  1. I just moved from a house that had an electric pump and holding tank to one without, just fed directly from the city water pressure. While being caught without water is a drag I don't for a minute miss the sound of that damn pump. You so much as look at the tap and the thing will kick on. The noise is something to consider if investing in one of these.

  2. This is a good question. I know when these items are shipped overseas they are fumigated which I assume kills these insects. Now what that fumigation entails I suppose google could help. The bamboo makers have big shacks where they smoke treat the bamboo which I believe is to kill the insects. You might locate one and ask them to re-smoke your furniture. Kind of a pain in the butt and it will smell like smoke for a bit afterward and might change the color but....it could be an option.

Maybe sticking the furniture in a closed bathroom and fogging it with some commercial bug spray. These insects do need to breathe, right?

  3. My water was off for about 15 minutes two nights ago (I live in Chang Phuak/Kham Tiang area). Not a big deal, really, except I was in the shower and covered in soap. Just had enough of a trickle to clear my eyes before the trickle ran dry. Funny stuff haha 55555555555555555555555555678

  4. I have been here for years but have lost all perspective on what is high and low season. There doesn't seem to be the clearly defined periods that there were years ago. I remember CM seemed a ghost town around the moat in the low season years ago (not talking August but May/June). I don't get that feeling anymore at all.

  5. We knew the place did not have a lot of foot traffic and that it would take some time to get the word out. The cart is not before the horse, I don't believe. Just the cart may have square wheels. But it's an inexpensive place to get the feet wet and I like the vibe. I don't have the money for a pricer local. If it really proves an endeavor in futility we can bail without too much loss. Mostly time.

There are shops/cafes all over CM in the most unlikely places. And I see people in them! I don't get how it works but somehow, for some folks, it DOES work.

Eyecatcher, has high season hit you or are we at mid?

    cheers........

  6. That's a def for google maps. Espresso machine's not a bad idea but they're quite expensive. What I'm seeing is a far number of tourists walking around the sois...but not my soi. So even if I had drinks or even dancing girls, if they're not meandering by they're not meandering in. So it doesn't seem I will get so many walk-ins as things stand right now.

  7. Yikes! A lot of good advice on here and a great ROI for me! Let me process it all and get back to you all soon. I've got to get to the shop and open that sucker. Later, I'll have PLENTY of time to respond while I'm whiling away the hours. My thumbs do get so tired from a twiddlin'...

  8. Hello fellow CMers,

I've just opened a small shop selling leather goods and various accoutrements in the old city near Chang Phuak gate. It is down a small soi just off Sriphum Rd and I would like to do some advertising to let visitors to CM know I exist and would appreciate any advise on where and how to do it. I have Citylife on my list and am trying to remember the name of that small envelope-size monthly that one sees around town with enticing ads from various local vendors. I believe it's called Lanna something-or-other. Above that, there is the back of Tuk tuks or songtaews (approach the individual drivers?). I suppose I could ask (i.e. pay?) individual guesthouses/hotels to display an ad/flyer for me. Anybody know a skywriting service to fly over Huay Tung Taew?

As for advertising on TV, I'm certainly not against it but am thinking that it is more viable for long-stayers than for tourists. Is my thinking correct?

    All advise appreciated.

    Che-che-che-cheers!

  9. Fantastic! Now it's becoming tough to narrow down the field. I was secretly hoping someone would come forth and say the clinic situated on Thanon Chotana almost across from Tanin market is great as I can almost hit it with a stone from my house. It would sure be convenient. Do any of you know anything about it? I think it's called Chang Phuak Animal Hospital or something of the like.

  10. Thanks, guys. It sounds like Ban Mha is the place...I do quite like the name "Metta Animal", as well. I was hoping to find a place on the north side of the city since that's where I'm located but Mahidol is really not too far and going there will not be an everyday occurrence so I don't suppose the trip will do me any harm. The cats I'm sure will appreciate some good care, too.

    Thanks again, cheers, Bamboozled

  11. Good morning all,

I have a wooden item that needs to be shipped to Singapore. Unpacked, it is 40kg and 125cm tall so packed (crated perhaps) it will be somewhat larger and heavier. Sending this by truck would probably be the simplest method in my estimation. Does anyone have some contacts that could provide this service? The post office would be the easiest but I'm pretty sure they won't take an item that large. One person can't really lift it too easily if at all.

    Tanks!

  12. Sandy, what do you mean your tabian baan? You have one? How is that? I don't have one and as Ubon Joe said we can't get one. I'm from the US to answer some other poster's questions and I would love to get the O visa somewhere in the region to save me spending 2 grand to go back to the US. So I'm hoping to take a copy of my future wife's tabian baan, a copy of her ID (both of these things signed and dated), the marriage certificate, and my passport...fill out an application, toss some money in the mix, set the oven to 350, and in 24 hours have a marriage visa. Am I deluded (in reference to this issue only, not all the other life issues about which I've surely got my head in the clouds)?

...quick interjection of a question here: for the marriage visa. Does one need the original tabian baan or a copy is sufficient?

    1000 Cheers! ...Mr. Bamboozled

When I went for the one year extension they never asked to look at my wifes Tabian Baan, her ID or the marriage certificate, just accepted the copies.

They only asked to look at my Tabian Baan.

  13. Sorry Ubonjoe, this would be for a first time marriage visa and I'm referring to the tabian baan of my lady-friend (who would at that point be my wife). I am not registered in any tabian baan and don't think I need to be to get the visa, correct? I am probably misunderstanding something about your reply. My girl has a copy of the tabian baan but the original is with her parents. From reading the posts, I recall that it is not necessary for her to be living in the house from where the tabian baan originates.

Re-reading your post, if one needs the original for an extension of 1-year, it makes sense that the original would be needed for a first time visa. But, if someone is in London, for example, they would have carried this original tabian baan all the way to London? That seems unlikely, too. My apologies if these specifics have been addressed (as they surely have) in other posts but sifting through it all is next to impossible.

    Cheers 1001!

  14. Here is a post from yesterday about someone getting a Non-O in London. It seems very simple and he did not show any income proof. Is this a fluke?

"I have just received my passport back from the Thai Embassy in London, complete with multiple entry Non-immigrant O visa based on marriage to a Thai. Just to confrim I did not need to show proof of any income to get this, just a copy of my Thai wedding certificate and copies of wifes Thai ID card and passport all of which were signed by her. The application took just 48 hours to process, cost £135 which included special delivery return, but can only be paid for by cash or postal order.

It appears that the information on the Embassy Website is misleading, i checked before submitting the application, both with the Embassy and a couple of the consulates and was told you only needed to show proof of income if applying for a non-immigrant o visa if you intend to get married in Thailand and apply for a marriage visa.

Hope this clears up a lot of the confusion regarding non immigrant visas based on marriage to a Thai."
