  1. How early in advance of the end of a visa extension (a one year work visa) can a new application be made? Normally I do it around 7 days beforehand but when is the earliest possible request? 21 days?

(Normally, I have to apply for a work visa but this year it is a 2 year work permit so I have no paperwork to be done for the permit. So I am hoping to get the visa done early as I am not reliant on staff for work permit issues and want to leave the country for a trip at around that time.)

    Thanks!

  2. Thanks, Ubonjoe! A couple of little questions...

So, I fill in the old address on the re-entry permit (TM8?) in order to match the filed address (as filed in my on-line 90 days form).

Then when I return the 90 days start ticking and at 90days I will have to do a walk-in 90 days with also the TM28? Is it possible to do online with the new immigration entrance number or will the change of address require a journey to the immigration office anyway?

The TM30 is the apartment owner's duty, right? My guess, knowing his efficiency, is that this was long ago done. So his TM30 probably does not match my address as I have recorded it.

  3. My address has changed between my last 90 days address notification (TM47?) and business travel. My understanding was this is ok so long as informed on a routine walk-in 90 day notification. The wrinkle is that I am heading abroad for a few days.

When I fill in the re-entry form at the airport, should I write the new address? This will presumably create a kerfuffle since I have not yet handed in a TM28(?) to immigration. Is the address they want, the one on the files or the one in reality? Could they do a TM28 at the airport? This seems to not matter since by leaving my 90 day clock starts ticking again for my return.

I not only remain in the same immigration area, but it is actually only a change of my room number, since I simply moved across the corridor in my apartment block. I forget myself that I have even moved...

    Thanks.

  4. It is a small pedal e-bike. Max speed is 30kph.

I am most concerned about theft insurance, but its speed etc. means it could do some damage and receive damage on the road.

Any thoughts from fellow e-bike users. I don't have and don't need home insurance so I can't include it within that. It is clearly not an e-scooter so it doesn't fall under the motorbike laws.

(I'm also looking for a pamphlet on relevant traffic laws)

  5. Sheryl and Co.,

I have a Thai friend. She is rather innocent, harmless in nature, and because she is hi-so she is quite isolated from the world. She works in a government post.

She started to complain to me that some people on her Facebook were sending malicious messages to her and saying nasty things about her. All these people are connected to me from over the years, but I haven't seen any in at least 2 years. I have never been close to them. When I pressed her she sent me what seemed entirely innocent photos by those people (say, for example, one girl in a bikini at a swimming pool). Her explanation for how this was a communication to her in particular and how there was a hidden malicious message seemed entirely irrational to me. She claimed, for example, that since the girl's bikini was blue because I had used a e-moji in blue weeks prior, bikini-girl was communicating against my friend.

It seems clear that she has become obsessed with me (they are all facebook friends of mine and she complains one of the friends fancies me) and has locked onto my friends as targeting her. I have blocked her from my Facebook to try to diminish her obsessions. But I don't want to lose her as a friend. I have known her for at least 10 years.

I want her to get better. In speaking to mutual friends of her and mine it's clear that she has even 10 years back displayed odd thoughts. For example, she claimed to see hallucinations while meditating. To me, she was always a little oddball but very sweet in nature.

I have finally persuaded her to see a doctor. But I don't want her case to be dismissed as trivial by the doctor and her sent home. Although she looks harmless and so there is no social danger, it is effectively ruining her life-- she typically writes 30 plus messages to me a day about the ways by facebook friends are attacking her. In a sense, Facebook has become her life.

What doctor and what hospital can I get real care for her?

She's an old friend and I want things to work out for the best with her. My Thai friends tell me that Thais fear mental health at hospitals since they believe it will lead them to be locked away or ostracized.

  6. How will this station Tha Pra work as an interchange station? It has three blue lines merging on it. Does everyone get off and change trains to proceed? Is one line a through line (and if so, which one?)?

  8. Has anyone got a copy (PDF) or even a photo of the "5 diseases" health form (apparently was introduced on March 1st)? The one I've got for my visa has 6 diseases listed so it must be some other form...

I can't rely on my clinic's doctor as he is in his late 70s and not up on these types of things...

  9. I've had this happen twice in 10 years. The second time, the computer was destroyed by a power surge that caused it to smoke and make a loud bang. The power wouldn't even turn on. Yet I still recovered all the data on the hard drive... because I went to Pantip Plaza.

Pantip Plaza has a few places that can deal with it. Give each place the chance to recover the data. If they can't, move to the next stall. You'll have to pay for a new hard drive, perhaps 800 baht in total.

    Cross your fingers.

The park in front of the kings palace by the river is pretty dodgy

That park is closed. It was concreted over for the Royal funeral and is now inaccessible. But it is true that around that area with very few residents there is an unusually high crime rate. The BKK police rated it as a Top 10 robbery area.

  11. I notice at Swampy that the sign at Immigration states that the Thai line is for  'Thai Passport Holders and Registered Foreigners with residence in Thailand'. I asked the staff and they said 'Thai passport holders only'. Now obviously we all know this is not true; foreigners with Thai wives etc routinely use the Thai passport holders line. So I don't have much faith in their level of knowledge.

But I'm intrigued by the 'Registered Foreigners with residence in Thailand' part of the sign. I don't recall seeing this before and it doesn't appear to be referencing the Privilege Cards etc.

In many countries, foreigners with 1 year+ visas are often allowed to use the home country passport line. Has Thailand quietly changed its position?

  12. To offer a heads up (I'm guessing these topics haven't been covered).

My computer is too advanced for Internet Explorer, and the 3 IE add-ons for Firefox no longer work.

Internet Explorer had been the only programme that actually worked to go through the whole online application.

But I found that Firefox worked for the whole application. But the printout for the pending application was not possible.

(For some unrelated reason Edge as a whole is not working on my computer,) But I found that Chrome worked smoothly for even the printout.

So there was presumably some upgrade on their end. There are a few minor graphic changes.

Interestingly, Firefox warned me that the Thai immigration site is a known virus site.

  13. I've waited years for this but I still can't find any TV series (on YouTube etc) that has transcription Thai subs. That is, Thai subs that are an exact transcription of the spoken dialogue.

There are loads of Eng subtitles for Thai dramas, but it would be more useful for a Thai language learner to have Thai subs.

Anyone aware of any for any Thai TV drama series? Anyone have a native Thai friend who is one of those devoted Eng subbers and can persuade them to carry out the easier task of putting up Thai subs?

My Thai stalled three years ago. I want to get learning again. Thanks.

  14. Finding Japanese cuisine that matches up with the authentic, everyday, rustic cuisine of Japan in Bangkok is tough. Way too much here has a high-end, fake feel to it or really bad taste (sometimes in order to attract Thais to it). Azuki on soi 11 was simply superb with a mostly Japanese clientele with a great meal for 350 baht.

But with its sudden destruction where else is there to go for a similar experience (with the tatami mats) with tasty, reasonably priced, centrally located Japanese grub?

I'm particularly interested in hearing from people who have lived in Japan.

  15. Update on 90 days online submissions: the lady at the desk at Chaeng Wattana on 12th July giggled when I told her the online version wasn't working and said "I know as much as you do... sorry.... ".

There were 543 people waiting on 12th July (a Wednesday). A 4 hour wait. I have turned up at the same time in the past where there were only 2 or 3 people waiting.

  16. Ok... I'm baffled.

There seems to be a brand new website under construction that even has a little tab for the 90 days, but which is currently 'under construction'.

Then on the old site the 90 days online access has vanished.

And going straight into the extranet doesn't work...

    extranet.JPG.d0e879efc4b223cc45e1356f39a970b5.JPG

So what is the current situation. Is it merely down today or are they moving it to the new website or... something else? is anyone getting access?

  17. Well. I haven't used immigration for around 2 years now...

Is it still possible to do the 90 days at Major Hollywood Susawad 1st Floor or Imperial Ladproaw 5th Floor (these were both allowed during the protests that seized Chaeng Wattana)?

Or even Chamchuree Square Building, Floor 18 , Phatumwan, Bangkok  (that was allowed during the floods and until about 2009 for anyone for 90days only)?

Or is Chaeng Wattana the only option for residents of Division 1?

  18. I just can't find any Whitening cream for White leather shoes. I bought the shoes at a Central but they only had cleaners.

I'm currently using an expensive Japanese cleaning fluid and toothpaste and a toothbrush to get a lot of the dirt off... but the shoes are gradually losing their whiteness. They don't look good.

If you know any place in the centre (near a BTS/MRT) that sells something like this. I want to hear from you.

    Thanks!
