  1. what i find most hysterical about this; there are innumerable thai clubs/karaokes that literally stay open until dawn every night,

operating with complete impunity, soi chaiyapoon, many places of 3rd rd. but they're cracking-down on the "tourist clubs" why?

Economies of scales... How much do you think those all night Thai places make in a given night? Along with that, most of the girls at Insomnia will have fist full's of cash in order to walk free without so much as being tested.

  2. I've come to the conclusion that the "wai" is really a non-issue concerning foreigners.

Foreigners that Thai's have no respect for yeah... :)

Saying that tho, some Thai's don't like foreigners in general and will not wai unless it's absolutely required. Others have no beef with foreigners and probably don't really expect a wai in return unless they realise you've been over here for quite some time, but will wai you out of protocol.

  3. As a foreigner, should one expect to receive a "wai" from Thai friends and family when being introduced the first time? (In this scenario the foreigner is clearly older than the people he is introduced to).

Also, if a wai is not shown, what conclusions can be drawn from this if any?

Absolutely.. If they don't they have no respect for you. :)

  4. I would have said celling fan's consume much less as they don't have to deal with so much gravitational force compared with the upright one's and in theory could be fitted with a less powerfull motor? :D If you notice, when u switch on a celling fan it takes a good 5 seconds to get upto speed. Floor standing ones are flat out within 2. A more powerfull motor perhaps? :)

  5. It's the drugs they always seem to scew you with, most aren't even required. Then your charged 3x what you'd pay at a pharmacy for them...

Last time I was there I had some chest pains and it turned out I'd pulled some muscles between my rib's when excercising, went to the hospital to be on the safe side though...

2x consultations with the doctor & a chest X-ray came to less than 1000 baht.. And the drug's (some crap for severe arthritis) which probably weren't even required 1'400 baht :)

This was at the place on Soi Convent, Sathorn/Silom road....

  6. I thought I would go back to my pet love (Udon Thani) and was shocked to find the town I fell in love with 2 years ago had gone from about 20 bars to 240 bars and become the mini pattaya of Isaan, filled with sex tourists. Good thing I have real friends there to keep me away from all 240 of those bars.

    Don't talk sh1t..

Excuse me? Talk what? I presented numbers, real numbers from a friend that actually owns a prominent bar in Udon and has been in the business for some time. If you have a problem with the numbers or the facts I have presented, present your own. Trying to shoot someone down with abuse is deconstructive to the conversation and degenerative.

If you havent been there and think Im lying, take a look for yourself. Ask a local where you can find day/night (theres about 50 bars there, open literally from about 10am until 2-3am when the Police turn up to close them), or Nutty park, where you will find almost as many. Forgive me for stating the truth from personal experience.

The figures you gave amount to less than 100 so your 140 short....

Day/night has no more than 25 bars, more likely less than 20... Nutty Park, if its where I think u mean has even less.. So, lets call that 50 in total.

Thank you for confirming what I said.. I suggest you go and get your eye's checked.. You have @ least double vision, more likely triple vision.. Wheres the other 190 bars? :)

  7. I don't think that Thai tourists are staying in boutique hotels in Europe for 800 or 1,900 baht per night.

No, but they don't get charged double because of the colour of their skin in Europe :) . Foreman's experience is another reason why the Thai tourist industry is biting the hand that feeds. It really is quite nonsensical.

Thai tourists are generally charged at least 5 times more in Europe than farang in Thailand. Let's not even get started on the double standards in wages.

What are you going on about!!!

I know a lot more Thais in Thailand with money, than I know Farangs with money.

Dont kid yourself that all Thais are poor. The rich here are very, very rich :D

And double standard charging, as you put it, based on whether or not you are Thai, is simply wrong and offputting.

A Thai could roll upto the hotel in a brand new 5 million baht BMW and be given the room with the Thai rate... Then along come a couple of backpackers or english teachers who haven't had a proper shower for weeks and can only afford 30 baht meal's, and they get told double the price of the BMW driving local.... :D Perfectly fair..... :D

  9. I don't agree what that at all. I use a 50" Pioneer with UBC and it is crystal clear. Just use the S-video signal from the UBC box and make sure the signal strangth is good (-/+ 250).

    Robert

How can it be crystal clear with all the macroblocking, never mind the resolution thats 1/2 to 1/4 that of your TV's.

It may be acceptable, but crystal clear is not a phrase I've ever heard about UBC.

It is a very sharp and clear picture. I agree it is not as good as DVD quality, but it is close.

I have a 55" LED TV and it looks fine also. It's UBC so as expected its no where near as good as DVD or downloaded HD movies but it's not blurry as some people have reported. :)

It would also depend on how close your sitting to the TV and how good your eye sight is?..

  10. Try driving past one of the many Thai police road blocks on an uninsured motorbike without a Thai license. Then wait to see what happens !

And I guess you could try the same test in any Western country with same results.

I must have been pulled over 100 times on motorbikes for one reason or another, not once has insurance ever been mentioned, or for that matter, being so drunk I could hardly stand up straight.. :)

  11. Not supprising.. BKK is at boiling point right now..

I had a guy telling me he knew where I lived and was going to kill me for parking my car somewhere perfectly legit but not where he agreed with the other day.. :)

  12. Why does she need a licence? It's only a motorbike which doesn't exactly require insurance...

Because I cannot even think of doing something illegal in Thailand

Whether she has a licence or not, the police will still decide she's doing illegal if their pockets are feeling a little light...
