  1. Not just Thai food but a range of recipes. Over the past week I have made some spicy Mango chutney, Chilli apple and date chutney, Spicy chilli jelly,a batch of Naan breads and some crumpets. I also knocked up some very nice duck pate. As well as some Thai curries, Malaysian curries, Indian curries and of course the monthly Sunday roast dinner. If I do say so myself I am a bit of a Gordon Ramsey in the kitchen !rolleyes.gif

Not in the results of my cooking but there tends to be lots of cursing and swearing coming from the kitchen when I am having a session whistling.gif

I find it a very pleasant way to spend a day thumbsup.gif

TB - if you have the time and inclination I would appreciate reading your recipes !

  2. Good morning Forum Support,

Regarding listening to Pattaya 103 FM accessed by the tv.com website.

I have two PC and hard drives. On the new one I can listen to this radio programme online. But on the older one I cannot access and the response it to download the correct media player.

Can you please specify which media player I should use?

    Many thanks,

  3. Dr Seree Senaratana is a general surgeon who is often highly recommended.

However, he only works at Ram (since 1993) and I'm not sure about laparoscopy.

It will only cost a few hundred baht to speak to him for starters though, as I'm sure you'll get at least two opinions.

    Here's his CV

    http://www.chiangmai...CV th/Seree.pdf

    Edit: Speaks excellent English.

Yes. I agree. Surgeon Seree does come highly recommended.

In my own experience - he has operated on me for a hernia and serious abdominal surgery following chronic pancreatis.

He is very competent, and as you state has excellent English.

  4. Funny,

I have posted before about English speaking radio stations and music in CM.

But today after the new arrival of a HD and compatible software I was able to access this station as per the flag on the the top of this tv.com page.

Admitted not all of the music, dribble, or advertising is to my full liking but great background and access to updated news media.

    I am a fan.

  5. Asia books didn't have it I think I have ordered it from DCO.

The amount of applications and pay pal not sure what is happening.Live in one country credit card from another country born in another country. See if it gets here Monday.

Just checked it is on it's way. I am a slow reader and a book that size unless it is really interesting will take me over a week.

Good luck... I hope that you enjoy the book...

  6. Could you please post a review after you have read it?

    Thanks!

I have the book. It was an interesting read when I first settled in Thailand. The book was published in 2002, however the author (Steve Van Beek) writes,"It took me 13 years to write this book". So, if you are interested in reading how things used to be, it is a great read. If you are looking for current information, not so much.

I did enjoy the book and found some of the history quite fascinating.

    Subjective Review

At 429 pages this book is quite a tome and as reported by Siverhawk took over 12 years to write. It accounts for Steve's adventures in the mid-80's when he managed to have a boat constructed and went as far as possible in search of the beginning of the River Ping. The story relates of his adventures in paddling the boat down from there to the sea - the hill tribes villagers and other characters that he met and a different Thailand than many of us know today.

I agree that the book is fascinating and compelling reading. More so if you have an interest in either/and/or non-fiction Thailand, boating and thriving on challenge. It also gives an insight to many words, proverbs and phrases of Thai language, some north Thai dialect, that I was unaware of.

I thoroughly enjoyed it and have learnt a great deal.

  7. I am currently reading

    Slithering South

    By Steve Van Beek

Its quite a tome of a book and I understand took twelve years to write. It concerns Steve's adventure in having a boat built and then taking it as far as possible to the beginning of the Ping River to paddle down to the sea. His encounters with the various hill tribes along the way and some of the characters that he met.

It is based upon his trip in the 70's and no doubt much has changed. But it is an interesting insight into the Thailand that he found.

If you enjoy non-fiction books about Thailand and boats - I think that you will enjoy this book.

    That should of course read:

  9. I've a book, Blue Book Of Coastal Vessels Thailand that was given to Betty and Ben Alexader from Barbara and Roy Evans in Bangkok on December 1967.

Incredible detail of types of boats in Thailand and surrouding countries. Pages are half in English and half in Thai. Tells how do detect what people could be smuggling and where to look. What kind of fish found and where to fish for them. What to use to catch them.

But really 100's of photos of boats.

    Ah Mogoso....

Don't tempt me ! I have just had a look at the details of that book and it looks grand!

My heart is by the coast but my family and livelyhood are in the North ! Interesting that it dates back to 1967.

    Thanks

  10. It looks like a great read. I am going to try to place a order at Asia books.

    Hello HD,

Did you manage to place the order and get the book? If so I would be interested in hearing your own review.

In my case, thanks to MES, DCO came through with the goods and I received a copy within 3 working days. It is quite a 'tome' but at chapter 4 I am thoroughly enjoying it.

and yes 'zzdocxx' i'll do my best at a review once I have finished reading the book.

  11. Siripat section (the private section at CMU hospital) gives good care, but the public part is cheaper and often you will have the same doctors.

Regarding price, that totally depends on your condition and subsequent needs.

Good points not all strokes ave the same effect on people. I had a aunt who was paralyzed on one side of her body and had a very difficult time in talking. Of course she had to be pushed around in a wheel chair. My Father died of a stroke.

Many people take baby aspirin to help prevent a stroke it acts as a blood thinner makes the blood less likely to clot.

There is stronger medicines for this but they need a constant check on at least once a month. Mine is Wharfin Every month my doctor checks it and some times has to adjust it.

    Slightly off topic, sorry,

But I recently spent yet another week in RAM with serious digestive problems. When examined at Emergency, before being admitted - one of the questions that they asked was which medicines do I take. I gave them the list which included taking a baby aspirin every day. They were aghast and asked me why. I told them I understood that it 'thinned' the blood and may prevent a possible stroke. They shook their heads.

I later asked the consultant about this and he also was adamant about someone, presumably with gastric disorders, taking this medicine. I have always known of the adverse affect that normal dosage aspirin may have on the stomach but I did not consider a baby aspirin, after breakfast, constituting a problem.

  12. Another, and possibly cheaper, option is the Payon Dental Clinic - Dr. J

    http://www.thaivisa....st#entry5651287

After reading the above recommendations I have now attended on several occasions and found ithe clinic fine in terms of competence, price and parking.

Check with poster elektrified, he very recently reported a really painfull dental experience.

    Regarding Payon Dental Clinic

I would be interested to hear about Elektrified's experience at Payon. I have performed a search on 'Payon' and am unable to find the post. Similarly, no doubt to my own ignorance of retrieval, I have looked at Elektrified's recent posts but can only display one page.

Still, I can only relate my own experiences there, which were very positive, and I chose Payon after several recommendations on this forum. Ultimately I suppose we must take as we find.

  13. Sorry about the small point size. Not sure how that happened.

"What do you think is the best - aluminium entrance doors or wood? Remember that the doors are set back from the outside of the house and covered by the porch. My wife " My wife lek worry about wind driven rain and doors swelling up?"

    Any thoughts or suggestions?

  14. Hi,

My apologies if this seems a simple question but I have now knowledge of building and construction.

My friend in the UK has arranged for the family of his Thai wife to build a house some 16 kilometres out of Khon Kaen. The house is now well underway and the time has come to place the doors and windows. I have received this message from him.

    Thanks for the post.

Initially I was just looking for some background, not necessarily current. Now, the more that I hear about the book the more that I wish to read it for pleasure.

  16. Could you please post a review after you have read it?

    Thanks!

Sure. I am not sure though as to the quality or as to how objective that might be. To be honest, I had never heard of the book until I started to do some research on cruising down the Ping River. I write for my own amusement and and thought to pen a story - a Thai version based loosely on 'Three Men In A Boat' by Jerome. Google revealed this book and the reviews were so good that it interested me enough to try and obtain a copy.
