  1. What about the chain? Do have to change it if I change from 44 to 38 teeth rear sprocket?

Yes your going to more than likely have to split it and drop a link out. It's not difficult to do just arse ache. You may get away with a split pin link in the chain if you are going the top end direction, although you should really stick to a riveted link on a thou.

If you are going that direction then switch to race sprockets and run a 520 chain, have a look at renthal's they make pucker sprockets.

It keeps you standard chain etc exactly that as a spare. And should you find you don't like your new gearing (which I don't think you will) then you can at least change straight back to standard with no extra cost.

Seriously dude: Don't go 8 teeth.

  2. Another tool is http://www.gearingcommander.com/, it is very likely where Neverdie get its intelligence from, anyway, websites and calculators like this are only a indication... Most often they are not accurate and sometime even downright wrong.

It's not uncommon that people visit websites or believe recommendations on discussion boards and invest money to order the sprockets to find that the performance is not near what they expected...

    Exactly! Good advice.

In 04 I had two Suzuki GSXR1000K3, from memory (which is not great) I think Suzuki stated 160bhp at the crank. Straight as we got the bikes they went on a dyno before getting stripped. Neither made 160bhp and one was 8bhp up on the other. So in theory if I had used the gearing calculator on those two bikes in stock trim I would have had two very different power deliveries from the same model motorcycle.

Stuff like that is for guide only, gives you a starting point. I am amazed people are handing out the info as if it is knowledge or experience.

  3. Hi Richard, that gearing commander is really helping, I am busily working on the proper gearing. Neverdie, I think I need at least 6 down to 38, the smallest size for the rear for FZ1, need to increase the front from 16 to 17 to get the same effect as Sean. Total will be about 8.5 teeth lesser for rear.

Hi Sean, do you feel a big difference in acceleration on 1st gear from standstill compare to stock? I mean pick up speed? Power loss about 20 % for pickup? And you sure still can wheelie on 1st gear?

Yeah I wouldn't do that if I were you.

In principle you guys are on the same page but you are comparing chalk and cheese in the two bikes. On a two stroke you can make radical gearing changes and find top or bottom end power an 8 tooth change on your FZR could make it a pig. What exactly are you trying to achieve? 8 teeth down will give you more top end but it will take forever to get there.

My advice would be to change the front sprocket first, no need to split the chain. If you have enough play in the chain then you wont even need to take the wheel off. What you need to do: Get your fatest mate sat on the bike with front and back brake on (maybe bike in gear, cant remember its been so long!) you will need a torque wrench and socket or a scaffold pole for leverage. Crack the nut on the front sprocket first with fat mate in place. Once the nut is cracked get her up on a paddock stand and loosen off the chain adjusters and rear spindle, here you will find if you have enough play to remove chain from front sprocket, if not drop the back wheel out it's a 10 minute job. Change sprocket reverse process to tighten.

Go one up on the front (=2.5 down on the back) this will give you a very noticeable difference in power delivery and top end. If she is still not bouncy enough for you at the top end then start changing the back sprocket, I would say no more than one tooth at a time until you get what you desire.

Am I right in thinking the FZR has the same lump as the 04 R1 (bottom end)?

Gearing from a website? Well I never what next? :) I spent a number or years racing big bikes, the last year in superstocks. Set up is a very personal thing, although a gearing chart gives info it does not take into consideration an important part of the motorcycle........ YOU! How you ride the bike will determine what gearing you need and it is very much a step by step process to find out what is right for you, never make radical changes to the set up, tip toe your progress.

Go down one on the front, it will take you in the right direction and then you can fine tune the rear.

I raced GSXR100'S for three years, we never went more than four teeth from standard even for Snetterton (175mph back straight). With these modern big engines it's all about torque, so gearing changes can have massive impact on how the bike rides.

Btw: If you go down 8 teeth you will need to split the chain and take a link or two out.

  4. Do you really think that you could live comfortably on the income generated by a few tables and serving up Thai food? Have you ever seen the people owning food stalls drive off to a comfortable home in transport of a recent vintage at the end of their working day?

Actually yes. The guy at the middle of Ekkamai 12 serves possibly the best chicken noodles in BKK (well worth a visit if you can get a table) he clears 10 grand a day profit seven days a week. The guy outside my studio sells coffee's and some sort of weird nesquick/bread combination which the Thai youth seems to go potty for, no idea of profit but he must unload over 40 loaves of bread a day from his shiny late model Toyota.

Good money in food stalls, been trying to get the recipe for the noodle soup out of the Bangkok guy for over two years, offered him a 50-50 deal on another stall, but he won't spill the beans..... I think he may put weed in it!

Owning a retail business in Thailand? Work 3 times as hard for little or no thanks. If you can deal with that then living here has benefits.

The OP should take some good from the experience. "What dont kill you makes you stranger!"

  5. Just out of interest, why are you getting something tattooed in Thai when you can't read it yourself?

That's a very good question. And it is pretty much the Thai reaction. Personally I would not get Thai text tattooed on myself, it seems to be a bit of a fad in the west and in Thailand the locals really don't understand why?

Not to mention how much gets lost in translation.

  6. You could try to do a sprocket & chain conversion..

The change in pick up would be significant

IMO Cheapest / safest mod to protect the integrity of the engine.

    I would get an X1R

    Sprocket / Chain ??

    Auto airblade !!

Since UBC has given me Discovery Turbo and "biker build off" and since the Mio was sold to some nutty Thai girl who thinks she is the next Rossi: I am finding this conversation quite enjoyable.

I have an urge to drag a Honda Airblade up the stairs and take a grinder to it! Is a chain and sprocket conversion even possible with machined parts? If so a 13 on the front and 52 rear would be highly entertaining, throw in the 170 big bore and the longer swing arm and chubby wheels would be a must :)

    Think of the wheelies..... :D

  7. A little more realistically, this is dependent on the province . . .and the cop.

Are you trying to scare the OP?

I don't have any stamp on my aftermarket exhaust and have never had a ticket with my airblade, in 7 months driving in Chiang Mai town..

It is pretty loud, but only when throttle is wide open.

I've even gotten a ticket for no helmet, but no mention about the exhaust.

Not at all. You are truly blessed to live in Chiang Mai, I was speaking from my own experience down here in the jewel of the Eastern seaboard.

Aftermarket pipes in Thailand: NMF, Endurance, DBS, have no such " stamped as road legal" -at least I've never seen one.

I have seen stock exhaust muffler outer chrome "covers" welded OVER stainless steel aftermarket exhausts.

A sonic muffler is a good example.

A road legal replacement pipe carries the stamp, take my word for it or check for yourself.

Saving weight (realistically- on a street legal bike) can NOT give you the same performance as a bigger piston, pipe, cam, carb, and CDI.

Other than the pipe, which doesn't weight 50 kilos BTW, there's not much to take off to save weight.

And what if you ride with a passenger? Or you weigh alot?

I didn't say that it would achieve the same power output as the engine mods did I? What I said was weight saving is where you start. I know a pipe does not weigh 50 kilo's (humor?). If you say that there is not much to take off to save weight then it must be so, however why not just try dropping a pipe and a stock flywheel on a set of scales, both replaceable parts. I would wager almost an 8 kilo saving right there over stock. That's 8 kilos the bike doesn't have to drag fully loaded.

If you want a faster bike, a pipe alone will mostly only make it louder, really. You need more.

For an airblade/click (same engine) there's a limit to the piston size if you dont want to bore the cases - you can NOT do a 170cc motor by modifying the top end alone. And it wouldn't work without a bigger carb, pipe, and the stock CDI limits the top speed as well.

I hope there's no more posts about that miata!

We are I acknowledge speaking scooters here: But as a rule of thumb on big bikes a pipe and map (jetting) is the biggest and cheapest horsepower gain you can make. Roughly 10bhp at the back wheel on a GSXR for example.

I am no Honda expert but are you sure the click and airblade share the same engine? Bottom end perhaps but I thought the click was a 110 and the Airblade a 125? I could be wrong of course as I am thinking of the Yamaha models and wonder why Honda would use the same lump in the two models?

The limit to the piston size without a rebore would be a standard piston no? even on a worn motor if you wanted to go oversize by say .25 then the barrel would need to be honed and you wont need to modify the engine casing at all.

As I said I am no expert on Airblades, I am just applying the same logic as I would apply for either a race bike or a street rebuild. The LAST thing you do to get performance is to re bore. That said on my last project we took an 1100M GSXR up to 1216cc which was a lot of fun :)

  8. What has that ghost movie got to do with Santika?

Soundman, my staff tell me that the attached portion does speak about Santika....at the top. "Based on the true story of Santika" or thereabouts is the translation.

    Incorrect James.

At the top it says ซานติฆ่า as opposed to the Club's name ซานติกา

Dont i feel like the f**king a hole. Well I just balled out the staff and fired one of them!

I understand (probably incorrectly), that it's a play on words. Anyways, too close for comfort.

    Easy mistake given the artwork!

  9. I think you should make a vdo of Butch walking backwards into rooms. Its a hoot. And why not also work on his evident skill and turn it into something fun, like surfing backwards. See the vdo clip below of a dog surfer for example :D

As for getting a 'mate' for Butch, sure, why not?

The chances of him accepting a female puppy into the home are high, as long as you take care to introduce them properly. If you need any tips on that let me know.

Adult females maybe more risky and more care needed.

Males definitely not. But your dog may be an exception to that rule too - maybe he's gay :)

    Go Butch!

We have no puppies now I'm afraid. Had a litter due on Christmas Day, but discovered a few weeks ago that the girl was having a phantom pregnancy. She's fine, but little ones for Christmas. Boo hoo.

If I get a chance I will video him and post it. As for surfing I think he is spoiled enough without adding a Quicksilver surfboard to his list of toys!

Your suggestion he may be gay had me laughing..... he is a strange dog, but I just think he has a great sense of humor.

Yes please do give the tips for introducing a new puppy, I think it would be good info in the thread and I am on the verge of an impulse purchase when a puppy comes up for sale.

  10. Just to add: If you do buy any aftermarket parts such as an exhaust system then check it is stamped as road legal. It should have a round emblem embossed in the metal. It is I suppose the equivalent of the TUV stamp in Europe.

A farang with an aftermarket pipe is worth at least 1000 baht to the cops. "Too Noisy!". However when you point at the stamp on the exhaust there is much satisfaction to be gained from watching their face drop. Which is usually short lived unless you have an International Driving License handy.

  11. If you want to get more performance out of an airblade then personally I wouldn't jump straight into a re-bore and piston kit, the quality piston kits do not cost 3500 and someone like Vic Rom's place in BKK will want somewhere near 5000 to bore it out and fit the kit.

If you want performance lighten it. Any standard exhaust manufactured by Honda weighs in excess of 50 kilo's... or feels like when off the bike!

I did a mio which was very fast with no engine work as such other than clutch springs which gave it a faster hit off the line, the Thai guy who worked on it also played with the ignition which made a big difference but I am not sure exactly what he replaced/modified. We added a bigger carb and carved and drilled the airbox for more air flow. The Mio was also de-restricted, again I didn't pay attention as to how and I have no idea if the Airblade is even restricted.

If you want faster then get lighter before you do anything else.... POWER TO WEIGHT RATIO....... exhaust, shocks, wheels etc etc. Amazing saving on weight over standard stuff. Engine work should be your last resort, especially on something you have on the road. Unlikely but insurance and legality can come in to play in the case of an accident.

Also keep all your bits, put the original parts back on when you want to sell it as nothing hits resale value like modifications do.

  12. It would be good if some of the local press (Howard, where are you now?) would put a story like this on the frontpage so perhaps someone who can and will make a difference learns about it.

The way hospitals here, particularly BPH, would be cause for criminal lawsuits in the west.

Sorry to say, it really wouldn't make any difference. A few years ago, maybe some of you remember, a friend of mine was involved in a very bad accident and was taken to BKK hospital in Pattaya. He was fully employed and had insurance, but was refused treatment because he had no I.D. or money in his pockets. He was unconscious, and was transferred to chonburi where he died en route, for the lack of blood. This was front page news in the Pattaya People paper, with a headline titled How Much Is A Life Worth. So you see doesn't make any difference. If you have no I.D. or money BHP will refuse treatment.

    Barry

Yes I remember this incident only too well. I stopped to offer what help I could to the conscious victim. I waited with him until the ambulance arrived and checked where he was being taken. I was relieved when told BPH as all I knew of the place was the advertising: And that looks really professional and dare I say caring? I followed the ambulance up the Sukhumvit to double check he was indeed going to BPH and would be OK.

The following week I read what had happened to the guy and I cant describe the feeling. To this day I wish I had accompanied him to the hospital. I made the mistake of assuming a human life is of worth and that everyone else was on the same page, sadly I was wrong and apparently a life here is measured by the contents of your pocket at the time and nothing else.

I was new at the time, clueless. I wish I could turn back the clock given what I now know.....

  13. Go on! You're winding me up right?

That's one funny dude you've got there. He must be a riot. I've never known that with any dog, any breed.

At what age did he start doing that and have you tried to train him out of it? he obviously thinks (though I still think you are winding me up) that's the way it has to be done. He must have learnt it somewhere.

    Looks lovely.

No idea when it started. We went down the medical route first, then I thought maybe a snake had tried to get in to get him or another animal had scared him (yes I am really reaching way out there) and now we just accept it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with him and he can get in forward at speed if he spots a biscuit. But if there is no treat he will just u turn and reverse :)

I think my confusion amuses him.

Thanks, he is lovely. Well mannered, a fantastic sense of humor and the best guard dog I have ever had. I really don't know what I would do without him.

What are your thoughts on another EBT to keep him company? I was thinking a bitch puppy.

  14. For those who are insured, I believe they can pre-register with BPH.

And if you carry insurance then BPH will make sure you are registered and everything is in order before they treat you.

So remember to release the pressure on the tourniquet every 15 seconds while they sign you in. :)

    post-45905-1261621505.jpg

I will have to get a good shot of him standing for you. Here are some of his cute? pictures.

The pink bed is the only bed not to get destroyed in a fit of boredom.

I wonder if you have ever come across this before in an English Bull Terrier? Butch will only enter a room backwards, if you call him he will turnaround and reverse in. I thought it may be his balance or eyesight and he may have a problem with his hearing (more vets bills), but no, he is fine. Why he does this we have no idea! :)

  16. I have only one question - Where do you get your information from

Some people paying 20,000 + ? who ever pays that is stupid. or don't know anything.

    Hey thanks :D

Tell me: How exactly you would deal with this situation?

Last year I endeavored to renew w.p. myself, get to immigration to do my Visa first and low and behold there is a problem, however the problem can be solved if I go and talk to a company who "specialize" in visa and work permits. By a stroke of pure luck the company is owned by the wife of the immigration officer... how lucky am I?

Kerching! 20k later and I knew something: I knew I had gotten screwed.

Thanks for the math, or maths education if you prefer? But can anyone actually give me some useful advice as to how to circumnavigate these parasites? Can I renew my existing wp before my current wp and visa run out or do I have to wait and do the visa first then the wp?

If it is visa first then I guess I am going to be stupid again this year. Maybe I should write a letter of complaint to someone :)

  17. And if anyone has a litter of pups I am looking for a white with black bitch, does not have to be pedigree just a nice pup. Or I would consider a juvenile if anyone was looking to place a bitch that perhaps needs a lot of attention or has become a burden?

It is a family home and would be well looked after, not to mention company for his lordship.

  18. EBT's are very sociable, need human company and they get upset and mischievous if they are left alone for longer than a few hours.

If you expect to have to leave the dog alone all day, definitely better not to get an EBT. It will be thoroughly miserable. And will probably tear the dog house down and anything else it can find to have fun with while nobody is there to play with it.

As for the pool, EBT's won't go swimming by choice. If you mean a 'pond' as opposed to a swimming pool, they may go for a paddle, but again, no swimming.

    Or minutes!!

Couldn't agree with choosing a different breed. Bullies are in my opinion by far the best dog to own but also the hardest work. I have a two year old named Butch, his grandad was a Thai Champion and he is a lovely dog, sometimes too intelligent! Recently on a trip to Bangkok I stopped at the services for longer than usual (windows open ice cold interior in the car) I got back and my handbrake had half disappeared, he looked sorry but was still expectant of his chicken nuggets!!

With regard to diet: He eats what I eat. Fresh produce from the market including vegetables and it is a healthy diet with just occasional junk! Fish, white meat etc. He is in perfect health now, we had some issues when he was on dog food. I remember our dogs from when I was a child, they ate the leftovers and all lived to a good age. I think you can scare yourself silly when it comes to diet with these dogs, the most important thing is that they are happy and loved, EBT's are possibly one of the most sensitive breeds I have come across, if they are not happy it will show in their general health and appearance. Again my opinion but there are so many opinions out there I thought I would throw mine in the mix!

I will post some pictures of Butchy Boy later, he is soon available to cover bitches for a small fee or pick of the litter, its not a business for me so it would be a small fee... he is just at that age where he needs some "company" :D

Great thread btw I never realized so many people here were into EBT's I thought it was just me that had huge air-con bills!!

Sorry to go on.... the actual point of my reply is that my EBT loves to swim! I try my best not to take him near water! It would not surprise me that he is the exception to the rule :)

  19. From 100 baht to 600 baht.

I wonder why most people pay 20-30,000 baht for it.

Maybe that fee will also go up by a factor 6

    blink:

I also wonder why people pay 20 to 30,000 Baht for a WP...the application fee used to be 100 Baht (now 600) and the approval fee was a couple of 1000, nothing dramatic. The paperwork is done by my secretary (guess most foreigners working here have one) and then you waste hal a day of your life at the labour department for submitting the application.

Any chance you could either post or pm a process flow, exactly what you do for a renewal? I am one of those farang without a secretary and I am sick of the 20k rip off for a renewal every year!

Which comes first the visa or the work permit?

  20. I wouldn't advise an electric system for spraying top coat clear. You wont get a great finish and I think you will find the system difficult over time, You would be better investing in a small spray gun such as a Sata minijet or the new Iwata. Pm if your interested in details.

  21. I think the bottom line is pretty much all of us dog lovers have the image of a very distinct looking dog when we hear the name Jack Russell. The father of your pups is that image. The mother isn't.

If you want to argue that technically speaking she is a Jack Russell then fine, but unless you have documentation to prove that, it remains just your opinion. As it is just my opinion that she isn't a thoroughbred. Nothing wrong with that by the way. I'm sure she's a lovely dog and her pups will make great pets.

Had several JR's. The mother is a Jack Russel. In my opinion.

  22. Index helmets are still made of polycarbonate, says it on the tag. The graphics on an Index is a pvc sticker. Technically you can prime over the sticker and paint it and it should be ok.The sticker should provide a barrier so the paint never makes contact with the polycarbonate shell.

Technically the index should not have a sticker on it as the adhesives are a light solvent so will in time weaken the helmet. Not a good choice in my opinion. And with regard to painting over the sticker? Well then your adhesion will only be as good as the lifetime of the sticker, not the way to go with paint: that is if the PVC doesn't "pickle" the clear coat as 2k can be quite fickle.
