For Americans, depending on where they live, it can be very difficult to impossible to get a COVID test 72 hours before flying...

Because, lots of places won't provide testing unless you're sick or have symptoms, because there's such a shortage of testing capacity in the U.S., and significant delays in even getting test results back if you are tested.  Higher priority people/cases are first in line, and no-symptom intl travelers don't have priority.

You are so right about the testing problem in USA but this brings up a question. I think some people will have to take a flight in order to connect to the Repatriation Flight. Does the test have to be done 72 hours before first flight or repatriation flight ?

  2. The Military already took over one of the 10 A340’s which  THAI stopped using years ago ( Nine are still sitting around Thai airports) but presumably this is for the Air Force. Also I distinctly remember that the Royal Thai Police bought a new passenger jet a few months ago to cart around Little Fatty. Wonder when the first submarine will arrive !

  3. They really need to develop a good testing program at the airports with quick tests paid for by passengers....then maybe have people follow up with a second test a week or two later at a hospital if they think it’s needed. Quarantine program will not work with large numbers of people. They talk about tourists returning in September but no mention of those with Elite visas or retirement visas without Thai spouse. These groups should be next ; hopefully by then the government will have developed workable plans....

  4. Getting back to the subject at hand it would seem that the government could manage 2 flights a week by expanding texting and quarantine areas. A couple of A-380’s might be perfect for this job. BDX just announced a new 15 minute test which might be ideal for airports. Since we are now into July it is a bit surprising that all of the Thais who wish to be repatriated have not been sent home yet.

  5. This boat cannot be restored as its design was flawed and it is not a seaworthy vessel under any circumstances. It was poorly constructed too and I believe it has a truck engine, not one specifically designed for marine use. Chop it up or sink it. Can you imagine what the Chinese would say if this boat was returned to service !!!

  6. I think they already announced THAI would not fly till September and I am guessing they want to get by the August court date first.  I really can’t imagine acceptance of a genuine and workable rehab plan by the creditors. Their assets probably include all of the A 340 planes which have not flown for years.

  7. Now they are talking about bringing people directly to Phuket with freedom there and eventually they would be allowed to travel freely once it was known they were safe. Not a bad idea. One group I never hear mentioned- those people with non immigrant visas who are currently locked out of the country. These people are not tourists and should be given priority before real tourists are allowed back into the country.

  8. I read that 53 of their planes are leased including 30 from Airbus.

Among THAI Airways’ leased planes are six A380s, fifteen A350-900s, fifteen A330-300s, and twenty A320-200s.
This would seem to indicate some Airbus planes are leased from leasing companies. The A-320’s belong to Thai Smile which has not really been mentioned.

Will be interesting to see how the leased planes are handled. Source : Simple Flying.

  9. On a night flight it should be perfectly reasonable to recline your seat. At other times I do not recline seat unless the person in front of me does so which gives a claustrophobic feeling for me. The airlines are really to blame by putting seats so close together.
