  1. I find it quite hard to understand ( i know i am on a different planet than most of you...) but why would you want to drive from Pattaya to Bangkok???? you can take the bus for 119 baht or the train for 31 baht and just so much more relaxing and enjoyable.

    F.J ( on another planet...) rolleyes.gif

I'm also on a different planet, another different planet... I would never take the bus if there is a better option.. we read each week (almost daily) of the bus accidents in Thailand, I simply don't trust the drivers and never have in numerous years here.

As a bus passenger you have no control of the driver, how fast he wishes to go or how much sleep he has had, whether or not he's on anything stronger than coffee... You are putting your safety in the hands of someone likely to have had very little education.

As disagreeable as this may seem to some, these are just my thoughts - each to their own - I would choose to drive myself, in my own comfortable car.

Additionally: by the time the Op has taken a taxi to the Bus station, waited for the bus to depart etc, I can't see any time saving.

If I were the Op, I'd be driving straight into Emporium and park there... There is not really a convenient Expressway exit for On Nut (if taking the Upper level expressway).

100% agree on some points. I go to Bangkok quite often. Mostly drive as I live a bit out of town and normally go for 3 or 4 days with my wife. But if going solo, and just for a day, I'll take the bus.

As far as safety, I think a daytime bus is fine (nighttime buses are a no go). I've seen lots of car accidents. As you know, it's not how good you drive! LOL

As for time, I've been stuck on Suk for long periods of time in various places. Bitting my nails as cabs, buses and scooters cut in front of me. On a bus, no worries at all. Read the newspaper on the way out, get off at Ekamai and grab the BTS from there!

Though I do like the freedom of a car!

  2. You could stop by The Lion Pub on Thursdays or The Blue Lagoon Sundays. Some musicians hang out there and could offer suggestions.

As Mentioned above, no band in the area currently plays jazz, unfortunately. But a few groups might do a song or two where you could sit in?

A group also gets together on Sundays on jomtien beach, near the volleyball courts. I know they'd love to have you sit in. I think around 11am or so.

  3. Such a beautiful part of the world. Sad to do the drive along the coast and see mile after mile of abandoned resorts.

    Sorry, craig3365, I feel a bit different.

I did a lot of travelling in due time. And my personal feeling when driving along Israel country roads - what a desolate, hopeless, arid and good for nothing piece of land.

This is only true until one sees what an unbelievable Paradise those Jews have turned it into at some places. Really made me want to take my hat off!

I am still thinking that if their God gave them this land - it was because nobody else would want it the way it was.

And if one day the Arabs would take it back - it would go back to a desolate place barely supporting a mirage of a camel.

Am I correct assuming that talking about miles of abandoned resorts - you are talking about Gaza? This piece I didn't see...

Agree about the Israel side, but I was talking about the drive from Eilat to Sharm. Should have been more specific. Sorry! It's a very bizarre place now. Has been for years.

  4. Don't cut things too close with regards to money. This is your first trip here, enjoy it! Nothing wrong with hotels here. If you shop around, they are the same price as what you will find on airbnb. And as mentioned before, sometimes in better locations.

Nothing wrong with touristy places, they are like that for a reason! People love them. Phuket is a fantastic island. I've spent a month there and loved it. So many beaches to explore. Phi Phi is great also, but the main area is jam packed. Young backpacks love it, others less so.

Thailand is a great country to explore. Have fun!
