Drug crackdown in nation's jails

Corrections Department chief Natthee Jitsawang said yesterday his office would join forces with the Army and police on Wednesday to wipe out drug dealing in five prisons.

The 300-strong Big Cleaning Days force, with medical backup and sniffer dogs, will carry out urine tests in Klong Prem, Bangkwang, Khlong Pai and Khao Bin prisons and the Central Correctional Institution for Drug Addicts.

They will also look for mobile phones used to order narcotics.

Natthee said he had instructed prisons nationwide to conduct similar searches at the same time.

Health plan to make Thai children healthier and more intelligent

BANGKOK: -- The Public Health Ministry yesterday approved a Bt1.2 billion plan to raise the average intelligence level of Thai children and to help them grow healthier and taller.

The plan aims to lift the Intelligence Quotient (IQ) of Thai children to average scores of 110 [iQ denotes the ratio of a person's intelligence to the statistical norm] and- reflecting their good health- have them standing 175 centimetres tall.

Currently, Thai children have an average IQ score of 103 and an average height of 165 cm.

Public Health Minister Witthaya Kaewparadai revealed the plan was launched in response to findings that Thai children's physical and intellectual development was still lower than international standards. It will be based on improved nutrition and care starting from pregnancy.

According to ministry records, over 90,000 babies are born underweight or below 2,500 grams each year. Malnutrition during pregnancy was blamed as the main cause, leaving many babies lacking the much-needed vitamin A, iron, folic acid, and zinc.

Malnourished babies often die within a month after birth because of low blood sugar level, or end up suffering from pneumonia and delayed physical development.

To stop such problems, Wittaya said the public health department would hand out free multi-vitamins to 800,000 pregnant women through hospitals across the country. Multi-vitamins, containing essential minerals as folic acid, zinc, vitamin A, calcium, iodine, will be provided to the women, one tablet per day for nine months.

The multi-vitamins would reduce the risk of premature birth, boost the mother's immune system, improve hormone growth, strengthen bones, lower the risk of toxaemia, and develop nerve cells.

The public health department has also teamed up with administrative organisations nationwide to help encourage children's emotional and intellectual development. The department's director general Dr Chatree Banchuen said his agency would also teach parents about how to develop children's learning skills.

To babies born this Saturday, the public health ministry will give a cartoon-version of "Phra Mahachanok" - His Majesty's best selling book. The book is based on a traditional Jakata story from Buddhist scripture. The gift celebrates National Children's Day, which falls on the second Saturday of January every year.

In a related development, the Department of Disease Control says it is boosting its fight against infectious disease among children in kindergartens and nurseries - especially hand-foot-mouth disease, pneumonia, and diarrhoea - diseases that affect over 100,000 children, aged under five years, nationwide.

The department will provide training for nannies in disease prevention in nurseries and kindergartens. It will also produce 2,000 cartoon books telling stories for children about disease prevention.

my 2 cents: I think marijuana should be de-criminalized worldwide. In Massachusetts they just legalized up to 1oz. You get a citation for about $100.00 I smoked for about 10 years and feel that it's no worse than booze which I also stopped. Both, I feel, simply make you less efficient in work/play/sex/life in general. We waste so much cash trying to arrest people who smoke weed.

But, I think hard drugs users/dealers should be punished to the hilt. No dealth penalty but definitely 3 strikes and you're a lifer.

I would like the death penalty for the following offenders: child molesters, murderers, rapists. One strike for child rapists and murderers. Use DNA evidence to avoid killing the innocent. I also believe in the Texas system of carrying a concealed weapon. Less people try to rob you if they think you're packing. Yeah there are still incidents but the criminals ALWAYS have a gun. They shouldn't make it hard for law abiding folks to own guns. They DO SO in Massachusetts. I also like the castle law that Texas has adopted. Someone tries to rob your house, blow them away Dirty Harry style.

White collar thiefs like Madoff and the Enron boys and Bernie Ebbers; life.

Fined the other day - No licence, and some garbage about doing a U-turn.

Anyway, the <snip> took my expired Australian drivers licence... and said he said "I'll wait for you here"

I just went home and tore, chewed on it until it was totally unrecognisable and spat it off the balcony.

Who knows what germs I ended up with.

I didn't go back to the cop or to the police station and don't plan to either.

So, what happens now??

Do they hunt me down and put me in jail???

Do they list me at immigration so when I return to Thailand it comes up after they've sighted my passport?

A Thai friend told me that because the motorbike is in my girlfriends name, the fine will come up when she renews the motorbike licence and she can just say she doesn't know who I am and that she hires the motorbike out to stupid farangs.

they took my name, but never had any problem returning

So, its clear as mud, if he gets 40 years & it isnt reduced, he will be doing 40 years.

with regard to the above the info I have been told, and I have seen in Europe not Australia is that they regard serving a sentence as being possible in the community.

Theey have worded the agreement, the one I saw as " remaining under prision supervison..." or something like that

there is also a sort of secret clause that 2 member country have objected to which basicly states " once they are back home we can do whatever we like with them..."

it is not worded like that, but that what it does mean

meaning they can be let out whenever it suits.

This most definatly is done in holland, and countrys close by.

In holland in particular nobody will serve behind bars anything near what is handed down here.

Simelar to UK. But there they may have a ankle braclet around their ankle ( obviously) which resticts them not really at all.

I sometimes stay in touch with some people I used to visit.

In all my years of seeing people ( I have stopped seeing rapists, child molesters, it is just the too much , even for me!) I have only met a handful of those who are truly sorry and do not jump straight back into it.

I have even bumped into several back here. About 4 if I remember correctly- all dressed well, one driving a nice new SUV! One in that soi cowboy when I was buying fish and chips

I remember one, a man from a place called the merseyside where many do seem to come from, saying to me he prayed they would never make it legal and how much he loved thailand because " they will never get me again , I know who to call..." One even makes generous donatation's to my/our little charity now from here!

On paper he should never be allowed back here ever again, I think he, accordingly should still be under some sort of supervison....he certainly did not seen to be that way

but I see all this as evidence that things are not working as they should, hence my opinions.

i've never cared if the death penalty works or if it acts as a deterrent or not. i don't think that is the objective of the death penalty. no need to dangle that in front of people as a reminder, everyone knows the difference between right and wrong and everyone knows you will be punished (to different degrees) for breaking the law.

i support the death penalty in CERTAIN cases because i feel certain scum gave up their right to live. having said that, it's not appropriate for all crimes while other crimes demand the death penalty.

crime is hugely attractive for some people- almost so much I can see why they get into it

I have spoken to rich career criminals who have not seen 1 day in jail- they are not in the minority

and even those who go to jail for such a short time and improve their criminal skills

in prison here I have talked with men who have done well over 30 plus before getting caught, and the reason they get caught is usually a tip of or some mistake- not by police smarts.Usually they are not the brightest of people, but they succeed time and time again.

In some of those places you can actually throw your own rocks at people when they are burried in the sand neck deep....if this was televised throughout the world & it was compulsory for school age children to watch, then I am sure we would have less takers that are willing to act as drug mules.

I think the death penality has worked in some way but agree that its obviously not a 100% deterrant. Lets face it, people that jam needles into their arms on a daily basis & shoot a substance with an unknown quality of drug into their veins must not give a dam_n about death anyway.

I once saw a woman stoned to death and a man have his head chopped of, he backed back a little and it caught his throat....could you do that to someone for what they had done?
