If you ever decided to put a Rueben Sandwich on the menu I would certainly eat it.
Hi,
would love to do a Reuben sandwich, but the problem is the Bread since the traditional Reuben asks for Rye Bread. I can see myself throwing expensive Rye away every day. I figured that the "Reuben Burger" will be ordered more often and is a good compromise,
John
John, any chance of adding a blue cheeseburger to the menu? at the moment to get that i have to go allllll the way to OMC at Khao Sahn. Also - do you have wifi in the bistro?

My imported supply of "Australia's Favourite Cordial" (as voted by the label on the front of the bottle) has recently depleted.
Anyone seen it anywhere in LOS? I would probably go anywhere within the kingdom to get it if its in sufficient quantity to make the trip worthwhile.
Obviously has it so I could order online when I finally get desperate, but I'm not quite there yet.

The new recording of the Royal Anthem before the movie at Emporium has changed, and is now a beautiful jazz-style interpretation of a woman singing over a montage of videos of HM throughout his life.
Does anyone have any info on who did this recording, or where I can get it? Even better would be a video of the same clip SFX uses, but I've already searched Youtube (in english only) for no good results.

I would hope a supplier of gourmet food items would have a better burger than McDonalds, however I have seen an awful lot of places that grind there own "high-quality" beef daily, use real cheese and make their own french fries who don't. Both Chiang Mai and Bangkok are full of them.
I haven't been to Bangkok for a while, but Tony Romas had pretty good 300 baht burger and The Big Mango had a pretty good, reasonably priced burger, but I've heard that they are out of business. Bully Pub had a pretty good one.
I will try JohnBBK's place next time I visit Bangkok, but I'm afraid that trying his burger won't be at the top of my list compared to other things that he has mentioned.
Big Mango is open again, new location and now a freelancer bar, and I'm not 100% sure if the kitchen is open yet, but they're on the comeback trail.

I have a tradition. Every time I remember, I get pretty drunk watching State of Origin.
Last night I headed to the Crossbar (which I’ve only been to once before) and had a pretty good night. Of course, with east coast Australia 3 hours ahead, this means I had to get there around 4:30pm to see the pregame, which was a little dead, but the crowd built up, and it just gave me more time to warm up myself.
The pub owner’s an English chap, whose name I forget in the murky haze of morning, but a pleasant fellow with a pleasant bar. I had their well-above-average cheeseburger (I seem to recall reading about that here before) which comes with EXCELLENT chips, and more large (pint?) glasses of Leo beer than I care to remember. The apple crumble with custard was also excellent.
They also have HP sauce in a squeeze bottle. I've not seen that before in LOS.
I have no financial or other interest in the bar, just had a good night and wanted to share. It's on a subsoi between Asoke and Sukumvit Soi 23.

Does anyone know where the Australian NRL "State of Origin" game is being played tonight?
I'd hazard a guess at any of the Downunder bars ... anyone know anywhere else?

Are you insinuating that one of us KNOWS the place where better than average Street Vendors go to & that there may be some kind of Mecca that they all go ???
Hmm
I think I am ... now ...
-
My favourite street vendor has deserted his post and has not been seen for days. This is a truly sad state of affairs: where now must I get my morning waffle?
It's not the first time I've been deserted either.
Seriously, where do you think they go? My wife says he's gone to sell at another market, I think there might be a conspiracy. Why do the less-than-excellent ones stay, and the good ones go?
-
Alright great, thanks all. I think I'll rent. :-)
-
It will vary.
Usually 50-70%
Thanks HowardJohnson, I was unclear - I meant the %age interest rate on the financed amount.
-
Hi all,
Never before owned property in LOS, but one has caught my eye with this attractive catch-phrase:
Owner is willing to finance.
What %age do you imagine this to mean? I know from previous dealings that private finance here is much more expensive than in Australia (where I have some experience buying and selling property).
-
just to put the topic to bed, in the end I ponied it up as a loan and the firm emphasis that it was a one-time deal and I wouldn't do it again. I guess I'll see if I get it back!
Thanks for all replies.

very long post
I'm sorry to read this, and of course can identify with parts. Good luck.

5. They always spend all money on hand as a matter of principle and have no concept of saving for a rainy day.
8. They required capital to purchase or develop a non-depreciating asset and Thailand's undeveloped system of finance offers them no loan options other than loan sharks.
I think it's these two. My father-in-law is dead, mother-in-law is genuinely a salt-of-the-earth person who I genuinely like. No alchohol, no smoking, no gambling ... not even red meat. She had saved and borrowed from family (without interest) some money, and along with the sin sot I paid her when I married my wife, had enough to build a house. Unfortunately costs escalated somewhat, and plans expanded when it became clear that future plans would be cheaper now (while the builders are here and already working), than it would be in future.
I will look into the whole "legally binding loan" arrangement, but I think it might be seen as more mai mii naam jai than pretending not to have the money in the first place ...

Apologies, I had tried to make this a poll with multi choice answers, but the poll didn't appear.
30K, 1 bedroom, 1 bath, kitchen, lounge.
-
What sort of sum are we talking about? What was the money for? Did they come to you first?
B120K. Kind-of, yes, but I said I didn't have the money. They're building a house, this is what they needed to get the job finished.

There's enough horror stories out there for alarm bells to immediately start ringing as soon I heard, and so far I've offered to do nothing. Still, it sucks when you hear that 5% a month is being paid in interest.
On the one hand I've got my own problems, but I can't see how they can ever get out of that kinda spiral.
Talk some sense into me, quick!

Mainly I have issue with touritst more than expats.
the biggest issue i have with tourists is when they don't realize songkran games finish when the sun goes down. nothing pleasant about being wet at night.

China Airlines isn't in Star Alliance. Maybe they have a codeshare allowing you to qualify for Thai ff miles, but not for long as they are lined up to join Sky Team.
Thanks for that, you're quite right. Air China is, but China Airlines isn't.
I think I'll go Eva.
-
Ok, seems Eva goes via Taipei.
Hmm, I see on Seatguru that the 777 aircraft configuration used on EVA between Taipei and LAX has the new-style "flat" business class seats.
China Air uses 747-400's between Taipei and LAX.
I can earn Thai miles on China Air though, as it's on the Star Alliance network.
Hmm, that's a dilly of a pickle.
-
All business class cabins are not made equal, does anyone have any first-hand experience with either of these? I believe Eva Air is generally liked ... for BKK-LAX-BKK, is it worth another 9K baht?
Roundtrip airfare Bangkok - LA - Bangkok business class
China Air (CI) via Taipei - THB 81,500 nett including taxes.
vs
Roundtrip airfare Bangkok - Los Angeles - Bangkok business class
Eva Air (BR) Thai Baht 90,500 nett including taxes.
I just noticed that the Eva Air flight looks to be direct ... that's gotta be worth something I guess.

they definitely at villa suk soi 11, they even have the heart shaped ones too

So I confronted her to get the low-down on where she got it, and she doesn't really know.
I asked her if she was saying "dead" a la pasa angkrit, or "det" a la pasa thai. She assures me she's saying "dead" a la pasa angkrit, but doesn't know why.
So that was obviously enlightening.

Never heard of this place before....but they have a fairly extensive menu of food and drinks...
Menu shows hamburger and chips for 140 baht, and cheeseburger and chips for 160b
From the photo posted, it looked like a pretty good offering....
I have to stop reading this forum ... it's playing havoc with my diet. I just read this thread and had to go out and try it.
It's a nice pub, with good food. Drinks are a little exy imo. The burger was good, the chips (note that they were fat english-style chips, not fries) were excellent.

Just reporting in that I ate at Euro Bistro the other day. I had the goulash/gnocchi which was awesome, the curry sausages and chips, which were very good (but I could've used more sauce! the chips were tasty on their own though, which is unusual - I usually find chips very bland and boring) and the apple pie which was good, but not to my taste. John, you need to get icecream to go with that pie man!
Great meal, look forward to making it out again before I bid bangkok farewell.
