  1. Can someone start a 'I Hate Jet Star' thread please, doesn't seem to be one of those currently.

I'm a happy Tiger, Air Asia, Jet Star customer, flown all of them plenty of times over the last few years. I don't expect the world so for what I pay I've few complaints. Trying to fly anywhere in the region early December would have been difficult no matter what airline you were flying with due to the Bangkok airports being held hostage and a police force and army in name only so expecting a smooth resolution of any problems might have been expecting too much. 3000 baht for phone calls... Try Skype next time.

  2. Ended up rushing the mother to the vet Saturday afternoon as she was in a bad way, very weak. Took a couple of days to try and settle a major infection before she was operated on last night. Something had happened before the puppies were born so I guess the weakened state of the mother due to so many puppies was the last straw. Came through the op okay I'm told, going to leave her at the vet for at least a week as don't want to stress her further taking her back and forth for change of dressings etc.

Four days of bottle feeding 24/7 was enough. Managed to get a couple of people who were interested in the pups to take some in early and continue feeding. Most went to a family who have a farm and apparently a sideline of raising dogs for sale. I've been assured by others they are good people who love animals and will take good care of them so that was the best option available. No way could we have raised 11 puppies, not enough room even if I wanted to. At least the cat has finally stopped throwing up all over the house in protest at all the freeloaders on the porch.

Got an e-mail back from SCAD with some suggestions and the advice that finding another dog to take over feeding would be difficult so things probably worked out for the best. All the puppies seem to be surviving okay so far so maybe they will all make it as it's nine days now since they were born.

  3. In Thailand Notebook get very hot, 65 degrees and more on CPU - not very good for performance and lifespan.

In Europa: CPU normally 45 degrees and they complain about that.

Tukcom only have small fan (no performance coolpad - see the size and speed of the tiny fans). THB 2-400.

Wattana had 1 coolpad priced at THB 2.000 (only had stylish look, still small fans who not help cool down the Notebook).

Have you seen Coolpad with "6" fans or larger in Pattaya, who realy helps cooling down Notebook/Laptop? - where ?

Take another look because in Bangkok every second PC accessory shop sell coolpads with 20cm fans, 199-250 baht. They might be cheap but will easily reduce temps by 5c and pretty quiet too. They come in boxes the same size as a round fluoro tube so are best suited to a 13"-14" notebook. Data IT in Bangkok sell a CoolerMaster stand for about 1500 baht, 2x7cm fans, a big slab of aluminium, more suited to a larger notebook. Jedi at Panthip sell a few different ones but all dual fan I think.

  4. Hi,

After 3 years using my Decided UPS it seems that it is now dead, but I guess that it's only about batteries that need to be changed.

Any idea where to buy batteries? The manufacturer said to go to Data IT but maybe I could find that kind of battery anywhere ?

    Thanks.

Amorn or Data IT sell what you want but plenty of other shops sell the batteries as well. Take a note of the details of your old one as there are a few different types.

  5. "There are a couple of Dell authorized outlets in Penang"

If anyone finds the Link to the Penang outlet shops, please post it -- Thanks

    http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/topics/topic.aspx/ap/topics/microsite/en/retail?c=my&cs=mydhs1&l=en&s=dhs

Checking out the site map link in any website turns up all sorts of information.   :o  I'd ring before making any trip to Penang though to see if they sell desktops.

Some Dell products are available at Power Buy. Power Buy Dell

  6. A few months ago there was an article in Bangkok newspapers about several new Dell computer stores that were scheduled to open soon -- I think one had already opened at some obscure Mall that I never heard of and several more were to open by the end of '08 --

Zeer Rangsit being the obscure Mall l imagine... :o

A lot of new shops open at Zeer lately. Can't recall if there is a Dell Shop amongst them although there is a JIB notebook shop selling Dell. If I'm past there during the week I'll take a look for you. I think there is now a Dell shop on the 4th floor of Fortune next to Synnex.

Dell in Malaysia or Singapore could be an option I suppose depending on FX rates. There are a couple of Dell authorized outlets in Penang. Locations and prices are on the website.

  7. Trying to look after a soi dog who gave birth to a litter of 11 last Sunday night. She is maybe 8 years old I'm guessing and has had puppies before but is struggling this time around. She is not surprisingly, weak and has now started bleeding from the nipple and there is pus about as well.

A vet has dropped by a couple of times to look at her and will come past again late today. He has given her anti-biotics and we are trying to hand feed the puppies with reasonable results I think, but I'm not an animal person. Seems to me the best idea is to find another dog to help with the feeding, at least for the next week. Any ideas on how to go about this? Have asked around but nobody including the vet knows of one here in the Rangsit area. Sent an e-mail to SCAD but being the weekend I'm not sure anyone will read it soon.

    Suggestions anyone?

  8. Lo and behold, using uTorrent, i get my 1Mb/s down and up speeds, 24/7.

At home (True ADSL, 1.5M/512K) i get EXACTLY the advertised speeds, again only when using torrents - "speed test" sites showing anything they want.

    Thanh

That's my experience as well. Just upgraded to a 2MB True connection and on popular torrents I get 250-260kBs downloads i.e. 2MBs as advertised.  :o

  9. If you can possibly go in to your local AIS office then they are always helpful and can usually tell you what is going on. While you're there also ask them to block spam SMS and MMS as that can be a problem. You may be getting charged for automatic messages without being aware of it, GPS is another possibility even if you don't think you are using it.

  10. Looking in Carrefour yesterday and about half of the DVD players had a USB slot. Cheapest one was only 770 baht although not surprisingly it  wasn't the nicest looking model. Saw a Pioneer DV310s for 2290 baht, maybe the best value of the well known brands.

  11. My Singapore EZ Link transport card can be used in Singapore 7/11's, McDonald's, Subway etc. and even for purchases from vending machines among other things. Maybe one day we will be able to do the same in Thailand.

  12. I had a Kingston Data Traveller 2GB fail on me recently as well, only a couple of weeks old and dead. Tried reformatting etc. but no luck. Nothing of importance and only 199 baht so not worth returning but maybe there is a problem with Kingston drives. I usually use SanDisk or Imation, some still going strong after 3 years constant use even if they're small by todays standards. Have to see if I can find it and maybe test drive Thahn's suggestion.

  13. When I bought this laptop, it only had 256 MB Ram. I think it cost me nearly 3000 baht to have an extra 256 MB slotted in 2 years ago. You got all that for 6,800 Bt! Bargain.

The price of RAM has crashed from a couple of years ago. Still have the receipt from late 2006, 2x1GB Corsair Value Select RAM... 8,800 baht  :D

Can buy it today for 800 baht. Lucky I didn't spend the 11,000+ for the XMS 800 version, now only 985 baht  :o

Saw 4GB Corsair RAM on an American website the other day, after rebate $15!!!

  14. From what you say, almost any basic desktop will do what you want. For 20k you will get something decent. The more you spend the little bit faster it will be, the more hard drive space you will have and the quality of components like the power supply and case will improve. There's no such thing as future proofing but if you don't play games and do lots of video intensive work then a 20,000 baht PC will still surf the internet and burn DVDs in a few years time albeit a little slower than whatever happens to be the latest and greatest processor.

Here's an example of what you can get.

    http://www.bigitshop.com/online-shopping/H...5L-Desktop.html

Price is for the main box only but add a budget 22" monitor like this and even after you add on a mouse, keyboard etc. you still have a decent PC for under 20k.

  15. If you scroll through the last few days there are several other topics about getting a new desktop computer...

A T1300 while not fast still should be okay for general internet, e-mail and word processing. Your hard drive might be only a 4200 RPM version, if  so the two easiest upgrades would be to a faster and larger 5400RPM model plus add another 1GB of RAM if you have room.

2GB memory is the minimum these days as it's so cheap anyway when building any new computer.

You didn't say how much your budget is but assuming you don't want anything high end then processors you would be looking at are Intel E2200, E5200 and E7xxx in order from slowest to fastest. You can find desktops from Acer or HP Compaq starting from about 12k through to 25k depending on configuration. If you're not gaming then you should find these satisfactory, certainly quicker than your current laptop.

I'd buy from a computer shop rather than a BigC and I'd get a genuine version of XP for about 3k from a reputable shop like Hardware House or JIB who will have a branch in the local IT mall in Khon Kaen. Vista isn't much different in price for the basic versions so up to you but I've never seen any compelling reason to upgrade myself.

  16. Haven't seen any 64GB flash drives for sale in Thailand yet. Don't think I've even seen any 32GB versions either but 16GB are easy to find. The main complaint you hear with 64GB drives is the low read and write speeds. Even leading brands like Corsair get some poor ratings from buyers on sites like New Egg.

  17. Top of the line

    i7 Intel processor

    6GB DDR3 RAM

    X58 Motherboard

    1TB+ Hard Drives

    HD4870 X2 or GTX295 Video Card

Value for money but still fast

    Intel Core 2 Duo E8500

    4GB DDR2 800 RAM

    P43/P45 Motherboard

    1TB+ Hard Drive

    HD4850 Video Card

Brand name computers might not be easily available in Thailand with i7 yet. If you don't game then HD4670 is good enough. See the other new computer thread from a couple of days back for more ideas.

  18. I dont want to threadfuc_k this, but on a slightly related topic, where is the best place to buy kit like this in thailand?  I used to use Dabs and Scan when i was in the UK.  Is there a simlar online shop, or is it just as cheao to go to Pantip?
You will find a number of high end shops if you take a walk around the ground floor of Pantip, Jedi is the best known but there are at least four others selling high speed RAM, exotic cooling solutions and expensive cases. On the third? floor is Busitek. You can also find some high end items at the JIB and Hardware House branches. JIB are opening specialty high end branches now so presumably they have one at Pantip. I've almost always found Pantip to be either similarly priced or a little cheaper than the best online prices in Thailand.
