Explain how someone can be pardoned when someone hasn't been convicted of anything? Does the pardon state what crime they are guilty of but haven't been convicted for? If it's just a general pardon for any crime they might have committed- what if they murdered someone in the past- will they be pardoned for that too? Does the pardon extend to the future- just imagine what one could do if one had that sort of pardon. I read a science fiction story about being able to buy a pre emptive pardon for future crimes, so one could go out and murder someone and not go to prison. Is the US political system a bad joke?

I had a problem with nasty cops in the UK ( they were females on more than one occasion, but that may not be relevant ). I never had a problem with Thai cops, and any interaction was friendly. I benefited from that "corruption" myself, and avoided an expensive court case over a minor accident. I love Thailand just the way it is. Cops in the west may not want backhanders, but try getting any action on a burglary; not going to happen unless very lucky. What's worse, corrupt cops or useless cops?

Unlikely to be the real military. The National Guard has been mentioned. The real military is short of manpower as few want to join up and get sent to one of USA's interminable M E wars, IMO. As I see it, put up enough razor wire and problem solved. That is very nasty stuff to get through if the border patrol isn't cutting it for you.

You missed the bit about her being Thai/ Chinese and having a HiSo family. While all women are not necessarily interested in the size of one's wallet, in these days of electronics it would be more the sort of house and car that one has to prove one has a decent bit of capital.
