  1. I discovered today that there's a second place that does great burgers (besides Duke's on Chiang Mai-Lumphin road) and that's Duke's at the Night Bazaar. Seriously, I've eaten Joe's Famous burger three times this week, and see no reason to try anything/anywhere else.

    It's that good ... I'm just sayin'.

  2. One question. Is your friend a visitor to Thailand? Or, has he/she been here for a while with a craving for farang food?

Otherwise, you are clearly on the wrong mailing list! To wit, a review posted last week:

He is a tourist, yes. It is I who have been here for a while with a craving for farang food.

The review you posted talked a lot about the mechanics, not a lot about the food. Susan was not present tonight - just an English guy I presumed to be John and a waitress.

  3. Google Maps Link

I went to the Elizabethan Room tonight, while I have a friend visiting Chiang Mai and have the excuse to go out. Personally I would've preferred to go to Duke's again, but my friend was certain there were other restaurants in Chiang Mai.

It's a bit difficult to find, so I've attached a Google maps link above.

My friend had the Roast Pork:

The food was good, if not exceptional - it's just simple food, well prepared. My friend's pork was very gamey, and flavourful. The gravy was beautiful. Peas were minted, and the carrots I think were prepared with pickled ginger and honey. Shepherd's pie was ok.

  4. I'm sure a normal table would be fine, and I'm sure many people were changed on a normal table, but frankly I can see the benifit in a table that's 37-40" high rather than one that's 27-30" high for constant changing/bathing/etc.

Does anyone have any advice where perhaps a specific baby item like this can be bought? Robinsons at Central Airport doesn't have any, neither does Central at Kad Suan Kaew. I'm pretty sure I could find this at home, but I need help finding even the most obvious things here. :/

    Any help?

  5. I mounted a small shelf box on the wall which modem , wifi router , switch , NAS , USB drive and power board sit - I cut a hole in the top and placed a 120mm computer fan sucking out to help cooling.

Behold the Dodgy Brothers Inc "el cheapo" equipment rack - but it works :o

wow, with 24/7 monitoring via webcams (two!)!

  6. Whew. I have another review of Euro Gourmet to bloatedly whip out. I can only bear to read these forums when full to the brim or else I get too hungry to concentrate.

I have only the time (and permission) to eat out at raahn-aa'hahn falang once per week. Lately I've had no inclination to go anywhere besides the Euro Gourmet bistro. And since I'm making up for a whole week, I usually skip breakfast and try to cram two meals in a row at the bistro, thus thwarting the wife's attempts at controlling my waistline.

So this morning I rocked up and had the mexican breakfast with a kasekreiner, and several beers later, took John up on his suggestion that he could now provide a bluecheeseburger with the gorgonzola that formed the basis for his gnocchi sauce and cordon bleu in recent specials. (I had previously requested a bluecheeseburger on this very forum).

The mexican breakfast was a tortilla, scrambled egg, chorizo sausage and cheese amalgamation, which was very tasty, and aroma while I waited was good enough to make me even hungrier. When eaten with the kasekreiner (which it doens't normally come with, this was an addition of my own invention) the meal is definitely not for the diet conscious, as I could feel my arteries clogging as I scoffed. The salsa accompaniment was delicious and tasted of guacamole and coriander.

The bluecheeseburger was a work of art. The gorgonzola topped the beef like a rich sauce. The beef on John's burgers is pretty impressive - I think only venison matches it for concentration of flavour per gram. 200 grams (I think it is) on these burgers feels like much more. As I've said before, the chips at the Bistro are actually good (I normally don't bother with chips) and go really well with the coleslaw.

On the whole, a fantastic morning-afternoon. I will surely miss the bistro when I move to CM later this year.

  7. HI all,

this Saturdays special (pre bookings please) 23/08/2008

French Potato & Garlic Soup - creamy and highly delicious

Cordon Bleu with Gorgonzola Cheese filling served with delicate Potato Cakes and Vegetables

    John

I'll be in on the weekend, but I'll skip the special because I'm craving a burger! (or 2 ... )

  8. I was in yesterday for the goulash/gnocchi (again) and this time I also tried the Reuben beef burger. My god it was good. My wife generally has a rule that I can only eat out at farang restaurants once a week, so yesterday I starved myself throughout the day so I could eat a massive meal when I got to the bistro, and thus defeat her attempts at getting me to look after myself.

  9. Many thanks for the wisdom shared so far.

if the mother has no passport, then it is a safe assumption that the mother is Thai.

Any child born to at least one Thai parent is automatically a Thai citizen. The Thai birth certificate which your child will get will reflect this, and the child will not need any visas to live in Thailand. IF your child needs to leave Thailand, you should get a Thai passport for the child to depart and return to Thailand on.

Here are some purely hypothetical questions:

What if the mother is from "upcountry" without a formal Thai ID card?

Do you need to show ID at the hospital? Presumably, yes. If so, what happens if the ID the mother shows at the hospital is that of a family member with similar features? :s

Would that mean the birth certifcate would have a different name for the mother? Won't that make getting the Australian passport/citizenship more difficult?

  10. My partner and I are having a baby in Chiang Mai at the end of September.

I am Australian, over here on a Non-Imm B visa. When the baby is born, we want to register him as an Australian citizen by descent. So we'll fill in the paperwork and submit it to the Australian embassy as specified here. One of potential problems is that it specifies on that page:

If one of the parents is NOT an Australian citizen they must provide certified true copy of whole passport including movement stamps for the period including 12 months prior to the birth of the child

My (Thai) partner doesn't have a passport, so I'm not sure what can be done about that, but I'm sure the embassy will advise.

Is it just me, or will the baby be staying illegally without a visa? Or is there an age limit or something that you need a visa beyond?

Can anyone else think of any "gotchas" that we need to take into consideration with this process? I've read through the form and it all looks pretty self-explanatory.

  11. John, any chance of adding a blue cheeseburger to the menu? at the moment to get that i have to go allllll the way to OMC at Khao Sahn. Also - do you have wifi in the bistro?

I went over to Oh My Cod and tried the bluecheesburger today after reading ur post...Wow, is that darn good or what? And its not microed - asked the staff who said freshly grilled...will go back there even thoug not in area, worth the trek over town

Cool! Yeah it's awesome. I just love the blue cheese flavour and on a burger, it's perfect! Shame about the traffic or I'd go more regularly just for this!
