  1. Do the super rich with their private jets even bother with immigration stamps?

Almost any airport can handle a small private jet, yet how does immigration work at these airports?

Let's face it, if you land your jet at some small provincial airport in the UK, there is no way immigration are going to be waiting for you.

Maybe these international high flyers are expected to present their passports at the earliest convenient time

  2. I did my first 90 day report yesterday and was fined 2000 Baht for being late, however as I was 14 years late I have no complaints!

    :) Nibor

This is why I have always said that the idiots are us who get into the 90-day reporting system in the first place. People who just ignore it are wise to do so. This guy went through 14 years of visas and countless dealings with immigration, and obviously nobody there cared less whether or not he was reporting.

I think you are on to something there.

I too know people that never report and never seem to have a problem.

Once you step over to the dark side they have you!!!!!!!!!

  3. Sanan to propose that all schools close

    <snip>

he will propose to the cabinet meeting the closure of all schools nationwide for two to four weeks to help curb the flu outbreak.

it was not necessary to shut down entertainment venues for the time being.

would like to know why one must close the other can stay open?! Just wondering

In the first case no tea money is involved :)

  4. The collapsible baton is an excellent idea.

The big problem is if bitten, you then have to deal with the long course of rabies shots (10 times i believe at 500 baht a pop).

I would stand my ground and have absolutely no problem using a baton or any object on a dog that came too near.

  5. lucky to have a room? maybe my lifestyle is slightly different to yours i dont live in a room, that was given to me for free, it is a 4 bedroom apartment that i purchased. the maid worked for me not my building and her disloyalty by informing the jursistic person has not got her anywhere apart from fired, the cat will stay and i will hire a new maid tomorrow.

i am aware of the "no pets allowed" policy as are the other thai residents who live here but also choose to keep pets and yes i stick my two fingers up at it, but not because im a foreigner but because my cat does not infringe upon any other residents of the building.

now the maid will have a lot more time on her hands to contemplate her actions and if you feel so sorry for her i shall furnish you her details and you may hire the disloyal peasant that she is

    Good for you thirdeyedmt

I would have done the same thing too.

  6. Unfortunately, Thailand has become the Benidorm of Asia.

Easily accessible to the working class masses from the UK.

When you have large numbers from one particular country, you will get the bad elements.

I am ashamed if i see fellow Brits drunk and disorderly.

The Yanks would probably have the same problem if they were here in numbers.

Fortunately, their working class haven't even heard of Thailand.........or is that Taiwan????

  7. Exactly

If City hall and the "traffic"police were really serious about safety.................This would be taught properly when you get/re-new your license.

Having done the test I can tell you that it is taught, however no-one listens and certainly no-one obeys the laws once they get behind the wheel, that's if they even bother with a license.

The biggest problem is arrogance and manners. Thai drivers simply have none of the latter and too much of the former.

You can't change this overnight in a culture that traditionally dictates the more status and money you have the less you have to obey laws. By driving a motor vehicle you automatically have more status than a pedestrian and it is the pedestrian's responsibility, being on foot, to avoid your shiny Mercedes, not the other way around.

Killing a pedestrian would cost less than a new set of tyres let's not forget.

    Spot on

  8. City Hall must be really really bored.

This is total and utter rubbish.

Thai drivers consider pedestrians a little higher than the bacteria around the toilet bowl.

I could stand at a zebra crossing all day and not one driver will even consider for a nanosecond about actually stopping.

I could dance around on the side of the road in a Ronald Macdonald outfit with strawberry donut shoes and i still won't be noticed.

This will just not work, plain and simple.

Drivers here will not change, and yes, you can judge a nations civility by how it's drivers treat pedestrians!!!!!!!

So are you saying they should do nothing?

I see so many negitive comments on here these days - if they do something - people jump all over it saying it won't work or they shouldn't do it or the BIB are just after money, same happens if they do nothing - Thai doesn't care.

Yet now I see majority of people wearing helmets, yes the BIB got some money but end result is that most people now wear helmets.

When I first came here, people thought traffic lights were for decoration but now most people stop.

Same for indicators - now maybe 50% use and increasing.

There are many things here that could be improved - at least give some credit for trying to improve something.

This city hall directive is pie in the sky

Lip service with a 500 baht fine

If you wonder why you read so many negative comments.......try crossing the roads here like i do 4 times every day.

Live here long enough and you see straight through the waffle.

Ever wonder why the fines are only a few hundred baht?????????

Yet most cars cost over a million.

A 500 baht fine will NOT change a nations driving habits.

Make the fine 5000 baht and people might take notice.

I have lived here since the 90's and been coming since early 80's - is that not long enough? How about yourself?

The worst drivers I see here are people who are not driving their own cars - delivery trucks, buses etc and the certainly would not want to pay 500 Bahts. The richer Thai's may be able to pay but they do not want the inconvenience, so again it will work if enforced.

    :):D :D

    Robert44, my dear man

    You are joking aren't you?

Tell me about this oasis where you live :D

  9. Wow, a 500 baht fine...........

That will be a real deterrent. :)

whether something will be a deterrent or not depends on the likelihood of getting caught and fined

( statistically EVPI - the expected value of perfect information). the liklihood is low in thailand

when you say wow are you saying it is insignificant for a farang or thai? for some thais 500 baht would hurt.

Thai or farang, it really doesn't matter

500 baht will be negotiated down to a couple of hundred baht.

Even Somchai on his bike can afford that!

Small fines are NOT a deterrent

Small fines are convenient pocket change for the BIB

  10. Exactly

If City hall and the "traffic"police were really serious about safety.................This would be taught properly when you get/re-new your license.

Right now it is not.................have you actually seen the driving test they do here............it involves reversing in to a box. :)

If you asked most drivers here, "what is that black and white area crossing the road?" most would probably scratch their heads and smile.

What really worries me, is that some poor soul will now actually believe city hall and think they can step in the road and drivers will just stop.

    Not going to happen.

This is the nature of the word "crackdown"...........short, sharp but doesn't last very long.

Remember the "crackdowns" every few years on smoke belching vehicles.
