  1. I'm male, single, retired, British, 56 years old & living in Thailand. I spent my working life (about 25 years) in I.T. in the UK - programming/designing in various software houses - until I came here about 8 years ago.

My CV in a nutshell :

I have 7 'O' levels & 3 'A'levels; BSC (Hons) Computer Science; a TEFL qualification obtained in the UK (from Trinity college).

I spent several months 'Article Writing' for a Bangkok-based computer company. In that time I wrote around 30 articles, each consisting of about 1200 words each. I can send you samples, should you so wish.

I recently worked (from home) monitoring telephone systems for a major telecommunications company in the USA.

I have a fast internet connection at home and can work to suit (whether it be full or part-time).

Please PM me if you feel you can offer me something appropriate.

  2. Astral. Wish I'd seen your post earlier. I'm running XP Home (SP3) and had EXACTLY the same problem - AND I FIXED IT !!

The bottom line was that it was Avira Antivir (Free) screwing things up. When I uninstalled it the problem went away - and it's not come back. Don't know which antivirus program your using tho'.

A guy helped me get to the bottom of it on another forum. Feel free to read thru' this and to post your own problem if this doesn't help :

  3. Had the same message when I logged on the other day (but a different scenario).

Rang them up & it seems I owed about 132 Bht from the December bill. When I went to the 3BB desk at Carrefour, I was told that only one of the two barcodes was swiped at 7/11 which resulted in the discrepancy.

I didn't bother to argue the point - 'why was that 132 bht not included in every other bill since ?? Otherwise you don't even know if you owe anything till you get that screen when you logon !!' - 'cos I'd have just got blank looks.

    Typical inefficiency.

  4. Maybe related, maybe not from Truevisions, but unencrypted (FTA) on frequency 12355V:

    CNN

    ESPN

    Nat Geo Wild

    NHK

    Star Sports

...Best competition for UBC I've seen sofar!

Prasert. Is it possible to program this into the True decoder ?? If so what are the other values i.e. Symbol Rate, Polarization etc. If not - c'est la vie...

  5. A friend of mine went into the Sophon office and asked them about the synch issue. He was told :-

"...when the world cup first started they were transmitting Astro video & audio. So no problems there. A few days in, they were told (by Astro I guess) that they had no right to broadcast both, so now they broadcast the audio from Astro & switch the video over to the local thai streams, keeping the English soundtrack. That's it why it's now out of synch..."

    Humphhhhhh.........

  6. Further to my above post, I think you will find that the BBC will not transmit any commentaries on the internet - not even for the UK, which is why the Sun stepped in with their 'unofficial' service.

Have to disagree with that. BBC RADIO 5 LIVE will be broadcasting ALL World Cup matches live. I doubt they'd chop the internet feed. If you're outside the UK you'll hear the usual - "This broadcast in only for listeners in the UK" blah, blah. With a proxy or VPN that gives you a UK IP you'll be able to listen fine.

If you've read somewhere that there will be no internet commentaries, please update this and show a link (if poss.). Thanks.

  7. You can listen to BBC radio on the iplayer just not watch tv.

We've already gone over this in this thread, and i thought it was established and agreed that outside of the UK, you can not listen to the radio either.

Not even thru a proxy server ?

Basically, you CAN listen to all UK radio stations abroad - even the BBC, but not any TV at all. However, when there are Premiership matches etc. broadcast on radio - all UK radio stations will restrict them to UK listeners only. A proxy server or VPN which provides you with a UK IP address will do the trick (for TV & radio).

  8. I have 2 points

    1. Do you have to have a new HDTV to watch it [even without the commentary] will an "old fashioned" LCD or Plasma screen work?

    2. Where exactly is True - opposite Carrefore. I have looked several times bur can only find them in Sukhamvit.

    1. The HD box will supply all channels and it will additionally have an HDMI connection at the back - for connection to an HDTV. If your TV has 'old-style' connectors, just connect it as normal. It'll work.
    2. Stand on the steps at Carrefour and look across the street to the right. On the corner of the Soi is the office. I believe there's a big red & white UBC sign outside. (They probably don't realise they're 'True' yet).

  9. I know there's other posts re. True & HDTV, but I thought I'd open this one as a friend of mine visited on of the True offices in Pattaya (opposite Carrefour) and quizzed them about HDTV & the World Cup. This is what he was told :-

    • The HD box cost's 4000Bht to rent. If you already subscribe however, you've no doubt paid 2000Bht already, so will only need to pay an additional 2000Bht. They will come and install it.

    • If you want to watch the World Cup in HD, there is no subscription for this month while it's on - that's a freeby. GOLD customers will pay however, an additional 290 Bht/mth thereafter. (Don't know other prices).

    • Here's where it gets interesting...The sports channel is in the THAI LANGUAGE ONLY for the duration of the world cup !! There is no option to switch it to English. After the world cup has finished, whatever they decide to put on that channel WILL be in English as well as Thai !! But read the next point...

    • ...True ARE broadcasting the World Cup in ENGLISH but only for a price (which I don't know). I guess that works similar to Pay-As-You-Go and you can opt to have English for (some ??) matches.

If someone can confirm/expand this last point, that would be information well worth knowing !!

A bit of background...True has the sole rights to show the World Cup in Thailand and they've sub-let (for the want of a better word) it to Thai TV so that games can be watched on Channels 3,5,7,9,11 ?? for those who haven't got access to Sophon or True.

That's it as I've been told. If anyone can confirm/update - or even deny - these facts, please feel free to do so, then we might have the whole story before they think it's all over (it is now !!)

  10. Im also on premier maxnet but its also called 3BB now in Pattaya but havent had any outages.. it may be something locally that is causing your problem maybe a phone line or the modem/router? which package are you on?

Also if your computer savy you can check the details of your connection in the router normally 192.168.1.1 into your browser then username admin password TTT (later models may have changed the password).

under there you can check the decibel levels(DB) to see if there is a lot of interference.. I once had too much and had some engineers come out.. they had to downgrade my speed so I would stop losing my connection because the signal was poor. Look for SNR Margin and Line Attenuation under your router page.

    Cheers for that.

    I'm on Premier 4Mb. (2650 bht/mth). Runs at 5Mb now.

Will check those details. Everytime I've been down for a day tho' they said there was a problem & to "try again in the evening". By 5pm (both times) it was up.

  11. Not sure!

Using Maxnet Premier (which should be pretty much the same) and it's rock solid as ever...

That's exactly what I'm on (except they call themselves 3BB now) - but I have no internet for 2 day/s a week recently (on average).......mmmmmm..........

  12. What going on with 3BB nowadays ??

When it was Maxnet, I hardly ever experienced outages, but now it's 3BB, there are usually 2 days a week when there is no internet all day. For instance Sat May 15th and yesterday Thurs May 20th.

I called and they said there's a problem in Pattaya. It's always up by 5pm.

I've actually invested in a Hutch wifi dongle now as backup, 'cos this is occurring much too often !!

It used to be TOT that got all the stick, but I believe things have changed.

What are they playing at ?? Your thoughts please...

  13. Like Gary A says, your Leonics just needs a new battery. I have a 500 VA Leonics I've been using for nearly 10 years and a 750 VA I've been using for 6. I just change the batteries when they don't provide enough up time. Generally the batteries will last 2 or 3 years before they start to significantly weaken. When I lived in Pattaya I found the batteries at Wattana and Amorn. Wattana will change it for you if you take it in but the batteries are cheaper at Amorn and it's really easy to do yourself.

Thanks for that. I never thought about Amorn. Will go have a look.

  14. Thanks for all your replies folks. That's given me a lot of food for thought.

Am in Pattaya. Haven't seen anything even approaching 17K Bht. Seem to have a lot less choice here. Went into Tukcom, but there was a district wide power-cut so most of the shops inside were closed. I just got back & while I was away there was another power-cut and yet another scandisk on reboot. C'est la vie !!

    Maybe tomorrow..........

  15. I've seen a post about this before but can't seem to find it.

Anyway, my question is "What's the best UPS to buy ?"

I currently have a Leonics Explorer paid about 2000 Bht I think around 2 yrs ago. My PC is plugged into it and it's always plugged into the mains so should be fully charged.

We just had a power cut and it didn't even last long enough to shut the computer down in an orderly manner !!

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

  16. I bought a SONY KV-DA32 CRT Widescreen - just before the Plasmas/LCDs came out - if only I'd waited !!!!!

In order to activate the HD, the manual shows a cable from a digital TV receiver terminating in 5 plugs - 3 being composite video, the other 2 go into 2 HD inputs (same phono-style) labeled HD and VD with the word 'SYNC' linking them. I have absolutely no idea about this.

The TV has been discontinued. This is the only reference I could find :-

    http://www.sonybiz.co.za/search_acc_results.asp?CID=49&SID=103

Note it says "HD ready with double-component input" ????????

All inputs are phono/video/s-video/component-video. There is no scart/DVI/HMDI.

Anybody any idea how to get the HD working ??

  17. I've connected my PC to TV thru' a PC-TV converter. There are 2 outputs on the converter - a phono-style yellow connector which connects to a video-input on the TV (ignore the audio obviously) and s-video (which I haven't tried 'cos I haven't got a lead long enough).

The converter is about 500bht made by DTech and plugs into a USB port for power. Bought it from IT City (Tukcom) in Pattaya.

As said in a previous post - it's acceptable for watching streaming video, movies etc., but not for normal monitor use 'cos the text is not particularly clear. I have to run the PC at 1024x768 at 60Hz. Anything higher won't work.
