  1. I've put this question on Tripadvisor but without success. Currently living in Chiang Mai but want to head out in February when the smoky season arrives. We're looking for somewhere we can get a little bit of comfort on the beach, ie lounger and umbrella. I know that they've all been removed in Phuket but remain in Hua Hin. So what's the score in the Krabi/Lanta area? Are there any, including those attached to hotels? We're just a bit too old for lying on the sand under the sun and want to try somewhere new.

    Many thanks.

  2. Does anyone know if silk yarn is available in Chiang Mai and if so, where?

I've posted this in the Chiang Mai forum but with no responses. I think most of the CM forum readers are blokes judging by the vast amount of misogynistic posts!

Hopefully I'll have more success with my query here.

  3. I'm not in Chiang Mai yet or I would go into a pharmacy and find out for myself! Don't arrive until next week and just wondered if it is necessary to go to my doctor first or if these maybe available easily when we arrive.

  4. I find the onions in Chiang Mai have a good bit of bite as opposed to those we buy in the UK which are more of a texture than a taste. I agree however that the garlic in CM is bland.

  5. Do you mean soi 6 Moonmuang - the soi that runs through Somphet Market ? I am pretty sure that is where Nice Kitchen restaurant is.

Yes. Good old Tripadvisor, you can always rely on them to foul up a map! It is the soi that runs through Somphet market.

  6. There's a fantastic bakery, for bread at least, in soi 8 Moonmuang. Walk past Somphet Market which will be on your left and it's about 50 meters further on the right hand side, by the turning into Eurana Hotel, opposite Nice Kitchen restaurant. They make excellent wholemeal bread for 50 baht for an 800g loaf.

I presume (and dearly hope) it's still there. Last seen April 2014 but I know how quickly things change in CM!

  7. We use LV. Just bought 5 months travel cover for two people, both with declared health problems, for £247 all in. They are very good should you need to claim too. I needed emergency dental treatment while covered with them and after emailing them to tell them what was happening, they phoned me, on a Sunday to ask if I needed them to pay the dentist straight away or if I wanted to wait until we returned home.

Previously, we insured with Insureandgo and when my husband needed £900 of hospital treatment, we had to pay as they don't offer the money up front and when we put the claim in when we returned, they took 10 weeks to pay.

So, have a look at the small print, and as it's mainly the medical aspect you're looking for and you don't have a lot of spare funds, make sure they will pay for your treatment there and then and not when you return home.

  8. You might find it easier to generate answers if you were a bit more telegraphic in your writing. Not many people will want to wade through all that you've written, which is why more people read short articles than read War and Peace. Brief paragraphs that come to the point quickly tend to be more successful.

I am not with the grammar police (or at least not on duty at the moment), just suggesting what might get more responses.

Not everyone has the attention span of a fish, and those that do are probably too stupid to answer his questions anyway.

  9. Just off to my 6th and final (I hope) appointment at Elite by Panthip Plaza-root canal etc etc.

Very professional, virtually pain free and have all the kit. Not cheap but no decent dentist is here.

Which endodontist is now doing your root canal?

I'm sorry I dont know his name but a thai guy about 30 something with good english, who goes to elite from other clinics at about 5pm every day.

I thought he was their only endo?

At the outset they quoted me 46k and I settled up today at 31.5k as they were able to avoid some procedures they had anticipated. Clearly they are not inventing work unnecessarily.

I find their costs very similar to Spain which surprises me, but far less than UK-which doesnt surprise!

I had a root canal filling and a crown at Elite last December and the total cost was 16,500 baht. You seem to be paying a lot.

  10. I agree. Exceptionally painful and a complete waste of money. It damages the enamel on the teeth which makes them stain really quickly. I really regret having it done.

  11. We lived in CM for 7 months, returning in April. We rented a serviced apartment for 30,000 a month, ate out for 2 lunches and 2 dinners a week (Thai food but restaurants, not street carts) and also went out for a couple of drinks a couple of extra nights a week. Also went out for coffee every morning. We easily came within 50,000 baht a month. As long as you don't want to regularly eat Western food you'll be fine! Enjoy Chiang Mai.

  12. OP welcome to reality. Thailand ain't the cheap place we used to read about in travel books 25 years ago is it?. now, it costs more to live here than in some European cities.

coffee is still cheaper here than anywhere i have ever been; including Central and South America. you must be buying in the wrong places. Duang Dee (for example) if you buy wholesale is dirt cheap. there is plenty of good quality bread around cheap.

oops just noticed you meant "coffee shops". shop around. there are still places that sell very good coffee for 30-40 Baht per cup. avoid Starbucks???? and a place call Tom Tom or something like that that sells coffee that tastes like dirt for 105 Baht per cup!

I'd be interested to learn which European cities are cheaper to live than Chiang Mai. I can't think of any that would match the comfort of Chiang Mai.

There's more to the cost of living than food and dish washing powder. Consider the cost of fuel, both transport and domestic alone.

I can't think of anywhere in Europe where you can use public transport from one side of town to the other for the equivalent of 20 baht either.

Then consider property rental prices ..... I think I'll stick with Chiang Mai thanks.

  13. I've had the frozen yogurt at the place by the Suriwong book store and I think it's great. I talked to the owner once when he had a place at Promenada and he says he uses real yogurt - not the commercial mixes - to make his stuff. Worth seeking out.

I agree, it's divine and a fraction of the fat found in icecream.
