so do not Thai drivers NOTICE the black and white strips acrosss the roads ???!!! which mean GIVE way to pedestrians  !!!

Can you say where in the Thai Highway Code it says to 'give way to pedestrians'?

I've searched through the 2522 (1979) unofficial translation, searching for 'pedestrian crossing', but so far can only find about references to either prohibitions regarding parking near them, or pedestrians crossing at traffic lights. What I can't see is anything in that version defining rights for pedestrians at a crossing I can only see this (perhaps there's a newer version that does regulate it?):

Section 106. A pedestrian who wishes to cross the road at a
pedestrian crossing or junction having traffic light signal for use of road control, he or
she shall follow the following instruction:
    (1) when there appears red traffic light signal requiring conveyance to
stop at any side of the road, the pedestrian shall cross the road where the
conveyance is stopping, and he or she must cross the road at the pedestrian crossing
    (2) when there appears green traffic light signal allowing the
conveyance to pass at any side of the road, the pedestrian shall not cross the road
    on such side;
    (3) when there appears amber or green blinking traffic light signal at
any side of the road, the pedestrian who is not crossing the road shall wait on the
pavement, traffic island, or safety zone; but the pedestrian who is crossing the road
at the pedestrian crossing shall rapidly cross the road.

Section 107. The pedestrian who wishes to cross the road on the
path where a competent official is giving traffic signal, whether by hands and arms or
whistle sound signal, he or she shall comply with section 106 mutatis mutandis.

  2. I'm sorry to post about something which has already been closed, but someone asked recently and the topic was closed by a mod, saying "Mentioned in forum support."

I guessed that meant 'forum support desk', but so far I can't see anything about it?

Could someone provide a link to the topic where it was mentioned please, as I'm trying to sell something, and would like to know if it's possible or if it may be a long time yet before I can post?

    Thanks

Thanks for the reply and link, Crossy.

I thought the whole point of smart meters was that you had a display inside the house showing what you were using and the current price, so you could decide to do the laundry after midnight to save a few satangs. I don't see them changing the meter and installing that in under 10 minutes, so probably just a means of remote meter reading, at least to start with. Although as I said, "Thai" and "smart" opens a lot of possibilities.

That's foreign 'smart' meters that display inside your house.

We'll probably have to wait for PEA 4.0 for that feature on a Thai smart meter.

I've never had a problem getting tax refunds on the basis 'I'm retired' and won't be earning any more this year.

Application processed online and refund in my bank within 14 days.

Telling them you're overseas is a mistake you may live to regret.

I'm not retired, so did earn and wanted the refund.

I have no UK address or bank account, so it's not an option for me to 'not tell'.

Renew it online ticking the box allowing them to use your passport and former address.

Collect new D/L from your old address in the next 14 days.

Never tell any UK authorities you live outside the UK.

Unless you want to apply for a tax refund on the basis of having left the UK before the end of the last tax year you were paying PAYE.

I've done that twice in twenty years, receiving a 600UKP refund both times.

The second time was when I went back for a few months and happened to do some temporary work on PAYE.

Cor, that takes me back to college days decades ago!

Our lecturer taught us to remember the word 'CIVIL' in order to work out the order:

In a capacitive load, 'C', current 'I' leads voltage 'V', but conversely voltage 'V' follows current 'I' in a resistive load 'L'.

Also 'CIVIL' is one of the few words composed using Roman numerals: I see it as 104 and 49.

    (sorry!)

  7. My son has discovered Korean Samyang Ramen Noodles.

They're definitely spicier than any Thai packet noodles, which is fine apart from the appalling bright orange food colouring in them. They're ten times more expensive than the Thai ones.

I was washing the dishes after he'd eaten them and realised everything was bright orange. Not only was it difficult to remove, it was even on my fingers afterwards.

I don't know if it's safe, as it seems so strong.

I've attached pics of them. I don't know if the images are clear enough to see what the colouring might be, and if it's harmless?

Yes, the one of the few edible not too over priced cakes I have eaten were near the river, not far from Khaosan Road.    They say all the flower was imported from the west.  Taiwan and Hong Kong have better cake for half the price.  Cake flower cannot be cultivated in Thailand ?

We're getting in deep now - is there specifically a 'cake-flour'?

As a kid I can only recall my mum using plain flour and self-raising flour.

    How very true.

I had a staff member suffer the same fate in Pattaya years ago. The hospital kept her on life support for a few days waiting for her parents to arrive from up-country.

The hospital charged the parents for the extra days naturally.

Interesting, did the relatives request this or did the hospital make their own decision?

Not certain, as it about twenty years ago.

Our staff member told the hospital staff the relatives were on their way and it might be two days before they arrived. IIRC it was the hospital who kept the life support on, it wasn't discussed with our staff.
