1.
No first hand experience, but a work collegue (a Brit.) failed miserably. They wanted a WP3 (WP receipt thingy) and said they would only issue a single entry even with one.

He got a tourist visa in the end

Not high on the "friendly" list, and Mumbai is not the worlds nicest city at least near the airport (Andheri), south end (Churchgate) by the Gateway to India is fine though.

Obviously YMMV.
they just applied the rules the normal way, a WP3 is needed for single entry and work permit for multi entries.

  2. hi all of you,

thanks for your posts and taking attention to my problem.

first i'd like to tell you i'm posting this message from my line in my new house, so i had a happy solving.

here's the rest of the story for those of you who are interested :

i finely found the eletric post where the cables are attached, the "TOT tech" look on the left, they were 10 meters from his head on the right side...

i went the next day to soi 6 in maenam, the employees seem to be surprised to see someone going there directly as the main office is the tesco office.

i asked if someone could speak english as my thai is too limited to expose the problems met previously, a girl said yes a little, in fact her level is a lot better than the tesco office, she could understand everything i said and take care of my explanations, unlike the tesco office.

funny thing no mention of "sorry it's full in your area".

for the information i took internet on my company name, and it did require a new set of all company papers not older than 90 days, copy of the passeport, company stamp and i had the copy of the ID card of the owner and her tabien baan(those were not signed btw).

the technician does show up with a clear english, everyday conversation and technical vocabulary, i asked him when it was possible to come and check , i was afraid of the anwser as they offer a promotion and must be very busy, he answered let's go now.

arrived at the home, the owner is one of his biggest friend, we went to the back of the house to have a look at the cable, unfortunately he told me those cables belong to TOT.

so i asked him if it was possible with TOT, he said yes adsl is available, so i called the TOT tech as i had his phone number, when i said the name, both of them knew him personnaly.

after a short communication between the two techs, the answer came, it's full in my area, seems the easy excuse when they want to refuse someone for any reasons...

situation went bad at that time, but the owner and the TTT tech discussed, apparently she had a TTT phone number not used and disabled, so the tech told me i'm a lucky guy, he'll come back tommorow to make the install at 10 o'clock at the soi 6 office.

i saw one of the girl of the tesco office there, she remembered me and was surprised to see me there, she almost stop to breath when i told her that here internet was available and not from the main office at tesco...

they came the next day, stayed for 5 minutes then went away without any reason, i called him and said i'll be back around 6 o'clock... as it's almost dark at that time i had doubts, he called me at 17h50 saying it's for tommorow morning.

the morning passed and i went to TTT soi 6, a saturday afternoon, found another tech not able to speak english, we managed an appointment for the afternoon.

they came, but they have no tools, just a phone able to listen frenquencies and a tone pulse emmiter they connecto the TOT cable.

they came and went back a few times, after three hours of work, the cable was ok outside but not inside, i proposed to make a hole into the wall and put a connector, they don't have the tool to do it so the cable is passing between the window.

they came back to the office to send the synchro signal, it was'nt working so one came here and after a one more phone call between them, it was all set. :o

total cost : few phone calls, gasoline and 832 bath for setup and the first month of adsl.

    my conclusion of my story:

avoid TOT, they want to charge you for a new cable while the state of the cable is good, the plastic was almost like new and the copper wasn't oxidated( i checked myself), they want you to install a new cable and when it seems to hard , the tech states it's not possible, not to mention they pay for the first 300 meters of cable 7.49 bath/meters but the installation fee is 3 bath/meter, the first 300 are not free for the installation...

the tesco office seems to be out of knowledge/will and their english ability is extremely limited when it comes to explain a technical situation, not to mention the 4 days of wait to get the "sorry it's full in your area" wich wasn't true.

the soi 6 office is definately a good one, the staff can speak english, the tech also and it's very good as he's THE man when it comes to connect you.

i got a 2 meg connection, here are the values of the line for those curious about how the cable was too old:

    noise margin upstream: 23 db

    output power downstream: 19 db

    attenuation upstream: 21 db

    noise margin downstream: 27 db

    output power upstream: 12 db

    attenuation downstream: 36 db

as long as the attenuation remains under 50 DB the line is considered stable, so it can handle more.

sorry for this long post but i think this experience may help other people in the future.

  3. just because she says so doesn't mean she's really working for bkk airways, this is a part of the old story :

i don't work i'm poor, i want money for my family or i'm working for an employer but the salary is too low/any other reason or i'm here since two weeks on holiday ...

it's always funny to hear and see their faces changing when you tell them it's lie :o

  4. Hello,

There's already a phone line in the house, but not working anymore(i guess) because no one is paying for it, it was a couple of foreigners that lived previously there, as it's not a shop, i think they took it for internet but i'm not sure, i need to contact the owner of the house to be sure.

But i'm in trouble to get an adsl line , the distance is not a matter as it's only 1 kilometre from the mainroad inside the land and only 600 meters from the TOT DSLAM.

At first i went to the maxnet office in tesco to ask if could get internet, i had to draw a map on the paper, it seems the small office is not able or willing/understanding what is to check with the adress if it's in their database, this would help a lot as no need to come and install a new cable, saves some time.

i was asked to come back the next day to get the answer, i went two days later to hear, come back two days later...

it was monday to friday, just to get the answer, i came back and the answer wasn't still there, so she called their office in maenam soi 6, the answer came in 2 minutes, not possible, it's full already.

it's very surprizing as they launched a new promotion that is valid until 31 august.

so i went to TOT in nathon, the guy assured me i could get it but the installation price was high as hel_l, according to the map I draw and the technician's map skills, they told me i would need 800 meters of cable for 6950 bath installation included, i did argument i had a phone line already and ask if they could check for a previous history of billing at that adress, with no success.

i asked the technician to come and check how long the cable has to be, 600 meters finally but he said he can't install the cable because there's no electric post, the house has electricity and an existing phone line, he didn't wanna have a look, the cable was too old he said....

my thai is very bad but we could understand each other, i would have liked to do a joke saying it's not optical fiber but simply a pair of copper wire...

Tommorow i'm going to the TT&T office in soi 6, see if it's available or not for the reason the girl told me.

    now come the questions :

does any of you has adsl in soi3 or know someone that has it?

does this kind of matter happen often when you wanna take a connection?

wich other providers do exist in samui if any?

does any of you know someone at TOT or TT&T that could help sort this out?

thanks a lot for reading this long post and thanks in advance for any help/advices you could provide.

  5.
Try Lao Kaow, that is cheaper........
haha :D on a side note, they produce all alcool from rice, like sansom, all the whiskies and add color, flavor and water to create the product needed but why don't they produce sake?

  6.
, thailand has enough girls well paid, well educated, speaking english very well to fall into the trap of greedy girls.

i must admit finding such girls in samui is pretty hard , but in bangkok it's very easy,

As I have read on this forum and been told by a Thai, educated Thai girls with good jobs aren't interested in farang men. The exception is if you get them over 30 and still single. At that point a farang is better than being an old maid.

That's just not true - sorry! The fact is many educated Thai girls are interested in farangs. If you are in a relationship and the other half starts asking for money very early on...how are you ever going to know that she/he is genuinely interested in you? Why just because you spend time with someone should you be expected to bump up their salary - they have survived fine of this previously haven't they? My boyfriend earns nothing yet never asks me for money - why is it OK for shop girls? It's glorified prostitution and there is no defence. For most girls the initial first few dates are exciting times and to expect payment if you are genuinely interested in somebody is ludicrous! Further down the line in a secure and happy relationship, there is more expectation within Thai society to help a partner or their family out financially if it is possible, but to have to do this right from the beginning rings very large alarm bells.

you're right, every tastes are in nature, some girls don't like foreigners while others are fascinated by foreigners.

we have physical differences, face, eyes and hair for some of them we're the man they dreamed off for some we look simply ugly :o

just have a look at tv, how many actors/actresses are half thai half foreigners, in some way thailand is fascinated by foreigners.

  7.
Thanks NHJ
By the way, what did you mean by you have never met anyone working honestly during the day? Do you mean all shop people etc? Or did you mean at night? Thanks for the clarification, and your insights.
sorry if it's not clear sometime, english is not my main language.

i was speaking about night meeting aroung the greenmango/reggae area, personnaly i almost never met a girl having a normal job and going to enjoy the dance/music/mood in the clubs.

all the girls that i spoke to were either freelancers, bar girls once i met a massage girl(with happy ending) and a hair cutter but that's all.

one more thing, i would say 98% of the girls hunting are coming from issan, having a baby already, i guess you know the rest...

  8.
No marriage for me Tommyj4 but thanks for the wishes! By the way you were right about her father. She tells me he cries himself to sleep every night on three tall Changs. Lightweight. Least he could do with my money is drink six!

NhJ, you are right on with the money. I spent a little to get my answer. But no more. Just come for fun now. But if I do decide to settle down I'll do my hunting in bangkok. Or maybe Chang Mai.
i met thee girls from chiang mai here in samui, two were working here, the other came on holiday(a real holiday not the old story :o ), all the three had a normal job very well paid and a wonderfull level of english, it was a pleasure to discuss with them with no language barrier on subjects like global warming etc etc...

good luck and have fun m8

  9. your story seems very classic, the girl certainly has other foreigner in the background coming when you were supposed to leave.

as i say to every friend that come to visit thailand, run away from people asking you for money, thailand has enough girls well paid, well educated, speaking english very well to fall into the trap of greedy girls.

i must admit finding such girls in samui is pretty hard , but in bangkok it's very easy, samui is a touristic place with the kind of bisuness to entertain the visitors and low salary people (wich barely went to school) that came here to look for money no matter the way they get it.

a good relationship is never based on money but on feelings or matching points, making a gift (not houses or expensive phones) is better than giving money.

As i heard when i was a kid, give a fish to someone he'll eat for one day, teach him how to fish, he'll eat for the rest of his life, giving money to someone is creating a bad addiction and thus changing the relationship.

of course if someone asks you for money to buy a bottle of water when it's 30° degrees outside, don't apply what i said previously :o

  10.
I know at least 3 REPUTABLE girls...wont say exactly where they work but you would be very suprised that go to Mango etc.....almost everyday......how do most of these shop girls on 6k-10K a month have 12k phones, motorbikes(not rented or on the drip) & a little gold...think about it....
interesting thing, i know a lot of people around samui and i like to speak to people (in thai language) when i'm going out(no matter what gender or sexual orientation) and i never met a girl that is working honestly during the day.

i don't say this doesn't exist as i know it does, you have exeptions like everywhere and for every purposes.

the "respectable" girls that i know mainly working in bkk airways, hospital or pharmacy do sometime go to the greenmango but to enjoy, their salary covering very well their expenses(around 30k/month for the two last professions)

  11. hello,

i saw a reportage showing wine produced in thailand with grappes raised in thailand, they show a wine from chonburi.

i search on internet about thai wines and i found this website wich represents the six biggest or only wine makers here in LOS, their website is : http://thaiwine.org/

my question is where to buy such products at local prices in koh samui or suratthani?

    thanks.

  12.
To answer the op's original question....have you ever been up soi mango or the reggae pub at 10pm... ghost town's....but as soon as all the shops shut and the pharmacy's and the hairdressers (and whatever else is doing business in Chaweng), then give 30 minutes for a quick change of clothes and magically the discos fill up with sexy girls all looking for ferang's to "dance" with.
So make up your own mind where these girls come from.
HL
wrong, the girls you see in the greenmango are 99% prostitutes, the girls working in pharmacy, optical and other respectable shops, i mean not hair beauty salon for prostitutes or massage salon don't go out to those places as they have to come back to work the next day.

exeption to be made at thailand offical days off or special events like new year.

the girls coming are mainly freelances, after 1h30, the bar girls are coming and so on everydays :D

  13.
If you apply for a work permit you have to pay tax. Does anyone know how much tax has to be paid? According to the work permit and application you have to have a monthly income of at least 50 000 baht a month.

I own my own company. A few years ago I hired myself. In order to get a work permit I had to pay myself 60,000 baht per month Also I had to hire four Thai people at 5,000 per month each, and pay social security taxes on them and on myself, plus payroll taxes on myself. All in all I figure that work permit cost me around 25-30 thousand baht per month. Also the company had to shell out money for a licensed accountant to certify the books.

I can't be sure of the exact figures now, because the law changes. For example this thread says the minimum wage for Americans is 50,000 baht now, not 60,000. But what gets you is not the taxes, it is the expense o complying with Thai corporate law, which is designed for Hewlett and Packard, not Charlie and Nok.

it depends for now you don't need anymore thai employees in bangkok and if your accountant knows the right persons at the labour department in your region, the four thais employees will never be needed.

    this is my case.

  14.
you can apply for the thai driving license wich is not possible with a tourist visa.

Sorry, this is wrong. You can do that as long as your "residence" is in thailand.... Usually a simple paper from your embassy as long as you live more than 6 months per year here (details may vary, I am french).

Exactly what I have done.
rules may differ as usual from places to places, but here in samui, it's clearely written only non-immigrant visa.
