  1. I think some Argentinians may have some issues with Hezbollah's targeting, but be that as it may - if talking about Kao Sarn road - that's a pretty target-rich area (assuming you're looking for Israeli/Jewish ones).

As to their focus - while true that they concentrate a lot of effort vs, Israel, they are also very much invested in the ongoing power struggle within Lebanon. This isn't always done on a political level, as the late prime minister found out. Attacks against political rivals are pretty common, and sadly, targeting isn't much better at home, it seems.

Yeah, for sure Hezbollah's anti-Israeli campaigns relates to the struggle for power in Lebanon.

I'm not sure the accused actions in Argentina are relavent. That was when Israel still occupied southern Lebanon.

  2. If Iran would stop funding the idiots who for idealogical reasons think it is necessary to kill Westerners wherever they may be, then the likelihood of Iran being bombed would be greatly reduced.

Of course this logic will not be recognized in Tehran as it is run by a moron midget and old men who think that killing non-believers buys them a ticket to heaven.

Hezbollah isn't a group that "think it is necessary to kill Westerners wherever they may be."

Their targets are politcal and military and their focus on Israeli influence in Lebanon. That's why a warning about targeting tourist areas desn't sound like Hezbollah... they don't target random civilians.

And the public statements from the Thai government might sound a bit amuzing or odd... but they aren't stupid and they know how to control things. They don't want a terrorist attack here. It would hurt Thailand's international image.

If they really thought the guy that they brought in for questioning was dangerous or if their was a real threat, they would have never let him go so quickly.

Oh, and some other post mentions 800+ bus bombings in Israel. That's not Hezbollah, either. Not all groups labeled as "terrorist" are the same, do the same things or have the same political agenda.

  3. It wouldn't be an attack ON Thailand! It would be an attack IN Thailand. Geez!

Was the Bali event an attack on Indonesia? No.

Was the Argentina event an attack on Argentina? No.

Was the historic Thailand Israeli embassy event an attack on Thailand? No.

No, not an attack against Thailand, but it would certainly have a detrimental effect on Thailands toursim, economy and international image.

Thailand would not want an attack here and, since Iran has economic interests here, they have no interest in straining Thai-Iranian relations.

Stop mentioning the Thailand Israeli embassy attack. That was before the Lebanese Civil War and is of no relavence to Hezbollah. Also well before the Iranian Revolution.

  4. ...In your dreams will I trust the Thai government's comments on anything after their "expert" advice on the floods.

Hezbollah is only for few countries, Israel, USA, Canada a terrorist organisation.

They are part of the elected government in Lebanon. Thailand has no problem with them and they are no threat to Thailand.

Also Holland, the UK, and Australia. Also, Hezbollah is closely linked with Iran and depends on their massive support and that is a fact.

It still doesn't change the fact that Hezbollah is of little interest to Thailand. Being "linked to Iran" is not a crime in Thailand.

  5. #2... If this really is Hezbollah, why would they care about the urination on Taliban members. Hezbollah isn't from or interested in Afghanistan.

Yes and no. The fact is that Iran is deeply involved in infiltrating in Afghanistan and has been described by locals as a cancer. Iran is heavily into setting up proxy powers/proxy wars in their general region and obviously their nuclear ambitions are a play to be the undisputed big power in the middle east. But I think much more likely right now to do mostly with the nuclear scientist murders and the fact that the economic sanctions on Iran are causing a lot of pain there now.

Yeah, no way Hezbollah or Iran would waste effort to attack based upon the urination thing. Hezbollah is funded by Iran and Syria but they do things that match their agenda, and their agenda often coincides with Iran.

Iran also funded the ANC, but the ANC wouldn't go 5,000 kms away to take some action to benefit Iran or another of Iran's beneficiaries like ETA.

The whole thing is suspicous. Iran has a good political and economic relationship with Thailand... I doubt they would sanction an attack here.

More likely are either... 1) Israel and the US are trying to drum up domestic and international support for their imminent attack on iran, OR... 2) There is a terrorist threat but not related to Hezbollah.

  6. Some points:

    1

.Remember Bali? The thing is besides a nightclub I can't think of anywhere that would not have the locals out-numbering tourists 10-1.

I don't know about the ratio...but my uneducated guess is that it is a nightclub with many farang tourist customers.

    2. Why Americans specifically?

Did you see the recent photos in the news of those Marines supposedly urinating on those Taliban bodies in Afghanistan?

    3. Why Thailand?

NATO...most European countries...including the U.K. ... are part of NATO.

  7. Thailand just arrested a terrorist.

    http://www.nytimes.c...rror-alert.html

Well done to the Thai Authorities for getting on top of this

True, but without the Israelis tipping them off, they wouldn't have had a clue.

But what really happened? They brought in one guy with "links" to Hezbollah, which is a legitimite political entiity... Not everyone in the organization is either a terrorist or part of its military wing.

The guy hasn't done anything to warrant an arrest.

And I guess there were three other people that they were warned about at the end of December but they already left the country.

  8. BTW, Hezbollah and Iran -- joined at the hip.

    A few things are odd...

    1. Chalerm says they were first told the terrorists were Palestinian and then they turned out to be Hezbollah. Really? Israel knew of a terrorist attack but didn't know from whom it was coming?
    2. The threat was reported by the US to be areas where Western tourists frequent. I could buy the Israeli Embassy as a target, but Hezbollah doesn't target random civilians. Their targets are specifically military or political.
    3. Why would Iran approve of such an attack? They have good relations with and have economic interests in Thailand.

My favorite Chalerm quote of the day:

"And I can guarantee ... no terrorist attacks will be allowed to take place. If they have disagreement, [they should] go fight somewhere else."

Case closed, I think the Mods should lock the thread now.

  9. I am seriously doubting if anyone has actually been caught at all. More jumping the gun?

"Now Deputy PM Chalerm is quoted as saying 1 Lebanese has been invited for questioning with regards to terrorist threat" No longer arrested, but invited.

    http://twitter.com/T...73173505&ref=nf

Wikileaks has already released the first 2 questions to be asked during this invitational meeting:

    1) Would prefer pad prik kaeng koong or pad phreo wahn gai?

    2) Beer Chang or Beer Singha?

  10. Who are these "primary defeated enemies" who have been allowed self determination. Iraq? It must be Iraq as the US haven't defeated anyone else, since WWII. Plus they weren't supposed to be your enemy, Sadam and his playing cards were. And I don't call what you have left behind in Iraq self determination, I call it a bloody mess that will last for decades.

    Are you still watching Fox?

    Hey, you're forgetting Grenada!

  11. Summary of this afternoon's events...

3:00PM: US Embassy issues email warning of possible (no imminent, no possible, no imminent) terrorist attack in Bangkok targeting Westerners.

    3:05PM: US recalls warning emails.

3:10PM: US sends emails to ignore recalls, this is a real warning.

5:00PM: Thai Foreign Minister says they know about the suspects, are tracking them and will probably arrest them tonight.

5:15PM: Thai government announces that they arrested 2 Lebanese nationals linked to Hezbollah (no correct that, one arrest... the other one already fled the country).

5:20PM: Thai government says Israel warned them a couple of weeks ago about these 2 people but not sure why since the arrested man says he's not a terrorist.

Conclusion: Nothing to see here. Thank you, Chalerm!

  12. This is a topic about the terrorist attack warning.

Do we really need to have 100 posts about World War II. That was 70 years ago. What is the relevance to this thread?

It is because if America would have reacted sooner at least 10 million Asias lives and 20 million Europeans lives would have been saved.

That is the reason. You must be German now I understand

No, I'm not German. But I fail to see how what happened 70 years ago has to do with any contemporary government.

Nor do I get offended by what others say about the government of my home country, and I don't judge people based upon what their government does now, let alone 70 years ago. In fact, I really don't care what the nationality is of people I meet.

All the people in WWII are long dead... This is a Thailand News forum, WWII posts belong in a Historical Bickering forum.

  13. Just saw this in the Bloomberg story on the warning.

Thai government spokesman Thitima Chaisang had no immediate comment when reached by phone. Police spokesman Prawut Thavornsiri and Army spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd didn’t answer calls to their mobile phones. [Editorial note: yes, but it's Friday afternoon!]

The threat is “generic” and likely related to U.S. moves to sanction Iran over its nuclear weapons program, according to Anthony Davis, a Bangkok-based analyst at IHS Jane’s.

The U.S. is “looking at pro-Iranian groups that might possibly react to what may very well go down in the Straits of Hormuz and possibly beyond,” Davis said. “It seems unlikely that terrorist attacks would be launched before the situation in the Middle East has escalated significantly.”

    http://www.bloomberg...rist-areas.html

Hmmm.... Intersting. I guess pro-Iranian terrorist group is different from Iran itself. But Iran has good relations with Thailand. I doubt they would be happy with a terrorist attack here.

On a side note, some people mentioned Mumbai and Bali but those were domestic terrorists, not foreign, and they had a domestic agenda. That's not the same as this.

On an additional sidenote, both my Fireforx and IE froze as soon as I opened the US Embassy link. Coincidence or no?

  14. Its a separatist movement, its causes are numerous, political, cultural, linguistic etc.

Thailand's record of treating its ethnic minority's also contributed to this conflict.

It is not a movement fuelled by religious zeal, you need to get away from that mind set.

What should be noted here is the freedom of operation the separatist's have.

The Thai security forces are a long way behind the curve.

Have to disagree with you it is religiously inspired. You will note they want to set up their own government not be a part of Malaysia which is not subject to strict Shari law.

Why would they want to be different than all the other fanatic Muslim groups in the world. If it is political as you suggest would it not follow that part of the rebels would be Buddest?

It's about ethnicity and nationality. It's a separatist movement. The Buddhists are Thai.

They're ethnically Malay but but why would they want to join Malayasia if they were never part of it? They don't have any poiltical links to the Malaysian government, nor does Malaysia stake a claim to the area.

Was the IRA a fanatical Catholic group?

  15. ^ Yeah, the problem is that, whatever the outcome with Thaksin, this is an example of how Thailand is only a "democracy" in name.

Here, politics are about people... People obtain win elections so that they can further personal agendas.

The PTP do have the control of parliament and can advance their platform. Unfortunately, they're platform isn't about policy but about individual people (or a person, in this case).

If they wanted to advance the cause of the "rural poor," they could enact programs to do so. But they don't... sure, minimum wage will be increased but that's more like a coupon to entice votes rather than part of an overall policy platform. Also, in this case, "rural poor" means people that vote for them... rural people in Southern Thailand don't count.

The PTP know that bringing Thaksin back will lead to increased opposition and distractions... but it's obvious that they'd prefer to spend time resources on defending this than, say, actually doing things that might actually lead to a more equitable distribution of wealth and greater socioeconomic mobility.

And, really, why would they need to do anything else? They know that they'll get a majority of parliament seats no matter what they do.

  16. A question for the people living in flooded areas and complaining about the BBB.... why don't you go somewhere dry?

One can rent a nice little guest house in Khorat for about 12,000 Baht per month. I know there are homestays in Kanchanaburi offering flood victims rates of 100 Baht per night.

Or, if one doesn't want or can't spend any money, one can go to the Farang Flood Victim Center in Sukhimvit. There one can stay for FREE, get 2 FREE MEALS and get FREE DRINKING WATER. The FREE MEALS and FREE DRINKING WATER must be worth at least 200 Baht per day... Stay for 1 month, and you've made a sweet 6,000 Baht, which is a nice compliment to the 5,000 government money coming your way.

Why don't we just flood your area and then you can do what you are recommending others to do...

Uh, my area will flood soon enough LOL. And, yeah, I'm not going to sit in water while complaining that my area is flooded because the fish farmers in Bangkhuntian are blocking the flow of the flood.

Too many people seem to have a philosophy of life of.... "My lollipop fell on the ground and now it's dirty. I want everyone else to have a dirty lollipop, too!"
