  1. Oh, you know, the visa rules in my home country and here in Britian, where I live now, are far more demanding then Thailand's rules.

In Australia, forget just arriving on a plane.

In the UK, unless your from the EU, which makes you a conditional citizen of the UK, you must get a visa. Getting these visas is no simple matter - some of the Thai people I know here have to prove, in part by paying for expensive language courses, that they are here for legitimate purposes.

I'm not sure about the US, but I do know they've tightened up lately.

It saddens and surprises me that I regularly hear from some disgruntled Australian's, Briton's and American's that the Thai's are 'so bad' to us.

It is problematic that the visa laws do cause such inconvenience, but we 'can' get into Thailand, all of us!

Many Thai's cannot get into my country at all, not for any reason.

How welcoming is your country to Thai's?

Are you really benefiting Thailand by being there, as some suggest, or are you self-seeking benefits, but using the 'I'm benefiting Thailand' cliche in misrepresented, but, self-serving cliches?

    etr

I am an American that crossed from France to the UK. I get 6 months automatically. I didn't aply for any visa nor am I a resident of the EU. You may have other points but your argument about the UK border policy just isn't true

    The argument is true ...

You entered into the EU via France .... once in the EU you can travel anywhere in the EU (shengen visa) ... if you entered to the UK first you would have to present your visa and from there you may go anywhere in the shengen zone.

    Hmmm,

Millions of foreigners come to Thailand for legitimate reasons of holiday, weather, beaches, cost of living etc. I've never seen millions of Thais wanting to go the other way, if that was the case I am sure the respective governments would eventually change their visa rules when considering the income it would bring.

Hmmm..... but surely millions of foreigners (not just Thai) visit UK each year (same goes for most other EU countries)

  2. Thai PBS showing a group of people in GREEN T-shirts marching and protesting through the fields of Phichit in northern Thailand.

Will there be any colour left that is free of political meaning by the end of the month?

Wear Tartan i say - that should bamboozle everybody

  3. When i enquire for travel/medical insurance, seems i am in limbo with regards to my country of residence.

I am UK citizen, but registered as non-resident (for tax purposes), and this prevents me obtaining cover from UK insurance companies.

I work in a central asian country, for which i have seperate high risk insurance cover, through my employers, for this particulary country only.

Over the past few years, the majority of my time-off work is spent in Thailand, with occassional short trips to surrounding countries. But approximately 3 months in any one year in Thailand. It is where i call 'home' (Have house, car, girlfriend etc).

So, UK will not give me any cover as i am non-resident, and Thai companies are stating i do not reside long enough there!

    Any thoughts?

  4. I am in no way going to say I have captured the Thai perspective. What I will say is that there are lot of people utterly sick and tired of the whole thing including PAD, UDD, government and Thaksin and Sondhi. People writing on here tend to have a politicsal persuasion. A lot of ordinary people dont care or have time or inclination to care about politics.

My wife went to the local hairdresser before. This is where all the really important news gets passed around. No one had a clue about or any interest in what was going on at SVB. All the talk was of husbands, children's schooling, illness and recovery, etc.... Nothing different.

Who is the minister for Thai hairdresser saloons anyway?

Maybe he/she could do a better job running the country!

  5. Have only ever used the street-side cobblers - loads of them about

Even fixed my flip-flops in 2 secs flat with a couple of staples.

Anyway if yer stuck - i got a pair which i dont really wear much you can have - only 20 baht!

  6. Cheers for the advice reassuring if nothing else.

Paying 400 B seems the easy way out but I have been informed that they make money out of this 1st Insurance and a lot less hassle, this came from a Thai Cop.

My wife has police pull but they seem to love a Falang in distress.

I have contacted my insurance in UK and they in turn have said they would contact their lawyers in BKK to deal with the matter, however this was some days ago and I have heard nothing as yet so a call to them may be a good idea, albeit that the Local police have warned me not to do this.

So basically I have my UK insurance cover and the 1 st insurance cover of the car hire company.

The car hire company are all cops and my wife has told me to tell them is was her car if I am asked (I have not) what she has said I do not know but she is thick in with the police and local syndicate.

What makes it worse is that we are in the process of divorce so I don't think she has my interest at heart.

Thanks again I will call UK again tomorrow, but I can't bring myself to admit to Guilt for some idiots bad driving proven drunk driving who could have killed me and then give him a new car.

Seems like there's more to this story than first appears.

Hmm... Wife paying for a hit? :D OK, over to the conspiracy theorists... :o

    mmmmmmmmmmmmmm.......... (the plot thickens) :D

  7. Who voted they where in prison ?????

I DID = ITS CALLED BEING 'MARRIED' HEHE

    Ah...... the 'Prison' Visa

But there is hope yet - clause 212b, Para 16 states:

''In some cases, holders of this visa are granted automatic parole - but only on condition your financial status has deteriorated below expected levels''

Have often wondered if this is the same as the ''No money, no honey'' -or- ''Big farang buffalo'' visa?

(P.S. Against all my will - i still find myself applying for the latter!)

  8. Although I am not in NS - when i asked friends i was told ''cannot''

But i also, was successful with Kasikorn. Given a pass book and ATM card on the spot. Only needed passport and a deposit to open the account.

If i can remember i stuck 10k THB in to start with. Although my pass book has my name inside, the ATM card (Visa Electron) states PRIVELEGED MEMBER or somethng - i dont have it on me at the moment to check.

  9. Thanks Cuban, some good points raised.

Agree with you, up one route and down the other route is the obvious trip to do.

And you are spot-on, she will probably sleep most of the way as usual.

(probably not a bad thing, otherwise we will be stopping at every other roadside food stall)

A look around and stopover in Sukhothai seems the best plan. Will check out the links and threads you gave me - cheers!

  10. Next time in LOS i hope to visit Chiang Mai, and am looking at the idea of driving the trusty 'SUZI pickup from our house in Sa Keao (East Thailand, near Cambodia) around 900KM !!! The idea being, to stop off here and there on route along the journey. Taking in the sights.

Main towns we will pass through will be Phitsanulok, Uttaradit, (Route 11) or via Nakhon Sawan, Kamphaeng Phet, Tak (Route 1). So basically, maybe i am asking whats best - route 1 or 11?

Anyway looking at stopping overnight at one, as they should be around halfway for the trip.

Can any readers recommend any interesting places worth a look along these routes?

P.S. I need to plan my travels meticulously otherwise I will be at the mercy (again) of the Thai missus and an upside down map! And the journey will be long enough without a detour into Outer-Amphoe-land.

  11. Yes. NHJ talks about 2 times a double-entry tourist visa, 30-day extension of stay with each entry. This makes a total of 360 days, perhaps four days less. Two trips to Vientiane to get the visas, two border runs to activate the second entry of each visa, four extensions of stay.

But why do it the easy and straight-forward way if there is a complicated and expensive way? However, before talking about “wink-wink” we should perhaps wait for the OP to give us the details. Most of what he’s written so far in this thread is somewhat cryptic.
