  1. After reading the posts here, i will not be going to Mike's Burger any time soon unless there are any improvements.

When in silom, I just usually go to Coyote.. and now have tried a Lebanese restaurant (forgot the name), but its opposite Taco Loco. That's highly recommended for some really yummy food and good service. :o

Beirut, they are also in food by phone.

    Waerth

The Beirut recently opened a shop at Sukhumvit, near Soi 11, in addition to the other one at Ploenchit Center, next to Villa Market.

  2. So, by implication, you've been here a couple of decades longer than me, and you're still miserable? You really need to look at your life, pal.

Or, perhaps, like so many people, you've burnt your bridges back home? That's a shame. It's usually those who have no choices in life that are most bitter :-)

    Mr. Humility,

You're coming across like some insulting, loudmouth rich kid who is new in the neighborhood.

  3. Perhaps? That's funny. I suggest you spend a few more years here and get to know some locals.

One thing you are right about, there probably a hundred or so leading perfectly ordinary lives, loving and trusting their wives, never losing anything.

Cheating the Farang is a national pastime.

You really are an unhappy, bitter man, aren't you? Would you like to tell us your story?

Just another starry eyed newbie offering "sage" advice.

Why all the arrogant opinions when you really don't know what you are talking about?

Get back to me when you have a couple more decades experience, OK?

  4. Ahhhhhh, thaivisa. The home of a million cliches. Only invest what you can lose blah blah blah. All thai women are cheats blah blah blah. Everyone is out to cheat me blah blah blah.

Perhaps there are some farang who have been cheated out of land and house; well, if they're going to marry bargirl girlfriends, what do they expect?

However, for every one instance of that happening, there are hundred and hundreds of - shock horror - farangs leading perfectly ordinary lives, loving and trusting their wives, never losing anything.

  5. I've always had the same problem until Buckwheat came along and straightened me out. Sprinkle the spices you want on it - salt, pepper, garlic, etc.. Sprinkle some MSG (if tolerant to it) then rub it in. Take a fork (if you don't have a meat tenderizer mallet) and thoroughly poke it passing all the way through. Do the same with the other side. Place in plastic bag or wrap in plastic wrap and let it sit in the fridge over night. Take it out about 30 minutes before you want to cook it. I always charcoal grill mine, so the grill is very hot when it is put on it. Finally a steak that I can cut and chew easily.

Suspect Buckwheat will be around to correct my 'technique' and/or add his own. :o

Poking holes in the steak with a fork?

  6. A guarantee means almost nothing when dealing with the shameless.

You need to deal with people of high morals, integrity and ethics. Rare in Thailand.

You probably have heard this a thousand times. 'Don't bring money to Thailand unless you are prepared to walk away.'

There is a good reason for this overused comment.

People are willing to screw you over and not much can be done.

  7. An Army of taxi Cheats troll the Tourist areas. NOT INTERESTED IN TRANSPORTATION. ONLY lookng for victims to exploit.

You would think, a Taxi Company gets several complaints and the driver loses his job. Not in Thailand.

Complaints fall on deaf ears and the same criminal taxi drivers are out there, working over tourists, year after year.

Call the TAT and they tell you to call Tourist Police.

Call the Tourist Police and they tell you to go to a Police Station and file a report.

Call the Police say and they say "cannot do anything" unless "they catch him in the act".

NOBODY looks after the tourists, NOBODY.

  8. Saw a German Shepherd and a Black Lab with a couple pair of Soldiers. Each team had a BTS employee escort.

The other cars had a security team. I boarded 5 trains on the Sukhumvit line and saw extra security each time.

    Had me worried a bit.

Didn't see any on the Silom trains.

Expecting trouble from the Democracy group?

  9. Could it be the employees setting the fires?

I recall some time ago, the Sanyo Co. gave dissapointing New Year Bonuses. The workers burned the place down.

    Ah yes, using logic . . .

Reminds me of certain parts of certain cities in the US . . . 'Let's burn down our neighbourhoods. That will teach them!!!!'

...Then, after the holiday, they realized the factory was no longer there. Oooops.

  10. They say, many of these high end places are sold out. Not sure I believe them.

Don't be shy to make some low offers.

About 8 years ago, I went to several property auctions. Prices settled around 50,000bt /meter.

If I was buying, I would look for some of these places, with owners selling and make some low offers.

Newer building have higher costs due to increase in materials/land.

Construction costs are around 65,000bt/ meter these days.

  11. As I have been rendered deaf on one side for over 10 years now, I am hoping someone with 'normal' hearing might be able to answer this question reasonably.

On a relativly quiet night how far would one expect to hear the sound of a television?

I am in the country and my nearest neighbour is 100 metres or so away and there is a field of banana tree between us. Would you expect the sound of a standard tv to travel that far? I am not wanting to disturb my neighbours at all and any serious answers would be appreciated.

    Depends on the acoustics.

I suggest wiring a small speaker to the TV output and placing it closer to your ears.

  12. Last week, my wife and I need to make several phone calls from the airport to Canada. From our home phone, it's 3 baht a minute. We used the computer-touch screen phones on the departure floor and there were about the same price. However; the phones were a bit tempermental and we could only get through about ever 5-6 tries. So, we decided to go down a level and try the traditional TOT phones near the restaurants. The phones had instructions on the front on how to make international calls. We followed the instructions and to our surprise, we just found out that the 3 phones calls (10 min each) cost us 3500 baht each call! Just an FYI.

    That's outrageous but hardly suprising.

Just add that one to the list.

    Welcome to Thailand.

Why is it that some Farangs pop in here for a couple years and then go on as experts in everything Thai.
