  1. Is it possible they want the credit card cancelled before they will release your term deposit? If the term deposit was meant to be surety for your credit card then that could explain it. It's unlikely that Kasikorn have stolen your money if that is what you are inferring. If there weren't clear written instructions about what was to happen with the deposit when it matured then it's also possible the deposit has been automatically rolled over into a new term deposit. Best thing to do is to go to the bank where it was all set up on Monday and talk to them, not some other branch. Problems in Thailand when dealing with branches other than where you set up an account are not unheard of.

  2. have to do a day trip to singapore next week. Any info on cheap flights please??

Go to the websites for Jetstar Asia, Tiger and Air Asia and compare prices and schedules. One should have the cheapest flight (Wednesday is usually the cheapest day to fly). Sometimes you need to use a different return airline to get the cheapest round trip price. Tiger use the LCC terminal rather than Changi but if the price is right then it's not a problem as you can get to the main terminal easily with the shuttle bus if you want to use the MRT instead of a taxi for a trip into town. If prices are similar then my preference for airline is in the same order I've listed.

  3. Flew on Thai from Australia last week. Plane was new, good inseat entertainment, food was ok, staff were good. Baggage allowance, surprisingly not a peep when I checked on 2 suitcases weighing 32+kg total for economy travel.

If anyone has frequent flyer points to redeem then maybe the Australian routes might be worth a look as my flight was only 20% full. Either the prices are too high (my ticket was reasonably priced) or the horrendous Australian exchange rate is taking its toll. I know a few people who visit Thailand for medical treatment and everything is on hold due to the drop in the exchange rate.

  4. Without knowing exactly what you want, my feeling is with the recent fall of the pound (and other currencies) against the Thai baht, any savings you may have been able to make a couple of months ago have now vanished. There are some Thai online computer stores linked in the FAQ so convert their prices and see how they compare to the UK.

  5. There was also an article in Database today. Limit of 100 units at that price or if you buy a regular notebook Acer have a promotion where you get one for free.

The Tesco promotion was on last weekend, 19.990 baht, buy one get free on Samsung 26" lcd tvs. Had about 20 cartons when I saw them but nobody was buying and I passed the display a few times, but sugar at 9 baht a bag... could hardly get into the store as the pallet was parked next to the entrance and there were a hundred people gathered round.

  6. Stress minimised at Dusit Zoo

Bangkok's Dusit Zoo made special arrangements to protect its 2,300 animals from being stressed out by the explosive noise and smoke from Tuesday's clashes in its neighbourhood between antigovernment protesters and police.

The zoo, located opposite the Parliament building, moved two noise sensitive lesser anteaters to Chon Buri's Khao Kheow Open Zoo, Zoological Park Organisation deputy chief Prayuth Navacharoen said yesterday. Kangaroos and wallabies in cages near the Parliament front road were also moved to a quieter corner of the zoo, he said.

  7. Forget about running a computer for two hours unless you want to start spending up big. A mid range UPS will cost about 2000 baht for a local brand or 3,000 for a decent APC model. Depending on how much power your computer needs to run you can expect anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes running on battery. The idea for a UPS in this price range is to be able to run during short term outages and to save your work if it looks like the power will be out for an extended period. Average life for a UPS is supposed to be 3 years on the original battery, I have one APC that is still on the original battery after 6 years and works okay but it's only on a computer used mainly for the internet so nothing mission critical. Replacement batteries everywhere for around 500 baht.

  8. Fortunately she offered to correct the situation, but charged me an additional 2% for using a credit card.

I do not know if I was fleeced or not, but I was not disappointed. 3 seats for the family, one-way, for $2800 US (98K+ baht).... oh yeah, Bkk to IAD (Dulles, Wash DC, USA)

Pretty common in Thailand for a travel agent to charge a fee for using a credit card I've found. My ticket mentioned previously cost +3% however add my cost of travel and my time to go the office to pay in cash and I really wouldn't have saved paying cash.

  9. As there are some travel agents reading this thread I will ask my question here rather than starting a new topic.

What is the reasoning behind the x3, x4 pricing on some airline websites? If people book direct with the airline then wouldn't the airline save money as they don't have to pay commission to travel agents? With e-tickets it's even simpler as now once your payment has been accepted they send you a ticket via e-mail, no paper ticket to deliver or collect.

I don't see why a ticket can be booked for $1000 with a travel agent in person or online, yet the same ticket when booked online with airlines like Thai or Cathay can cost $3000+. Even if you turn up to the airport and buy a ticket from the airline ticket counter a few hours before departure you don't pay anywhere near the prices you see quoted online. Do these airlines not want to do business online? If that's the case then why bother even having a website as no one with half a brain is going to pay thousands of dollars for a basic flight that can easily be purchased everywhere else at less than half the price.

  10. Input: AC 110-220v 50/60Hz AC10mA

    Output:DC 5.00V +/-5% DC 200-300mA +/-30mA

I've noticed in Singapore there are different versions, $6, $13 and $20. The $20 ones are all white and shiny so priced to sell to iPod owners I suppose.

I have a Creative MP3 player and on the Creative website they were selling the charger for $49.99 which was half the cost of the player :o

Hardware House were promoting the same player recently with a free USB charger that looked the same from memory but valuing it at only 199 baht (SD$9)...

  11. When you go to places like Pantip take a look in the shops that have boxes of parts all over the shop floor. I have the one pictured by Rice King ($6 in Singapore) but I found a smaller, slimmer version with flat retractable prongs only yesterday, 50 baht at IT Square and recharges my MP3 player just fine.

  12. I have a Thai Air flight due for payment today. The price on the Thai Air website was originally 39,xxx baht, the price booked online (through another forum sponsor) was 36,800. I've been advised the price today has been reduced to 35,500 baht, so I save on the flights 1,300 baht. The price for the same flight on the Thai Air website has now risen to over 100,000 but that could be partly due to the departure date being a lot closer than when I first looked but as most people realise, if you want a cheap flight then the airline websites are usually the last place to look. I think Cathay Pacific is the worst, I can't understand how anyone would even consider purchasing a ticket off their website with the prices being four or five times what a travel agent charges. Cathay are a great airline but their website has put me off looking elsewhere for their flights as well.

  13. Watching it you have to wonder if all of the racers had ever seen TAR before, some seem so unprepared for the type of challengers they face.

When Natalie referred to sleeping at Suvarnabhumi as "her darkest hour" it told you her days were numbered. When Pailin was trying to change tyres, a 5 year old child would have been of more help than Natalie was. You really get the impression that Natalie has had a pretty pampered life and has never had to do much for herself in the real world. It's no wonder there are all the rumours about her marriage if she is the same away from the cameras.

As for Mai, I couldn't believe how a Thai could be bawling their eyes out over putting some chickens in a basket. I guess it's lucky they didn't have to chop their heads off. crying.gif

Pailin looked good, cool under pressure, just got on with things instead of complaining, great girl, and with a better partner she'd be a potential winner.

  14. memory - 2gb ddr3

Motherboard - P35 intel chipset. Gigabyte EP35-DS3L is excellent value.

GA-965G-DS3 uses DDR2, not so future proof but PC6400 is excellent value at the moment. Agree that P35 motherboards are also excellent value even if they are already a little dated. If you weren't gaming then for sure they would be fine but just in case do some research on the more recent P43 and P45 chipsets to see if they may be relevent for you. E8400 is the sweet spot still for dual core cpu's if you intend to do any overclocking. Dual core for gamers, quad core for video editing type tasks is the current rule of thumb.

The new ATI cards are good. For value the 4670 but for heavy gaming look at the 4870.

Cases, Lian-li for conservative styling but well built, Thermaltake or Cooler Master for more bling.

I like Enermax for the power supply, Corsair is also a good brand, 2000 baht is the minimum for something of decent quality whatever brand you decide on. 500W is plenty for most setups.

You can get an idea of prices at http://www.thanni.com/ Either Pantip or Fortune are fine, stick to the well known shops like Hardware House or JIB for most of your components. It's all obsolete by the time you get home from the shop anyway no matter what you get :o

  15. Just go to Pantip and ask at the laptop repair shops you will find there if you take a walk around. You won't find any of the regular shops selling motherboards for laptops as there is no normal retail market for them. Motherboards for laptops are much more specific unlike a desktop where you have a wide range that might fit the bill. Like a lot of people I can easily upgrade or put together a desktop but with a laptop, adding some memory or replacing a hard disk or DVD is about my limit. If I thought the motherboard needed replacing then I'd either get the manufacturer to replace the board or if the cost is crazy expensive, buy a new laptop. If it's for some highend but obscure brand in the UK then you're probably not going to find it in Thailand anyway. I'd say get it checked by a good repair shop in Pantip (search TV for some previous suggestions) when you're in Thailand next as if you're lucky it might be as simple as a loose connection or an overheating problem and not require a motherboard replacement.

  16. Maybe they don't run but you do see the same staff who checked you in later on at the departure gates for international flights with Jet Star, Tiger etc.

There are reports that Tiger "are considering allowing passengers to check in after its 45-minute cut-off time if they are willing to pay an additional fee... in a bid to reduce the number of irate passengers being told they can't check in despite arriving at the terminal well before departure."

Air Asia are very proud of their On Time Arrival Record. To do this they regularly depart early??????????????????????????? :o

I've only ever been on ONE Air Asia flight that left on time out of the dozens of times I've flown with them. What am I doing wrong? :D

  17. So you don't wanna say that omnia has good camera I hope because that would be the biggest lie in history.

Try to explain me how you can make a decent picture with a camera that takes 5 SECONDS between the the point that you push the button and the time the shutter closes.

Lets say your child has their first diving lessons and you want to make a picture because you're proud about.

You push the button when they jump but by the time that the shutter closes they are climbing out of the pool already.

In my opinion a real shame for a phone with that pricetag.

It's a phone for cryin' out loud. If taking a decent photo is important to you then use... a camera!!!

Some more websites of Bangkok appliance dealers for you to check out.

If you're upcountry then go to your nearest Powerbuy, HomePro, Tesco or Big C. There's generally not much difference in price from shop to shop, main thing to lookout for is any bonus buys e.g. buy a fridge and maybe get a free tv thrown in if you're lucky. In HomePro if you go in there and tell them you have a big order and you want to get in and out of the shop as quick as possible then unless it's the weekend you're going to have staff coming from everywhere to help you. Someone mentioned it before and it's true, chances are if you're not home quick then the delivery truck will be waiting for you when you get home. :D

Some places like Powerbuy can have member type cards so if you spend a lot of money you can get a discount or something free based on points accumulated for purchases. Might be an idea to advise your credit card company in advance if you will be making some big purchases in case they block your card when they see a big charge coming through from Thailand.

If you haven't already worked it out, bringing in furniture or large appliances from overseas is not the way to go.:o
