  1. Keeping on this, I was comparing Vegas vs. Phoenix and overall Phoenix seems the better city.

Vegas suburb Henderson does look quite attractive though, and unlike my other choices, both lower cost for buying (renting not so much) AND low crime.

So can't rule out the Vegas area yet.

They both have serious climate and water issues though.

It seems they will be hit by climate change related / water crises in this century.

Phoenix is already hotter than ever due to local human development, and it was already too hot.

I guess it might be silly for young people to buy in that region but for older people, the question is when will it become unlivable and will it have much impact in their lifetime.

Renting seems OK ... but then you've got the issue of rent increases pricing you out ... not fun for very old people.

Of course if people start fleeing based on the water, etc. then rents should go down. rolleyes.gif

As far as Arizona expanded Medicaid, there is some republican noise to tighten the restrictions, not about assets, but about things like work searches and limiting for 5 years (not a problem). I actually doubt they will get national approval for most of their tightening, but it will be interesting to watch.

The update on Arkansas is interesting. What I am hearing now is that they probably WILL be keeping it (the decision will made next year) but perhaps with some tightening like requiring a payment of 2 percent of income ... not a problem.

So I'm looking again at West Memphis, Arkansas.

It is high crime but there sure are some cute houses for sale for amazingly low prices.

Albuquerque is off my radar now.

So I guess the good news is that if repatriating under age 65, I might be down to three major choices:

Phoenix / Vegas (Henderson probably) / West Memphis Arkansas.

BTW, I am familiar with living in the SOUTH so I'm not so worried about culture shock with that in Arkansas.

For those who haven't lived in the SOUTH, it really is different.

Climate-wise, overall, West Memphis easily beats Phoenix and Vegas, even though it does have a winter.

If repatriating over 65, then the choices get wider, and more about Florida.

Check out St. George Utah nice scenery as good as Sanoma at a fraction of the cost. Good climate. Near beautiful Zion national park and not far from Vegas if you like a weekend jaunt. Beautiful red rock park only a few miles from town with paved roller blading or hiking trails. This town is a sleeper deserving serious consideration.

  2. RiP the poor cyclist.......

Anyone riding bikes on Thailands roads are contenders for death or serious injury......

Thai drivers do not care about cyclists!

"Bike for Dad" on Friday...........I hope they shut all roads down that will be used!

There are many good roads for cyclists in Thailand. In the Chiang Mai area I ride about 500k a week and feel reasonably safe. However, riding on those highways around Bangkok would scare me to death.

In Nakhon Phanom and in the centre of Udon Thani I actually feel safer on my bicycle than on a motorbike. Vehicles seem to give me more room. But, sadly, on the main roads and highways outside of towns and cities I would say that an incident like this could happen anywhere, anytime in Thailand.

I cycled here and I ride motorbike and unquestionably motorbikes are much safer don't kid yourself. Not only does the light add visibility but you can keep speed with vehicles thereby reducing possible contact. And then of course there are the dogs. I have little desire to cycle here.

  3. Not going to join the TV speculator crew, just very sad indeed. Guy is on holiday, girl on back, all good and wham, done.

    RIP

Sad? Perhaps. Stupid, more than likely. If you look at the picture, there doesn't seem to be much, if any, damage to the car, or the bike, so apparently he wasn't going very fast. At least not fast enough to kill him from the impact. That pretty much narrows it down to slamming his head on the pavement, which means STUPID, as if he was wearing a helmet, even a cheap one, chances are, at that slow of speed, it might have saved his life.

So, to change your statement somewhat...."Guy is on holiday, girl on back (no helmet on head), all is (not) good and wham, done.

Anyone who get on a bike, and I don't care if it's a Wave, Sonic or Gold Wing, and doesn't wear a helmet, deserves whatever happens to them. I won't even drive my PCX or Forza to the 7-11 just half a kilometer from my house without putting my helmet on first.

Give it a rest Clouseau. The guy is dead is that not enough for you?

  4. Like many things else American, the quality of health care depends a great deal on where one lives. We certainly have never waited weeks for any kind of appointment up in my neck of the woods. Most times we see a doctor with a couple of days unless it is urgent and then get seen very quickly.

Funny thing is that in Canada as mentioned I can get into see a doctor in hours in any major center. In the U.S. and we are talking Santa Monica or Newport Beach it takes days or weeks to see a GP. The GP is the first line of defense in correcting the problem before it becomes more serious. The US health care system is not effective for average Americans. I wish Americans would wake up and see how their media and the corps dumb them down and feed them misinformation to pad their wallets.

"It is rare that a simple matter of patient choice causes an international flap.
But that's what happened when 60-year-old Danny Williams of St. John's, Newfoundland, decided to go to the U.S. for heart surgery.
That's because Williams isn't just any old Newfoundlander -- he's the premier of Canada's easternmost province, the head of its government.
The disclosure Tuesday that Williams was in an undisclosed location in the U.S., having an undisclosed procedure that he couldn't get in Newfoundland, brought catcalls from both sides of the border."
    cheesy.gif

What's the point here? You can get heart surgery in any major Canadian city and most provinces. So a guy from Prairieville North Dakota won't go to larger centers for surgery? If a guy has the money he can go anywhere in the world and get surgery. Its only uniformed dummies that think the fat insurance based American system superior to every other country that has evolved from it.

  5. Amazon Fire TV Stick $25.

Stalker sub for a year $105

    Total about Bt4600.

Gets you 700+ premium channels, including all of Sky Sport, BT Sport and loads of US channels.

Plugs in your HDMI socket, connects to Wifi and away you.

I'm watching the Test right now on Sky Sports 2.

Added: There are free options, some of which leech off stalker, but they are unreliable and a pain in the behind if you are new to Kodi, so don't let anyone convince you otherwise.

There are also other paid subs, but I've never found Stalker anything but completely dependable. Also have it on my phone and tablets.

Yes but I have android box and I have sky 1 2 3 4 5 , all bt, fox, ufc, football, u.s. football, basketball, hockey, all movies, tv shows, archived or live... it is all in the software as well as the hardware but like i mentioned I don't pay a dime amd have access.

  6. Would have done camera shoots differently and, for the trailer, drawn the viewer in by more meaningful, developing transitions. I've co-produced a documentary, but it's only one person's opinion, mine, and maybe others' interest would be captivated.

Agreed I would have opened with a shutter blowing in the wind. And moves slowly inside from there. Also some changes in lighting. I did a bit of film work in the past. Here's a link to a bit of editing:)

  7. I actually believe Russia in this instance.

Don't believe I have ever said that before.

I am not very knowledgeable in this issue, so I am honestly asking,

why would Turkey shoot a Russian plane with out provocation, What is the Up side for Turkey?

I can see what Putin is getting out of this, in the case of this threads ,an argument for the need of missiles , and who knows what other concessions to get kim to calm down, But what is Turkey getting out of this?

This is retaliation for bombing the oilfields which ISIS is using to sell bootleg oil to Turkey for 10 a barrel. It is very profitable. Additionally, this ends any co-operation between NATO and Russia in Syria which was about as probable as a Palestinian peace deal. You should be asking the question why did the attacks occur in France which led to the bombing of Syria and the introduction of ground troops. People need to realize ISIS is created to get rid of Assad and anything else is just collateral damage.

  8. Dennis I think you could actually do better with this concept in Chiang Mai or Khon Kaen or similar larger Thai cities. Phuket certainly would be a good area although it may have this already. Sadly Pattaya comprises long termers such as older falangs often with sex addictions or alcohol problems. You might do better with a beer bar filled with inflatable dolls. cheesy.gif

  9. I would not trust the accuracy of any of the numbers in this story.

Money lenders are normal in any country, and Thailand is no exception. Everybody knows that if you borrow money from a loan shark that you have to pay it back or you either lose your security if its a secured loan, or you get hurt if its an unsecured loan.

There are ethical and unethical money lenders, sadly the ethical ones get burned when they learn the hard way that lending money to people who cannot afford to pay it back is a bad business model unless you can give the client a good incentive to pay up. The threat of losing land is a good incentive, and so is the threat of violence. Most lenders never want to resort seizing security or breaking bones, but to be successful in the business you have to demonstrate your willingness to do so if the need arises.

I know a man who loaned money to lots of poor villagers in the hope that it would help them, of course he didn't take any real security and there was no implied threat of violence... you can guess what happened, some were making repayments at the beginning and some were not, when the ones making repayments learned that nothing happened to the ones who didn't pay they all stopped paying. He lost all his money and lost the respect of the people too.

Anyone who has been in Thailand for any amount of time realizes few pay back their loans. However, this is not reason to allow unscrupulous lenders to steal land from the poor. The man you know sounds somewhat a fool. He should have just given them grants rather than loans. Even the banks in Thailand are learning this with all the car repossessions.

And yes strangely Thais will look at this as weakness but maybe because they have been abused by loan sharks for so long. They also look at two week farang millionaires as fools too or the bigi boys buying the houses for the Thai gals.
