  1. Look up ThaiExpatTV. It's TVo nly, but about 12 british channels, 5 BBC

runs on the internet and much cheaper than a TV subscription/cable service

Is it downloadable? The problem with live TV is that prime time in the UK is stupid o'clock in the morning here in Thailand!

  2. Can anyone advise where I can get a good pedicure? One where the pedicurist will have had some proper training in foot care. I'm fed up of getting ingrowing nails after a Thai pedicure. I've tried a couple of 'nail salons' rather than the usual massage/manicure/hair braid/waxing places but still no luck!

    Thanks ladies!

  3. Chiang Mai Mail have posted on Facebook that the fire was on an upper floor at the back of the building, has now been extinguished and the mall is open for business.

  4. Wow some budget big spender.

    How rude!

This landlord had the same attitude when we were looking for a condo rental and we actually got one in the same block as his and pay just 3,000 baht a month more for a one-bed than his studio which also includes cleaning 3x weekly, electricity and water.

Whilst your budget of 18,000 baht a month may be a touch optimistic, house rentals are considerably less than condo rentals and you'll have no trouble finding something within budget if you're prepared to move your boundaries just a little.

    Good luck.

  5. What confuses me is that a yellow and blue aircon, comfortable taxi costs 120 baht FROM the airport but 150 baht TO the airport. Normally it would be the other way round!

On airport trips I always choose the taxi option for the extra couple of baht and a door to door service.

  6. I know several people who attend those classes.

They learn nothing, and repeat the same levels again and again.

But they do seem to enjoy the classes, despite their failure to learn anything.

The reading/writing starts way beyond any level they managed this past year.

But they are happy with their Ed Visas.

I'm not interested in an Ed Visa - I simply want to learn to speak and read Thai.

  7. I go there. I can recommend them 100%, although many of the Ed Visa places seem to get good feedback.

The teachers I have are all excellent, and they are flexible about learning at you own pace.

The administration side is also very efficient - not always the way here.

Thanks. Do you learn to speak and to read at the same time?

  8. I think its pretty good service experience.

Paperwork is prompt and easy. Classes are fun. About 12 students per class.

2 hours goes by surprisingly quick.

    Thanks!

  9. Has anyone learned Thai at the place in Pantip Plaza and willing to give an opinion. I'm not looking to get an Ed Visa, just a good and effective learning experience for the older student.

I'd like to learn to read and speak Thai, preferably at the same time.

  10. We were picking up our daughter from the airport in November and for some reason there were simply no taxis (it wasn't Loy Krathong) so we had to get a songtaew. When one stopped we told him where we wanted to go and he asked us 'how much'? We'd paid 100 baht to get there so said '100 baht'. He shook his head so we said '120 baht'. Again, he shook his head and said ' no - 90 baht!' He nodded his head at each of us saying '30 baht, 30 baht, 30 baht'

    Result!

  11. Thanks. I'll go to Rajavej tomorrow morning. Can anyone give me a clue how much a physio session is likely to be? Sent from my GT-I8552 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

Khun Took 200 Baht a session.

Khun Took not around today so I saw Khun Gai. Not the best physio experience I've had to be honest - she wanted to do traction on a machine rather than manually which was a waste of time. She then passed me to another (male) physiotherapist who performed manual traction and massage which was better, but still not a patch on UK NHS physio.

By Thai standards, expensive too. 250 baht for a 3 minute chat with an ER doctor and 350 baht for the physio session.

I don't recall Khun Gai. I thought Khun Diow was the best there - by far.

When I first went there it was 170 Baht for about 90 minutes. I remember when the price went to 200. Sounds like it has doubled since then.

I'm paying 350 baht for a 30 minute session. I thought perhaps the first session was more expensive but I've just paid the same for the second session. I think I'm going to try elsewhere as she really doesn't fill me with confidence.

Any further suggestions? Are there physiotherapists in Chiang Mai RAM?

  12. Thanks for the suggestions. I'd thought about getting one of those travel neck supports and changing the 'filling' to rice. Will that go mouldy if I heat it in a microwave?

  13. Does anyone happen to know if/where I can buy a wheat bag in Chiang Mai? I don't know if they have an alternative name in the US and Australia but they're bags containing wheat which are heated in the microwave and applied to the body to relieve pain. Strangely, I didn't think to bring one with me!

  14. Finding a masseuse who's really qualified worries me. We all know how easy it is to 'buy' the qualification! However, as my problem is the reoccurence if two prolapsed discs in my neck, I need traction and manipulation rather than massage. As I've had this before and had various therapies (osteopathy, chiropractor, acupuncture) I know what works and what doesn't. Thanks for the suggestion though, for some people this would be a good idea.

  16. I already know the exercises I need to do (and am doing them) but I really need manipulation too. It's a reoccurence of a problem I had 2 years ago so I know what needs to be done to fix it again.
