  1. I need to see an orthodontist to fix my slightly protruding jaw problem. It is bloody expensive to get it done by a private doctor in Singapore. The government doctors use an apprentice as their helper for maybe 30% less.

    Any recommendations?

Do you think it would be a good idea for me to get my 360 degree X-ray from my current dentist or should I take a new one in Bangkok? How much would it cost in Bangkok? I remember I paid about 2500 THB for a consultation + 360 x-ray scan in Singapore. I think I might have to pay another 2500 THB to get the x-ray film!

  2. I quit buying bottled water when I removed the seal, took the cap off and found mosquito larvae swimming in the bottle. What other kinds of nasty creatures were in that bottle?

Yikes! This confirms my fears about bottled water. They may not be as clean as we think.

  3. I am in the process of moving to Bangkok. I have decided that I shall not use a shipping agent because I am afraid of the huge costs and the scams.

There are only a few things that I would like to bring to Bangkok.

    - 2 LCD Monitors in their original boxes that look like briefcases

    - 2 PCs... I shall not bring the casing with me. I shall remove all the internal hardware and just bring whatever is inside the casing.

    - Network devices like router, switch, print server

Do you think they will let me pass without taxing me? All my items above are used and over 6 months old with proof of purchase. I am entering Thailand on a 1 year ED visa.

  4. Thanks...

I think I saw an add at Central Lad Phrao with a red electric bicycle. I am not 100% sure about it. I will check it out soon.

  5. Thanks. I think I will stick with DTAC then. I just found out that there isn't a free incoming call practice in Thailand. I will get a mobile plan from DTAC once I have moved here later this month. I need to go back to my country this week to settle my visa.

  6. Just an update on my situation: I was able to obtain the import permits for both my cat and dog via email. It is not necessary to apply for the permits in person. I seriously doubt I'll need to use the permits, but it's nice to have them just in case. Here is the process for obtaining the permits from outside of Thailand:

1 - Obtain all necessary vaccination records, health certificates, microchip info, etc...

2 - Download and fill out Form No 1/1, found here.

3 - Call AQS at Suvarnabhumi Airport and let them know your situation. They will tell you to fax Form 1/1 along with all health certificates and other documents. It is a good idea to include a cover letter indicating your flight number, exact time and date of arrival, and details of the animals you plan to bring. Make sure to include your email address!

    4 - Fax all of the above to: +66 2134 3640.

5 - Wait 5-7 days to receive your import permit by email.

Fifteen days isn't necessarily needed, but I would suggest you give yourself at least ten days. It helps to have someone who can speak fluent Thai also.

Thanks for the information. I need to do the above soon. I have found an apartment in Bangkok and I will be moving my pets to Bangkok soon.

  7. My friend recommended me DTAC a couple of years ago so I stuck with this brand of prepaid SIM every time I visit Bangkok.

During my current trip, I noticed the value in the SIM decreases rather rapidly. Therefore, I am wondering if there are better alternatives out there.

What other brands do you guys use and why?

  8. I have Googled electric bicycles and they seem to be outside of Bangkok. Are there any shops in Bangkok that sell these? I think it would be very convenient for me to ride one out of my soi to the BTS.

The "golf cart" that drives me out seems to run pretty slow so I don't think it would be that much of a difference for me if I ride a bike except that the service ends at 9 PM.

  9. I am thinking of getting an electric bicycle or scooter to travel from my apartment to the BTS station near my place. Do you think it would be safe to park my bike near a BTS? I wonder if I should get an e-bike that looks more like a scooter or a bicycle.

  10. I just opened a personal bank account at a Kasikorn bank branch. They only asked for my passport, Thailand address, email address and mobile number. I bought a dtac prepaid card when I landed at the airport. Minimum deposit is 500 THB. 300 THB for the ATM card, which is a VISA debit card. I also applied for internet banking, which is free. The bank teller told me that it would be activated within 3 days.

I also just learnt that Kasikorn bank is actually a Chinese Thai farmers' bank. Interesting....

  11. I am looking for a an apartment to rent in Bangkok. I prefer apartment because I do not wish to have a place that is too big, which will take a lot of time and effort to clean.

    Some of my requirements:

    - 1 bedroom or studio

    - Kitchen preferable

    - No balcony

    - Windows must have grilles or can be easily

    - Cat friendly - A MUST

    - Aircon

    - Internet

    - 5000 THB or less

    - Near BTS/MRT around Sukumvit Soi 71

    - Fridge

    - Washing machine

Let me know what I need to have besides money to rent an apartment. I am a foreigner and I do not have any work permit at the moment. I am looking for a job. Once I have received an employment letter, I will fly back to my country to apply for a non-immigration visa, bring my cats to Bangkok with me, move my stuff to the apartment and apply for work permit through my employer.

Send me a PM about your offers. I will be in Bangkok next Monday.

  12. But if you read through some of the posts of people's personal experiences, it seems that importation slip isn't really necessary in most cases. When it is necessary, you can get it upon arrival.

Leaving my animals in Taiwan while I go to BKK to personally deliver that form isn't an option; my pets have to come with me as they have nowhere to stay in Taiwan. I will try to sort out that form before I board the plane, but if I can't I won't be too worried about it.

How do we inform AQS about our pets' arrival? I don't think we could just board them on a plane and bring them to the Bangkok airport just like that. I shall email AQS and ask them about this. They might accept email and fax applications.

  13. You can find the application form for importing live animals into Thailand here:

    http://www.dld.go.th/dcontrol/09Download/Move/form_r1-1.doc

It needs to be sent to Thailand not less than 15 days prior to arrival!:

The form is a bit confusing. I have a few questions on what to fill in for some of the fields:

    1. To - who do I address this to? To Whom It May Concern good enough?

    2. would like to import , export, pass animals/ animal remains through the

kingdom by as the following items. - I would tick the import field. But kingdom by ______ as the following items ?? What is this?

    3. quarantine at - May I put home?
