  1. Nobody can argue with the fact that Thailand is hot in April, of course. But the heat index in the evenings? And are the reported figures relevant to city dwellers? Most people live in large conurbations these days. Up north, in the sticks, well I guess I can understand why folk are left scratching their heads- it's always blisteringly hot. Air temperature has been considerably hotter night and day in Surat City for around 1 month. 40 degrees is a rarity down here, and yet it happened multiple times last month. Cities seem to retain the heat in the evening. Yesterday, the weather was very slightly cooler, and for me it made a heck of a difference. Personally, I am getting used to it, but adjustment was a bit of a shock to the system.
  2. If it's a matter of survival, the options are: return to UK, move to Flip, tighten belt, supplement income somehow. If life is truly tough somehow we must make the best of it, which may simply be recognizing we jumped the wrong way and have to face the consequences with equanimity- tough ask I know. We are not getting pension upgrades in Thailand- end of.
  3. Sad to say, the changes that the world leaders struggle, but fail, to achieve are simply too little too late. I guess nature will have it's way. For the average older Brit/American, etc, who doesn't have to be here, the best advice would be go home. Doubly quick if you are not very healthy, or not backed by truly substantial assets. If you can't go home, don't just get fit- get very very fit.
  4. The weather maps show around mid 30's for Pattaya by day. It doesn't seem to be that hot. Maybe this time of the year the sun is blisteringly hot. Plus, the evening heat appears to be very challenging. Surat City hit 40 yesterday- that's hot! Even hotter in many other places.
  5. Looking at the weather records, it seems to me that the evenings must be particularly uncomfortable. In a building it could be 33 or more up to midnight with high humidity too. Of an evening, a sensible strategy could be to wander the streets in tight fitting swimming briefs, perhaps in bright lemon, or shock pink. Could make some interesting new friends too. I think, on the other hand, it's probably best to visit a well cooled den of ill repute and stay there all night.
  6. I think it highly likely the Brit was scammed based on the location- absolutely notorious, as others have also mentioned. I think there will only be one result in court though.
  7. As the virus mutates so the vaccine needs to be updated. When an updated virus tackles the mutation it was designed for, immunity is near 100%. Make no mistake, all the western vaccines provided very high protection from serious illness and death in older age groups.
  8. Sadly young people were most at risk of TTS, but as we know now were the least likely to die from Covid. It's debatable whether they even needed a vaccine. Still, it's easy to be wise after the event. The AZ jab saved countless old lives. TTS is a very rare reaction to so called vector vaccines. Overall, the AZ vaccine was as safe/dangerous as any of them.
  9. According to some on this forum, the padlock feels hot but actually isn't. Yes, I haven't seen many dogs around lately.
  10. Dodging the question! A career in politics beckons. lol.
  11. Personally, I'm making a point of carrying on as normal, including at least half an hour out in the sun every day. Normal for me means exercising every day, and at least 2 sessions in the gym a week. I'm living it. I do find it difficult sitting in the heat for hours on end though, but air con is a double edged sword, best limited to an afternoon nap and overnight. I do envy the idle rich. Just curious about the attitude of some that's all!
  12. So what's your angle regarding the hot spell in Thailand. From my angle, you seem to be saying it's not happening, or perhaps that it feels hot, but is not a physiological fact.
  13. The heat index even in Surat Thani is 48, with an air temperature of 39. Up country and in many other parts I think the heat index could be as much as 54. I've recently started taking some readings. Interestingly during the day my readings tally almost exactly with weather reports, but are up to 5 degrees warmer after 6pm and throughout the evening. I think it's what is happening in the evenings, especially in urban areas that is probably contributing to heat tiredness, and the very real sense that there is a heatwave.
  14. Agreed - it's a mistake to look only at air temperature during the day. The heat index is still high midnight and beyond, perhaps as much as 40 degrees. Anyway, all these severe heat warnings aren't being issued for the fun of it. It's not a heatwave though, rather a peculiar relentless heat that has the same effect. In a country defined by hot, humid weather you don't need much extra to create a problem. Poster Dinsdale has provided the most succinct and factually accurate info though imo.
  15. Agreed. Mind you, I assume you didn't get here by canoe! It's all of us, now- all as guilty as each other.
  16. Pension rate starts at the time your pension becomes payable as far as I know. (Some people can choose to delay and get a little extra).
  17. BBC world service is reporting prolonged extreme heat in terms of the heat index, which has recently been 50 and above- that's dangerous, and yes imo the evenings are so hot, although it does depend what sort of property you live in.
  18. Nah! Nahhhhhh! You know I've been here 20 years and never knew that! What an informative posting- clever chap, eh!
  19. How do you relax in the evening? wrestle bears! It must be hellishly hot up north. I tracked my home temperature with reported figures, and they stayed remarkably close up until about 6pm, but while reported figures went down fairly quickly, the temp in my house and outside stayed pretty high. At 8pm it was still 36, and at midnight an unbelievable 33. Even now the 'feel like' is likely around 40 given 80% humidity. Current example 12:31am : weather report 28 degrees/ 88% humidity/ feels like 34 my house 33
  20. The usual story is that someone they know reports them due to careless talk : cue lovely old song 'Whispering Grass', covered by 2 members of 1970's comedy series 'It aint half hot mum', which seems somewhat apt at present. Wise words :
  21. The most likely scenario would be that the pension reverts back to its original level, and overpayments would be deducted at a rate of 5% or less of monthly entitlement, which would be deducted at source.
