  10. ‘I really like this format and hope that we can do it again some time. It gives us the freedom to choose an activity that really interests us’. – Charlotte Year 11. Over 100 BISP Year 10 and 11 Upper School students participated in a ’Time to Engage’ activity during their weekly wellbeing session. The objective of the session was to encourage student agency in engaging in a new activity to kick-off 2022. Student agency refers to learning through activities that are meaningful and relevant to learners, driven by their interests, and often self-initiated with appropriate guidance from teachers. To put it simply, student agency gives students voice and choice, in how and what they learn. ‘I chose Podcasting as I like to listen to different inspiring podcasts, and it has given me the skills and knowledge to make my own in the future’. – Aidan Year 10 As part of our Wellbeing program, BISP encourages and provides opportunities for students to step out of their comfort zones and to engage in new pursuits. Studies have shown that giving students choice in the learning process can lead to an increase in focus and attention, motivating them to practice higher-level critical thinking skills and enhancing meaningful learning opportunities. ‘‘Time to Engage’ gave us the opportunity to socialise with friends, make new friends and have fun while learning a new skill.’ – Miyuka Year 10 The ’Time to Engage’ activities were hosted by a team of enthusiastic and passionate BISP teaching staff and were run in various locations around school. Students had the opportunity to engage in a diverse range of activities, from Chess to Muay Thai, Baking to Yoga and Art. It has been a pleasure to see our Upper School students becoming fully immersed in the broad range of activities on offer. ‘Time to Engage’ has been focused on giving responsibility and ownership of learning to our students, guiding them in the direction of potential new passions and new connections with their peers. Our efforts to nurture wellbeing by encouraging student agency and interactive learning in this way is underpinned by the three pillars of our Wellbeing curriculum – Engage, Relate & Shine. – Mrs Clark
  11. BISP was fortunate to host InClay Studio potter Jirawong Wongantran from the 7th to the 11th February 2022. Jirawong Wongantran is Chiang Mai based artist who hosted a week-long specialist workshop with Year 10, Year 12 and Year 13 IGCSE and IB art students. For the first two days, students experimented with throwing pots of all shapes and sizes. They then used their best pieces to develop their work, in a hand-build method, to include different decorative elements related to their coursework. Students were shown how to throw a pot and also hand-build. In order to maximise the experience, each student came to the workshop with an idea and sketch of what they planned to make through the workshop. Guided by their teacher, and interactions with the visiting potter, students had the opportunity to take their ideas and to make work that was personal to them about subjects they feel passionate about. Once their pieces were made, students were taught the process of dip glazing and also brush on glaze to add colour to their work. Each of these pieces will be used as one of the exhibition artworks at IB and at IGCSE where it will be integrated into each student’s body of coursework. You can learn more about the visiting potter Jirawong Wongantran: https://www.inclaystudio.com/

  13. The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is a global programme offered at BISP that aims to equip young people for life. There are four required components of this award: voluntary service, skill, physical recreation and the adventurous journey. Below is a student reflection written by BISP Year 10 student, Miyuka on her experience towards attaining the DoE International Award. Frankly, in the beginning, I contemplated whether or not to sign up. However, reflecting back on the three adventurous weekends, I am truly glad I did. Participating in this programme created long-lasting memories and made me closer to my friends over time. On the first training weekend, all of us were overwhelmed with mixed feelings about everything. We soon realised how much food we overpacked and how we needed way more shirts. Some of us, including myself, were still trying to paddle correctly whilst others were struggling to light a match. The second time we went everything went much smoother and we were all equipped in a much better manner. We were all getting the hang of paddling, cooking and setting up tents. The best part was the campfire at night where we all ate smores under the twinkling stars. On the qualifying journey, the last trip, we went to an unfamiliar environment. To meet one of the requirements, we had to kayak to a completely different island to spend the night. Lily and I along with Katy, the instructor had to create an adapted route due to the unpredicted circumstances. Fortunately, by then we both had some skills and knowledge and therefore we were able to overcome this obstacle. We all had to paddle harder against the powerful waves and despite trying, some of my teammates ended up capsizing. After arriving on the island, completely exhausted, we were gifted by a mesmerising, golden sunset and a twinkling ocean. At this moment, I felt completely immersed in the environment. As the winds took a while to subside, we were not able to complete our last paddle the next day, however, we got the chance to spend quality time at the beach and complete our individual purpose. For me, this meant taking water samples and observing the environment and human activity. I was inspired to dedicate my purpose to researching marine life and water quality across the different islands when I encountered a young Green sea turtle that unfortunately died, most likely due to plastic ingestion on the first journey. As I have always been inquisitive about the effect of human activity on the environment, I decided to use the opportunity to investigate the area. My friends on the other hand wrote poems, created drawings and made flipbooks. I think the exemplary thing about the International Award is how unique and different the experience is to every individual and how it brings everyone closer together. Personally, the journeys created extraordinary memories and taught me various skills. I feel incredibly privileged that I was able to complete my adventure with the most phenomenal group and I think anyone could benefit from this experience. For more information about the International Award at BISP please contact [email protected]

  15. Thailand used to attract scores of digital nomads, working professionals, and expat families each year prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and, as the country gradually opens up, many more are expected to flock here for the opportunities there’ll be once the dust settles. While Thai is the official language of the country (meaning that English-speaking jobs may be hard to come by) and there are restrictions on the types of work that foreigners can legally do, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to know that there are quite a few options, which our friends at Pacific Prime Thailand will share in this article. 1. Teacher/Tutor at tuition centers, cultural organizations, and schools If you randomly spot an expat in Thailand, chances are they are a teacher. Teaching (and tutoring) is one of the most common jobs for expats in Thailand as many schools and tuition centers are willing and able to hire foreigners. But, of course, not all teaching jobs in the country were created equally. Here are some of the types of teaching jobs available to expats in Thailand: ● Teacher of English as a Second Language (ESL): These jobs typically require applicants to be a native English speaker and have a TEFL or TESOL qualification. Opportunities are available at tuition centers, cultural organizations (i.e. British Council), and Thai schools. ● Teacher of any other foreign language (i.e. Mandarin, French, Spanish, etc.): These jobs typically require applicants to be fluent in their native language and have a teaching qualification. Opportunities are available at tuition centers and cultural organizations (i.e. Alliance Française, Goethe Institute, etc.). ● Teacher at an international or Thai school with an English/bilingual program: These jobs typically require applicants to be a fully qualified teacher and are available for a wide range of subjects including English, Maths, Science, History, IT, French, etc. Opportunities are available at schools of various international curriculums. 2. Employee at multinational companies/English-speaking start ups At most multinational companies in Thailand, the main language of communication is English. The easiest way to get a job in these companies is to work for the company in your home country first, and look for relocation opportunities to Thailand. This is usually available to more senior positions, but it may be worth the wait as it tends to come with an excellent remuneration and relocation package including flights, accommodation, company car, etc. Alternatively, you can also apply directly at the company’s Thailand office or to an English-speaking start-up in the country (of which there are loads). The key is to recognize and play to your strengths. Why should the company hire you over a Thai national? Do you have any particular language skills, specialist or technical skills like coding, or knowledge for a particular market that will help you stand out? Hospitality industry While the relatively new Tech industry (think data science, AI, etc.) in Thailand hires many expats, traditional industries that have long hired this demographic include the hospitality industry. After all, Thailand is a tourism-based economy with many luxury hotel chains, restaurants, and tourism-related businesses. Whether it’s a manager of a hotel, chef at a restaurant, or tour operator catering to a certain country, there are many opportunities for you. 3. Entrepreneur/digital nomad at Thai-based or foreign-based, online businesses Do you have the entrepreneurial spirit? Spot a gap in the market? If so, you can start your own business. Starting a Thai-based business is one option, but will require you to register the company locally, hire an account to file company taxes, etc. As your business grows, you may also hire employees. Another option (which is growing increasingly popular since the pandemic accelerated ecommerce) is to operate a foreign-based, online business from Thailand. On a similar note, you can also look into becoming a freelancer or digital nomad. Again, the pandemic has increased the number of remote working opportunities available. Those with specific skill sets like graphic designers, content writers, and web developers will find remote jobs easier than others. There are also many coworking spaces available in Bangkok and beyond, as well as meet up groups for you to mingle with other digital nomads. Whether you’d like to secure health insurance as an individual or top up the plan provided by your employer, you’re more than welcome to get in touch with Pacific Prime Thailand. They provide the best expat health insurance in Thailand and have plenty of options when it comes to health insurance for digital nomads. 19. Thailand has recently approved the de facto decriminalization of cannabis and has become the first country in Asia to take such a liberal stance. But before you begin growing or smoking pot for recreational purposes, you should know that the Thai authorities have left a gray area around this. So to ensure you stay within the realms of the law, our friends at Pacific Prime Thailand will shed light on everything you need to know. What is the legal status of cannabis? It’s a misconception to view cannabis (a plant species to which both marijuana and hemp belong) as fully legal. All that’s happened is that public health minister Anutin Charnvirakul signed a ministerial announcement in February 2022 officially removing the drug from Category 5 of the country’s list of narcotics, which will be effective 120 days after its publication in the Royal Gazette. Tetrahydrocannabinol While cannabis will be allowed for medicinal uses, recreational uses are an entirely different matter. As such, cannabis that contains more than 0.2% by weight of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) will remain banned given that THC is the psychoactive ingredient that gives users a high and is associated with recreational use. Who has been the driving force behind cannabis decriminalization? It’s no surprise that Anutin has been the driving force in the decriminalization of marijuana. As leader of the Bhumjai Thai Party, a major partner in the coalition government, he campaigned in the 2019 general election for the legalization of marijuana production to help farmers. His most recent move is also seen as helping promote cannabis products (in the areas of medical and healthcare benefits) as a major industry in Thailand. Are you allowed to produce/possess cannabis? The production and possession of the drug remains heavily regulated. According to Anutin, Thais will be able to grow cannabis legally for medical purposes but this must be done by a minimum of seven people in the form of community enterprise and must have permission from the relevant authority. When it comes to use, the regulations surrounding the extracts of cannabis will ensure that they are used for medical, research, or industrial purposes only. Jail term for production/possession of cannabis A word of warning: If your production and/or possession of cannabis doesn’t fall under the aforementioned categories, this is considered a criminal offense and you can still be jailed. How about the “Cannabis Sandbox” being proposed? Yes, you read that right. The government is proposing a “cannabis sandbox” entry scheme to bring in marijuana enthusiasts from overseas. Travelers will be able to roam freely in approved areas without undergoing quarantine and cannabis products will be involved. That being said, it’s likely that the government means cannabis products with very low traces of THC. In any case, a public hearing on this scheme will be held in February 2022. Unlocking the health benefits of cannabis Cannabis has a long history of use in Thailand and was a part of traditional Thai life for hundreds of years. Up until it was criminalized, cannabis was used medicinally to treat conditions such as migraine headaches, cholera, malaria, digestion problems, and post-childbirth pain. Today, many people are turning to cannabis once again for its medicinal purposes. For example, the Cancer Alliance Hospital Siracha in Chon Buri Province established a medical marijuana department to improve cancer treatment. To learn more about Thailand’s healthcare and health-related regulations or for help securing private health insurance (so that you can access the best medical services without paying out of pocket), you're more than welcome to contact Pacific Prime Thailand today!
  20. It’s a question that many people ask themselves especially as the years creep by and we are more aware of our mortality. When is the right time to buy life insurance? This blog will help to answer some of the burning questions and give the reader food for thought. Generally speaking with timing being everything in life, it’s never too soon to get covered and addressing life insurance needs can provide a peace of mind to anyone no matter what age or in what situation. The safety net it provides can be invaluable; for monthly or yearly premiums your family will get a lump sum when you die, money that they can use as they see fit to pay bills, education costs, auto insurance, the mortgage….anything and everything. Or even save for the future. But there are some times when buying life insurance really makes sense. Here are some of those times: You are married or soon will be. Now there is not just you to think about, it's important to consider the long term security of your partner if one of you is not around. Ask yourself how secure your partner would be in the event of your untimely demise. Would they be able to cover funeral costs, credit card debt or a multitude of other obligations. You have children or are considering starting a family. Having a family really ups the ante; you have dependents that rely on you not just emotionally but financially. And there is education to consider. One survey in the US noted that bringing up a child to the age of 18 can mean kissing goodbye to nearly a quarter of a million dollars. In Thailand that may be considerably less - unless your child goes to International School then it could be considerably more. Your spouse who survives may have to take over your household jobs that could compromise her position if she is working. Would her income be enough in the event of your death? You are a homeowner or plan to be soon. It is true that owning your own home provides a sense of security but that may not be the case for a surviving spouse should you die and the mortgage has many years to run. A term life insurance policy is a good way to pay off the mortgage and cover other debts should the situation arise. You have retired or will do so soon. It may be that you are caring for grandchildren or even someone disabled in the family. Or it could be that a surviving spouse will outlive you by ten or twenty years, even more if you have married a younger person. Will your spouse and any dependents be adequately covered so that they can continue to have a comfortable lifestyle in the years ahead? When you take on additional debt. Apart from things like mortgage payment, maybe you have taken on debts like student loans or car loans - remember that those left behind will be liable to make sure these are paid in a timely manner. Are they able to do so? When your career changes. It is recommended by most providers to get coverage for seven to ten times your annual salary to make sure that everyday expenses and bills are covered. If you’ve enjoyed a rise (raise) recently or landed that new job make sure that your policy reflects those changes. So you’re single and happy and think you might live forever! Of course, nobody really believes that but you’d be surprised (perhaps) by how many young people believe it’s just not going to happen to them! You’re still likely to have financial responsibilities such as credit card or debt from college fees. According to US data about two thirds of graduates owe $30,000 already. Also many single people are helping aging parents. Ask yourself what will happen to them if your financial input suddenly disappears. Could they be left in a dire situation? Life insurance can be especially affordable when you are young and is a great way to boost your financial plans. Finally…. Many people buy life insurance when an important milestone comes around, be it a fortieth, fiftieth or some such birthday. That may sound nice but some insurance companies round up your age once you reach your half birthday. Getting covered is quicker and more affordable than you might think. So NOW could be the best time to act to secure the future for the loved ones you may leave behind. Rather than wait for the next big milestone or life change. Contact your provider now. For more information on health insurance, including a choice of coverage up to 30M baht and premiums starting from just 882 baht/month* contact Aetna now

  23. Orchid Palm Homes have donated 30 footballs to Wang Bost School and Nong Hieng School. They were handed to the sports teachers from the two government run schools in Hin Lek Fai last Friday. Kru Veerasak Thongpom from Nong Hieng School and Kru Chavuarid Huthip from Wang Bost School received 15 footballs each. Also present was Black Mountain Hua Hin Football Academy Head Coach Gary Stevens. He thinks the donated footballs will help the schools to offer better coaching to the children, “As a coach I know how important it is to have enough balls to give every child one each. We have fantastic facilities at Black Mountain, thanks to the Hua Hin International School, but some of the local schools aren’t so fortunate and it is good to be able to help them out in this way.” Stephen Ayling, the owner of Orchid Palm Homes, said, “We are proud to support local, grass roots football through sponsoring children from impoverished backgrounds to train at Black Mountain Hua Hin Football Academy and sponsoring local tournaments and competitions. We hope donating these balls will help the two schools to offer a better level of training to their pupils.” Orchid Palm Homes also sponsors ten children from Nong Hieng and Want Bost schools to train on scholarships at the Black Mountain Hua Hin Football Academy. They get free training, free kits, free boots and are able to train four times per week at the Hua Hin International School.
  24. Do you fancy living in Thailand long term? Wondering what your visa options are? You might be in luck as the Thai Cabinet has recently approved a new 10-year visa program for high-net-worth individuals, highly skilled professionals, and retirees. If you think that might be you (even if you’re suffering from a bit of imposter syndrome), it’s worth considering this new visa. You don’t need to look far as our friends from Pacific Prime Thailand will summarize the requirements and details in this article. Why has the cabinet introduced the new 10-year visa? Let’s start with the context. As this new 10-year visa scheme is aimed at wealthy foreigners and skilled professionals, experts hope that it will help fill Thailand’s anticipated shortage of talent in the digital sector (including blockchain, data science, and artificial intelligence) and boost the Thai economy in the process. Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana, a spokesperson for the government, said that Thailand forecasts over one million applicants over a five-year period, which is expected to inject approximately THB 800 billion in foreign investment and THB 270 billion in tax revenue to the Thai economy. What are the benefits of the new 10-year visa? There are a number of benefits when it comes to getting a 10-year visa. You won’t need to worry about visa matters for the next decade and will also receive other benefits such as foreign tax exemptions and eased regulations for property ownership. That being said, the specific details and benefits of the 10-year visas are still being drafted so nothing is set in stone yet. Who is eligible for the new 10-year visa? Are you excited to apply for the new 10-year visa? Hold your horses - you should first check whether you fall/are likely to fall in one of the below categories. In case you don’t fall in any of the below categories, you can also look into other Thailand visa options such as Non-immigrant visas, Elite visa, etc. High-net-worth individuals To qualify under the high-net-worth individual category, you’ll need to have an annual income or pension of at least USD 80,000 for the past two years. In addition to this, you’ll also need net assets of at least USD 1 million. Highly skilled professionals To qualify under the highly skilled professional category, you’ll need to have an annual income of at least USD 80,000 for the past two years and you must work in one of Thailand’s targeted industries. This includes infrastructure building, logistical systems, and digital systems. Note: If you’re employed by an overseas company and wish to work from Thailand, you’ll also need to have more than five years of work experience. Retirees To qualify under the retiree category, you’ll need to be retired and have a monthly pension of at least THB 80,000. What’s more, you must not have previously invested in Thai government bonds of any kind. Planning to live in Thailand? Remember to get insured. Whether you’re planning to live in Thailand under the new 10-year visa program or any other visa program, it’s a good idea to secure access to the best healthcare the country has to offer. After all, your health and wellbeing are the most important thing in life and one that you shouldn’t take lightly. To make sure you’re not drowning in hospital bills, you can look into a health insurance plan via Pacific Prime Thailand. They help you compare the best expat health insurance plans in Thailand (including those that may be required for your visa category such as long-stay visa insurance) and offer plenty of support throughout your insurance journey.
