It probably depends on which street you go to to do your black market money exchanging. Personally I've never seen dudes exchanging cash on the street on the black market. Care to name some of these streets? :)

I think he is talking about all the different money exchange boxes on beach and second roads. However my taxi lady knows where to get better rates she tells the wife, so we'll give her a go when we get there.

  2. Interested to know what the local Pattaya Exchange rates are. Is it worth bringing cash or to just transfer via T/T Telegraphic Transfer.

On internet today with Banks it is about Bt 24.65 to the AU$1.00

If anyone walking around the Pattaya streets have a look thanks.

    Current Advice Level:
        High degree of caution

    Latest update:
There is ongoing transmission of Zika virus in Thailand. A number of cases have been reported in Bangkok. All travellers should protect themselves from mosquito bites. Adopt additional measures advised by the Australian Department of Health, including deferring non-essential travel if pregnant and other advice for both males and females (see Health). The level of our advice has not changed. We continue to advise Australians to exercise a high degree of caution in Thailand. Higher levels apply in some parts of the country.

  4. Attended Chonburi Immigration today to renew my Retirement/Extension to stay Visa

What a rat race queued up out the door, but all in all in and out in 20 minutes and come back in 2 days to pick it up as they are very busy.

I produced all the relevant documents, including my Stat Dec from the OZ Embassy, re my monthly cash flow.

They did ask me to copy all pages from my passport, not just the relevant ones.

I also had to fill out 2 x forms that were in Thai. More paperwork.

One form has to have my full name, DOB, passport number and my country filled in to the bottom half.

The second form was to be signed. It was to let me know that if I overstay what the penalties were and that I understood the penalties.

In reference to proof of address, they are still accepting electric, water bills and receipts of your lodging to date.

He did say that the new rule on long stay retirement visas and the like would sometime this year have to produce a House Book. This was a requirement from the Military to once and for all prove the address where you are staying. The old bill trick would no longer be accepted.

At present the house book takes between 2 to 4 weeks to be finalised and the Chonburi Immigration have a form stating what the requirements are for you to get the house book. All English to be translated to Thai and the House Book must be applied for from the Amphur/Council where your address is. I.e. mine was Nongprue on the Dark Side.

I got this info from the Pattaya Council on North Rd when I went to apply there.

Mods may want to put this info into the Visa section?

    Hope this info helps.

  5. I am off to Jomtien Immigration next week and ask a few question re Extension/Retirement Visa, as I am up for my renewal on the 11th Jan. I am presuming I will still have to go to Australian Embassy Bangkok to have my financial Stat Dec stamped and signed and more than likely get my name in the House Book in Pattaya.

Also have to get a 30 day extension for my dear old mum who has a 60 day visa issued by the Sydney Thai Consulate, as they stated Jomtien Immigration will issue the 30 days require before returning to OZ.

Will let you know next week when I have the info.

  6. Australian Immigration have now computer linked Australia wide with Centrelink and Dep't of Veteran Affairs )(DVA)

Any time you go overseas and return Immigration notify all parties of your movements and the date you left and returned to Aust.

You still have to notify them on line or by phone of your departure and return date and where you are heading to.

I found out today that they knew I had returned to Australia (Informed by Centrelink Officer) but I still had to ring DVA and Centrelink to have my and my wife's allowances reinstated as of the 1st Sept when I got back.

Had I not of rang them, they would not have kept the allowances current and no further payments would have been made.

    For your info

  7. My wife informed me she read in the Thairath (not sure of the name) news that the Thai Government is putting before the next Parliament sitting, a new law that states, anyone who is found to be driving a motor vehicle and they do not legally hold a drivers licence, will be sentenced to 3 months imprisonment.

I presume this law would also be for Motor Bikes as well?

  10. I live over on the Dark Side near the market on Siam Country Club Road. We had according to my rain gauge 51MM of rain in one of the noisiest and fiercest storms I have seen here in Pattaya. I was wondering if anyone had any info on the new tunnel they are digging out and how Pattaya city and the areas around coped.

Has the lake got any more water in it as I noticed last week you could almost walk across it?

  11. Just completed a trip from Pattaya to Hua Hin, Phuket, back to Hua Hin, Pattaya and down to Koh Chang Island.

Spent a lot of time talking to Thai and Falung friends most own bars or taxis, all have stated that the last 12 months have been the worst they have ever seen for tourism and it now being low season has gotten worse. They all said the main tourism now was Chinese and Japanese, but they were on pre paid tours and spent very little cash and were litter bugs on the beaches.. All stated they were glad to see the back or the Russians and as usual were hoping for a better season in the future.

  12. She left the country before and all the TS bashers were sure she wouldn't come back, but she did. The Junta wants her to go..... "take our ex PM...... please!". I'm sure they have plenty of dirt on the current top dogs here.... hate for truth to come out about them.

As far as "convicted criminal" goes, that might be worth something in a country with independent judiciary and rule of law, but we have yet to see that appear here. I would guess that "abuse of power" charges could easily be brought against the whole current bunch running this monkey house. Seems staging a coup is abuse of power, for openers.... military is supposed to be subordinate to elected government in most countries...

Last observation: Is there a Fox News yellow shirt version here? The unbridled hatred from Taksin haters sounds just like Fox addicts rants about that Obama fellow....

Thaksin cheated, broke the law, got caught, convicted and legged it, breaking his solemn promise that he wouldn't.

All the Thakisn lovers come on whining "he's innocent, it's not a good law, everyone's against him, all those who dare post negative comments are politically motivated, fascist Junta fans, he never did wrong and Yingluck's never told a lie in her life".

Get real. He was convicted for one offence and has 15 serious criminal charges waiting in the courts. He tried to bribe the judges and then ran when they wouldn't be bought.

And you lot look up to him like he's some saintly hero of the people and swallow his bullshit PR.

If you want a real debate on the inadequate Thai political and justice systems fine. Or the inherent corruption that pervades all facets of life, regardless of political persuasion. Or the social injustices of the hierarchical patronage system where money and connections are power. Start a thread and we'll discuss. But please don't trot out the Thaksin is innocent fairy stories and expect no reaction - most of us have been here a long time and seen his career unfold. And he's never bothered much about covering the warts.

First, I am not a Thaksin lover, okay? And if you read my post, I didn't say he was innocent either. He and Yingluck are both politicians, so of course they lie. Look to current junta for further examples. You don't go to a whorehouse (which is what Thai politics are, imho) and expect to find stainless virgins... or maybe you do. The judicial process used against Thaksin was done for a facade of "due process" whereas it was a lynching. If applied across the board, no problem. After all you state "inherent corruption that pervades all facets of life, regardless of political persuasion" which would include yellows. Again, I never said Thaksin was "innocent fairy", but bottom line is he got elected, independent international monitoring group reported BOTH sides bribed voters so had negligible effect on outcome. Having coups resets the clock, or even rolls it back, on any evolution towards democracy. I have more faith in the people making the choice rather than the military-industrial elite deciding what's best for them.

Exactly!!! Very well put and I agree 100%! Where are these Thaksin fans ? I can't find them on this board!

I like him and her even more, I think she is a yummy mummy.thumbsup.gif May this help you.

  14. Looking at the garbage on the beaches around Ban Chang, Rayong, Mae Pim right now i would say the figures quoted are per day - NOT per year!!

A clean up at Phala beach alone on Saturday gathered far more than two tonnes, this story is waaaay off!!

It should have read 500 tonnes. But what's another lie in the land of lies? I went to Mae Pim 20 years ago, It was nice then.

I bet there was more than 50 tons of rubbish that blocked the water pumps in Bangkok and once they were cleared they would pump tons of rubbish out into the river which flows into the sea.

  15. The old board were asked to implement the Bt80 a ticket and stuffed about haggling over the price and how it was divvied up. Took too long (SACKED) great stuff.

The new Military board were put in charge and told exactly what is required, how much a ticket, how it will be divvied up and the punishment that is to be given if the distributors fail to heed the pricing.

Best thing that happened, hope it works out from day one.

  16. The President won the election because of one of his promises to bring back the death penalty to persons convicted of drug smuggling.

The President had to follow through and have these people executed for two reasons, one was to keep his promise to the Indonesian people who elected him in and the second was to save face. That is about the bottom line of it.

It really did not matter how many other country's asked for clemency for their citizens, it was not going to happen, to save face.

He really lost face when he authorised the execution of these 8 people and asked for clemency for his people on death row overseas.
