Percy 2, we don't have a glorious history in the play off stakes, i think macca's knows what he is doing and we have a well rounded team so long as Richardson pulls his weight, he had some dreadful games last season and with young Johnny Howson, who can only get better, its looking good (odds are 5/1 we win the league).

Pity about Dougie freedman he was a class act and will be missed

    On and On

  8. niggi,

Thanks for your info, we are in Chiang Rai, however i am considering not bothering a neigbour has a pool and spends most of his time fishing snakes, frogs and bugs out each day before he can use it, and advises spending my money on an indoor pool or just dont bother as the costs outway the benifit.

Back to the drawing board i think

    cheers

  9. Hi all,

Can any of you offer any information on the relative costs of buying clubs in the LOS, i am emigrating to Chiang Rai at the end of May and just considering if it would be cheaper to replace my old clubs in the UK or when i arrive.

    Cheers

  10. Hi all,

Does anyone have any history of transporting a dog from the UK to Chiang Rai, i have spoken to Thai cargo at Heathrow, he quoted me £12.25 per kg and they said they could get the dog to Chiang Mai and we would have to organise our own transport to CR, i am not sure if the guy was clued up or not but has anyone flown a dog into CR airport ?

I have spoken to several specialist dog shipping agents and they are saying they can only get the dog to Bangkok and i would have to organise my own internal flight with the dog with a local shipping agent.

    Cheers

  11. Had the same thing happen to me in Chiang at the Siam Commercial Bank, asked for 5k and gave me back my card and no cash, i called one of the staff to complain she asked me to do the same transaction and this time it gave me the money. She more or less called me a lair so i went inside to complain to the manager who was just as smug.

He said if i had not got the cash it would not be debited from my account, so i quickly phoned my Visa helpline (free call thank god) they told me i had just made two withdrawals and both had gone from my account, i asked the manager if he could do a balance check on the machine at the end of the day as obviously it would not balance, he said he could not as this was done on Bangkok (what a load of <deleted>).

Long and short i made a note of his name time etc etc and he said i would have to get my visa company to write to the bank in order for them to investigate, in other words kiss your money bye bye (four weeks gone and no word).

Don't know what it is about the Siam Banks every time i go to one of the branches i have trouble, best stick to the Bangkok Bank I think

  12. Hi all,

Does anyone have any info or costs on transporting a car (Honda jazz) from Phuket to Chaing Rai, i know i could drive it easily on two days but the wife won't let off the lease in case i plan an overnight in BKK (these thai women can be so untrusting).....!!!

    Cheers

  13. Hi Guys,

Looks like the gloves are coming off!!

I have read through this thread with great interest and obviously many of you have have different views on the method construction, chemicals vs salt etc, but does anyone know of a good pool contractor in the Chiang Rai area i am looking to build a pool and have no idea of where to start.

    cheers

  14. Thanks guys for your input it looks like i will have to bite the bullet in order to proceed, however the payments are to at intervals, so fingers crossed what i may loose on the initial down payment may improve if the exchange rate turns back in my favour but i wont hold my breath on that one !!!

But hey, you can't take it with you and no point being the richest man in the graveyard as my old dad used to say. :o

  15. I am looking to transfer sizeable amounts of money to Thailand for a house purchase initially a deposit but can anyone advise the best way to get the best rate on tranferring Uk pounds to Thailand, would i be best to just go to my high street bank and do an electronic transfer to Thailand in pounds, or use one of the many FX companies around.

The Baht is very low against the pound at the moment and i need the best rate i can get.

    Thanks for your help

  16. Gents,

I have been reading through all your comments with interest if you pardon the pun, i am currently making plans to leave good old blighty and retire to Phuket, it appears you all have different views on the best way to invest or transfer money to Thailand. My plan at the moment is to invest all my capital offshore to avoid tax and hopefully live off the interest making one or two transactions per year to avoid the hit on bank charges. i will be making a visit to the Nationwide to check out the points already raised to see if the free transfers apply.

Can anyone point me in the right direction as what to do with my pot of gold, weather to stuff it all into the Nationwide as some have done so, or stick with the offshore plan and maybe open an account with the farmers bank as a ATM point to get hold of my yearly spend budget.

Any help would be most useful.........

Charges are made for SWIFT Transfer (I believe about £20 per transaction) however the Nationwide Debit Card (Flex Account) does not charge a fee for use abroad for payments with or withdrawals from ATMs, no charge either for using the Nationwide Credit Card (other than of course for a cash withdrawal) Hope this helps

Thanks for the information, but if i keep all my cash in a UK bank after i leave the UK for Phuket will i get taxed on the balance in the account ??
