  1. If Open Office and AbiWord aren't good enough then probably nothing is as they're the freeware replacements that are always recommended. I use Jarte as a light MS Word replacement but then I never use even half the features of Word. If OO was exactly the same as Office then no one would still buy Office, if Gimp was the same as Photo Shop, if Foxit was the same as Adobe... you get the idea. In business sometimes the bloated paid for version still winds up being the best choice.

ASUS "P5QL-EM" Intel G43 with HDMI for 3,340.00 might be worth a look. Not always favorable reviews but that can be due to it not being a overclocking board but then most mATX boards are useless for overclocking anyway.

Saw this at the Singapore IT Show recently but don't know if you can get it in Thailand, about $300 Sing without the harddisk.

  3. Asus eee box was at Commart.. if you want something slower than a five year old low level Celeron. Fine for a cheap netbook or if you have a only a tiny workspace but when you can buy an E5200 for 2600 baht... false ecomomy imo, like buying a Trabant and for slightly more being able to get a Camry, you'd get the Camry everytime. If you really only need something to do very basic tasks then the eee is okay I guess but I'd be spending a bit more to get something with the capicity to step up and run most things if needed.

E5200, a cheap mATX ASRock 945GCM-S mobo, 160GB Harddrive and 1GB RAM can be had for under 6,000 and will all run quite nicely. Just don't get an el cheapo power supply.

  4. Everyone says Princo are rubbish yet all the Thai vendors use them and all I can say is the ones I have all still work just fine. In fact all the CDs and DVDs what ever brand I've used still work but after a couple of years I've updated the data and made new copies anyway. For anything important I always make two copies with the data verified, as well as keeping a copy on an external harddisk and on a flash drive. For really, really important data I also keep that online as well in case my residence was destroyed or everything stolen.

  5. Expecting to get a PM each time a post or topic is deleted? It's not going to happen on most forums and with all the stuff that gets deleted on this forum I think the moderators would be forever sending PMs  :o

  6. Do you understand Thai?

Some parts of the hearing may be in English or Russian. For an important or newsworthy case they will have a translator in court. Thai court hearings like most court cases are generally very dull. Hollywood can make it seem exciting but it rarely is in reality.

  7. Yes, they always let random farangs into extremely internationally sensitive court proceedings that involve both the US and Russia..... :o
Actually.... you will probably find they do exactly that. Every time he makes a court appearance there is plenty of coverage on Thai television so it's probably not a closed session. The Criminal Court is on Ratchada, a kilometre or so north of Lat Phrao MRT.
  8. Pic of a bunch of bikes in the Daily Express today with the comment:

"Chiang Mai police yesterday announced that 102 untaxed big bikes worth more than Bt5 million had been impounded in the past seven days."

Looks like they got their target.

  9. The BIOS is the original one that came with the board. Have you had this board from new? It's really a board aimed at serious gamers so perhaps  a strange choice if you're not into games. If you have had it from new then it's probably not a BIOS problem as your CPU is an older model with few issues, same goes for your video card. If it worked okay up until now, then if it's not connected to your upgraded items it's going to be hard to tell where the problem lies. Check the manual to make sure you have the RAM installed in the correct slots. Try running with only 2GB installed also.

The EZ Flash method is what I've always used with a similar system to yours. It can take a few tries to get it to work as the Asus servers always seem overloaded. If it were me I would look at updating to 1702 but read the Asus site for all the information to see if you think it applies to you. Looks like you may need a floppy, been a while since I've updated my BIOS for a board around the same age as yours as there hasn't been anything of concern but your board was still getting updates late last year and not just for newer processors.

  10. Don't think he found anyone. It's asking a lot when you leave it until you're at the x-ray machines with Thai officials all around you.

I'm usually a helpful person  but I don't want to see a Thai Visa news clippings thread reporting on my arrest at Suvarnabhumi for evading import tax, my being held at Bangkok Remand Prison awaiting trial and 100 righteous Thai Visa posters saying I should be left there to rot because we are all only guests in Thailand...

  11. Check the manual but with a lot of Asus boards they have a method where you can update the BIOS over the internet, no need to use a floppy. First take a look when you start up your computer to find which number BIOS you have installed then check the Asus website to see the later versions available. Before installing anything read why each BIOS update was made. If you think the reasons aren't relevant to your system then don't update.

    E6400?

    Brand and size of PSU?

    Powercom Imperial 1500VA?

  12. RAM, what make and speed? On the Asus website it says supports 667/533.

Anything new will always be the prime suspect so swap out for something that worked before and see if that makes a difference.

Always make sure BIOS and drivers are up to date especially for your video card/s.

Recheck the manual to see if everything is set up correctly with all the Nvidea options on that board.

  13. I have contributed to Prachatai.com ...what are my chances of being arrested next time I am in Thailand? :D

Depends on if you used a proxy or not... if not then it's down to the travel agent for some brochures on Cambodia, Vietnam, anywhere but Thailand where you are now probably considered a threat to national security :o

  14. Usually the only time a judge will order a court closed to the media is when a lese majeste case is being heard.

No shortage of press coverage in the most recent lese majeste case involving a foreigner, at least 5 camera crews outside the courtroom and a dozen reporters inside. Might be different for Thais up on the same charge as it does seem to take a while for their case details to make it in to the media or it could be simply no notice given of a date when a case is going to be heard.

  15. I think whatever speeds you get are more to do with the number of seeds and the newness of the torrent and of course the area you live in e.g. central Bangkok during office hours is not conducive to high speeds. The other thing is the lack of other Thai seeds for many English language torrents. If you were in the USA then you would have plenty of local seeds but it's not the case here. When you do have a couple of Thai seeds then I find the speed can go from zero to 270k/Bs within 90 seconds of beginning the torrent as no one seems to limit the bandwidth available to local peers.

Interesting the list on that website showing bit torrent blocking country by country. Thailand is land of the free, the USA most definitely is not.
