  1. Can't use quotes on mobile... About the heater: 1996 Toyota Corona with very basic air con, using a plastic lever rather than fancy digital like today... If you'd slide it all the way left, the air would come out around maybe 25C,useless in the normal heat but oh so pleasant in those 2 Winters. It was a rental, the last brand new one... Drove 120,000 km in 3 years, that put a look on the agent's face :-P

  2. Late 90's there were two cold Winters when I had to turn on the heat in my car to go to work at 7am...in Bangkok! Two blankets and a jogging suit in bed, the car had a heater but not the house. Would be nice to have a chilly Christmas and New Year again, the last 2 years were too warm for my taste.

  3. Or... Three possible scenarios that don't involve hatred of foreigners:

    1. You gave a 20 and thought it was a 50

    2. She got a 50 and thought it was a 20

    3. She gave you 50 Baht worth if produce instead of 20

Oh,or maybe she's just a mean market seller who'd cheat locals and foreigners on equal opportunity... I've found those in other places too.

  4. Okay, so the 3 major economic powers of Asia (Japan, Korea, China) lose their competitiveness because they lack English skills? But they got to where they are on even lesser proficiency, so what? The problem with Thailand is more a lack of inventiveness and scientific education, not to mention the caste system and rudimentary civic education outside of Bangkok. Believe in Karma (rewards and punishment come in a future life, not in the present one), obey the authorities, learn by rote. It doesn't matter what language you use if your brain has been shackled from birth.

That article is just advertising with an agenda. ---> trash bin.

  5. It's probably a port forwarding issue. Best way around is to get your own ISP service & Google port forwarding plus the router model for the right steps. Basically you make a hole in the router firewall to get peers to connect to you. You may have to add permissions for the torrent client to your Windows firewall as well.

  6. "... to marry their Thai girlfriends, most of whom are from the Bangkok middle-class and obviously have no intention of deceiving anyone for money."

This and at least one reference to Thai women as "Thai girls" in the OP makes me believe that this is a sarcastic article written by a white man.

I think that you will find that the author Prae Sakaowan is actually a Thai female,

Thanks for the link, so I guess I was correct since the profile says that Prae is a fictional character. It should really be highlighted in the article, even though it's obvious from the writing style.

  7. I don't get it. If you don't like moaners, go back to your own country if you think people there don't moan.

Moaning is what makes Thailand and TV so great (and there may even be a sexual pun hidden here). Why don't you just focus on your good things in life instead of moaning about moaners (calling something a rant is still just moaning in an angry fashion.

  8. Just to clarify the peak load times, and whether or not the sun is shining at those times. PLT are from 7am till 11pm for industrial and densely populated areas, and the sun is up at decent angles from around 8am till 5am for Thailand. That's just over 50 percent, which is not bad.

The government needs to find a policy that enables a mix of renewable sources, including wind, water, biogas etc which are available when solar is not.

At the same time I feel that proper waste loss reduction could achieve even more. Electricity is still too cheap in Thailand to make efficiency and renewable generation attractive, that's why subsidies are necessary.

Ultimately I feel that these measures are only for show, to satisfy some UNFCCC or other global environmental agencies requirements. And of course, make money for political insiders.

PS: I never thought that Thailand is particularly sunny, it's hot and humid yes, but much of the days the skies are overcast or hazy. Best places for solar are where they put the large space telescopes ;-)

  9. Truck driver allegedly falls asleep and the best idea so far is to talk to the bus operators? I got a few more ideas:

Policeman hit by speeding Ferrari - talk to police use pavement more often

Benz ploughs into bus stop - talk to commuters to be more athletic and jump.

Hitler all over Thailand - talk to Westerners about the origin of the swastika (oh wait, that one is real).

Seriously, where do they find these people?

  10. Apparently the article inside the magazine was worth reading and not glorifying at all. A shame that political correctness and fear of stimulating controversy are dumbing down the general public.

There is an important message overlooked right there on the cover: Evil does not always come with an ugly face. A stark contrast of appearance and actions. No silly mustache, no fancy uniform, no crazy hair.

  11. Stop bringing your western values to Thailand... they don't work here.

Hitler is just a historical figure, no worse than Chairman Mao.. so get over it.
Nothing to do with values; all to do with ignorance and hubris

And trust me....when western universities with links to chula put up a stink western values and western money WILL work herewink.png
Note to Thailand Tourism: send out a directive telling all Thai students and teachers that they are causing loss of face to Thailand which, from other reading can cause them to be taken to court. Additionally, they cause loss of Thailand earning income from tourists who are aware of the negative history of Hitler, the Nazi movement and the genocide.

Again, why is what Hitler did more important than what dozens of other genocidal dictators did?

Hitler did what all leaders do, kill innocent nobodies instead of the enemy's leaders. Hitler saw Germany's enemy the international bankers that were crippling Germany with repayments after WW1. Unfortunately most of the bankers were Jewish.

Because he was able to convey his power across borders. The other nut jobs in the list were largely confined to their home countries, but he managed to manipulate his power across a whole continent.

Unfortunately this is still true today. Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot killed their people at times when doing this was either politically useful (Cold War) or considered the lesser evil (keeping the Vietnamese in check). Bosnia, Rwanda, Iraqi Kurds were ignored either until it was politically useful to intervene, or until domestic pressure made intervention necessary. In all fairness, most western nations do not go to war lightly these days or have huge standing armies. WW2 wasn't fought in the West to prevent evil, it was really to secure a balance of power between the white nations. One must not forget that England, France, Belgium and the Netherlands all ruled over non-white colonies of hundreds of millions of people without a worry about legitimacy or morality of doing so. No wonder that the thought of becoming a colony of Germany themselves was such a horrendous prospect for them.

Sadly, most colonies had to fight for their freedom after 1945. Western powers did not see the humanitarian need to release them on their own. But they were militarily and spiritually weakened after the losses of WW2. Losses inflicted to them by Hitler's armies. For the colonized peoples of the East, could that make Hitler an agent of their own liberation? I've run too often into strangers who gave me the "Hitler good!" thumbs up. I really wish that evil were not a matter of perspective, but I think it is.
  12. Come, study at Chula... we are the best in Thailand... we guarantee to make you as benighted as Adolph.

    Says Assoc. Professor Supacorn Dispan,

Dean, Fine and Applied Arts Faculty, Chulalongkorn.

P.S. and some lunatic here said Chula is on par with Oxford, Harvard, Yale and Cambridge... Really!

P.P.S. Baht is bound to go up this month...

IIRC what was said is that Chula is to Thailand as Oxford etc. are to the UK, USA etc. Ivy league. That's very different.
