  1. Yep every year at King's Birthday.

    HOG do a ride.

Greenie weenies are on their bicycles.

Yep I were. And I passed some nice chopped V-Twins on the way down from Doi Suthep as traffic was so heavy today. Oh... And I am sure I smelled a lot worse than any motor-head when I was done!

  2. Mr. Brad... By coincidence I was just thinking about my friends that are happy this morning over coffee. Great list. As I look at my friends that are doing well, almost all of them get some form of exercise like walking or biking. They also have some form of interest that they practice such as developing land, building a car, photography, travel, charity work, or searching out restaurants. All of them have a positive attitude.

  3. good pictures to compare the old and new....

Nice comparison pics! The new bike sure looks more substantial. Be interesting to find out if the old one can beat if off the line since it is lighter. Those are big meats on the new one! I can see why it feels more stable at speed.

  4. Nikster, Try disconnecting all of your USB devices (including any hugs you have installed) to see if you still have the problem. GPS devices, Internet Sticks and the like might cause the problems you are describing.

I give up! The TV Edit Function is giving me a 1 character wide window for edits! I meant "hubs" not "hugs." Keep your hugs connected but try disconnecting your hubs.

  5. I was sitting up Wat Doi Suthep last week and saw a Thai rider ride past with either a Single Speed or a Fixie. Looked like he was headed up to Doi Pui and yes, he was out of the saddle the whole time I saw him.

So what is the advantage of a Fixie (No Freewheel) over a Single Speed (with Freewheel)? Downhills on a Fixie must not be a whole lot of fun!

  6. If you want to check out another high end bike store besides ProBike, check out the Cannondale shop.  Here's the address:

    Thaicannasia/Star bikes

    73/1 Sukhumvit Soi 3

    North Nana, Klong Toey

    Bangkok Thailand 10110

    Fax: 662-253-3464

I've always been impressed by this place, but Cannondale's have always had some weirdness (like funky headsets) that turned me off to them.   Their current models might be better.  The shop is definitely one to check out.

The Thaicannasia shop moved from that location over 2 years ago. It's off Rama IV behind the Carrefour. I think it's like Sukhumvit soi 26 or something like that. Google it.

Thanks for that update on the location. It's been a while since I've been down there.

  8. Tonto21: Do you have any GPS routes or descriptions of trail rides up in Mae Taeng? I spend a lot of time up there, do some rides up past the elephant camps on the Mae Taeng river, but am looking for more scoop.

I agree with your comments on disk brakes. I would never get a MTB without them. My Hope 4 puck cc's have over a million vertical feet on them and have never had any service except pad changes and one disk change. Still can lock up the wheels with a single finger on the steepest slope.

Sendbaht: Be careful down there or you'll be buying another bike!

  9. pillion-rider-got-back.jpg

I Pillion mine like this. I find it helps us cut through the traffic quicker. Plus it's always good for a reversing signal.

Wow, that's one super powerful exhaust!! ohmy.gif

I've heard a racing term called "ass tuck" used to describe how a bike rear end sinks as you accelerate out of a turn but never really had quite that image in my mind!

  10. Finally, a thread on the Chiang Mai forum where all the folks who grew up with Monty Python, and have the same quirky and surreal sense of humour....can express themselves fully.

    So happy to see this.

A lot cheaper than Prozac and/or terminal depression.

Don't worry chaps, just happy to know that your recovery is progressing well.

    :)

Yep! Plus, this is about the very first thread on Thai Visa that has stayed on topic.

  11. White Cad, I was out at Cherry Bike on HWY118

I'm having no success finding Cherry Bike... would you put up a few directions please? Many thanks...

You bet. Leaving CM on HWY 118 after you cross the river, go straight at the Super HWY intersection. It is not far from this intersection, and before the next traffic light. As you see the next traffic light coming up, look for a huge DUNLOP TIRE sign, yellow and black I think, above a tire store. Cherry Bike is just beyond this a door or two. Not well marked so you will have to look for bikes in the storefront.

  12. I found that most Shark helmets available in Thailand you can now buy super cheap on websites like www.bikebandit.com, prices start at 70 US$ (delivery charges are not that high also).

What about duty on those rascals? I need a new helmet and am hoping to spend less than 7000 baht. Last time I checked, the Sharks were about 15,000 baht or more.

  13. White Cad, I was out at Cherry Bike on HWY118 getting a wheel re-strung today and noticed that they have a large collection of bikes at the moment. You might try there. I was also pleasantly surprised to see an old mountain biking buddy working there as a mechanic. Their shop is one of the neater ones in the area, and that is one thing that has steered me away from Chaitawat after they lost a free wheel spring from my HOPE hub. The mechanic there is forced to work outside.

  14. Hi T-Dog,

First of all, thank you for contributing to our thread.

please see the posts below which I'm sure will answer your question regarding pillions and our eating habits.

    Keep on the back seat....

    Pillion

    Dear Mr Pillion,

My missus is normally the pillion when I'm riding and she constantly finds a way to fall asleep when I riding along the road. All of a sudden there is a extra weight on my back and I just know its the missus. She also enjoys trying to feed me all sorts of wonders as I'm tanking along at 90k's an hour. Both these problems can potential cause an accident and I was wondering what your thoughts are on the matter. Is there any skills she could possibly learn to help her sleep and eat while riding pillion.

    Hi Slinky,

Thanks for your serious question, I'm happy to see your girlfriend is a dedicated pillion. Please tell her about the club.

In regards to your question, this can be a very tricky situation, I'm honestly quite surprised your girlfriend can fall asleep riding pillion, I never feel more awake when I'm sitting legs apart behind a man. When I've been on longer journeys with my driver it has been necessary to feed them. I find food that you have to spoon, rice for example, can be a little messy and the driver could end up with a messy crotch, I've had to clean a few of those. The food I would recommend would be something such as a sandwich, or a hotdog, if you can get the coordination it's harmonious.

I've also practiced this skill on stationary bikes.

I hope this has helped your problem.

    Pillion

I missed that post! My perfect pillion passenger can also sleep and eat a full meal at 90 plus. We usually select the safe satays on a stick for my satiation as a spoonful of soup could surely sail! I don't like her sleeping though as I don't want to lose her.

  15. It seems there a lot of web resources for cycling in Northern Thailand. Many of them are commercial but still offer some good info. I thought it would be good to collect them all in one thread to share the wealth.

    Here are a couple:

    http://www.cyclechiangmai.com/

Has phone numbers for shops, and an RSS Feed where you can get automatic updates on races, rides, events, etc. Seems to kept up-to-date in good fashion.

    www.cmcycling.org

Website for the Sunday Cycling Group that meets at Tapae Gate every Sunday morning at 7:30 AM. A great way to break into cycling in Chiang Mai if you are new to the area or new to cycling in Thailand. (Normally this site has a schedule of rides but I see that it is not currently working.)
