  1. Are there any devices like a "DVD Player with USB In" -- out there where I can record TV Shows and Video IN to the USB Stick directly.

What is the price? Where Can I get it? Cheap brand will do as long as it works.

I need to be able to: Items in BOLD are the key items.

    - Watch DVD Movies using DVD+R DVD+RW

    - Watch avi xvid movies using USB Flash Drive

    - Record TV shows etc. onto the USB Flash Drive directly

    - Preferably it should also have some AV-IN sockets to connect my handycam, digital camera and also S-Video In (or VGA IN) to project from my computer. (not really necessary)

My LCD TV already has those anyway, only that I am too lazy to connect at the back of the TV.

    - Able to Record TV shows onto DVD is not really necessary.. if this can make the device cheaper.

Please throw your comments to do this efficiently... Thank you.

  2. In our recent internet survey we asked if you was interested in a 14 days trial of Thaivisa SMS.

As you supplied your mobile number, we today started your subscription.

    To unsubscribe:

    Just dial *424010099

Or email support[at]thaivisa.com with your mobile number, and we sort it out.

    Kind regrads

    George

Dialing *424010099 in your AIS phone works in STOPPING these messages. Once the above number is dialed you will receive a text message (in Thai) in few seconds saying that NT Thai Visa Text Message is Cancelled (B49/month)... bla bla.

I don't understand the full content of the message.

Also, I don't know if other mobile users in DTAC, True has to dial the same number???

DTAC and True is same number to unsubscribe.

I am still receiving Message from Thai Visa... The last one was at 16:03 about Police Tue arrested 100 members of foreign based online gang.....

What is going on???? Why is the SMS message not stopped....

For gooodness sake... don't close the topic until you have resolved it completely.

  4. I have a list of around 50 articles that are saved on my computer that I need to find. The articles are about cities and famous landmarks (eg London- Big Ben) I think nearly all of the article files are named by the city or landmark but I think a few arent.

Is there a way of getting Windows (or some other app.) to search my hard drive with this list searching not only for file names but also text within the file? The files are all MS Word and I'm using XP.

Here's an example of what I'm searching for:

    General: (Barcelona)

    Park Guell (Barcelona)

    La Rambla (Barcelona)

    Barri Gòtic (gothic quarter) (Barcelona)

    La Sagrada Família (Barcelona)

    Montjuïc (Barcelona)

Do a Search on the directory you think the files will reside...

Is it C:\... or C:\MyFiles\ etc... just get to the lowest level you can so that you can have minimal number of files.

Then.. search for file name that looks like... "*barcelona*.doc;*london*.doc" put in the search box like this. for multiple files use a ';', for search pattern use a '*'... for file types... use *.doc, etc.

    See below image:

    th.206f175ba1.jpg

You can also search for text with in the file... just put some text in the 'word or phrase in the file'. keep it minimal to cover a broad area.

  5. The Thaiflight statistics mostly aren't working for Suvarnhabumi. If you look at the arrival status for flights between 6:00 and 9:00, almost all show "scheduled", "en route" etc, with only one flight actually showing landed.

Something's not right when a flight arriving at 05:50 from Zurich is still showing "en route, on time" at 11:54!

Since most long haul flights in that arrival bracket departed before the airport got shut down, they left as usual but must have landed somewhere else!

Call the airlines, or check their websites. EVA air for example give clear status of their flights, showing that flights leaving today for Bangkok all have been canceled.

Thai airways have canceled pretty much all international flights, and all the incoming flights which left just before the airport got closed where diverted to Don Mueang (16 flights) and U-Tapao (3 flights).

Most other airlines have canceled everything inbound for Bangkok.

I have real-time AOT (Airport of Thailand) FIDS Feed right on my Pc here at work. And, I can compare any flight just with the click of a few key strokes and clicks.

Flightstats data is good for some planning purposes. But, the data will NOT necessarily be accurate for real-time information as promoted by Thaivisa.

    For example:

    14/07/09 13:45 FD 3167 J KBV

    14:40

    B2 B2 B733 HSAAI

Above flight is dealyed for almost an hour and there is no indication of such in the flightstats page. Yes.. it is true that some flights are updated with correct delay times.

It all depens on whether flightstats received the data from the Airline or Airport feed to reflect the accurate information. If I digged a little deeper, I am sure I can find some flights missing on the flightstats page altogether... So, as I said it is good when you have nowhere else to go and just want to get some idea about the flight schedules.

AOT FIDS (Flight Information Display System.. the LCD monitors throught out the airport) and the Airline Flight Tracking websites are the most dependable of all sources.

Unfortunately... AOT FIDS view is not available to General Public. But, airline websites are there for you guys for all major airlines... CX, TG, EK, etc.

The best thing about Hong Kong... There is a live webpage of Flight Data = FIDS for the general public in here:

    http://www.hongkongairport.com/flightinfo/eng/chkfltarr.html

I just hope Suvarnabhumi will also follow suit.

I have 10 years experience working in Hong Kong Airport and current 2 years in Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport. And, I consider myself expert of flight schedules... Any questions... please put through.

  6. smartvoip.com

you can call from PC to phone (or)

phone to phone through a web connection or GPRS or wifi on say iphone.

Say, you want to call from PC to a Thai Mobile Phone... Cost is 0.05EUR just for the connection and no additional charge regardless of how many minutes you speak. And, in some cases, there is not even a connection charge.

Say, you want to call your Thai Mobile Phone to Another Thai Mobile Phone.

Cost is again just 0.05EUR for the connection and the call is FREE for unlimited minutes.

    0.05EUR = 2.38THB.

Works 98% of the time and has problems with the connection once in a while. Some problems are: The phone doesn't ring.

And, you can call several international destination for FREE... check out their website.

And, as other poster suggested... it is similar to voipcheap.com or also nonoh.net and various others... All of them have similar service and user interface... but the price varies slightly between them. check out their respective sites.

i think currently smartvoip.com has got the best rates for Thailand use.

  7. Just wondering if anyone has an opinion on using Open Office Calc as a subsitute for MS Excel.

    I want to do spreadsheets.

    Thanks!

    :)

Yes. Certainly it is an excellent alternative to MS Excel. Open Office complete package is the best out there that is very closely equivalent to MS Office.

If you can use, you know, those illegal CDs of MS Office... then stick to MS. But, if you have to pay for your software... just ditch MS. There are close alternatives to that just like Open Office.

MS Software is the best out there... but if you have to pay for it... just forget it.

  8. Hi all,

I'm doing an electronics project with some students and need parts. Anyone know of anywhere in Bangkok that I can get things like microcontrollers, op-amps, and breadboards? I'd specifically like to be able to find Arduino boards, but I know that may be a stretch.

I tried looking around Fortune and didn't see any components...just already-made electronics. I'm thinking Panthip Plaza but the idea of walking around that place looking for something specific makes my head hurt!

Anyone know of anywhere that's likely to have this stuff?

    Thanks!

    Lacey

Old Siam Plaza in Bangkok... 2nd and 3rd Floors look for Amorn Shop.

They got just about everything everything.

  9. Just want some thoughts from TV laptop users. I want to buy a laptop for around 40,000 Baht and was looking at either a Sony Vaio or a Macbook. Which do you think is the better buy (or even other brands)???

    Thanks in advance...

Never buy a Mac. They are costly and not worth the price.. apart from just a clean design.

With windows... it is convenient, cheap and free in most cases.

you should NOT be locked with the same vendor for both hardware and the OS.

  10. I know this topic has been covered before, but I am really considering getting an Apple notebook. I am willing to spend 2500 dollars American on it.

I am a music producer / DJ and have found IBMs to work just fine. However, there are some questions I would like answered before buying an Apple:

    1) Is it hard to download 'pirated' software? (like Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, etc.)

    2) Does it work with bit torrent clients like utorrent?

    3) Do .avi files work with it?

    4) Can it run Windows seamlessly?

    5) I would want to run games like Civ 4 and play friends who own IBMs. Possible?

Also, I'm just curious to hear testimonials from people who made the switch and either like it or dislike it. I know owning an Apple is more expensive, which might be a bother.

Also, my IBM (Dell Inspiron) is having problems in this humid environment... would an Apple be better suited for Bangkok?

    1) YES. Quite Hard

    2) YES. see http://torrentfreak.com/mac-bt-clients/

    3) YES. see http://guides.macrumors.com/Watch_AVI_Movies_in_Mac_OS_X

    4) YES with some kind of virtualization. But, trust me it is totally crap. Don't believe any word what other say. It is slow and totally useless. It is only useful, when you are in a desolate island and desperate to run a windows version of a software with no windows PC but only a mac which has a virtual environment to run Windows.

    5) Civ 4 is available for Mac too as you can see here.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civilization_IV. I have no idea what Civ 4 is really

    - My comment is Apple is just beautiful for the eye with a clear screen and a clean design.

    - Only if you are a techno, the Unix environment (using the Terminal) is really good. But, the same can be achieved using cygwin on Windows

    - Everything else is crap and too costly.

with Windows you have a lots of options... Both cheap and good.

Why would you limit yourself with the same vendor for both the OS and the Hardware.

DO NOT BUY APPLE. Go with Windows.

YES!!! I have worked with Both Apple and Windows machine... Apple at work for 2 years (2006-08)... and Windows all other times.

  11. Took a look at the Novotel website and it should work. Thanks everyone.

Within the airport, there is one in Level 6 above the "LEFT LUGGAGE ROOM" in Departure Hall (Level 4). It is right in the middle of the check-in aisles KL but 2 floors above.

    http://www.bangkokairportonline.com/node/87

    http://www.bangkokairportonline.com/node/131

    It is called:

    Skyloft 6 Main Terminal

    Sky Lounge 6 Main Terminal

I have only tried a few drinks, but the atmosphere is nice.

  12. HTC - even if it is genuine - is junk.

    BR>Jack

Separate question but regarding the same topic:

Actually the phone is HTC Magic which was given away for FREE by Google in the Google I/O Conference last May 2009.

And, this guy is selling it in Ebay. And, I asked the seller the question if it can be used in Thailand and his reply was:

Hello,I don't know if it will work in your country.

    Thanks

What I know is that it is an unlocked phone and exactly the same as this one... here.

    I think it should work...

Can you guys tell me if it will work here in Thailand. Any comments... :)

  13. He bought it off ebay, can't carry it.

Get it delivered to your friends in Hong Kong and have them bring it over, save you 1000 - 3000 baht.

By the way, shipping is FREE to either get it sent to Hong Kong or Thailand.

So, I don't really save anything in Shipping Cost.

It is convenient to receive the phone straight to me here in Bangkok, but as I said I am worried about being heavily taxed.

I don't really know when any of my friends will really come to Bangkok... may be in 1-3 months.

  14. I am planning to ship a recently bought phone from Ebay Hong Kong to my home in Bangkok through Postal Service.

It is similar to iPhone for those who do not know what Google Ion HTC Magic Android Phone is.

How can I make sure that I do not end up paying hefty taxes on the phone's delivery here by post.

If there really is no sure way, I will have to ask my friends to bring it over when they visit Bangkok.

Please tell me what should I do from your experience.

The last time a jeans was shipped to me from U.S. by Fedex and the cost of the jeans was about THB1,800 and I ended up paying THB2,000 on taxes. So, I want to avoid a similar mishap.

  15. my only problem is replacing the ELZE remote controls as no one seems to store spares. I have kids who break them every other month!

Have you tried Amorn 3/F in Old Siam Plaza, Bangkok. They sell spare as well as repair old ones.

I am planning to buy an ELZE player. So, do you recommend it highly?

  16. Now I realise this is subjective and that everyone will have their own opinion so please,no squabbling! :)

I've found that around the Nana skytrain there seems to be a lot of good ones,I think it's called the Himali Cha Cha or something like that but I was in there last week and the food was excellent.

I'm originally from Birmingham so I do know a thing or two about curries! :D

    For Good Indian Vegetarian Food...

Sri Ganesh Restaurant in Sukhumvit Soi 20/1 (Cheap, good, clean food)... THB150 for a Full Set Meal

Chennai Kitchen, Thanon Pan, Silom (Near Wat Khek Temple)... THB150 for a Full Set Meal... (Cheap, good, clean food)... but, the owner's attitude is very bad.

  17. Just for you guys information... I ordered 2 Jeans from U.S. and it was sent through DHL... This was my first time and will be my last...

    ordered on 13jan 0300

    received confirmation on 15jan 1058

received jeans by dhl on 17jan 1100. Just 4.5 Days in total.

2 Jeans @USD29.99 each + Shipping USD29 = Total USD88.98 <<<< This was the original cost to me

And, then when DHL delivered to my apartment, they produced an invoice for TAX and other charges for THB 2099 (USD62.12). It is absurd!!!!

Here is the breakdown of what the THB2099 is for:

CUS: Custom Duty & Import Goods VAT THB1885 ---> (See 1 below for further breakdown)

    DHL: Duty Handling Fee THB200

    DHL: VAT THB14

    TOTAL = THB2099

    (1) Breakdown

    USD59.98 Cost of Jeans x 33.7881 Exch Rate = THB 2026.61

    Freight THB600.60

    Ins THB20.26

    Duty is 60% of above total which is: 1588 + Vat 7% 297 = 1885.

So, the total cost of the jeans was to me: USD 151.10 for 2 jeans.

    Amazing Thailand!!!

I checked with the shipper whether they can ship to me through Postal Service next time and they said they cannot... They will only do it by DHL.

Currently, I ship any items to Hong Kong and get it through friends to here.

  18. The normal reccomendation is within the last 30 days. But immigration will often do the extension musch earlier than that. Pattaya immigration even does them as early as 90 days.

Suggest you go to immigration and tell them that a trip is planned and I am sure they will do it early.

You will have to do your extension early also because her extension is based upon yours.

If she was to leave without getting the extension she would have to start all over again.

Don't forget to get a re-entry permit for her when you do the extension.

Thank you for your prompt reply. well noted about re-entry permit as well.

Yes. I understand that I will have to do my extension at the same time as hers.

I will try to ask my company to put our extension as early as possible.

  19. My wife's Non Immigrant 'O' visa is due to expire this July 16, 2009. Last extension is valid for 1 year (since Jul 2008).

Me and my wife are non-thai and I am having a work-permit and working here in Thailand. My company provides all the necessary papers.

How many days (maximum) before can I apply for extension for my wife in the immigration. My wife is due to travel overseas for a few months at the earliest she can but after the visa extension.

If I understood correctly, It is better to do the visa extension beforehand or else I will have to start the whole process again in overseas country i.e. applying for Non Immigrant 'O' and resubmit papers again after arrival in BKK at the immigration, etc. Right???? Please let me know.

I don't want to to take the trouble if that is the case, so I want to do the extension first before.

Please point me in the right direction and also what are the documents required for this, etc.

    Thank you.

  20. Tourist visa exemption effective Thursday

BANGKOK, March 4 (TNA) - Tharit Charungvat, Director-General of the Department of Information of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the Cabinet's decision to exempt the need for a tourist visa for those traveling to Thailand would be in effect from this Thursday to June 4.

In regard to the Cabinet's approval on January 20 as part of the economic stimulus package, the need for a tourist visa for all travellers would be waived for three months starting from March 5.

This included the waiving of a tourist visa on arrival and visitors having to apply for a visa to Thailand at Thai consulates and embassies worldwide.

Foreigners applying for a visa other than a tourist visa must still pay the regular rate.

Does this mean, I can arrive in Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (without visa) anytime before June 4 and apply for the visa at the Arrival Visa counter at the airport and it is still FREE regardless of nationality.

Is the visa valid for 30 days?

    Please advise.
