  1. I really doubt it was the noodle soup. Food poisoning generally takes 24 to 48hrs (or more) before you start to see and feel the effects. Most relate the food poisoning with the last thing that they ate since this is usually the first thing that comes back up. I would suggest thinking back from the time you got sick until approximately three days before what you had to eat. I would be willing to bet that it was something you ate then rather than the noodle soup.

Timing depends on the type of food poisoning and the type bacteria involved. Generally Shellfish food poisoning usually takes somewhere around 3 hours to manifest itself. Again, generally food poisoning is unlikely to take as long as 24 hours and is more likely between 4 to 8 hours.

  2. Hey there! :-)

How do the street food vendors all along Sukhumvit decide who gets what location? Is rent paid....and if so, to whom......and how much is the rent?

    I searched....but didn't see anything recent about this....and I'm a weeeeeeeeee bit curious.

    CHEERS!

What I'd like to know is how more farangs don't get food poisoning. Many's the time after a big session I've stopped for a couple of chicken legs and sausages on a stick. This food has been sitting out in the sun all day (same as the fish and prawns) and yet I've never been sick. I know throwing it over the coals for another 5 minutes or so is going to kill off some bacteria but it must be still a bit of a gamble.

Many people do get sick including Thai's, however usually from not making sure that the food is cooked all the way through or they are simply not use to the bacteria. I had some squid from a street stall once and I ended up in hospital and lost 5 kilo in 1 week.

  3. Truck drivers on strike nationwide

Truck drivers went on strike on Tuesday to back demands that the government help solve the rising cost of fuel. Strike leaders claimed that more than 700,000 trucks parked on Tuesday at 5am along main streets of the main towns. They threatened to drive trucks into midtown Bangkok next Tuesday if "the problem" is not solved. Prices of all main fuel types passed 40 baht per litre on Tuesday as

Interesting, there were actually somewhere around 500 to 600 trucks taking part but in a number of different locations, not very close to the 700,000 reported.

  4. Hi guys

Just a small word of warning about this service.

As few weeks ago I purchased a number of things, including 1KG chicken sausages, pies, meat, gravies, sausage rolls ect. When the parcel arrived, there were no sausage rolls, 1 small packet of chicken sausages (6 thin sausages only) not even close to 1 KG and the pies were squashed. All else was fine and yes I was invoiced and had paid for the lot up front.

Seeing this, I E-mail my concerns to the on line supermarket. This was a couple of weeks ago and still no response.

  5. As an Aussie, my two favorite places would have to be Thailand and PI (Philippines). I've been most places in Asia and while I like a lot of different countries, if I was living here in Thailand it would have to be PI. Cheap, great looking girls, better English skills than Thai's and many, many great beaches.

  7. San Miguel light or beer Loa for me, however I would love to get my hands on some good Aussie beer!

    Craig :o:D

That is one of the biggest contradiction in terms I've ever seen. I've lost count of the number of arguments I've had with Ozzie's who think they make "beer". They don't. One chap even told me couldn't ever live abroad as nowhere serves VB. That's VB!

Interesting insight, from someone who oboviously knows Australia and Aussies (not). Just for your reference and education Super Han, taste is an individual thing and yes Australia does make good beers, I'm guessing you just have not tried any. However I certainly do not rate VB as good!

  8. The USA is many times larger than Thailand and has a population about 4 or 5 times as large.

The problem is that nowhere in the world is any country gaining more land but they are mostly gaining in population so all land world wide will become more expensive.

You can move land around but you cannot physically grow any more.

The advantage of land is that if you own it, it is an asset which can be used or rented if you have no current use for it. With some good luck and no debts behind you it is also possible to grow food to supplement your income or even be your income.

Land prices in Bangkok for example are absolutely horrendous and mostl all you can do with it is share it with other people in a condo which costs a lot to run.

While most of what you have said is quite correct, you should go and have a look at Singapore and Hong Kong. Both have increased their land masses significantly over the last 20 years. You can actually reclaim land from the sea.

  9. What car are you looking for?

I know of quite a few for sale...

    Hi Muff

It's not actually for me, it's for a friend of mine that has always wanted a classic car. He lives in Bangkok and he has decided the time is right to start looking. He is English and has mentioned that maybe a Jaguar or Mercedes would suit, however it's more likely that when he sees the right car he will know.

  10. I suggest a Callan Method school. Try Silom, Lad Prao, LA Experience near Phloen Chit, or the one near Asok BTS.

This school uses the direct method which focuses on speaking more than anything else. It's intensive and effective for the majority of students, but they have to stick with it after first going through an uncomfortable learning curve. Teachers are very helpful, however.

People who give credibility to the heavily criticized direct (if that is the same as "natural") method can have it for 2400B per 3 months 30 hours a week at AUA Rajadamri.

I have seen Thais in coming in groups for a class there, in different uniforms - nurses, insurance company clerks, banking staff...must be worthwhile in someone's eyes.

A lady who was learning Thai there told me it took her 200 hours (in a class) to start talking and then was better.

My wife went to AUA and did (they tested her and gave her a credit for first 2) courses 4-6 but then it became too hard (required Western Uni education to follow what is being talked about - Michelangelo's sculptures, green house effect, building of the Segrada Familia in Barcelona...). Then she went to ECC where simpler things and closer to the earth were discussed.

    Thanks guys for both replies.

  11. Hi, I've posted this on another forum and I've had no replies, so I thought I'd ask for your advice.

I'm relatively new to Bangkok and surprise, surprise I have a Thai girl friend.

She lives up country in Mukdahan and I intend to bring her down here in the next few weeks.

The issue I have is that, while she can speak some English, it's not all that good.

She is learning English in Mukdahan but the way they teach it is incorrect, in my opinion. They spend more

time trying to teach them nouns, adverbs etc rather than the basics of conversation and day to speech.

My question for the forum is, does anyone know of a good English tutor or teacher they could recommend?

    Thanks

  12. I'm told that westerns now can't get a loan from a Thai bank, well in Baht anyway.

    Is this the case?

I'm also told that the Bangkok bank might be able to arrange a loan, but via Singapore and in Singapore dollars.

    Has anyone had this experience?

    Craig

  13. Thanks guys, some good information.

After I been there I will post a report on the hotel and Mukdahan itself.

I must say I'm looking forward to getting up there I've never been up north into Issan.

What type of beers do they have up there?

I quite like Loas beer, is that available ?

    Craig

    Hi Craig,

if I can bia Hieneken in a tiny little village in the middle of nowhere you will sure be able to get it there for bht45 or 50 - big bottle.

If you get over to Laos or can get it in Mukdahan, there is a dark bia Lao that is very good.

I tried it over the border at Chong Mek.

Cheap to, only cost Lao kip 9000 per bia.

We got Lao kip 185000 for US20.

    Thanks Vegimite

The Hienies would not be my first choice but the dark beer sounds good. Not knowing Mukdahan at all it will be an experience. Nothing like having a cold beer on a warm evening.

  15. My personal recommendation:

    Residence for Rent

Although perhaps only because I'm so happy with the place they found me (and also perhaps because the two girls I dealt with were both cute as hel_l).

Thanks for that, by the way "cute" is not bad! In fact it's good.

  16. Hi

I'm moving to Bangkok at the end of the month and I'm looking at renting an apartment somewhere along Sukumhvit. Does anyone know of a reliable real estate agent. I've been in contact (E-mail) with one or two and I'm getting the feeling they are only interested in showing me properties in the high price bracket.

  17. I've posted this in the Issan forum, I'm not certain maybe I should have posted here.

    Hi guys

My name is Craig and I'm a Newbie to this forum.

I'm travel to Mukdahan in a weeks time to see a friend.

I have a couple of questions, maybe someone can help?

I have an international drivers licence, can you rent a car in Mukdahan?

What are Taxi's like there, easy to get, cost, etc.

Where can a fella get a good beer in Mukdahan, are there any places someone would recommend?

Are there any reasonable places to eat, would someone be able to recommend a place?

I'm staying at the Ploy Palace, I believe this is OK.

If there is anyone interested in having a beer and a chat, please let me know I would be happy to hear about local experiences.

    Craig :o
