  1. Last few times back in to Suvarnabhumi I've been stopped and had my bags x-rayed and asked questions, never used to happen but I never had anything to be concerned about so don't know why I'm getting checked lately. Last time there was some man who must have had too many cigarettes asking everyone in line to carry some through for him...  :o

  2. the press are not allowed in thai courts

Maybe you mean tv cameras are not allowed inside the court room? I've been in Thai courtrooms with multiple reporters gathered around the accused conducting interviews. No objection at all from the court officials present. Can't say if it's always allowed but it has been when I've attended a Thai court.

  3. A Swiss reporter charged over a report made a number of years ago. Said reporter has no idea there is a warrant out for him and is arrested at Suvarnabhumi. Few details available about the charge and who instigated it. Has a familiar ring doesn't it?

Funny how it's a Swiss. Someone was telling me the other week about the coverage in the Swiss newspapers earlier this year of the Nicolaides case, how it went into a lot more detail regarding the background to the charges... payback time perhaps?

  4. Many Thai people however disregard the notices, and waltz through the check-outs with a trolley full of these items, and the cashier does not say a word. They do however refuse the farang in similar circumstances.

Had that exact experience myself.  :o

  5. please do so from the perspective of....."money is no issue, building the best dam_n system is!!" Please.......oh pleeeeeeeeease, don't let the specs below stop you from correcting any errors or omissions you think I've made, k? I'll post the specs below....and you'll notice that it is comprised of off the shelf parts. I

A faster CPU would be the i7 Extreme Edition 965 Nehalem 3.2GHz... Overclock that and you will likely need water cooling!

Keep the 1TB drive for storage and get either a Raptor, Intel SS or maybe some enterprise drive for the OS.

  6. I am afraid to say Thais will keep a condo, apartment, townhouse or house empty rather than sell it at a lower price.

They do seem to prefer to let a house crumble and become overgrown rather than renting it out. Too afraid the tennants won't vacate if they ever find a buyer. I've seen many houses fall into such total disrepair that I can't believe anyone would want to buy them now. I still drive past one house I considered renting or buying 5 years ago when it was still a nice property, now it's only good for bulldozing as it looks structurally unsound yet the sale price hasn't changed from the original high price five years ago. Even Thai people I've asked think the owner is crazy for believing anyone will want to buy it now.

  7. J.I.B. have a number of stores in Panthip as well as in just about every IT Mall in Thailand. Their logo is yellow writing on a blue background, easy to find on second or third floor. If you wander around you will find one soon enough. Like most of the big shops they will have a list at the front of the shop with prices so you don't need to haggle. You can check prices easily from shop to shop but most of the time there won't be much difference but doesn't hurt to compare.

  8. If you just want basic RAM and not hi-speed RAM for overclocking (unlikely for a laptop) then just buy from any large shop e.g. J.I.B; Hardware House, Big IT, Data IT etc. Corsair or Kingston Value will work with almost every laptop, 500 baht for 1GB, 900 baht for 2GB DDR2 667. Older type RAM might be more expensive. If you're not sure the type of RAM you require then go to the websites for Corsair or Kingston as they have tools there to advise what will work for you.

  9. Either will be good. Several posters here have the Scorpio Black, a search will bring up a recent topic where it's discussed. My guess would be the Scorpio is the better outright performer but the Travelstar might be the better allrounder e.g. cooler, lower powered and quieter but still doing most things very well. Just google both models and you will find reviews which will help you decide. Also take a look at the customer reviews on newegg.com, always worth a look.

You say the travelstar is cooler, others say the WD is cooler...

Only my guess as I'm not looking to buy a new laptop drive at the moment. Lenovo use Hitachi drives in their laptops, there's one in this laptop I'm using now and the drive runs only about 10c above ambient as a rule, generally very quiet unless it is under heavy load. Either drive will be good, I don't think it's a case of one being far superior to the other. I'm looking at buying a new desktop drive and after reading many reviews there are several that have their good points and their bad points, no one drive is a winner above all others so I have to base my decision on do I want superior performance or lower power usage, lower heat and lower noise.

  10. Your choice is determined by the processor you select. Quad Core/P5Q or i7/ PT6.  i7 940 will be the better performing chip, so if you want super high end, blazing fast then you get i7. Of course being the latest technology this means there is always the chance of it not being 100% stable with everything you do. Plenty of people overclock the i7 processors but obviously the more you overclock the less stability you have so it's a case of finding what works for you.

Water cooling... unless you are a very serious gamer or an overclocker out to set new benchmarks then I wouldn't bother as all the latest chips run cooler than the old Pentium processors so a good aftermarket cooler from Zalman, Thermalright etc. will be all most people need. Even a stock standard 940 is going to be very fast.

  11. Still it doesn't say how carefull they are with the HDD packed only in plastic nor that I get

a new genuine one. The WD waranty site shows a lot of photo's of labels being changed.

In a few days I'll be in BKK 's Panthip , or I just have to wait 9 month to buy one in "safer" Europe.

Plenty of people buy hard drives at Panthip including I'm sure posters on this forum. I don't recall seeing many posters complaining about faulty units so I assume most people don't encounter problems any worse than in other countries. Stick to the big retailers and you should be okay.

  12. 17 February 2009, Barcelona, Spain  The GSMA and 17 leading mobile operators and manufacturers today announced that they are committed to implementing a cross-industry standard for a universal charger for new mobile phones. The aim of the initiative, led by the GSMA, is to ensure that the mobile industry adopts a common format for mobile phone charger connections and energy-efficient chargers resulting in an estimated 50 per cent reduction in standby energy consumption, the potential elimination of up to 51,000 tonnes of duplicate chargers1 and the enhancement of the customer experience by simplifying the charging of mobile phones. The group has set an ambitious target that by 2012 a universal charging solution (UCS) will be widely available in the market worldwide and will use Micro-USB as the common universal charging interface.

  14. What you get are usually OEM versions that come wrapped in an anti-static bag from cartons of 20. Retail versions individually boxed with all the cables and an instruction book are not common anymore and will usually cost a little extra. Same with DVD burners, buy in a plastic bag without cables as most people have some anyway and they are about 50 baht cheaper than the boxed version.

All aimed at system builders and at saving an unnecessary waste of cardboard and cables that aren't really needed by most people. Phone chargers are headed the same way as within a couple of years all the mobile phone manufacturers will use standard chargers so you will buy one separate if you need to instead of having 5 different Nokia chargers lying around like I have.

There are lots of Hardware House shops in Panthip.

  15. Reimar, I get your points about outdated models but the WD10EADS was released only late last year so it hasn't been out for even 6 months yet, still very much a current model!

Maybe I'll try asking at one of their shops and see what they say, could be it's a mistake on the website but after my recent experience trying to get an answer from another fairly well known company to a simple question I'm not confident. My question then was where could I buy their products in Bangkok... I ended up purchasing in Singapore, easier :o

  16. In the market for a new hard drive so I was checking out some prices for a 1TB. Considering getting the Green WD10EADS but looking at the Hardware House website it says they come with only a one year warranty yet on WD's own site it says 3 years for Thailand...  :o

I see HH sell some WD hard drives with as little as 6 months warranty. Anyone know why they do this, are they selling reconditioned drives or is there some other reason why a big retailer wouldn't be selling products with the warranty stated on the manufacturers own website? I hope another retailer sells WD drives with the correct warranty because otherwise I think I might be better off with some other brand.

  17. I get up to 270 kb/s on popular torrents but of course if it's an older torrent then you may be lucky to get even 50 kb/s.

I am using True 2MB at the moment and this is what works for me:

Global upload limit could be your major problem. Try reducing to 20 or 30. Only run a maximum of 4 torrents at the same unless they are all older torrents with few active seeds. Reduce max connections to 300, peers to 150, uploads to 5-10. Test on a new busy torrent e.g. try the latest ep. of Chuck this time tomorrow night.

  18. If you're running the kind of setup you have then sometimes it's part of the price you pay for being an early adopter, things don't always work like they should and even the shop that sells it probably hasn't had the time to gain experience in troubleshooting something that's close to bleeding edge technology. Maybe they should know everything but doesn't work like that in real life.

If you bought a memory kit then I can understand why they would want to replace the set and not just one because then there would be 2 mismatched kits floating about.

Do you think your overclocking might have anything to do with your problems? What CPU cooler are using?

  19. There are a lot of things that have not come out about this case and may never come out while certain people are still in Thailand. As to why Harry was ever charged... his book was first investigated several years back and it was decided then there was no case to answer because it was a novel and it was obvious Harry did not have an anti-monarchy agenda. There has been a lot of speculation as to why the case was reopened. It has been mentioned once or twice before on another website but the instigator was not Thai it seems. It may be similar to the BBC charges where the person who brought the charges about English language news reports reportedly cannot even read English... people in the media in Thailand know what I'm on about but no one can talk openly about it for obvious reasons.

The reason why he was not granted bail? Due to the charge, every judge was petrified of what would happen to them if Harry was to jump bail.

Harry has been through a lot and while you can certainly argue if what he wrote was wise, any sensible person should see the punishment he has endured is out of all proportion to the alleged offence. Good luck to him if he writes a book and it it sells a bundle however that will not even begin to compensate him and his family and friends for all the emotional and financial strain they have been through. I just hope Harry gets over his ordeal as quickly as possible and that his mother can recover from the major stroke she suffered, clearly brought on by the strain.

  20. IT City, Data IT, Big IT, the Acer shop or the HP Compaq shop.

Acer or HP will have something decent for 20/25,000 baht. Usually you get a 250-500GB hard drive in that price range but if you need more then check if it's easy to add an extra drive like a Western Digital 1TB for an extra 4k. If you want a PC for high end gaming or video editing then you need to spend more and maybe get one custom built.
