  1. Comes to mind today - Willie Nelson 'Nothing but blue skies.....'

(not the biggest fan, but heard it at a wedding)

I open the curtains and break into "Oh what a beautiful morning, Oh what a wonderful day...." (Oklahoma). :)

Sometimes, it's not technically 'morning', but nonetheless....

  2. Sad to hear you have lost 200baht. My condolences, you only made one mistake , Being a falang in Thailand . :) See The police are continuing to make friends and influence the Falang tourist to come to the land of smiles in ressesion.

Being a Farang was not the mistake, not knowing the law was. Driver and passenger must wear a helmet. You can choose to wear a helmet and have no problems or you can choose to not wear one and risk being stopped and fined. You decide.

Are you suggesting that Farangs should be exempt from the law? Or is it that you think it is some sort of persecution of Farangs? As far as I see it, Farangs are generally less likely to be stopped, but it is still a posibility.

  3. Incorrect change, tip, robbery, 10 baht, rude, torn, people taking rights of others, what Chiang Mai coming to? This kind of thing did not used to be a problem. The woman clearly should have been arrested and put in jail. Why didn't you call the police immediately?

That's why this forum is so popular - because of the funny posts like this. Hilarious. Well done. :D

I go into your pub now and again for a pint of Guinness .( good pint by the way ) .I pay with B200 .Why am i given the B20 change on a silver tray ?

    We have silver service?

    Actually, it's stainless steel. :)

  5. "Pardon me if the story is sketchy, but it was told to me at one sitting a reliable source, who was directly in touch with the man and his wife. ........

If could be just a run of terrible luck, or it could be some foul play by the wife. ........."

You don't deserve to be pardoned. If you are going to accuse or speculate publicly of somebody committing homicide or murder with no evidence whatsoever you deserve pity. Shame on you.

  6. Personally, I wouldn't have been waiting around for 10 baht change.

I usually tip anyway, so probably would have left another 20 baht besides. As the former-owner of a Thai restaurant catering to mostly Thais I can say that the notion that Thais don't tip is not true. Rubbish, in fact.

As someone once said "It's not about the Principle, it's about the money". :)

  7. I lived in Chiang Mai and did not have business for 10 years without being bothered by pollution. If it were not for all the harping on the internet, I would hardly ever even think about it for more a day or two in March every year. :D

okay so for the Record UG is NOT actually bothered by the pollution.

Please everybody make a note if you missed his previous 500 posts stating the exact same thing.

Don't forget me!! And the argument that it is because I/we have a vested interested is a bit simplistic.

First of all, how many people do you think are put off coming to Chiang Mai because of what is said on ThaiVisa? 10? 12? I don't think that what is said here affects my business any way, shape or form.

Secondly, don't forget I live here too, and I have family living here (a new baby on the way, to make me a grandfather for the second time!). If it was making me ill, it would concern me, especially if it was affecting my family and ....... my ability to win at tennis. :)

If it affects you, I'm sorry for you, but fortunately it doesn't seem to affect me.

FYI, I also thought that H1N1, and SARS was over-rated. :D

  8. However, you can overcome your super sensitivity (sometimes treated with antihistamines and antibiotics) by investing in some property here or, better yet, running a business that depends on tourism. Then you won't even notice the alleged air pollution that prompts some expats to complain and many Thais to wear masks.

That would explain it. I don't feel any ill effects of pollution, even when I'm running around a tennis court three days a week, because I own property and a business. Case solved. :)

  9. On the subject of pollution this is the Ping in front of Muang Mai market at 10:00 this morning:
I have a theory about what has happened here....

This pipeline was built about two years ago and joins up with the smelly canal that I mentioned in a recent post  (it runs North-South parallel to the river and ends up near the Duang Tawan Hotel in the Night Bazaar). The pipeline runs from the river to this canal (Mae Khaa canal) near the President Hotel.

I think it was intended as a means of diverting water from the Ping during a time of flooding. I think that after the big rains last night someone has opened the gate to flush out this smelly stream. As I have said before, that stream is a black stinking cess pool. It may be a bit cleaner today, but it has gone somewhere - now we know where.

  10. Ok Thanks, I'll try and find it again.

By the way by in front of D2, do you mean on the other side of the road?

If you come to the Red Lion I'll hold your hand and take you there.

Do you need directions to The Red Lion? :)

Kevin, surprised to read you didn't suggest he pop into the Red Lion for a free water and a chat about why it is the best pub in CM. :D

    CB

If I have to explain the difference between 'in front of' and 'on the other side of the road' I may not have the patience for lengthy conversation. Besides, there is a much bigger match on tonight (Wolves v Liverpool) so I may try out The Sports Bar myself. I'm not so sure if the clientele will be as interesting as the late-night arrivals at Kheuy Chiang Mai, so it may go to a vote.
  11. BlueyedThai: "More important than last nights storm(another thread),we have frogs seranading this morning. How about you?"

I haven't got frogs but I do have crabs. :D

In case you were wondering, the collective noun for frogs is a 'knot' or 'colony'. I don't know what the collective noun for crabs is - a 'scratch', maybe?

I only raise the topic because I overheard an American tourist last night talking about his visit to Tiger kingdom, where they have a 'bunch' of tigers, apparently. It is a 'streak' of tigers, of course, but that is in the English language. In the American version the collective noun for everything is a 'bunch' - they like to keep it simple. :)

  12. Yep the rain was most welcome here in Nong Hoy also. And I think we will have tomorrow also. What's your bet ?

I can't decide which is the most interesting post - the imaginatively titled "Rain" post by Blueyedthai, the equally imaginative "Rain" post by Gotlost (135 replies, 2634 views - well done that man!) or this one - a bit more imaginatively titled  "That Was A Nice Little Storm" (recently posted, so hard to say how it will fare). Maybe we could have a poll?

PS - with regards to "What's your bet?" - as curious as I am to know what the latest odds are, and what the gambling patterns may be vis-a-vis tomorrow's possibilities of precipitation, I think I should let you know that gambling is illegal in Thailand so it is probably against forum rules to discuss it.   :)  More's the pity. :D

  13. The Dragonfly Bar in Loi Kroh shows all the NFL Games that are on UBC.

Sat there last sunday till 4am watching the Vikings beat the Cowboys, aparently they will have a Super Bowl party as well.

The new Sports Bar in the Night bazaar is now open til 5am, I hear. It is on the top floor of The plaza (in front of D2 hotel) . They have about 20 TV's and a Projector.

Went looking for the sports bar the other day at around 2 am, couldnt find anything open, could you give more accurate directions please?

Spoke to the owner of the Dragonfly Bar, they will be showing the 2010 Super Bowl, and there will be free coffe and dougnuts for kick of as well. Saints vs Colts, could it get any better? I dont think so.

In front of D2 hotel on Changlkan Rd, night bazaar is a shopping Mall called The Plaza. On top floor is Sports bar. You may see some tuktuks advertising the place. I think they have a web-site - sportsbarchiangmai.com .I heard they are now open til 5am

  14. Just a renewed plug for the Tuskers darts night on Tuesdays.

The evening starts from 8pm but feel free to join anytime. We start with some games of 501 and then later in the evening play killer so everyone can join at once. It's a good, friendly, fun crowd.

Plus you get to pay 'Save Baht with a Dart' One throw per person at the board whatever they get that's their discount for the night. Anything from 1-60%!

    All very welcome.

    TRIPLE ONE :)

Technically, a 'good arrer', but the secret is - if you're gonna miss, miss more. It could have been triple 18 that way.

                             post-54542-1264400370_thumb.jpg

By way of explanation for non-darts players

  15. Btw, while i'm writing, I'm looking for a nice vehicle if anyone can help :D

    Aitch

    You forgot to mention 'cheap'!!!

It seems like everyone wants the best here, but the qualification is always 'cheap'. :D

Cheap apartment with good fast internet?  :D

Me Dad said "You get what you pay for, lad" :D Worth remembering.

PS: Did I tell you, by any chance, that he also said "Nothing in this world is free, lad"?   :)

  16. Hi, I can recommend the guy at Sridonchai road, passing the nitebazar at the Panthip Plaza traffic lights go left, 20 meters after the 7Eleven at left side, his salon is just accross the right side soi that is next to the large hotel, forgot the name.

He's really good, standard male haircut cost 150 bath. A very friendly gay with good feeling for fashion, he teaches too.

150 for a bath with a friendly gay guy?

  18. The World Health Organization speaks of a global obesity problem:

From the WHO website Obesity and overweight

    Facts

Globally, there are more than 1 billion overweight adults, at least 300 million of them obese.

    And apparently, it's all McDonald's fault.   :)

Every fat Thai or Chinese man is fat because they eat McDonald's. Fact. or so they say. Club Sandwiches can now be added to the list, apparently.  :D I only eat about 2 club Sandwiches a year, and never eat Burgers so at least now I know where the middle-aged spread came from. Cut them out and I'll be back to my fighting weight in no time.   :D

PS: The American's may have invented the Club Sandwich but the Earl of Sandwich played his part.

  19.

Maybe rude was the wrong word. Most unfriendly may be a better description. I went in there one night a Tuesday if I recall and the place was empty. Sat at the bar bought a beer and tried to strike up a conversation with the staff (one male and one female) They were to busy with thier own conversation. Finnished my drink and thought I would buy another was so hard to get thier attention so I just left. Wanted to buy one of those pics of Elvis and the royal family for my mum but the service was so bad.

I get the impression from what you say that you have some affiliation with the place. I didn't see any farangs working there.

I must say it is not the worst bar in Chiangmai but close. There is this bar near the Tapai Gate run by an irishman and I warn all farangs never set foot in that place. It's a small place do not know the name but I went in there with my nephew from Aus and a thai friend from lamphun. we bought our drinks from the bar and were sitting outside at the tables and after the 3 round this Irish prick comes up and starts demanding 30 baht service fee per drink that we did tip his worker. <deleted> we were paying 100 baht per beer as it was. A beer you can buy in tesco for 23 baht. Anyway about 3 mins later the local thai police turn up and come straight up to us. Seemed like a 2 minute chat between them and my thai mate a senior sergeant major with the thai police in lamphun and we had 3 free beers and an un opened bottle of wiskey on our table. Also an irish guy saying sorry for the error. We drank the beers took the whiskey back to my home and drank that. Apparently the 30 baht service charge is what he uses to pay his staff and the local police also get a cut.

The best bar area in chiangmai is out towards San sai behind Carefour a rapidly growing area and has a real cosmopolitan feel. Multicultural. Great entertainment very relaxed and cheap prices. Has far more going for it than the inner city area. If you have an affiliation with the red lion place you should suggest that they expand out that way but hey they will have to conform to the friendly enviroment to succeed.

Very interesting post, well done. I hope you are going to hang around, this forum has been a bit quiet lately, it looks like you could liven it up.

  20. hmmm, guess its not big here in Chiang Mai... Pub Crawl it is!!!
I just saw an ad for Kangaroo Bar (they need waitresses if you're interested) at Rimping. They may have an Australia day celebration? I think it is on Chang Klan Rd, just past the lights at Panthip plaza, on the left.
  21. Hope the wifi is faster than the service. My BLT took over a 45 minutes to arrive, despite there were less than 10 people in the restaurant, and it arrived cold.

The coffee tasted awful, served without milk/creamer, which i had to ask for... The Old Thai lady who appeared to be running the show constantly complained about how busy she was (10 customers in the bar - of which they had all already been served!!!) and then proceeded to mutter some pretty insulting Thai swear words when i reminded her i was still waiting for my sandwich 45 minutes after ordering it. I guess she didn't realize i speak pretty good Thai :)

This was just after Christmas 2009, and to be frank, i've had better service and better food at the McDonalds across the street.

Maybe next time i will choose a different venue for my mid-day breakfast!

I have to agree it is not a very good place in CM very rude people working there, will never go back. I think the best bars and social area in chiangmai is in the vicinty Carefore an absolutly great little area very friendly people in all establishments.

An interesting post that, to be honest, I don't quite understand. If you had a problem with one of the staff, I might believe it (maybe they were having a 'bad' day), but 'very rude people' suggests more than one. As I have said before, we have comment sheets on every table and if there is one comment that is most common it would be 'Very good, friendly staff'. I reckon 90% of comments say that. Not much I can do, but say sorry for your bad experience. I addressed Wolfie's problem already.
