  1. I just got a residence certificate 2 weeks ago so I could renew my Thai driving license. Longwood50 gave you the right information. Other forms of proof of residence accepted by immigration are an electric, water, cable TV, or internet bill, or a rental agreement in your name.
  2. If you live South of Pattaya Thai (South Pattaya Rd) then the Facino located on that road across the street from Wat Chai Mongcron is the easiest to get to. Google map "facino pattaya" to see all the locations. Their prices may or may not be lower than elsewhere. You can get a membership card from Facino that will give you a small discount on listed prices.
  3. You can buy an Oppo A57 on Lazada for 1,497 Bt or an Oppo A83 for 1,589 Bt. You should be able to find similar prices at Tuk Com or at the phone shops in the malls like Bic C Extra, Pattaya Klang and 3rd Rd or on Sukhumvit., or at a Lotus's on Pattaya Nua or on Sukhumvit. Those stores also have their own phone shops so you can compare prices. If you don't want to buy a new phone I'll second the advice to go to Tuk Com to buy a second hand phone. Be ready to spend about 2000 Bt on one from Oppo, Asus, Xiaomi, Samsung, One Plus, Sony, or Lenovo. Ask for a 1 year replacement guarantee, which you won't get, but if they give you at 6 month guarantee then buy. Notice these are all Android phones. If you want an iPhone, which are way overpriced in my opinion, you are on your own.

  5. I went through this for a friend who died intestate last Fall. I hired a Thai lawyer (lawyer is a Thai citizen reserved occupation) to guide me through this. It involved papers being sent back and forth to the USA so that they could be signed by my friends brother and two video appearances my me before a Thai probate court to be appointed the executor. This process took several months. Being executor allowed me to access my friend's bank accounts and distribute the funds locally, according to the family wishes. It also allowed me to get the USA Embassy to okay the release the body for cremation and disposal of the remains at sea. Two of our Thai friends took care of all the details of these things, which meant everything went quickly and smoothly once the body was released. All attorney and funeral expenses were paid from my friends funds. I had to spend a great deal of time and effort, but it was worth it knowing that my friend was treated properly following his death. It is my understanding that the nearest or appointed relative, or in your case you as executor in the UK will, can get a Thai attorney appointed the local Thai executor to take care of everything here in Thailand without you having to do it in person, but you need to check this with a Thai attorney in the location where your friend died. To prevent all this mess I strongly recommend that all expats, as well as taking care of legal aspects in their own country, get a valid Thai will that appoints an executor in Thailand. This allows things to proceed smoothly immediately. In my case my 20 year long Thai partner/wife is both my executor and beneficiary. I also have a living will that appoints my Thai partner/wife as the one who will make medical decisions for me if I am unable to make them for myself. Together the cost of these was around 30,000 Bt, and well worth the cost for my peace of mind.
  6. As a legal couple your partner can control your medical care in hospital if you are not able to do it yourself. For instance, if you have no wish to be kept on life support if you can never recover consciousness following a stroke your legal partner can stop you receiving medical care to extend your life in a vegetative state. The same can be done by having a legal Thai living will appointing your partner to these duties but they must present the living will to the hospital first. It is automatic and immediate if you are legally partners. I had a Thai lawyer make me a legal Thai will naming my 20 year long Thai partner my beneficiary and executor, then we made a living will placing her in charge of my care if I am incapable of making those decisions myself. Note that the partner must be present and agree to this and both of you sign the living will in front of witnesses. This decision will extend the same rights to a same sex partnership as to a mixed sex marriage.
  7. Every Factor That Affects the Quality of Your Guinness, Explained From the above link, and I presume the temperature in is Fahrenheit so 4°C to 6°C, which for my taste is too cold. I like mine more around 45° F, but over 50°F is too warm. Keeping it at the right temperature is impossible in Thailand, but it is still better than the local swill even if it gets a little too warm. "TEMPERATURE Incorrect pouring temperature contributes to “90-plus percent of the draft issues you experience at a pub or bar,” McClellan says. Guinness should be poured at 38 degrees, which ensures it isn’t over-carbonated. By the time it’s handed to a customer, the temperature will be somewhere between 38 and 43 degrees."

  9. I had Lasik to correct my vision, very near sighted (>9 dioptes in each eye), in 2002 at age 50 and have never regretted it, but it will make choosing a lens for cataract surgery by the ophthalmologist much harder. I first went to Bumrungrad and was seen by the head of ophthalmology. It was the worst and most rushed eye examination I have ever been given but he scheduled the surgery the next morning. I was very shaken by the exam and his "bedside manner". I walked down to the Nana Hotel, where I used to stay before renting a condominium, to sit and relax. Some of the lobby guys I knew ask what was wrong and when I explained they told me to cancel the surgery and go to Rutnin Eye Hospital. At the Rutnin Eye Hospital I received the best eye exam I had ever had, bar none, then the surgeon told me she wouldn't do the surgery for at least a month. Even though I hadn't been wearing my contacts for 2 weeks in anticipation of the surgery my corneas were still swollen from wearing them for 30 years. The surgeon took her time to answer all my questions before making an appointment for another exam A month later I had the surgery and the results were, and still are amazing. My only regrets aren't asking for Valium in advance since I tensed up during the surgery, which made it harder for the surgeon, and not having anyone to escort me home and stay with me for a couple of days. The lessons from my story: 1: Trust your instincts about the ophthalmologist. Unless you fell completely confident in the surgeon seek another opinion. 2: If you are to remain awake during the surgery consider asking for something like Valium to keep you relaxed and have someone with you to make sure you get home safely.
  10. It's a genetic thing. Depending on which genes you have durian smells bad, if not it smells pleasant. My Thai wife gags at just the barest hint of durian's odor, yet her father, son, and I like it. Go figure! Do you smell an unpleasant odor in your urine after eating aspergras? Depending on which genes you have you can detect the smell of digested aspergras in your urine, or not. Another example is cyanide. Depending on which genes you have cyanide smells like almonds and is easy to detect, but for some it has no odor. I'm a chemist and I used to be given all the jobs involving using cyanide because I can't smell - which of course was exactly the opposite of what should have been done for safety's sake.
  11. Excellent point. When a Canadian neighbor of mine passed away his significant other from the USA was visiting. The partner was emotionally torn apart and didn't know what to do. When I asked if the deceased had a will the answer was yes, and his partner was the executor. My advice was to immediately call the attorney who made out the will and make sure he came to the house before calling the police. Because of the attorney being present nothing went missing and because of the attorney and Thai friends the cremation, etc. went smoothly. I don't know it it is currently in effect but only a couple of years ago if a USA citizen passed away outside of a hospital an autopsy was required. This meant transporting the body to Bangkok for the autopsy. If there was no executor the body was placed in storage until there was one to pay the transportation, autopsy fees, storage fees, and arrange for a cremation or funeral. If a relative of the deceased was appointed the executor IN A THAI WILL and came to Thailand they could pay the fees and take care of disposing of the remains. The worst case was if there was no executor and the family refused to pay. At that point the US Government went after the family for the costs.
  12. To be cremated you need the death certificate, and at least for USA citizens you need a body release form from the US Government. You NEED an attorney to guide you through this if there is no will appointing you as executor, and even the I would recommend having a lawyer to help you. "so he won't be doing any of the actions" If the body is cremated what do you expect to do with the ashes? Just leave them there? Dying is easy. What comes after that is a cluster "sexual act" of government regulations.
  13. I can only tell you what it cost me when I had to pay for a friend of mine here in Pattaya. When he got sick last August he told me he had phenomena and asked me to come help him. When I got there he told me he had been sick for almost 2 weeks. He wasn't eating, only drinking re-hydration drinks at that stage, and was very weak. He was spending both days and nights in his recliner, only getting out to go the bathroom. I tested him the second day and it wasn't phenomena, it was Covid-19. That day he moved to a bed closer to the bathroom. I called every hospital in Pattaya the second day and no beds were available. The same on the third day. Late the third day he collapsed on the way to the bathroom. At 79 I was no longer strong enough to lift him and he was barely conscious and couldn't help. I called the Police Emergency Services and when they arrived they kept my friend awake and got an ambulance that took my friend to the Pattaya City Hospital, a government hospital. There was no charge for the Emergency Services but I tipped them well as thanks for what they did. There were no Covid ward beds available so my friend wound up spending the night outside the emergency room. I must say that he did get excellent emergency treatment even there. The hospital did the best they could but he passed away that night. I had to make a 100,000 Bt deposit in advance on my credit card to get treatment since he had Covid-19 and that was their standard Covid-19 ward charge for non-Thais. The final bill included Emergency treatment and was 122,000 Bt.
  14. If you live in Thailand and don't have a Thai will and an executor then read below carefully! First: Someone needs to contact the deceased's embassy for instructions. Is there a will, and if so, are you the executor? If so go to the attorney who executed the will and they will guide you through everything. The embassy will quickly issue the necessary paperwork to pick up the body from the hospital and cremate the deceased. This will take only days, or perhaps a week. Here is some of what I went through becoming the executor for a friend who died intestate. If there isn't a will and you want to be the executor then get a good lawyer because you will need to fill in lots of legal papers to be appointed executor by the Thai courts, which takes weeks or even months since the family of the deceased needs to agree to you being the executor and paperwork needs to go back and forth between the deceased's family and the Thai lawyer. After that I waited for the papers to get to the court, waited for a two separate court dates for two internet video sessions with the lawyer and the judge, then finally the lawyer could pick up the paperwork from the court for me. It took four-five weeks total just for the courts. Expect the cost to be at least 20,000 Bt. Once you obtain the death certificate you will need and official Thai government translation for the embassy so they can issue the papers needed for the hospital to release the body. The lawyer can guide you through this or even get it done for you. The cremation is then arranged at a temple. Note that in Thailand this is done with a wood fire, leaving lots of wood ashes and the bones, many of which will be intact or in large pieces. Usually the bones are then broken up and the ashes and bone fragments collected. In my case, Thai friends of mine and of my deceased friend helped collect the body and take it to Wat Nop Thong Di Si Puet Ta Ram here in Pattaya for cremation. The next morning they collected the remains of the deceased and arranged for the remains to be given up to the the Chittaphawan College of Phrakhru Winaithornthanakorn Attasaro (Luang Por Poonsub) temple for blessings. These friends gave me some of the remains to send to my friends family then we took the rest to the Forbidden Floating Temple to dispose of in the ocean. If you wish to dispose of the ashes and bones it is generally done into water. The Thai guiding you can help with this. If you wish to ship any of the deceased remains to your home country then you have a whole new world of problems. To ship some of my friends remains to his family in the USA I had to find a funeral home in Bangkok that could arrange this (not strictly legal and not cheap). They could only ship to an international airport directly - no forwarding flights once in the USA. The remains had to be picked up by a funeral home that then shipped them to the family. The cost for the USA funeral home made the cost in Thailand look minuscule.
  15. I have an Android box and a Minix Windows 10 box I was given by a friend. Each has its own bluetooth keyboard and mouse. The Android box is easy to load up with applications that let you view broadcast or cable programs from the USA or England for free but there are problems. With those applications how well you can download depends on the applications web servers. Pay to view applications are less troublesome. I bought mine to watch F1 races from the Sky F1 channel for free. The preshow for qualifying or the race worked fine. When qualifying or the race started the servers were overloaded as more viewers logged in and I started having problems with the feed stopping, starting up, stopping, etc. I finally gave up. What I have found best for me is bittorrents. I download F1 shows and TV shows using my main desktop computer, transfer them to a small portable hard drive, move the drive to the Minix Windows 10 computer and watch them using VLC. This lets me time shift all programs to a time that is convenient for me, stop playback to go to the bathroom, get coffee or a beer, and eat, then finish the playback. Since the Minix Windows computer is only 32 bits, has a small memory for programs, and is fairly slow (still better than my Android box that was newer) it is very limiting. It has a lot of trouble play 1080p MKV videos, and sometimes even 720p MKV ones. Works fine with 720p MPG videos or 480p MKV. I got another Windows 10 desktop that is about 4 years old from a friend. He left a bunch of files on it but once I clean it up I'll use a browser on it to find the bittorrents I want and use utorrent to download them. This way I can watch video files while more download and I won't have to move them from one computer to the other. Another advantage of buying an inexpensive Windows 10 desktop to hook up to the TV is that you can add an android emulator for windows 10, like BlueStacks, to your computer and use Android applications as well as Windows 10 applications.

  18. "Inasal", marinated Filipino bar-b-q chicken, is the clue that he is asking about the Philippians even though "Pinas" is a region in France. Actually I had a friend who used to bring back lots of USA food stuffs, canned or bottled, to Thailand when ever he visited the Philippians. I suspect if the OP checks he can find most of what he wants in grocery stores or online.
  19. Google Translate says this is a Pattaya City Hospital post. Here is what the translation says. The vaccinations are from 15 June - 31 July 2022. The times are 11:00-15:00. 20. You need to get traps installed. For the sinks you want a PVC P/J trap like this: P/J Water Trap fo Sink Do NOT get one of these bottle traps, they corrode out: Metal Bottle Trap that Will Corrode Out For the shower you may or may not have one of the very shallow Thai style shower water traps. If you do have one the water can evaporate in a few days so you need to make sure you pour water into it frequently. It may also have corroded away. If you have one that has corroded or if you don't have one then this can be placed in the shower drain with a minimum of work: Thai Style Shallow Water Trap for Shower
  21. The Thai attorney who created the original will should be the one to see you through the necessary probate process. The probate court will verify that you are of good character and will follow the wishes of the deceased, then give you a court order to the bank so you can access the deceased's funds for distribution according to the directions in the will. Assuming the above description fits you the probate process should be quick and easy.
  22. On my first trip to Cambodia in 2000 you could buy a very cheap bundle of cannabis leaves at the local fresh markets to use as a seasoning in cooking. It was very common traditional seasoning in many SEA nations, including Thailand, until the reefer madness syndrome was embraced by the governments. I'll add that although it was probably illegal you could get cannabis (the smoking kind) added to your food at Happy Herbs on Sisowath Quay in Phnom Penh. Normally you wouldn't get high eating the food but a friend ordered a sauce bowl of the powered herb, ate it on garlic bread, and thus consumed a much larger amount than is usually added as seasoning. The result was a night of his antics I'll never forget, but he could never remember.
  23. Ever hear of Oliver Twist? Well, that is what your friend encountered. The children begging are not in the care of their parents or relatives. They are bought or rented by brokers from their families and passed on to Oliver Twist type mangers. Many are illegally trafficked from Cambodia, Lao, or Burma. Their sole job is to get money for their managers by begging, and being annoying is one way of increasing their income. I wouldn't be surprised if the annoying foreigner was part of the scheme and his job was to increase the amount of money your friend, or you, gave the child. You should report them to the police but don't do that. If you do don't be surprised if nothing happens, or you even get into trouble because the police are part of the scam. The best thing to do is just walk away. If the child becomes a problem walk into a bar or restaurant, and if necessary spend your last 100 Bt there. The beggar has to meet a quota for the night so they can't afford to spend time waiting for you to come back out.
  24. I've lived in Thailand long enough to know that Thais only work on their roads during tourist season, then take the non-tourist season off to rest up.
  25. Come anyway. Walking street is a mess but who cares? You have beer bars all over Pattaya and Jomtien including Beach roads in Pattaya and Jomtien, Soi 6 Pattaya, 2nd road Pattaya, Soi Buakhao Pattaya, and Tree Town on Soi Buakhao. There are easy to get to and less expensive go-go bars in LK Metro on Soi Buakhao close to Tree Town and at least one go-go in Jomtien. Then there are the gentlemen's clubs, ranging from outrageously expensive fancy new ones to older ones with pre-covid prices. If you can't have fun in Pattaya today then you don't know how to have fun.
