1.
Greg, can you summarise any important changes between the old and new acts?

Simon
as far as i could read, four majors changes are present.

    1) any company willing to hire a foreigner will have to pay an amount to a deportation fund, if the employee has to be deported, the remaing amount covering the different fees related to the deportation will be covered by the fund itself, the boss will not have to pay the rest.

    2) any company willing to hire a foreigner without appropriate qualification will have to pay a fee.

    3) any company hiring a foreigner that doesn't have his permanent residency in thailand will have to pay a fee.

    4) the work permit will be issued with a validity of two years instead of one actually.

  2. a gram of alcohol is 9 calories, a beer is usually 5% of alcohol wich density is lower than water, 798grams of alcool fit a bottle of 1 liter of water

for 100ml of beer, you have around 4 grams of alcool = 36 calories

beer usually contains sugar coming from malt called maltose wich is a high glycemic index a lot more than regular sugar wich is 65, maltose is 105 so it's absorbed very fast , usually you have 3% of sugar 3x4=12 calories

normally 100ml of beer at 5% is around 48 calories.

a bottle of whisky at 40% as long as there's no sugar added inside to create a special flavour is around 2000 calories.

I know an American who mailed his passport back home every year for a few years in a row. The thing is, you will have no exit stamp or entry stamp. Won't this look strange and cause problems? I've lost touch with this guy, but it is what he did.

The Consulates/Embassies are under the MFA, some will issue you a Visa even they see that you are still in Thailand.

However the Officer of the Thai immigration will, if he notice it, invalidate/ignore the Visa.
He can not cancell the Visa , but he will remark that he Visa has be unlawfully obtained.

The person will be allowed entry based on the current rules.
your answer sounds very logic and normal regarding laws BUT why are law firms that have a good reputation like siam-legal do offer such illegal services?

  4.
The visa will not be legal if issued while you are in Thailand. If issued while you are in a third country it will be a gray area but if you are found without passport you could be in a jail area.
thanks, i was doubting about the fact to send the passeport back home, i did read some contradictous advice on the forum regarding that matter, especially as siam-legal is providing such services at that page :

    http://www.siam-legal.com/EU-Visa/thailand...ear-visa-eu.php

  5. Hello,

I'll have to buy a new visa non-B as mine does finish the 20th july, this time as i have a work permit, i'd like to get a one year multi entries.

I did mail NJ bookcentre, banana guest house and jim's place n penang, all three have the same answer, i'll not get it, the consul is once again gone wild according to jim's mail.

I did call kota bharu, they would like to see my work contract, i told them i'm my own boss, makes no difference so guess i'll have to sign my own contract of employment but i'm not so sure about them to issue non-b multi entries.

last call was made to my hometown in belgium, as exepected, the consul told me there's not a single trouble to issue my visa non-B multi entries one year if i mail them the required documents, pictures, someone can go and pay the visa and take my passeport the next day and send it back to me.

what would be your advice regarding my matter?

    thanks in advance.

  6. Hum i don't get why you would want a residence permit as it cots 200.000 bath for the government fees, requires 3 years of tax paid, takes a long time(1year i think) to be approved.

f you wanna stay long term in thailand at low cost and not depending of someone(marriage) or using tourist's visa, setup a company you'll get non-b visa without any trouble(90 days of stay sngle entry unless you have a work permit) and if you wanna do bisuness everything is ready.

  7.
You need an exemption letter only if you are trying to satisfy some rather infantile TV members. Thais understand the situation!
it's true it might infantile but the law is made like that, even if the thai autorithies or particulars understand, if something goes wrong you might being prosecuted according to the law.

the new government should have a look at the working act for alien and change some rules to the good way as they did for tax, number of shareholders etc...

  8. i opened my bank account at the kasikorn in front of the macdonald in samui, i had no visa at that time and no question was asked, it was in january.

definately a good agency as krung thai bank did require at least a visa stamp while all the others were asking for a work permit.

  9. the seller doesn't need to go with the buyer as long as you got both papers signed by him, no need to have them filled in also, the employee will do it.

take the letter confirming the adress from the immigration, 500 bath while it's free everywhre else in thailand, if you bring your pictures it's still 500 bath but it will save you some time alternatively, make copies of your work permit if you have one as they can be used to confirm your adress.

also bring photocopies of the first page of the passeport with your picture and the actual visa including the departure card.

you'll have to unmount the bike to allow the employee to check the serial number on the frame, he'll provide the required tool.

the change of owner as long as all taxes have been paid is normally 225 bath.

  10. i just had a phone call today to the consulate of my country, they do give non-B multiple entries valid for a year as long as the paperwork is ok including the copy of the work permit and i have the guarantee it'll be issued. no stress anymore with those visa to get outside of thailand.

i can apply by mail also and a third person can go and pick up my passeport.

the permanent residency is a simple rip off that will cost you 200.000 THB just for the government fees, by exemple permanent residency in japan costs 2.500 bath.

200,000 baht is nearly $7,000 canadian dollars. That is crazy. Guess just renewing a visa is the best way to go.

if married to a thai national, it is half the price.

But it is academic anyway, as you'll need three years of tax returns to be in the position of being eligible.
does anyone know why they ask so much compared to evolved asian countries like japan in my example?

Normally permanent residency is just a paper change of your main place of residence from your country to the other, in my country(belgium) after you worked for 5 years you obtain automatically the permanent residency and so you can ask for belgian nationality aswell.

  12.
It is highly unlikely that you would get Permanent Residentsy or Thai Citizenship.
It requires at least 3 years of Income Tax payments and you will not be working.

If I can live there 12 months at a time, and renew once a year, then I guess I could
care less if I get permanet residency unless it would have some major advantages for
me that I cannot see at the moment?

the permanent residency is a simple rip off that will cost you 200.000 THB just for the government fees, by exemple permanent residency in japan costs 2.500 bath.

  13. it's true that your link is not working, it's connected to the ip 75.125.14.39 while all my working links are related to video.google.com(72.14.235.102) maybe they did start banning also the ip of the youtube servers.

can someone with thai reading abilities can go the forum www.adslthailand.com and have a look why they're banning youtube?

  14. i think another coup should'nt happen, people did vote truely or bought vote but no matter this government was elected freely.

if people don't like the way the goverment is acting, they can protest like the taxi did for gasoline and next time maybe people will take more interest in the politics if they're not happy with the actual government and so will vote after reflexion.

you can use www.keepvid.com and download your video.

Trying to use www.keepvid.com to download one of the "sorry, not available" YT clips this is the censorship message I get:

The website declined to show this webpage
HTTP 403
Most likely causes:

This website requires you to log in.

What you can try:

Go back to the previous page.

More information
This error (HTTP 403 Forbidden) means that Internet Explorer was able to connect to the website, but it does not have permission to view the webpage.

For more information about HTTP errors, see Help.

as i said in my post you need to use the high quality download link as the other is blocked.

So, after reading your problems now... I see only one explanation : YouTube messed it up. And has lost control over its filter system.

However, I do think that the thai authorities -again- are playing with their ban system, and obviously too : they messed it up.

I think you've got it right. I thought too about this being possibly a filter initiated originally by YT to please the Thais and now gone awry on some Thai ISP servers like TOT Pattaya. I was in BKK a week ago, where I have True 4MPS, and, strangely enough, I got a couple of these "sorry, no longer available" messages but a retry would nevertheless stream the clip OK. Indication of a "bug", isn't?

i was wondering why since few weeks i guess, i had that message of video no longer available in a second while my browser is telling me it's waiting for date to come from youtube.

the "&fmt=18 " hack is in fact the video in high resolution, that's why it's slower than usual, i guess their block comes from the url format as adding something after is not affected by the block.

for those of you who still want their video and see them, videodownloader extension of firefox is not effective BUT you can use www.keepvid.com and download your video, you'll need a FLV player or if you have ffdshow installed on your computer you can read them by the media player, currently only the high resolution videos can be downloaded.

  17.
Your WP would be for the job of farang manager or farang customer services etc. Their might (likely) be a requirement for there to be 4 Thai staff to support your WP, and yes they do check and take copies of the Thai employee's ID cards. You will need to pay tax etc. on a salary of 50,000 Baht (depending on the country that you are from). The labor office and immigration carry out random checks to see if you are at the address given as your place of work from time to time. To extend your WP from the three months given on first application you will need to present company accounts to show that the business is in fact making money. If the company is a new venture you can make a loss for between 3-5 years depending on the structure.

hum this is not correct.

as you are married with a thai citizen, only two employees are needed as your wife is one of them, you may want to employ her sister or a friend of her, no need to employ him/her really, just be sure that he/she's there or available IF the labour checker comes to knock at your door.

the minimum salary of 50k is only valid if you want an extension of stay of 1 year(no need to go out every 90 days) and will require you to report your adress every 90 days at the immigration office, for this, they will need to see the social security and salary paid of two employees as you are married.

a salary of 30k is usually accepted in all provinces but is always at the discretion of the labour department, take your information with them before you apply.

  18.
I have to do it super quickly as the old Visa is out and my 3rd tourist stamp is up quickly. Now I have all my Visa App papers nicely arranged by a lawyer and a company that is sponsoring me. Do you think it's better to arrive early week and hang out in case there are snags in the process ? Or could I go in on a Thurs night, drop papers on Fri am, then pick up on Mon morning and head back ? How do those with experience usually do the routine ?
You stay anywhere near the place that's nice, cheap, convenient travel to/from Emabssy as well ?

Thanks for seasoned advice in advance!

you'll need to arrive before 10pm in chulia street, go and see the visa agent NJ, he does charge you a small amount of money 25RM but you won't have to go to the consulate and so be able to enjoy your rest, you'll also be able to buy a ticket from penang to hatyai for 25RM

if you wanna stay on the cheap after giving the papers to NJ, continue to the end of the street as if you were going to the mall, before the end of the street have a look on your right, you'll see a hotel, it's managed by indians you can get decent accomodations for very cheap 15RM if i remember correctly.

if you wanna try a decent indian restaurant, still while going to the mall, just after the corner on the left, you'll see the yasmine restaurant, you'll smell the curry flavour, i stop there all the time and order chicken masalla with indian rice 4.5RM you way want to try the iced tea milk there also.

if you decide to go to the mall, you should visit the giant shop in the underground, it's a food shop with a lot of foreign products with malaysian prices or the same prices as in the country of origin, i was able to find my favourite belgian chocolate for the same price as in my country. :o

    i hope that'll help you

  19.
is health service cheap in thailand?

A thai friend went to the nationnal hospital in nathon(koh samui) for a complete blood check up , they charged 3000 bath, kinda expensive as in most modern countries with social security it will not cost more than 10 euro or even free.

Must have gone to a private hospital which can charge what it likes - Govt hospitals are much cheaper or free.

thanks for the info, do those cheap rates also apply to foreigners?(in my case i have a work permit if that does any difference)
