Q: Where does tourist money come from?
A: Outside Thailand.
Q: Where do tourists spend their money?
A: Inside Thailand.
Q: How does money from other counties spent in Thailand, benefit the Thai economy?
A: Countless way... it would seem.
Q: Why then would you want to discourage tourists from staying as long as they want?
A: Hummmmmm.... let me get back to you on that...
Per Wikipedia: "The World Tourism Organization defines tourists as people 'traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes"'.
So whether for one year or otherwise a tourist has a finite period of stay else one is no longer considered by the Government of Thailand as a tourist.
Granted that some people use this as a way to live indefinitely in Thailand and technically are not tourists under the definition you cite but - assuming that one is not working in Thailand (which would be illegal) and therefore not taking money from the Thai economy internally, they are still bringing money into Thailand from the outside. So crack down on the long term squatters in other ways if you really want.
I'm still asking what is wrong with welcoming visitors who just want a warm winter? Let them stay for 3 or 4 months without silly, useless AND dangerous visa running every couple weeks. Might be a way to actually attract more visitors.
From my observation, the entire visa system in Thailand is archaic and aims at controlling the wrong things. I can understand that a country wants to know who is in their country and is not a citizen, I can understand that a government wants to control - even tightly control - working by non-citizens but to discourage long term visitors who simply add to an economy, I do not understand.

In an area where there are bombings/grenades-thrown almost nightly, it takes the police & EOD-team an hour, to arrive at the scene ?
That should make everyone feel safer.

What kind of punishment does he get from this? Does anyone know?
Less than he'd get in Russia?

Much of what is being financed must be the street festivals that are occupying Asoke, Sala Daeng and wherever... so who "allowed" these to be erected? Just sayin'...

All the energy that Suthep & Co put into dancing around the issue and doing political contortionism, if they put that energy into reforming the Dems into a more inclusive party with progressive reform policies that improve the lives of the poorest in society etc. they could campaign in an election and stand a fair chance. It amazes me that they don't try this legit route to power, especially now that PTP are reeling from the rice/amnesty problems. Sometimes you have to let go and move with the times, for the good of the nation. In any case, their pigheaded stubbornness is painful to behold, and the "my way or the highway" philosophy does not belong in the political sphere in the 21st century. They should re-brand their image and policies, and enter the electoral fray like everybody else does.
But that is far to sensible a strategy and outside of the box for Thai politicians who prefer to do the same thing over and over again, and guess what, always the same result.
If they ever did take this route it would also force the PTP and other parties to clean up their acts. But simply pure fantasy I guess.
It would take time and they arn't prepared to wait. im sure they could do it in say 2 elections time because by then PTP im sure would have imploded anyway.
Besides everyone here is on a timeline of ASAP to grab the power because no one has a clue exactly when the music will stop here, when it does this could all seem like just a walk in the park compared.
...and there is a rush to be in power when the high speed train deals start to get handed out. Probably gonna be some cash flowing when that happens.

>>"Police found the wrecked and overturned bus and the wrecked van in the middle of road. The injured had already been sent to hospital."
30 people taken to hospital and the police were not there yet? Wow, those police are right on top of things happening in Chiang Mai...

You have to be crazy to want to ride a bicycle on the roads in Thailand.
why, due to one isolated incident?
you enjoy the sofa and make sure you wear a helmet navigating the stairs.
Ill enjoy the 100k i ride a week thank you.
100K a week, when do you sleep??
It's pretty easy to ride at 20 km/hour... so... if my arithmetic is on, it would take about 5 hours to ride 100 kilometers, leaving plenty of time to sleep. I just finished an 800km ride in 8 days with 50 other people in southern Thailand. All made it safely. Still no excuse for the morons behind the wheel.

I think the driver is totally stupid , the car is still there and I dont think it will take long time for the police to find the owner of the truck .... hard to face responsibilities , specially when you just murdered a young boy who had all his life in front of him ... sad ...
The driver made a bad move and deserves blame but the kid also made a stupid move, "traveling at a high rate of speed" apparently too fast to evade a potential problem. That's why they call it defensive driving. Sad story.

So they want to get rid of the one tax that actually brings in money and is disproportionately taxing the rich. I tend to be a conservative but the luxury tax in Thailand is one I agree with, without it Thailand's high society would pay basically nothing in taxes. There are multimillion dollar businesses here operating as "nonprofits" (I know a couple but will not name them) and cheating the tax man is a national sport. Compounding the problem, Thailand is a cash society so there is basically no way to track most transactions.
I just want to know how they plan to make up the revenue. Again, I am as conservative as they come but in this case I disagree taking this tax away.
Hair Club guy, people will avoid and evade taxes when it costs less to NOT pay than it does TO pay. In other words, if taxes are lower, people are more likely to pay them and move on. Avoid the risk and trouble of not paying. If taxes are extremely high, people will figure out ways to not pay. If the goal of government is to collect the maximum amount of tax revenue, then lower tax rates will accomplish it. If the goal is to oppress and control their citizens and guests - well then, that is what it is. Heinecke is right, stimulate business and bring more overall business in.

Let's see... we implement programs that have been tried... oh I don't know millions of times before... that have never, ever in the record of any economic interaction of human history worked... but this time... we are so f*&*ing brilliant... that WE will make it work this time.
The endless stream of morons that find their way into government is absolutely astonishing.

I've learned in Thailand not to be too offended by personal questions, even from officials. It seems to be the Thai way on many things - beginning with my neighbors asking, "bai nai?", every time I went out. Or telling me, "oh, you look fat". Part of it is just the way it is, so I'd say biting your lip is a good course to follow.
I've been asked the whole 'Why are you not married to your girlfriend yet?' too. I felt like saying 'none of your f****** business!'.
I wouldn't advise anyone to actually do that. All the same, It's a really unprofessional question to ask someone in a consulate or embassy. (In the context of applying for a tourist visa)
I'm going to Hong Kong to get my non B next month. I guess I'll prepare to bite my lip. -
Damn that pesky competition thing...

Maybe if the import tax on luxury vehicles was not so ridiculously high the problem might not exist.
Duh...

Maybe someone should tell them that if the tax were a "reasonable" rate - buyers would just pay it and low and behold, surprise of surprises, imports would increase, 100% of taxes would be paid on 100% of cars imported - all because it would be easier to pay the tax than to avoid it. When you have an absurd tax rate - again... surprise, surprise - people will try to figure out ways to avoid paying it. All politicians should be required to take Econ 101 before being eligible for any office.

Many felt it in Mae Sai and my wife was in Tachilek and they felt it there as well. I was in a 7 in Mae Sai and the floor was bumping around and the boxes on the shelves were dancing a bit. It lasted maybe 15-20 seconds here. Hope no one was hurt over in Chiang Rai.
