  1. You will need the original and it needs to be the bigger one with both parents name on not just the mini version.

A 'certified copy' issued by the current registrar counts as an 'original'. You can order a fresh certified copy online.

    Thank you for the replies

I am married to the Thai mother.

I have a colour copy of the bigger birth certificate.

Having the original sent here worries me a little................ anybody know where i can get a "certified copy" of my birth certificate here in Bangkok?

  2. Greetings learned ones.

I will be applying for my 6 month old son's first British passport in Bangkok next month.

I am British and the mother is Thai.

    My burning question is this!

Do i need to supply MY original birth certificate to do this?

or will a colour photo copy be acceptable??

Hoping to avoid having my original birth certificate sent through the mail.

Any tips on what i can expect will be appreciated

    Thanks

  3. Hi Folks,

I have a work permit that will expire on april 30 2014. However, i just used company paperwork to extend non B visa to april 30 2015, but have not yet renewed work permit.

In the last few days have been offered a new job with new employer.

Any suggestions on what to do?

1 Can i transfer the Non B visa over to new employer and then apply for new work permit??

2 Can i transfer the Non B visa to a Non O visa?? (i am married to a Thai) and then apply for new work permit???

I understand that if i cancel the present work permit OR it expires (next week) then i will also lose the newly extended visa.

New company can give me any paperwork i will need, but do i really have to leave the country to get a new visa or can i take care of this at immigration in Bangkok????

Any help will be much appreciated.

  4. Cheers for the replies guys,

    Looks like pilings it is.

Yes, the contractor has recommended up to 21m.

Does the 180k quote seem resonable for 14 pilings?

Was your contractors quote for bored or driven pilings? For bored pilings 12000+ baht per is in the ballpark. For driven pilings the quote seems high. I just received a quote on a bill of quantity for a turn-key job, and the pilings were quoted at 7000 per for driven. Everything on the BOQ was padded so I don't know if the 7000 per reflects the current rates. Definitely get about three or four quotes. Over the last year I have been hearing rough numbers for bored ranging from 10,000 baht per to 18,000 per and 5000 baht per to 7000 for driven pilings in the Samut Prakan area.

    Thanks for the reply choff56

Other than being louder on the neighbours, is there any difference in the quality of bored or driven pilings?

There seems to be quite a difference in price between the two (the 180k quote was for bored pilings)

If driven pilings produce the same result, it might be worth looking into.

    Thanks again

  5. Hi Guys,

Big question for you learned ones out there!

Starting a single story house build in a few weeks.

The house will be 140 square meters and will be in the Lad praw area, which is prone to sinking.

Was planning on having 14 pilings @ 21 meters deep and have been quoted 180,000.

However, would a 140 square meter concrete slab 1.5 meters thick reinforced with steel be a viable alternative????

Would very much appreciate any and all comments before i get started

    Cheers

  6. It dampens the cravings for nicotine and helps to wean you of the traditional cigs.

You're kidding, right? Nicotine is an addictive drug and it doesn't matter how you take it - pipe, chew, ecig, cigarette... The user is an addict. All nicotine devices whether cigarettes or ecigs or patches or nicotine gum keep the addict addicted.

Would I put heroin in a patch or in an ecig to help a heroin addict kick the habit, or would I take him off heroin altogether? What does it matter how he gets his fix?

Just please don't tell me that taking nicotine in a different form will help kick the habit. Not even patches or gum. They don't work. If they seem to work it is the will to quit, evidenced by the purchase of the patches or ecig, not the substitute.

Most of what you have said is complete waffle!!

Using e-cigs is probably the easiest way to quit smoking.

Vaporizing glycerin with gradually lowered nicotine content WILL work.

Worked for me after a few months.

As it has for countless others.

  7. Before securing any credit card here in Thailand, beware of the lack of fraud protection.

    I have a K-Bank credit card, which i did need a W/P to secure.

Unfortunately my credit limit is rather high, and recently over the past few weeks there has been some

on-line fraudulent activity with my card. (a dozen times with NO SMS alerts)

To cut it short i have had to jump through many hoops to try and prove to K-Bank that i am not responsible

for this activity, and i'm still unsure if they will cover the losses.

The fraud protection from your home country is invaluable.

I also have a Thai Amex (needed a W/P for this too) and they operate to international standards so i

would recommend them over Visa (no yearly fees if you ask them nicely to waive)

  8. For years no problems...........until about a year ago!!!!!!!!

Now hardly anything gets delivered. (cards, letters, packages you name it)

    poanoi hit the nail.

I can tell you it just goes into the bin, they can't be bothered to deliver it.

The only solution is registered mail

Costs a bit extra, but it will ensure it gets to you.

I'm sure there will be posters who say everything is rosey in their area,

but for my area of Bangkok there definately is a problem

  9. Thats what you get for sending your kid to a sub-par (probably) Thai school.

The Int. schools have web portals, weekly newsletters, and 7 year olds are certainly not allowed to leave the school grounds with out their parents or approved guardian (who must present a valid ID at the gate). If a child was not picked up, the school should have kept her in the office until a parent was contacted.

Send your kid to a proper school or stop complaining.

    WOW!!!!!!!

What a condescending reply to something that could happen anywhere. Mr Trout, you should be ashamed of yourself.

On a much lighter note.........interesting story Mr Moonrakers..........they don't come with an instruction manual do they!!!!!!

  10. Hi Apple learned ones.

I want to buy a B&W Zeppelin speaker for the ipod.

As you know this is a premium sound system.

However, the price in Bangkok is also premium at about 30-32k baht. In the UK i can buy one for about 17k baht.

Is it worth the risk in bringing one back???

Could i bring it on to an aircraft as carry on? (forget it as checked luggage)

Would security tear it apart ( it looks like a bomb!!!)

Would i be stung at Bangkok customs?

    Thanks for your input

  11. I don't know about you guys, but i most certainly DO read customer reviews before booking a hotel.

As far as i'm concerned it's the only way to get unbiased feedback.

If the reviews are largely negative, why would I stay there?

I simply won't use Agoda if they are deleting negative comments, as it defeats the purpose of having comments in the first place.

The OP is entitled to his opinion, and should be allowed to post whatever he likes in the hotel reviews.

As an advertiser on this forum, Agoda are being rather quiet. Maybe they can't be bothered to defend themselves.

  12. Right now it is just election promises.

I can't see the minimum wage increasing that much so soon.

Expect a gradual increase over the next few years to the 300baht/day range.

The sad thing is, minimum wage workers aren't noted for their productivity.

Pay 220 baht a day for numbskulls now, and pay 300 baht a day for numbskulls later.

A significant increase in costs but NO increase productivity

  13. Just tried checking the prices return to London for March next year with the latest air asia sale.

Even 8 months in advance i am getting total costs of 32-35k depending on the day of the week and that doesn't include extras.

As of october 24 this year they will not fly in to Stansted anymore, they are switching to Gatwick. (Stansted was the only reason i considered them)

Probably better for me to use the full service airlines for a little extra.

The ever elusive air asia bargain!!!!!!!!!

  14. I never seem to have snagged a really good deal with air asia.

Even when they had a promotion to Bali a few weeks ago, they advertised for only 2k each way, but when i tried to book for the available travel dates it ended up costing 10k return. ( still half the price of Thai air)

Like a poster mentioned, i think when they have a 4 day sale you can only get those super low prices for the first half hour.

  15. Learned ones.

Right now there is another Air Asia "sale"

A 4 day promotion with "special" prices to many destinations.

Bangkok to London for Feb -June next year is shown at just 8k all in.

The problem i have is whatever dates i enter on their site for that travel period, the price is nothing near 8k each way. (more like 11k each way before taxes, fees and add-ons) So the final price would be closer to 16k each way.....nearly double the advertised price

This is the same for me everytime i check out their special promotions to other destinations.

My question is How do any of you guys actually manage to snag these advertised low prices????

  16. I found out earlier today why i have been unable to snap up an ipad2 from any of the big name department stores.

Their opportunity seeking employees are using their employee discount to buy them all up and sell them on to MBK and Pantip.

Only a fraction are being sold directly to joe public, and they are gone in an hour.mad.gif

Anyway, there are more than plenty available right now at MBK for about 1000 baht over retail.

  17. Flightstats Follow the link. Enter your flight number for today, arrival and departure, and see if it's on time, delayed, cancelled. Should give you a good idea of what you're heading for. Repeat every day and you'll be as wise as anyone else. Good luck.

    Thanks for that link bahtboy

There seems to be a scary amount of cancelled flights

  18. Still watching the situation in Cairo.

Egypt air's website is certainly not much help.

Options are limited right now as i am flying with Egypt air to Madrid with a transit in Cairo.

Has anybody out there been through Cairo airport in the last week or so??

  19. Hi All,

Unfortunately i have to transit through Cairo airport very soon.

I have read reports from travellers of cancelled flights out of Egypt, and general chaos at the airport.

Have tried to contact the airline with no joy.

I am not happy with the prospect of being taken to Cairo and then being unable to leave.

Does anybody out there have any up to date info on transitting through Cairo airport??

    Thanks
