  1. PS, I live in Chiang Mai and am not a tourist.

I used to buy T shirts that had that same /similar message when i lived ......in Hanoi-Saigon-Phnom P -

    Basra-Lagos-Riyadh-Cairo..etc.......but eventually gave up...waste of time... :)

The equivalent in Bournemouth was "I'm not a Grockle, I live here."

    What a great word - Grockle!!! :D

  2. What logical reason is there not to buy alcohol in the afternoon, and yet you can booze it up from supper time until 2AM in the early morning?
In England, it existed to supposedly get the workers back on the machines to make the guns and tanks for the war effort. It lasted about fifty years (not the war). Maybe the authorities know something we don't!!
  3. really whats the big deal if yr after a drink? Just plan ahead and keep a couple of beers in the fridge and stay home for a few hours.

But i can completely understand if yr out for lunch and would like a wine or whatever to have with it, or a tourist looking to kill a few.

It will be a bit annoying to tourists that would like a drink in the afternoon. My happy hour runs from 4-6 so that'll have to change.

I imagine it will be enforced for a while, some places will be offered the chance to continue serving (for a small fee) and eventually it will be forgotten about. Interestingly, the No Smoking in bars/restaurants policy was mostly accepted by owners and customers, but I never heard of anyone actually being fined or of any places being inspected.

  4. Not really into Fit-ba especially when Englands playing but must agree about the Old Bell.

Always pop into Kevins and the Elephant Bar and OMs and No.1 and UN and CM Sal and Flash Lts and Jucy Lucys on my first night in town but lately usually end up in the Bell....gotta be best value in town....

If you've already been to eight bars before you get there, I'm surprised that you even make it to Pedr's. Well done.

  5.

Hi Kevin, I was one of the guys enjoying that thread! Well done yet again for starting another great thread.
I assume that with more than 7,000 hits you weren't alone.  Has having a laugh been outlawed now? I know that being positive and happy irritates some people here, so maybe that's a clue.

Since there was no explanation to me (a PM would have been nice) then I can only speculate that it fell foul of some stupid rule somewhere (advertising? I just paid my dues today).

I only posted it because there were so many topics that were full of stupid bickering (what's wrong with those guys?) and I thought the place needed lightening up.

If they closed it with some sort of explanation, I could understand it, but delete it without a word to the author!  Not good form. :)

  6. One minute it was there, next minute it was gone!! What happened to my bitter-sweet story?

My guess is that it was too popular - last I saw it had about 7,000 views. I don't know why but my posts don't just get closed, they get deleted . I must be doing something right. :)

A little 'thank you' before it disappeared would have been nice.

  7. We've haven't come close to the 30 GB limit despite watching about an hour of streaming video per day and downloading MP3s from the NPR website daily. We've learned to do this in the mornings for best performance.

Amid all the carry on setting up the account, i forgot to ask how to keep an eye on usage. Going by a couple of posts here, it seems that one can monitor this from somewhere, or, perhaps it is just something that can be checked once the bill comes in?

If it's possible to check as you go along (and that would be handy), can one of you guys pleases point me to the area when this can be monitored?

    Thanks in advance

Click on the sixth Thai language heading (2nd from left) and it should come up there.

    AIS router setup

You could also take the sim out of the router and dial a number that I lost something like

#1233*# or whatever - ask them at the call centre Tel:  1175

  8. Three more posts with continued bickering and commenting on Crow Boy's post deleted.

    Last warning.

I think these guys need to hear some of my mother's words......

"what are you doing indoors?, it's a lovely day - the sun's cracking the flags outside. Go out and play and get some fresh air in your lungs. Moping around in here!! You should be outside playing."

  9. You know... double pricing is not something that is only found in Thailand.

Hawaii, for instance, has had a double pricing system for ever. Locals are given the coveted "locals" card to receive lower prices on everything...

I don't hear a lot of bitching about Hawaii...

    Swing and a miss.

No reason to complain about Hawaii as the discount is not looks based but based on residency. Other places in the States have the same residency policy. The big issue with Thailand is that many places... from the street food vendor to the top tier clubs will say... You pay more because you are not Thai. :) Why people cannot see this basic difference is beyond me.

    TheWalkingMan

So Hawaii, and other places in The States charges tourists more and you have no reason to complain. If paying more based on non-residency is okay(?) then doesn't that apply to Thailand? I don't have Thai residency and neither do most expats. I reckon that if you had Thai residency, irrespective of race you wouldn't have to pay the 300 baht fee at Fabrique. Same with most places. A lot of double-pricing here in Thailand is over-come by proof of residency (a work permit or Drivers licence) so what's the difference exactly?

  10. Hi Kevin, are you showing the full game as it doesn't finish until late? cheers

Yes. I don't normally close til about 1.30 so it's only a little bit later. I don't get bothered by clampdowns since I am a restaurant, so I don't expect problems.

unless getgoin decides to have a bikini wax :D

Half time entertainment? Worth thinking about. :)

  11.

Kevin... its only the farang who are charged? that's what the thread is about? about <deleted> places? farang charged x2 is pretty unfriendly? if I came into your illustrious pub (which I do now quite often) and you charged me x2 because I'm a Southend United supporter you would be SUU (Southend United Unfriendly). Fall in man...
I see your point, but all the same, the list isn't very long so far - Fabrique and Mandalay. Out of the thousands of bars, restaurants , stores and many other businesses the list currently stands at 2. The reality is that in Chiang Mai you are more  likely to be discriminated against positively rather than negatively. I'm sometimes embarassed by the special treatment I receive compared to the Thais around me, just because I am a Farang.

As far as I know, Fabrique is merely trying to keep Farang Riff Raff out and so long as you dress and behave properly then you are welcome. The 300 baht fee is an inconvenience, but I'm sure if you became a regular then you would probably not need to pay. Apparently, they did have some problems with Farangs and although their reaction may be innapropriate I can see what they are doing.

  12. this thread is about DOUBLE pricing which I have never seen in London!

back on topic please? this is about Thai Double Pricing - one price for Thais one price for YOU the farang - totally out of order

Technically, if a Singha is 3 pounds a bottle in London, that is more than double-pricing to a Thai - more like triple. :D

Sorry, for not taking it seriously, but a lot of us have been through this one loads of times already. I thought the topic was Farang Unfriendly places, not Double Pricing, although they may be the same.

The Fabrique example wasn't really double pricing if the fee was redeemable for drinks, surely? It was discriminatory, against Farang Riff Raff, but I'm not completely against that myself. :)

  13. Don't agree with 'being a visitor' after living here for 10 years, I think that's called 'expat', and a tourist is a visitor, someone who comes and goes without leaving footsteps. Expats run businesses here (some of the best running restaurants and other businesses in Chiangmai are owned by foreigners) we join NGO's, have Thai wives & children, build houses for families, send children to schools... Just in the local, generally xenofobic mind we will be strangers forever no matter our donations, and never get much position, but that is not in every country !

Just a very protective culture to deal with, no problem. I have a Filipina partner, 2 Burmese workers and I enjoy my job a lot :)

I don't think Thais are Xenophobic, just Nationalistic. Quite a difference.

Just to keep this off-topic...Wikipedia: Expat..

In common usage, the term is often used in the context of professionals sent abroad by their companies, as opposed to locally hired staff (who can also be foreigners).

I thought of myself as an expat when I was working in Saudi, but I don't think the same about my stay here. I am living here with my wife and family, and I have a house and business here. Since I don't intend to live in England again, I'm not an expat in my view.

I've met quite a few Expatriates who are also Ex-Patriots, which isn't true in my case.  :D

  14.

My guess is that most people understood what I mean by "rich" without the convoluted, in-depth explanation. :)

    That's a bit rich!! :D

Well said, Kevin. Very droll, but dont wind the man up. Its difficult keeping him on topic at the best of times. He does make some good points but when I qoute them he edits those out and reverts to snide remarks on grammar and style.

You once told me you like pissing people off on TV. I did not realise it was so contagious that he picked it up.

On topic, do you have any thoughts on Chiangmai in Chaos. Personally I do not think it is.

    caf

I wasn't winding UG up. I'm on his side.

I was merely playing with words. It's not quite right that I like pissing people off on TV. I amuse myself by taking the piss out of people who take themselves too seriously, or only see the negative side to living in Thailand.

You are on my 'ignore' list, but I made an exception since you were trying to include me in your endless attacks on UG.

  15. Just out of curiosity, what word could he/we use? After 20+ years I'd like to think of myself as a 'resident', but I'm not!! So what am I? (keep it clean) :)

Well just because we're not 'residents' in the legal sense, we are residents by virtue of the time we've spent here and the money put into the economy. I have no qualms calling myself a British national, currently a resident of Thailand - after all it's where I reside.

Not sure about scousers though. :D

Your title is not succinct or specific enough. I would have to use Scouse National, Resident of Thailand. Bearing in mind, that most posters here don't have their own teeth, that could quite easily lead to embarrasing mis-haps.  :D

Maybe we need to invent some sort of acronym.

Anyone who suggests SNOT (Scouse National Of Thailand) for me is banned from TRL, for life. :D

  16. I know you are not supposed to comment on mods but that comment was asinine. Some people are interested.

never noticed that, some people when they attain a moderism of power, just don't know when to use it in a correct manner.

I believe the comment was tongue in cheek. But in any case that is enough on that subject.

I understand that we are not allowed to comment on Moderators when they moderate, but are you suggesting that we can't comment on Moderators even when they aren't moderating - when they are making personal statements?  Maybe Mods should have two log-ins as someone suggested - one for Moderating and one for there own views. Worth thinking about.

  17. I agree with you that it is unfair, but we are visitors here. At least you can get drinks for the price of admission, instead of losing it all to pay a fee where you get nothing back like back home. That is Thai style and it is better than a lot of other countries and a lot of other places. Things are not perfect here, but they are pretty darn good. :D

Sorry UG, can you use another word instead of visitor?

If someone came to my house for 20 years and made generous contributions, they would soon lose that visitor tag. :D

Just out of curiosity, what word could he/we use? After 20+ years I'd like to think of myself as a 'resident', but I'm not!! So what am I? (keep it clean) :)

  18. You know... double pricing is not something that is only found in Thailand.

Hawaii, for instance, has had a double pricing system for ever. Locals are given the coveted "locals" card to receive lower prices on everything...

I don't hear a lot of bitching about Hawaii...

Any place that offers discount cards for locals is operating a double pricing system. I haven't heard of many locals complaining about that.

Farangs, or visitors in general, normally get a better service than Thais, so the one or two places that don't do that aren't worth getting upset or paranoid about. I'm still amazed, after all these years, by the fuss people make if I , as a Foreigner, turn up at an all-thai function. You get treated like an esteemed guest, even if you weren't invited!!

I'd rather accentuate the positive, as they say.  :)

  19. agreed , has to be th emost Farang unfriendly drinking establishment in town,,

the security are rude and abrupt,, even aggressive,,, they are off duty cops,,

when they got nasty with me after i refused to apy the 300 baht (we were carrying 3 bottles of booze in as well, which they wanted 200 each as corkakge) - i spoke to them in Thai and asked then what their names were,, they asked why ?,, i whipped out my phone and replied " so I can call your boss and ask him if its Ok for me to enter ??

noting the 'friendly ' looks on their faces we decided to leave any way ??

    avoid it like the plague..

The problem at Fabrique and some similar places is that they got too many Farangs that didn't know how to behave properly, so the 300 baht fee was to keep the Riff Raff out.

If you were bringing three bottles of booze in, and you weren't expecting to pay corkage, maybe they reckoned they weren't losing out anyway, espescially if it was Vodka or a spirit that doesn't require mixers.

  20. I do not think there will be a pardon but a "formula" might be put to him in strong enough terms and from a strong authority that allows neither he nor the "rich"* as Ukysses calls them to lose face. Many are still looking at this with Western eyes.

    caf

    * most powerful people are rich.

but it is the elite groups, not all of whom are rich, that one must consider. status and face are important here not simply wealth. but yes most people in power are rich

My guess is that most people understood what I mean by "rich" without the convoluted, in-depth explanation. :)

    That's a bit rich!! :D
