  1. Given their ditching of Symbian, and low-cost manufacturers addressing of this market Nokia has probably, and correctly, given up on this segment. As seen they've been unprofitable recently addressing that market so they have no choice but to move up.

Loma, you follow these things more closely than me. But I'm not sure your comment above is a correct one.

As best as I recall, Nokia just recently announced plans for a new OS with some new name to replace the S40 series OS on feature phones, and serve as their future feature phone OS platform. So are they really "given up" on that segment?

Likewise, last I heard, there continues to be talk about Microsoft and Nokia planning some kind of lower-end Windows phone models with lesser specs and prices that would target the "developing" markets at acceptable price points.

So from what I've been reading, it seems that they're continuing to address those lower end markets going forward -- apart from the higher end, higher priced U.S. smartphone market.

Yes, this is correct. They certainly aren't giving up on the segment. They are ditching symbian but that wasn't their low end anyway - s40 was. It appears they are going to a new linux based os called meltemi for feature phones to replace s40.

And they have 'tango' and 'apollo' coming mid 2012 for WP. Tango being the low end stuff for devloping countries, apollo perhaps being W8 with whatever nokia contributes

  2. I had a play with the 800 today was quite impressed. They are late to the game but I think they have the foundation for a great OS in 7.5. It really struck me as fresh the same way as iphone first did. Whether they can get devs interested in them to start producing some decent apps is another matter.

Are you in Thailand wellred? Wouldn't mind picking up the 800 myself

  3. I'm not surprised WP numbers are poor with manufacturers showing little interest so far. Can barely even find a WP phone in Thailand. Will become more interesting in the following years with Nokia's reach. A lot of my friends are only just becoming aware of WP in the UK thanks to Nokia's aggressive marketing of the lumia (and they are liking what they see.) It's not surprising pre-orders aren't matching iphones - takes a while to get the ball rolling, and it's really only just started with Nokia.

Not sure about others but I use my phone for nav all the time. Been a life saver up here in Chiang Mai on my scooter. Offline maps also crucial for me for travel. It's not only nav and camera with nokia anyway - lumia is way more elegant than anything i've seen from the rest except for apple. And of course will be interested to see how Nokia differentiates the software going forward.

  4. You ever used WP7.5 nikster?

Way slicker and a much better user experience than android imo. Nokia lumia 800 is sex in a phone imo and it's only the beginning. Right now I'd say WP7.5 is a far better experience for the non-geek phone owners than android - a lot just don't know it yet (nearly all the reviews I read say this as well.) This is changing with the nokia lumia push tho - a lot of friends in UK are suddenly becoming interested in it, and user satisfaction is very high with WP devices once tried.

Nokia/WP ain't going anywhere. Wait until your comp, tablet and phone are all running WP8. Gonna be a no-brainer for a lot of people.

I agree general sentiment for ms might not be amazing. Mine hasn't exactly been great in the past. I do think windows 7 is a very good os tho and I think WP7.5 is fantastic.

  5. yeah seems people have a love/hate relationship with wp7

Personally, I'm on the love side of the coin - I think it's the most stylish OS out there.

To me, Android on N9 hardware would be like a luxury condo with index furniture in it.

Each to their own I guess

  6. http://www.pcworld.c...elite.html Guess it depends who you talk to.

Main issue I have with iphone is it blows saturation and contrast levels off the charts. Looks good for some photos but poor for others.. It's also why you have to be careful about camera 'reviews' because a lot of people think super bright colourful photos are better quality photos, when it's actually just automatically ratcheting up saturation which no serious photographer wants. And btw, neither are close to my one year old n8 in the camera department (for stills anyway)

Siri looks interesting, but multiple reports of it being effectively useless outside of the states.

Saying android is 1 or 2 years behind is just pure fanboy talking. If you offered me a 4s or SGS2 for free I choose the SGS2. Throw in the fact it is significantly cheaper and it's a no-brainer for me. But really I will wait until the sgs3 comes out (prob not long at all after the 4s is released here.)

  7. It must be true then, if the Thai police are claiming it in a case that they've lost massive face over. Was that the same Lt.Col that claimed Aldhouse would never get off Phuket, and then that they'll have him extradited and back on Phuket within a week?

Those lovely police down there sure do need to save face on this one. And the authorities on Phuket are as honest as the day is long.

    yawn...

yes, we all understand your position by now heho. What's the point in even continuing the discussion when anything you don't want to hear is just going to be explained away by the police being corrupt.

  8. She said"At first it didn't look like he [Aldhouse] had anything. We didn't know he had a knife because his hands were in his pockets"

That is simply astounding English ability for a (presumably uneducated) menial Thai worker. One really has to compliment her on being on par with a native English speaker.

Just like the native English speaking editors at that newspaper.

lool, really clutching at straws now heho. Embarrassing

  9. I haven't read his every post but it in his most recent he went for "And I repeat, there are NO witnesses to the actual event, the one witness has given contradictory evidence and as such her testimony will be ripped to shreds."

Perhaps he just missed the word credible

What doesn't appear to be credible is your claim she is not credible.

Why is she not credible? Again, I ask for just one QUOTE from HER where she changed her story. Or show one report of anyone saying she has changed her story. There are numerous incorrect and/or contradictory things in numerous news accounts of this incident but only one quote, that I am aware of, from the girl and it says she was there when the murder took place.

Also, all reports appear to indicate the victim was giving the girl a ride home and that he was stabbed twice when he got of his bike and then ran inside. This jives completely with the girls story of seeing the suspect approach with his hands in his pockets, then producing a knife and stabbing the victim twice before they ran inside.

So, please explain why this girl is not credible ... beyond as usual reports (especially English Thai newspapers) put out contradictory information.

lol wot, easy there tiger. Where did I claim she wasn't credible? Was just stating he probably wanted to say no credible witness rather than say NO witness then talk about the witness.

I have no reason to doubt the credibility of the witness, but I have no idea if she is credible or not.

  10. Nisa, I have previously listed the source for the conflicting reports of the GF.

The source cannot be linked to or quoted on Thaivisa due to legal issues, see the forum rules.

The name of the newspaper is Phuket Wan, and the report was that she was asleep, was woken by the noise, went to the livingroom to see the vidtim on the ground and 'a man' leaving through the broken glass/door.

Now where are your answers to my yes or no questions, or do you have to ignore this too?

So which is more likely, the witness keeps changing her story or the notoriously useless thai press misreports it?

I would suggest the latter but I'm sure either is quite possible.

One things for sure, our local 'random' policeman can use as many caps as he likes when he says there are NO witnesses, doesn't change the fact he actually has no idea.

To be fair, he first said there was no witnesses, then said there was no credible witnesses and then said the witness "recanted" ... none of which he has been able to back up but that hasn't stopped him from going down this road as far as he can. But we should forgive him because we know how police love to act like defense attorneys and do everything in their power to discount facts when it comes to taking in evidence against a suspect.

  12. [

i guess when you start giving simple answers to simple questions we may be tempted to join in, feel free to answer the questions you have been asked many times, based on YOUR knowledge of an actual event.

the question you are asking me has an answer based on fact that can be found from a simple internet search and as such you do not need my opinion on it.

oh, by the way, i am still waiting for your pm, i guess we can put that to bed now then can we??

PM for what? I can't recall ever writing or even thinking about a PM.

BTW my simple yes or no questions were directed to hehe as first he accused me of not knowing anything about this news story, then when I proved him wrong by saying I was at the bar where the fight started, he turns into an arse and asks " so you were at the murder scene"? What a dumb arse question. Nice sidestep of the yes and no answer in regards to extradition as we all know countries do not extradite based on a whim from a SE Asian country :).

    >>feel free to answer the questions you have been asked many times,

What question has been asked of me many times?

He called you Nisa before so I don't think attention to detail is his strong point :)

  13. I am not the type of person that wants to lie to make themselves sound glamorous, it is my old career, whether you believe facts or not is up to you, however i am happy to offer proof if you so desire, i know facts are not your strong point when engaging in your 'mind closed, my opinion is the only opinion bull in a china shop' routine, but at some point in your life you will need to understand that some people have more experience than you in certain matters.

lol, I hope you were joking when you said 'sound glamorous'

hell, I believe you, I'd be more inclined to lie and say I wasn't a policeman, it isn't a career renowned for attracting the sharpest tools in the shed.

I will again reiterate and point out that this is real life and not some American film, there are NO credible witnesses to the actual crime, there is one witness that has now recanted her statement, there is circumstantial evidence, and as yet we are not aware of any forensic evidence, however in a UK or European court the standard of forensic gathering in thailand, as well as evidential gathering from witnesses will just not cut the mustard.

Who cares? If he is extradited he is found guilty, if he is not it will be because of human rights issues

  14. Again heho, I'm unsure of your point? You think he is innocent or there isn't enough reported evidence to convict him? (kinda irrelevant when only a fraction of the evidence has been reported)

In Aldhouse's best case there is no forensic evidence (including no knife linked to him close to the scene), and the girlfriend (or anyone else about) says she saw nothing at all. And then they would have to decide all the other circumstantial evidence is not enough to convict him on it's merits alone (looks more than enough for any jury or Thai judge to me - can't see a thai judge finding him innocent after he was extradited)

Stranger things have happened but it is all rather unlikely

Everyone here knows he did it, it's patently obvious. Well, except for 'random' above I guess who thinks the girlfriend was the culprit lool

  15. Amuses me this war going on through the thread of brits vs yanks.

Must say as a neutral kiwi observer the brits generally come across as right c#nts here though.

"get over it, its a daily occurrence, the problem with this thread is it is full of americans because one is dead, none of you knew him, don't get so ate up about it, the chances are he wouldnt have given you the steam of his shit when he was alive, but you are all mourning him,"

Stuff like that pretty much sums it up. Yeah lad, you'll have to forgive me for feeling for a young man that was stabbed to death ...

  16. I am simply being realistic.

No witness to the actual crime, besides the conflicting reports of the GF.

    No video of the crime.

No forensic evidence (as yet shown) linking the accused to the crime scene.

Possible video of him stealing a knife (or is it knives, Nisa?) from a 7-11, of which neither were the bloodied knife at the murder scene (as reported).

This is all correct, no?

    1) You have know idea if the GFs story changed. Much more likely the reports of her story are conflicting.

    2) No video of the knife going in no. So what, not often that there is unfortunately

    3) Forensic evidence not released yet. Would be amazed if there wasn't any.

Regardless, the odds of him being found not guilty by either a Thai judge or a UK jury (if it could be tried there) are so remote they are not even worth considering
