  1. I think to give 100,000 or 200,000 plus gold is a customarily practice for thai marriage, even thai man do that. But it is not the end of the story especially you are a foreigner, as there is a saying, when you marry a thai, you marry her whole family, so do your homework and check out how many brothers and sisters she has. If she has 5 or 6 brothers and sisters whom are not working, it is time to reconsider the marriage, as they will very soon be on monthly welfare, drawing from your bank account.

100/200k + gold is not customary, anyone below the age of 60 who even considers paying that for some farmers daughter is a complete idiot. :)

My brother in law paid 100,000 baht which he got from his mother. Now they both work for my sister in law. So 100k is not unheard of for poor people.

But it was for keeps or he got it back?

  2. Logically if someone does n't have a"pot to piss in" and neither do their family then they are going to demand money from their boyfriend be it farang, thai, young or old.

So if you dont want to outlay lots of dough you have to find a lady that has a good income and the family are n't poor.

You hit the nail right on its head, that is what im trying to say here.

Not always the case though, I've had chicks (the ones which last for more than a few weeks) where at least one of the parents work's in a normal job (8k-12k) or both parents work. The parents never asked for cash though, not once, and they lived in BKK also in some cases.

The flip side of that is that I've met girls with normal jobs who've come out with something like "If your my boyfriend I cannot have time to work 2 job's for money for family and have time for you also", this within weeks of meeting them. They got told to get fvcked off shortly after, and then started crying the I don't want your money BS... And other case's like, normal office girls whom after eventually nailing them (and I mean very shortly after) with a 1+ month chase seemed to think they deserved a new 5'000 baht watch :D ..

IMO opinion, if you need to post online for advice about this subject, especially a situation which is such blatant money grabbing and gold digging as the OP's your going to get burnt sooner or later..

U might aswell learn your lesson now and then get on with life, allbeit, with your eye's a little more open.. :)

  4. Good story - It seems in this case that they crossed the line and were indeed attempting to stretch a little more out of their prospective Son in Law. Also, it must have put a lot of pressure on your fiancee at the time, so congratulations to her for sticking to your side.

It's my understanding that according to tradition the girls parents (if they can afford it) should pay for the engagement ceremony and that the SIL is responsible for the wedding and sin-sod. Usually the cost of the wedding would be recovered from the guests 'donations'...

I'll be getting married with 12 months and am reading these threads on appropriate behavior and stretching the limits with interest.

In my case we'll be given a healthy chunk of land on Bangkok on which to build our house - so I can't say that I'd be too upset is the sin-sot (which is a fairly significant sum in-itself) is kept. But I have learned that asking money for engagement is stretching tradition a little too far !

So the land and house are going to be in both your names? :)

  5. It appears that, during office hours, the sharing on internationla bandwidth is so terrible that theres not much loxinfo can do about it (despite it being their fault of course).

As soon as offices shut, the speed does jump, I get about 1.5mb down and 300 up to most of europe and us.

True's home packages are much better than CSLox :)

  6. I thought you'd know better than to ask such a simple question? :) Aren't the "holidays" on the 7-8th?

Might I suggest that you check with the individual businesses that concern you? :D

Quite honestly only concerned with my business - whether we are open or not.

Just place a footnote next to this thread and let's see if the status quo remains vis-a-vis which days business actually close. :D

Ahh.. In that case it might be a good idea to ask the owner/manager, you'd assume they'll know what their doing only 1 week before a "holiday". :D

  7. BigITShop are a waste of webspace...

I placed quite a large order with them, got the confimation, etc, etc.. Waited over a week, emailed them.. None of their email addresses work, all were bounced.. Called about 10 times, eventually it got answered, I got put on hold for 10 minutes to be told they never had stock of what I wanted and that I would be refunded..

They took over 1 month to return the cash to my card.. I had to threaten them with credit card charge backs etc..

  8. Out of interest what would most likely happen to the OP if it went to the magistrate?

Likely a 20'000 baht fine for the drink driving + fines for the other rules that were broken. I'd assume u could also be deported for it as it's a criminal offence...

  9. Paid for a door-to-door service for 'household goods' with London Baggage, duty exempt under the rules. Well, no tax to pay but the courier firm on the Thai side hit me with another 4500 Baht in charges and a lot of running around BKK, money transfers to their account, etc. Big courier/logistics firm too. Only 3 tea chest size parcels too.

It was a real pain in the ar$e!

Ya going to name and shame? :)

  10. The other day I posted about a meal that I ordered from Food by Phone. Last night I tried a competitor: Chef XP. Both services provide quick delivery of meals from Bangkok restaurants....actually more than 200 restaurants. Anyway this is from Tony Roma's. It was excellent. Delivery time less than 30 minutes. Really great when you want to stay in but you don't want to cook.

Hi Corkscrew, I order food only about twice or three times a month (lazy days like you I guess). I am not "farang ki nok" by any means but where everything else is the same why pay extra? I call the restaurant directly and they deliver saving me on average B100 on a simple B500 meal (20%). Not to be sniffed at in these hard times. The mosi girls and boys still get their tips and everyone is happy except the "Food by Phone" middlemen. That's why they do not show the restaurant telephone numbers!

B100 = two beers, so cheers!

    Thairet

ChefXP, do not charge extra for their meals, unlike Food By Phone.

And most of the high end restaurants will not deliver themselves.

Corkscrew, I stand corrected. I did not realize ChefXP were not the same as FBP, so how do they make their money?

Personally, I retain high end for friends or family visiting. Family will not eat street food (pretentious wimps) or real Thai grub even in restaurants.

I love to cook all sorts of international stuff, but on the lazy days bring on the bangers and mash or fish and chips.

    Thairet

I guess they get a % discount off the menu price as theres no overheads for the restaurant..

FoodByPhone are a complete rip off in comparison, I stopped using them the second the new chefsxp website was launched...

  11. I just use to think it was the Postman's little perk of his job, helps pay for his lunchtime rice....

I'm thinking the same thing, in which case it's theft... I got 4 other packages from the US/UK this month and nothing was charged.

  12. "International mail processing charge" - or something like that.

    Often 7 baht.

International processing charge? Surely there not delivering USPS packages for free and a portion of the fee paid to USPS makes its way to Thailand at some point?
