Yes there are..........and trying another branch of the same bank can also work. Seems like staff can interpret "rules" as they see fit!

Also if you have the FET paperwork and then show the sale receipt for the condo that should do it. The source of funds sometimes seems to throw the bank staff, so a sale receipt can work.

FET paperwork. IIRC, is that the proof of bringing money into Thailand to buy a property, that you need when repatriating the funds back to the country of origin?

Or is that another kettle of fish completely?

    Asians love noise!

    Agreed.  I can't sleep if it's noisy.

One of the noisy things that that locals seem to like here is the sound of rain at night. They all say it's 'sabai' and makes them go to sleep. It just keeps me awake.

When I had a GoGo bar in a previous life, some of the staff slept upstairs in a large room. The water bill for the building was about 500 Baht a month. Except one month when it was over 4,000 Baht.

We at first thought it was a serious leak and were checking everywhere for a wet floor area.

Further examination by the mamasan revealed one of the girls had been turning on the sink tap in the communal room all night, every night. She and a couple of other girls said the sound of running water made them sleep easily.

They changed their minds when we made them pay the water bill though.

If the old 90 day report card is in the passport and the person turns up to do a 90 day report, then in someways it is understandable why the IO just goes ahead and processes it.

To be fair to immigration, there are a lot of people reporting daily and to physically check each and every persons passport / TM.6 for an entry that would have changed the report date is not really feasible, immigration are expecting people to know the rules and to report within the open period, which is not totally unreasonable considering that if somebody is having to do 90 day reports, then they are here for a long period.

That's a fair comment, and I can see your point of view, as the 90 day reporting itself has nothing to do with visa validity, permission to stay, etc.

There do seem to be quite a few people who just don't like going to immigration, and don't want to know about the regulations, my friend being one of them.

  4. As the OP,  an update:

My friend went to immigration a couple of days ago to do his 90 day report with the previous notification, despite having re-entered Thailand about two weeks ago, still having the previous 90 day report left in his passport.

He does worry about these things, even though I assured him it wasn’t necessary to do it yet. He refused to remove the old 90 day card, not being too au-fait with the regulations, and concerned he might cause himself a problem.

For the second time (for him) the IO ignored his entry stamp and TM6, and processed his 90 day registration based solely on the old 90 day notification date.

For the member who sent me a pm telling me, “If you don’t know what you are talking about please don’t comment with incorrect info”:

I was not commenting with incorrect info, but stating factually what had happened to my friend the previous year, and querying why it should happen.

So it has now happened again – erroneously by the IO by not checking all the details.

No it's the fine for being late or not making a 90 day report. 5,000 is the maximum fine. The standard fine is 2,000. They can charge 4,000 if you are caught and arrested. And they can charge 200 per day on top of any fine until it's paid.

    Oh right, thanks.

I thought it was to do with extension of stay. I had no idea there was such a potential large fine and a per-day one too with 90 day reporting.

Not that it worries me, as I always keep track on what I have to do and when.

The 90 day report records are maintained at the office where the reports are done. The local system is not tied into the national database.

What happened to him was that immigration only went by the date on the slip in his passport. One way to avoid that happening is to take the slip out of your passport.

    OK, UJ thanks.

As they scan they 90 day report barcode now and it prints out a new one with a minimum of fuss, I guessed as it was on the computer it would link to the national database, although you say it isn't, so no problem.

  7. My friend was just telling me he’s about to do his 90 day report, as he has the date stamped on the 90 day form from last time.

He’s been out of the country for 10 weeks, so I explained the count will restart from his latest re-entry date.

Not a problem, but he said the last time he did the same out-of-the-country-trip for 10 weeks, he went to immigration who only looked at his previous reporting date and processed it, giving him a new 90 day report date.

They obviously missed the re-entry stamp and TM6 dates. As it’s all on the immigration computer, I would have assumed (dangerous, I know) that it would have flagged up and refused to accept an invalid 90 day report date?

Ha ha yes! Obviously lacking presence of mind not to capitalise one that one quickly enough.

  10. I've just read about a new regulation haircut that's come into force.

I don't think I can post a link to a non-Nation news article, so I'll have to tell you it's an article in Khaosodenglish, under the heading 'New Buzz Cuts Imposed on All Thai Police, Soldiers'

While it didn't seem that important to me about hair length, something I thought that should be addressed was maybe an immediate ban on police wearing sunglasses and face masks, preventing you seeing who you're dealing with at those money-demanding-checkpoints.

Something I have in the car windscreen is a sign saying that the dashcam continuously uploads all the footage to the internet. More than once, when that has been spotted by the police I've been waved through straight away.

  11. The part about having to repay the first time car-buyer payment is true.

My wife bought her first car (first car in her name that is) when the scheme was running via the Yinluck government.

She applied for and received 100,000 Baht paid directly into her bank account. My wife also told me there was a stipulation that if you sold the car within four years, you had to repay the government the 100K Baht.

The Bangkok immigration website still has a working fees page. http://bangkok.immigration.go.th/en/base.php?page=fee (I get a security warning when go on that site)

Suvarnabhumi has a 200 baht service charge. No need for the form, photo or copies.

    Thanks UJ.

When I went to Home>Information>Fine  & Fee, it took me here: https://www.immigration.go.th/content/ค่าธรรมเนียม

I'm guessing you have a link from somewhere else then?

  13. What's the cost of a single or a multiple re-entry permit at a local immigration office?

I did a search on TV for it, but it didn't seem to find anything apart from Swampy, and I don't know if that's a different price to local offices?

The Thai immigration website is still difficult to navigate. If I look at the "fines and fees" page it throws up an error at the moment.

  14. Thanks for posting the Wiki link.

Using that, this wikii page: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renewable_energy_in_Thailand
    and another page https://ycharts.com/indicators/thailand_electricity_generation
    showing total electricity generation.

Looking at 2014 which seems the last year all those figures were available, it looks like this to me:
    Total electricity generated 168TWatts
    Total renewable energy 12GWatts
    Solar energy 100MWatts

That seems renewable energy was less than 1% of the total, and of that, solar looks like just a fraction of it.

Maybe it’s wrong to compare different charts, or perhaps I’ve completely misunderstood all of it?

  15. I remember reading the government saying they had increased the amount of solar power that is “to be generated” to 30% of the total generated nationally.

There were recently a couple of letters in the newspaper we can’t mention regarding this.

I wonder if anyone has any details of how much solar power is being generated at the moment, just to be able to compare it to the government’s pipe dream?

When accosted by beggars, smile and say (roughly) "Proong nii, sunyaa"  = Tomorrow, I promise. But don't go back for a week. You never say No in Thailand.

It was me who was accosted by the kid after money. I told him in no uncertain terms to go away.

I noticed he didn't say a word to Thais walking past him on their way in to the 7 Eleven, he only spoke to two ferangs.

Are you using the mobile app?

when the PWA link is opened it opens the bar code scanner and deducts the money from your account

    Ah right, I understand now.

I only use the online banking account for a desktop.

I haven't got as far as using a mobile app. I do worry if I lose my phone or a wi-fi connection I may be using is hacked, it could give someone access to my data and bank details. Bit untrusting I know, but I may come round to the idea at some point.

Thanks for posting all the details regarding it.

Kasikornbank has an option to pay utilities including PWA and a lot of other services on line using their banking app with no fees no doubt the other banks do also.

Saves time and money going to the offices and the service fee at 7-11

I have various online bank accounts and have just had a look at my Kasikornbank account.

I can't see anything for the PEA or PWA. Under the list for Public Utilities it only has MEA, unless, I'm looking in the wrong place?

    See the two screenshots:

    That's good.

I'm assuming using the Kasikornbank option you don't need Customer ref 1 and Customer ref 2, as you do with most utility bills? Those refs are not on the PEA or PWA bills.

  20. Being bored (or is that a boring person?) I keep track of the power outages in Udon.

In the past 4 years, we have had 44 power outages, ranging from 5 minutes to 11 hours.

Living out of the the town centre, you find everyone sits around wondering when the power's coming back, but no-one ever informs the PEA about it.

I know it won't stop the power outages, but I always make a point of calling the PEA call centre after thirty minutes.

Often they're not aware of anything if it's only one village.

Sometimes I call, they put me on hold for a minute while they check with Udon, and inform me of the situation.

I can recommend them as they pass the details on from the BKK call centre outwards, it definitely does not get ignored, unlike calling Udon directly, who do nothing (for days sometimes).

Call them on 1129. Have an electric bill handy the very first time only, to give them your reference number. After that, as long as you call using the same phone number, they will ask if they're talk to John Smith, and do you live at 123/45 Main road, etc.

Can't praise them enough for their help and making sure the fault is reported and dealt with.

  21. Have you tried AIS or DTAC?

I bought a Samsung J7 Pro a couple of months ago from AIS at half the price of the Samsung shop. Admittedly I had to sign-up for a year's 4G subscription, but I needed it anyway.

So it’s depends of the efficiency of the subcontractor.

    That's interesting.

The details are saved as a jpg, presumably to stop errors, or even deliberate cheating.

I remember in an area of Pattaya about fifteen years ago, the electric bill would arrive. A few days later someone else from the electric company came round to collect payment. If you paid this woman, the cost was exactly 50% of what was on the bill. She worked in the accounts office, so just marked it as 'paid' and pocketed the cash. I only found out about it when other bars in the area complained they had to now pay their bill in full.

It went on for years until an audit flushed her scam out into the open. Must have been a few million Baht's worth.
