who or what is a "gik"?
Exactly!
-
In case you're not taking the piss, it's a person with whom you have a casual sexual relationship.
It does not necessarily imply that you have a more primary partner, as with mia noi, and it doesn't imply financial support, at least not any more than other styles of sexual relationahip do in Thailand.
BS, a single man cannot have a Gik, argue that one all day long if you like.
right this second my thai friends are laughing at your post.
And my Thai friends are laughing at yours. Thais use the term gik all the time referring to people they know are single (including myself)

Just like the English nurse didn't kill herself over transferring a phone call, this guy is unlikely to have killed himself solely over gf issues.
People generally kill themselves because they have massive depression. It's a mental health issue and affects some much more than others.
It boggles my mind people passing judgement on these poor souls who feel they are left with no choice. You have no clue what has happened in his life, you have no clue of the chemical make up of his brain and his predisposition to depression. Basically, you have no fookin clue

I have lived here 12 years and haven't really had problems until about two or three months ago. Now it seems that maybe 50% of the taxis i stop don't want to take me or don't want to use the meter.
Same. been here a few years and while it's always been an issue to get taxis around 'spicy' hours or heavy traffic routes, only in the last few months have i noticed them regularly declining short 40 baht fares with no traffic. It's pretty weird.
-
Taxi's have become a joke. I'm constantly refused from esplanade to home which is a 40 baht fare of like 1km.
As for getting home to ratchada after a few drinks in suk forget about it. Just get the constant inevitable cries of you go Spicy or 200 baht.
Will be reporting them all

Yes works fine on older versions of maps. They have disabled thailand and some other countries in the latest maps version for whatever dumb reason..

Yes, for some reason when they bought out the new highly touted 'offline' feature Thailand was no longer available offline. Is a tremendous fail.

I have a pretty new set around 4 months old only used a few times. I saw them selling in thantikit for a bit over 20K last week. 4K, but no bag or putter.
They have graphite shafts and big head so easy to hit. I'm in BKK

Depends how much you use your phone I guess. If you are a moderate-heavy user of the screen you aren't getting a day out of any of the big screen phones (except for perhaps the razor maxx), hence why I like a replaceable battery. Battery is more convenient to carry and use than an external charger (carry mine in my wallet.)

My problem with Sense or any other skin is it unnecessarily delays updates. Jelly is already on my nexus (and running smooth as butter) while phones with skins are still fumbling around trying to get ics on them. Skins were useful when android was in its infancy, but nowadays they are a waste of space imo.
-
I almost got the one x but a fairly weak non replaceable bat was a deal breaker for me. So out of those 2 I'd go SGS3.
I'd consider a galaxy nexus import from mbk if you wanna save 10K. Advantage is you get the new jellybean OS which makes it much smoother than any ics device. No regrets at all getting mine - I will only go for nexus devices now.
-
Take a look at the cheaper Nokias with WP 7.5. They run smoother than 20K+ android phones and have sexy UI imo. (Disadvantage: not upgradeable to WP8)
Otherwise like wana says nexus and sgs2 good phones at those prices. (Disadvantage: no warranty)
Advantage with nexus is you'll get jellybean in a couple weeks. Have it on my nexus now and it's a lot smoother with some nice features.

Not sure if there has been some major improvements to open street maps but last I checked maps weren't nearly as detailed and had hardly any point of interests.
I have data in thailand too so it's not that big of a deal here. Of course offline is still far superior as there is no need to burn through data (keep data plans smaller) and data is not always reliable.
Mainly it's for trips away. I have no interest in trying to cache little squares every time I move somewhere. It's a comical system.
Guess you haven't updated maps loma? Because you can no longer cache anything here. And nor can you in a whole raft of places looking online.
Just surprising the implementation is so incredibly poor. How hard is it to just have a list of countries/cities and choose the ones you want to install. Apparently not that hard if even Nokia can manage it...
-
They just released a maps update with 'offline maps' and it can only be described as an epic fail.
It is still that absurd system of selecting a square on the map. The max size is set to 80mb or something stupidly small. And the real cherry on top - I select an area in Bangkok and it says offline maps is not available in this area. So they have actually effectively REMOVED the offline maps capability here.
Well done chaps, well done.
Also had a good play with a cheap Nokia WP phone (complete with proper offline maps.) It was miles smoother and nicer UI than my nexus with a fraction of the hardware. Google is really gonna have to up their game to stop me insta jumping ship when the WP8 phones come out end of year. About to dload jellybean and have a play (supposedly makes for a smoother experience.)

I feel like whatsapp has hit critical mass. Almost everyone I know uses it. Hopefully they will incorporate calling functionality going forward.

If it sounds too good to be true it usually is You won't be getting any more (significant) juice out of battery of the same physical size. Generally you'll get less with cheap batts
-
This is great news assuming it works like Nokia where you can just dload countries onto device. For example I frequently travel to Aus/NZ and around Thailand so just install those countries and forget about it. Yes you can currently cache some tiles but that's a giant PITA if you are moving around different places.

Why does GB outperform ICS ?
Not sure if it does or not but wouldn't be a surprise. Generally as software moves forward it requires more powerful hardware to run at same speed. Ms dos is blazing fast on my comp here

I believe Android 4.0.x has Thai language UI, Settings, Language & input, Language.
It only lists the languages from the region your phone comes from though. Mine is imported from Euro so has English and a few different Euro languages. I don't think there is any way to add languages to this list without flashing a new rom. Not that I know of anyway.
edit: Actually running new rom which only has those languages. Pretty sure I checked when I got phone and couldn't see thai listed though.

The old batch had australian warranties, the one I got had German/euro warranty. From reading online though warranty claims need to be done through place of purchase and you SOL with imports unless shop offers specific warranty. So safe to assume you are buying without warranty.
right. do they have thai language pre-installed, or does the shop give you language pack?
I'm not sure there is any easy way to install a language pack in android other than flashing a new rom that supports it?
Didn't come with thai language no. If you just want to be able to type thai you can just install a thai keyboard. Can switch easy enough just hold down the spacebar
I thought the integration into the spacebar where you can select multiple language keyboards came native with samsung stock software and depended on the stock languages in system language settings. That's cool if you can add your own keyboard and allow switching to it via spacebar swipe.
But I was referring to ability to switch system language (localize the interface) so thai gf can understand the menus.
ya I don't think this is possible without flashing a new rom with thai built in (and I'm not sure if they exist)

I certainly didn't get the impression of any 2nds quality yip. My wifi signal good as gold. Haven't bothered to look at any benchmark comparisons but bear in mind the Gnex is pushing a lot more pixels than the sgs2 which will affect things. Photos hit or miss in my experience - some nice, some pretty poor.
Mine is an import from germany not korea. I'm sure mbk has imports from all over the place. Another batch I saw was from Aus.

Actually found the dudes card who offered me 15k thai new. His shop is called '@ by Jackie' and his number 0869981499. The girls shop is kinda behind his and quite close. It is down near the end of the mall but can't remember which end. Good luck

No less than 10 taxis refused the Thai girl I was with a ride from suk to ladprao last Sunday late morning (not much traffic) My visiting mate thought he had entered the twilight zone. Taxis here are a complete and utter joke I'm afraid.
