  1. Anyone else noticed MUCH SLOWER speeds since after the outage was fixed? I haven't measured to compare but it is painfully noticeable.

My speeds are about the same as they where before the outage, I have the 1025Kbs/512Kbs business package (2700 b/month) with actual speeds to BKK of around 850Kbs/400Kbs while actual speeds internationally can vary wildly from the BKK speed down to slower than dial up.

  2. I have the same problem, that the serever don't except my username, many times. However saturday night my tot adsl worked as usual.(please read clear usual,it does not mean satisfying).Don't know where in pattaya you guy's are located,I'm at soi khao talo.

I'm in Soi Nernplubwaan, anyone had a problem located on the light side or was it only on the dark side?

  3. My TOT ADSL had no internet connectivity last night from around 7PM and was still out when I went to sleep at aroun 1AM Sunday.

I tried to call the Sriracha center which are usually very good and sorts out the problems in minutes (038319183) as long as you can converse with them in Thai but the number was engaged all night and I couldnt get a response.

Anyone have any useful contacts for TOT ADSL other than the above number ?

Out of desperation I tried calling the useless call center.......Solly no hab ADSL Pattaya, signal broken velly solly maybe flixed in 1 or 2 day. TOT today not lucky velly solly.......grrrrrr :o

Internet came back during the night, did anyone else in the Pattaya are experience this outage ?

Checked the setup page of my router and ADSL was connecting to the server but PPP was not connecting, to me that sounds like that the server was not accepting my user name and password but and not an ADSL outage as normally that would show the ADSL not connecting ? Anyone who is savvy in these things have any thoughts on this ?

Wish I could get TT&T nut went to theri office last week to enquire about avaliability for Soi Nernplubwaan, no have, soi full no lines, OK so when will you have at which point thay all start laughing and obviously thought I couldn't understand Thai...ha ha falang ding dong ha ha grrrrrr again :D

  4. Thanks for all the replies. I can't talk her out of Cassava, from the sounds of it it's much less work than any other crop. Though she says she might be interested in doing 1 or 2 rai for Chili, anyone have any input on how easy/difficult chili is and what the retruns are like ?

Sounds like I got lucky with the land, it has a main road along one side and there is a smallish stream along the lower edge. 70K because I bought from gf's cousin who wanted to sell quick because of some illness in the family and had hospital bills to pay. Every cloud has a silver lining comes to mind.

  5. Anyone have any reports on the new Spices indian restaurant on beach road ?

Seems like the OP has lost interest in this thread and the Balti house idea was just another Pattaya dreamer.....oh well.

  6. There is a new Cable TV : ~T M N~; the "DarkSide" office is located on the previous BTV( Banglamung Cable TV) office between Sutawad Temple (Soi Nernplubwaan )and the Elephant Village.

    They advertise 80 channels 24h a day for 300 Thb + VAT(Month rate)

    Anyone any experience already ?

    Hi,

Talked to a friend yesterday, who just had it installed in his home. It seems they have a lot of MultiChoice (South Africa) channels including MM1, MM2 and 5 SuperSport channels.

    Greg

If one of the 5 supersport channels is the one that carries the EPL then this is a great deal and I would drop my UBC (True) garbage. If someone has more info on this service please post.

  7. I have to agree with the previous post, Bangkok Dental Hospital on Suk 49 is by far the best.

I had a root canal done this morning at BPH and the pain I was in was almost unbeleivable, I have had the sema treatment at the dental hospital in BKK and it was a totally painless procedure. Really learnt my lesson, so for me I will be doing the 6 monthly trek to BKK again to Suk 49.

Expensive, yes but IMO worth it.

  8. Where is the Rock House?

Is it the dark or black small place with good albeit too loud music?

Been there, but do not remember where it is.

    Any map?

    kdf

It's a bit difficult to see on the map but it's 2 doors down from Bob's bbq

  9. How about the Rock House Soi LK Metro. Friday night is curry night.
this week will be the delicious chicken jalfrezi , rice , popodoms and a drink of your choice for the measly sum of 200b .

hope to see lots of you there , and hopefully some new faces too .

you know it makes sense .

Sounds good, could do with a good Ruby Murry. Anyone else ?

  10. Although I like Carrefour for many I things, I refuse to but cooked meats or frozen food from there. Frozen food should be kept at below -18C when stored in a freezer, the last time I was in Carrefour I looked at the little digital temperature displays on all of their freezers and only 1 was below the required temperature, one was even actually 6C and the food inside was already thawed, while the food in many other of their freezers was soft to the touch.

  11. I have bought 4 rai of land about 30k from Buriram for 70000 Baht (good price ?) that my gf's family is going to farm, they recommend growing Cassava for the best return on the land, BTW I'm not expecting to make a living on this, just hope to make a little and maybe add another rai / year.

Anyway I was just wondering if any of you farmers who have better knowledge than me have an opinion on this, is Cassava going to give me the best baht/rai or would you go for another crop ?

    Thanks.

  12. The diesel one is very quiet and smooth. There is only a bit of vibration when parked at red lights and even then it's only through the gear mode selector.

Automotive engineers know what they're doing. They designed the brake system with enough stopping power for the weight of the car. You could put a brake disc kit in the rear wheels but it would only be needed if you significantly increased the power, if there were discs in the rear wheels with standard power there would probably be a tendency for the rear to slide under heavy braking. Most of the brake bias is directed towards the front anyways in most cars so drums are fine for the back. If the brakes aren't enough for you you could always just upgrade your brake pads and get braided hoses.

The top of the line diesel with the TRD body and suspension kit still uses drums in the rear.

Thanks, good to know the deisel is quiet, it sounds like the model to go for (some thai's where telling me to buy the petrol because it can be converted to LPG or NGV, but I have no interest in having a compressed gas cylinder in my boot (trunk) space, especially after seeing on TV last night a report on how these things can explode in an accident, my life comes before saving a few baht at the gas station)

In general I agree the automotive engineers know what they are doing, but sometimes they make mistakes or compromises too, the Mercedes A class comes to mind.

  13. I have TOT 1MB/512K package which is costing me 2700B/month, I see from the maxnet link that for slightly cheaper I could be getting 4M/1M from them, anybody know what the service is like from Maxnet in terms of how frequently it drops out ?

Also does anybody know if I would have to have a new TOT telephone line or if they would be able to connect to my existing TOT line that I'm using currently with TOT ADSL ?

Monty sounds like your a bit of an expert on this am I correct in thinking that If TT&T don't have a DSLAM within 2Km of my home then download speeds of 4M would not be possible ?

Is it possible to find out from the web or TT&T office where their DSLAM's are located ?

Why does your TOT ADSL package cost 2,700 baht; do you have a business package? I have TOT GoldCyber package (2 gigibyte download, 512k upload) and I only pay slightly over 1,000 baht.

Yes it's a business package but it still uses goldcyber as the username in my modem setup, so to be honest I don't really know what benefit I'm supposed to have with this business package as it's slower than your goldcyber account. Are you limited to a certain amiunt of downloaded data per month or something ?

BTW my TOT has been dropping in and out terribly over the last 2 or 3 days, usually only for a few mins to 10 mins but very annoying, be interesting to know if this has only been limited to TOT or if other companies have been dropping in and out which would suggest that there is a problem with CAT as I beleive all internet in Thailand eventually connects internationally via CAT.

  14. I'm thinking of buying a Fortuner but I'm interested to hear any reviews anybody has of them and which model to go for ?

I have heard that the deisel one is more powerful than the petrol version, but how noisy is the deisel one to drive ? How is the performance of the deisel compared to the petrol version ?

Also I have noticed when I walked past a parked Fortuner that the rear wheels had drum brakes, I would think the stopping distance on one of these heavy cars with drum brakes would be terrible, so are their models that have disc all round or can the drums be upgraded to discs ?

    Thanks for any opinions.

  15. Chesters off Soi Nernplubwaan

I have been using this place for many months now for breakfast which is always good, but finally today I decided to try them for lunch as I beleive it was Patsfangr who recommended their Fish and Chips.

Anyway I ordered the Fish and Chips (not on the menu though) with a bit of apprehension as many times F&C is a big let down in Pattaya but I must admit (even though frozen chips) the meal itself was very good but the Fish was delicious, easily the best Fish I have come across in Pattaya, the batter was absolutely delightful, very thin, light and crisp and the fish inside cooked to perfection.

I will definately be eating F&C here on a regular basis.

  16. When I arrived in Thailand a little over 3 years ago 1 Baht of gold could be bought for 8000B and I had a spare 1.4M Baht lying around and I thought about buying gold but instead I just left it fester in a bank.

With hindsight that would have turned into a nice 2.8M if I had followed my thoughts, anyway as Thai gold doesn''t show any signs of slowing this thought has re-occured to me again.

Now I know in Chinatown in BKK it's possible to buy 1Baht, 5Baht, 10 Baht and 25Baht gold bars, does anyone know of any gold shops in Pattaya that sells these bars ?

I would rather buy bars as an investment rather than jewellery as the bars are cheaper per baht.

Also has anyone else invested in Thai gold ? How did you get off ? Though I beleive you would have to have been very stupid or unkucky to have lost money on it ?

  17. I have to get some dental work done and I used to use the Dental hospital on Suk soi 49 in BKK which BTW is a great but <deleted> expensive place to keep your smile.

But going to BKK every 6 months for dental work has become old and it's time to get my work done in Patters.

Cost is no object as I have dental coverage as part of my health insurance, so with that in mind who do the expats here in Pattaya use or recommend for dental work ?

  18. I have TOT 1MB/512K package which is costing me 2700B/month, I see from the maxnet link that for slightly cheaper I could be getting 4M/1M from them, anybody know what the service is like from Maxnet in terms of how frequently it drops out ?

  19. I would love it, if it was the real deal, real spicy, and fairly priced. So, I know I am weird, so its probably a very bad investment. Drats. I want the balti!

BTW, I never noticed a Balti house in the USA. Certainly none in the SF bay area when I lived there. I don't really understand why not as balti is so good. Perhaps there are some in New York, but I wouldn't be surprised if there aren't. That might be a clue that Balti doesn't export well from the UK, as the US embraces most any foreign cuisine. I am guessing most non-UKers have never even tried it or even know what it is.

BTW, Ali Baba here serves one or two dishes in a Balti style pan, but they don't claim it is authentic Balti so I am assuming it is not. Anyone tried it and care to comment? I was only there once for a thali and don't like their cooking style very much of their standard Indian food.

I've been to Ali Baba many times and their food is OK but not great and the consistency is very hit and miss though I beleive they are one of the better Indians eateries in Pattaya which I guess really shows how poor the quality is here when Indian restaurants are concerned.

There is a new Indian restaurant opened on Beach road called Spices which I haven't tried yet, hopefully this one will be better.

  20. Indian restaurants are not doing well at present. a Balti house, i think not, even less customers to support 2 or three falangs.

May be a balti house come, chip shop, with room for a som tam table. and indian taylor shop. want buy new suit mate, boss,!!!!!!

INdian restaurants are not doing well because of the lack of quality in the indian establishments here in Pattaya. I have tried most and they are well quite awful when compared to a decent Brit style Indian.

IMO if somebody can get some Brit indian chefs and make Brit style food in the right location in Pattaya then it would be a hit with both the expat and tourist communities.

  21. If you did a search on the numerous thai and pattaya forums for Indian restaurants I think you will find there is a great deal of interest in trying to find a good UK style Indian restaurant in Pattaya.

There are a number of INdian restaurants here but none that could be called good UK style Indian food, there are some which are just too bland with hardly any spicyness at all and then there are others which tend to be thai orienatated and way too spicy with even the chicken tikka being too hot to eat.

If you could get a restaurant going with Indian chefs who have succesfully catered for the British tastes it would have winner written all over it. Though a word of warninng if you are expecting the expat crowd (propaly would be your main clients) to fork out UK prices then it probably will fail, the prices would have to be relative to the costs in Thailand. Chicken dishes for example would have to be a lot cheaper than the equivalent chicken dishes back home as chicken is so cheap over here. Then on the other hand Lamb wich is expensive you could probably get away with UK or even slightly higher prices.

Guess it boils down to that you really need to know your market.

Also you should sign up with the 2 food delivery services that we have in Pattaya Door 2 Door and Waiters on Wheels as a lot of your custom would come from expats who just want to have the food delivered to their door and eat at home.

Good luck and keep us informed if this becomes a starter. ooh for a UK style Indian in Pattaya, here's hoping.

  22. How about getting the forum sponsors to provide some prizes ??? Another thai forum is putting up some decent prizes for their fantasy league including 5000 baht cash free beer and BF in a bar, 2000 baht voucher for another bar and bottles of spirits.

Be good to drum up some interest in this one if prizes where donated.
