  1. I can't add much to the regrets over the horrendous loss of Central World except to put in a word for the kids, and not only those whose parents have no jobs now. At the top of Central World there was a large and unique kids' urban playground and fun learning center, with a bookshop. It brought such joy and delight to the countless kids who visited it. But no more.

Yes. I will be missing the Thai Knowledge park (TK Park) which is a big library.

Hope Central World is up and running again soon.

  2. Come on - you didn't need to be a phophet to know what was going to happen. It could have been avoided if the government had moved at the very beginning - they DIDN'T - it would have been avoided if the Police and army acted earlier and decisively - THEY DIDN'T. I wonder why - maybe they feel a bit guilty about how they came to power (banning a polititian for apearing on a cooking programme, removing Members of Parliament because of a Court ruling which was rather one sided) - maybe they couldn't act quickly because they had totally failed to do anything about the Yellow folk occupying the airports and doing damage equivalent, in economic terms, to 10 Central Worlds. The Government and the cabinest and the officials have handled this badly - they should resign and call fresh elections - OOPPs maybe that is what they should have done at the beginning to make them legitimate - maybe having the guy who ran the Yellow protest movement in charge of Security wasn't a very good idea. Maybe assasinating a rebel general with a sniper shot in the head was something that made folk just a little p'ed off.

If the current Government stays on after this it will have no authority - if the current military planners and commanders stay on after this they will have no respect - If there is not a major change in how Thailand is run after this - the country it will have no regional respect and if these required changes aren't public and universally acceptable to all the population - Thailand ain't going to recover from the damage this has done to the country's image. 24 - 7 on BBC and CNN. People are asking why is there so much anger in the Land of Smiles. Ask yourself

wonderfully said... but, who knows after fresh elections... those STUPID IDIOT YELLOW SHIRTS will do something again... if the election goes in favour of Red Shirts..

  3. Anyone who funded these Red Shirt activities should be part of these arrest warrants

I am surprise Thai people have not gotten angry and burned down Mr. T's and all his family, houses yet

Yes.. I am surprised at this myself... They should strip Mr. T's property naked... and loot all his possessions...

And, wish the police standby and watch and come to the rescue once everything has burned to the ground.. just like they did during the Red Shirt demonstrations..

  4. In my son's school (international), the sleeping time (after lunch) for KG1 is from 11:50 to 14:00 (2 h 10 m), take a few minutes off for preparation, etc.

Lunch Time is 11:00 to 11:50.

And, my son (3.5 years old) gets to bed at around 9:30-10:00pm every day and wakes up at 6:30am (8 h 30m to 9h of sleep at home) and gets on the van at 6:50 am.

  5. Let me add my own reply, after visiting the Hospital yesterday Mon 3rd May 2010.

Does anyone has experience with Lerdsin Hospital, Silom and Gynaecology. Both me and my wife are non-thai Asians, and cannot speak Thai.

I have a limited Thai vocabulary.

I am planning to take my wife for regular checkup there as we plan for our next child and eventually for the child birth.

    My queries are:

    - Does English speakers use this hospital? Can non-thai speakers manage..?

Yes.. non thai speakers can manage.. as there wasan information counter staff who speaks moderate English.. all the other staff could speak slight english.. Certainly, a few Thai vocab in our part helps greatly.

Did registration at the counter... and the whole process took less than 15 minutes.

    - What are the typical opening times for Gynaecology, Floor, etc.? Are they available on Saturdays and Sundays..?

They are open on Mon - Fri (for outpatient department). Not on Sat/Sun. Public Holiday should be ok too I think. Typical times are for obstetrics/gynecology are 08:00 - 12:00 (or 09:00 - 13:00 am not sure).

Gyne/Obst is in First Floor.. Room 104/105.

You should use the main entrance from Silom Road. There are parking at the back.. and you could do drop in Silom Road Entrance.

Some other observations in 1st Floor..

    - Pharmacy

    - Obstetrics/Gynecology

    - Xray

    - Ultrasound

    - Computer Tomography (CT Scan)

    - Social Security

    - Registration/Information

    - Laboratory

    - and some more.

    Canteen is in the backside.

    - Typical waiting times? Best time to visit to avoid the rush...

Around 30 minutes of waiting, I guess. This waiting time was observed on a Mon at around 11:30am.

    - Do you think they will be open tomorrow May 3rd to go for general enquiry / checkup and get a feel for the place..?

Yes. They were open for everything although it was a public holiday.. But, it is a Monday. We managed to complete the whole registration, doctor checkup, etc. within 60 minutes.

Previously we used Bangkok Christian Hospital, but we want to change to Lerdsin because it is more closer for us and for affordability.

Cost for Pap Smear Test, some cervical cancer test and General Gynecology Checkup, inclusive of everything was THB200.

They have asked us to come back in 2 weeks for followup.

Any more information from other users will be highly appreciated.

Any information related to Lerdsin and Gynaecology will be highly appreciated.

    Thank you.

  6. There are two important considerations: the backset of the lockset and the height of the lockset off the floor. The backset is the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the lockset hole. As I mentioned earlier, this dimension is commonly 2 3/8 or 2 3/4 inches. Doors that have glass or narrow stiles almost always require 2 3/8 inch backsets. If you use a larger size, the decorative rosette might overhang the stile on a paneled type door. Flush doors do not pose this problem. Commonly, the centerline height of a cylindrical lockset is 36 inches off the floor.

This quote is taken from a DIY web site. The backset 2 3/8 and 2 3/4 equates to 6cm and 7cm which most likely is the respective size 6 and 7 the technician referred to. So you will need to shop for an exact match as you are replacing a lock set and not installing a new one to a door with no holes.

I did not catch where you are located but there are many lock shops around that can easily re-key the lock you have or replace as needed.

    Hi..

This is the exact lock I am looking for my room door (inside the flat).

I can't get it anywhere.. looking for the past 1 year+.. can't find in HomePro, Tesco, Carrefour and various exhibitions around Bangkok.

    Lock #1

    2378ffdc0e.jpg

The photo above was obtained from our condo maintenance guy and he said... if I buy from him it will be B2500.

While similar locks like this #2, sells in HomPro for B250-B400 (some cheap but good models), but only that this won't fit in my door. This is of size 6 or sthg, while the above one is of Size 7.

    Lock #2

    917d0cae83.jpg

I have another option is to get this type of size 7.. and the price about B350. only that it is not cylinder lock.. and I am not sure it will really fit for my door.

    Lock #3

    7ceedf1dd9.jpg

Can someone advise where I can get the Lock #1 for a resonable price... say of B350-BB700. I am unsuccessful to find it so for.

  8. You can try in the following places... I haved marked 3 places on the map... All are in Silom... the previous poster's choice will also be good...

One is marked "A" and the other is marked "B" and the third is just with "ROUND DOT"

Ignore the blue lines... should you need to.

You look for Burmese Shop around these 3 places... it is just a minute look around those spots...

And, you will get all sorts of Indian spices...

I prefer you go to the "ROUND DOT" or the "B" spot for best choices.

Here is the URL: for Indian Spices...

  9. Can someone suggest a Thai way of doing wirelessly this with less than B5000 setup... and a very acceptable video and audio quality.

dondela: Is Xtreamer any good... Can it do wirelessly from laptop to TV... Can I watch youtube playing on computer to TV.

paulfr: how do you actually connect to your tv from your netbook... Can you put it in clear terms... what product? what you mean by pc input... is it VGA input... and more info please... cost of it, etc.... etc...

  10. My Dell Inspiron 6000 (2005 Model) has VGA Output and S-Video.

My Samsung 21" LCD TV has HDMI and VGA Input.

Previously I used to connect my Laptop to my Old TV (Not LCD) like this

Laptop VGA Out ----> 5m Cable ----> RCA Cable to TV (Video IN)

Laptop Audio Headphone Out ----> 5m Cable ----> RCA Cable to TV (Audio In) Right/Left

Now, I have a new LCD TV... and I want to do this wirelessly. My Laptop and TV are around 10m away from each other.. No Line of Sight... TV in living room... Laptop in Bed Room... Both Audio and Video should be carried to my TV.

My laptop is accessing internet through wifi... the wifi adsl router sits near the TV..

How can I do this? at What Cost?

Ideally this is how it should be...

I plug something into my Laptop... and that should carry the Audio and Video signal to a receiver near the TV... and the receiver is in turn connected to the TV... and I get to watch youtube videos with audio... when I click play from laptop..

Purpose of this setup is to... I want to watch Youtube videos on my TV.

    Thank you.

  11. yes you can pay in 7-11 and more other places as other posters suggested

or in those barcode payment ATMs (I use Siam Commercial Bank - SCB). For both types, you need to pay B10 fee.

paying at ATM, you can even pay after the due date. This worked for me at least once when i tried 2 months back. ATM barcode payment with SCB So, a good choice when you missed the due date, as 7-11 or visiting the banks will not accept the payment after due date. You have to normally go to the electric authority to pay the bill (but any location is ok). but those f***ing barcodes are sometimes unreadable by the machine occasionally... which is a pity, in such cases you have no other choice but to visit the bank or 7-11 or the electric authority itself after due date.

Following is just for idea:: but, you better not try it

Don't pay too long after the due date though.. as they may come to disconnect you. But, i have seen usually i get a first warning first. And, also i was told if you live in a Big Condo, it is not easy for them to disconnect the electricity right away.. they have to speak to the condo guys to arrange for disconnection.. which may not happen in short notice... so another week or two or more there...

  12. What you see in the photo below was replaced today to a new one by our condo plumber.

All the item which was removed today as can be seen below:

    imag0045i.jpg

Where the above items fit in place is under the kitchen sink and the u-bend fell off, so it required replacement.

I was hoping that it just required some tape and tightening... But, alas, no!!! the plumber said the whole thing has to be replaced due to it is very old.

What is the typical cost of buying the above items? Where can this be bought? Home Pro???

I was charged THB1,200 to replace the above items (which he bought for me) and to fix it (took less than 15 minutes for him). I feel I am overcharged. or Am I not? Also, was i cheated... may be this just required some tightening and he deliberately wanted to charge this exorbitant price.

    Please advise.

    Thank you.

To give you an idea where the above pieces fit.. The picture below is not our sink.. but just to give you an idea..

  13. I'm curious as to where this bank is... I've stayed numerous times at the Narai Hotel at 222 Silom... So where is the bank?? In fact I'm staying at the Narai within 2 months.

333 Silom Down the Road from Sala Deang BTS on the opposite side of the road from The Pat Pong Soi's

no it is not... it is on the same side as the patpoing sois.. and the same side as the narai hotel.

it is on the opposite side of holiday inn... vorawat building.. jewelry trade centre...etc.

  14. OK, I AM JUST TRYING TO COMPREHEND THE ABOVE STATEMENT....???

YOU HEARD A LOUD EXPLOSION, YOU SAW SHATTERED GLASS, THERE WERE NO POLICE, YOU HAD NO IDEA WHAT CAUSED IT.......AND..... YOU WALKED TOWARDS THE LOCATION??? YOU SPENT HOURS THERE?.....HMMM...

MAYBE SOMEONE ELSE CAN EXPLAIN MORE SUCCINCTLY THAN ME....

WHEN HEARING EXPLOSIONS, SEEING GUNS DRAWN - SEEING PEOPLE BRANDISH WEAPONS... THE ONLY DIRECTION TO GO IS DOWN, FLAT ON THE GROUND, COVER YOUR FACE, THEN, ASAP, HIGH TAIL IT IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. .......I recall walking with a newly arrived American friend by sidewalk vendors one evening last year. He saw a Thai man draw a gun, pointing it at another about 30 M down the street. I turned, and grabbed my friend, threw him on the ground behind a parked taxi. He had wanted to "...see what was going on..." I told him no way pulling him up behind me as we turned a corner and took the first taxi away.....I have followed a policy of avoiding drunk, violent, hot scenes as I traveled and lived all over Asian and Latin America the past 20 years. For some reason, it seems Westerners in Thialand gravitate TOWARDS those situations.......

HOW CAN WE COMPLAIN ABOUT THE LACK OF COMMON SENSE WITH THAIS WHEN MANY WESTERNERS WILL STAND AROUND GALKING AT SCENES OF VIOLENCE, DRUNKENNESS, EXPLOITATTION... THAT MAY WELL ESCALATE FURTHER?.....

Simply, use your heads, Keep them down. This goes a bit further too.

Thais are a generally peaceful people, relative to many other cultures, who have been dealing with a lot of social changes and cultural transformations in a short span of time. They do remarkably well, spilling less blood, and venting differences verbally and with demontrations much more peaceful than many we have seen back in Europe and the Americas. Westerners will have a much better time by simply avoiding the small percentage of Thais involved in exploitation and going into the more grounded circles of Thais engaged in normal life and business activities.

it is me again... apart from the loud noise... at first it even didn't look an explosion... But just a VERY LOUD NOISE.

And, there were at least 100 person staring at the scene and at least tens walking in the exact same spot where the shattered glass is.

There really was nothing to panic (at visual level) at that time... and by the way i am not westerner.

only the loud noise that panicked everyone.. but no fire.. no smoke... and not even sure the shattered glass was real until close inspection at 10 m range.

  15. I'm curious as to where this bank is... I've stayed numerous times at the Narai Hotel at 222 Silom... So where is the bank?? In fact I'm staying at the Narai within 2 months.

the bank is opposite, but you should be save. Narai is a good choice.

the bank is not opposite narai.

Bangkok Bank to Narai Hotel.. Click Here

A is where the bangkok bank is... B is where Narai hotel is.. about 400 m. Both are on the same side.

  16. I was standing around 30 m across the road in Silom when this happened.

It was really loud sound.. just a single time. no smoke or fire seen.

We walked closer to see what was it... all we saw from across the road (that is opposite bangkok bank).. a shattered glass of telephone booth.. a pink taxi in front with some minor damage... and about 3 lebanese guys (or may be more like italian to me) running up and down and taking photographs.. .later i was told those lebanese guys were owners of a restaurant in that area... and they got famous for assisting police in getting caught of bike robbers (in earlier times).. and so they acted like heros and took control of the situation.

no police in sight for a long time... only say about 30-45 minutes.. a first cop arrived on scene.

and then for the next few hours... that side of the road was blocked from mahesak road junction.

and we had no idea what caused it up until i see the news in website.

  17. I have replaced another tyre which was losing air again... through an assistant... for THB1,000 second hand.

And, they have kept and returned the old one in the bunk...

My question is.. is the old tyre (leaking air tyre) any worth for somebody for resale.. and get some $$$ (may be 100-200 baht or sthg)

or.. is it just throw-away and no use to anyone at all.

If yes, where should i sell it.

    --

Question 2: I still feel that my tyre is losing air every few weeks (visually). even though the pressure just about looks right at 30.

    What should be the problem?

Should I just replace all my tyres to new ones... and this problem will be gone once and for all. Or, will it still remain (even with new tyres) due to some other problems in the car... like a disloged metal near the tyre puncturing it every time (even though new one). Is there such a thing?

  18. I have and I like it. Has a gym, pool, two restaurants downstairs, a 7/11, massage studio, 24 hour security. Really nice place.

Are you talking about Lumpini Place? Thats what I am talking about.

Hi Thanks for the reply--This place http://www.thenarathiwas.com/

Same as what you mentioned or not ??

I had a friend who stayed there for about a year.. and he said it was good.

I have visited him twice and in my opinion it looked good too.
