Thailand anticipates scorching summer with temperatures up to 44.5°C
Denim replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Nothing new. We had about 6 weeks of this kind of temperature last hot season. Usually , one or two days of this is noticable but last year it seemed never ending. I actually saw 45 on our thermometer on our front balcony in the shade a couple of times !!! Had to take the rubbish out at a run . Dogs hiding under the house all day , under our air con bedroom. -
Joint Bank Account with Thai partner
Denim replied to Negita43's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
Similar issue to me compounded by the fact that we live in a rural village , 7 kilometers from town and my wife can't drive. She has enough personal savings to get by should I die but why just leave my 400,000 for a bank to enjoy if it's going to be a hassle for her to do probate I have decided to get a halfway decent home safe that can be bolted down and keep half or more of my cash in it, just leaving enough in the bank to enjoy having an ATM card. This way , if I die it will not be an issue for her. On the other hand ....if she dies first a bigger headache for me having to sell her house etc but at least I can drive and have the tenacity to pursue things. -
Thai gold prices plummet, buyers encouraged to act

One persons ' substantial ' is anothers minor blip on a graph. -
Disregarding other aspects , who was there first ? The pianist or the chinese ? If the piano was already in place and the guy was playing then first come first served principle. The Chinese came along afterwards apparently which was their choice. If they find something they don't like they could have moved on just as easily as they arrived. Entitled behavior much.

Joint Bank Account with Thai partner
Denim replied to Negita43's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
There was a thread on this very subject last week. The legal position is that even if you have a joint account with your partner ,should one of you die the account is frozen and the surviving holder has no legal right to withdraw funds from the account. It has to go to probate and the court will decide and issue the relevant legal documents to release the money in the joint account to whoever has the right to it. Of course, the surviving partner could use an ATM card to withdraw the funds but this could lead to problems later on since strictly speaking it is illegal even though some people might get away with it in the short term. -
Non-Buddhist households: What about monks' alms, spirit houses?

They like to hedge their bets it's true. As for the Zebras ??? They remain a mystery to me and most Thai. -

Surge in Covid-19 infections and rising death toll in Thailand
Denim replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Really. Terrible reporting or non existent proof reading. There has been a nasty flu bug going around our village with many catching it myself included. Sore throat, fever , lots of coughing up of phlegm and even a weird chill period with my teeth chattering from cold . Other usual symptoms. Three home covid tests all negative. I was only rough for a day and a night but the wife got it from me and has been really bad for 3 days. Just better this morning. I am just wondering if the home testing kits can detect any new variants. -
Parents of underage Aranyaprathet murder suspects indicted today

There's the rub. They stick while the case is under media scrutiny but can easily wither on the vine further down the road after the dust has settled. -
Non-Buddhist households: What about monks' alms, spirit houses?
Denim replied to henrik2000's topic in General Topics
Monks only stop at homes where someone is waiting outside to make merit and give alms. No force or persuasion or stigma if you don't bother. In our rural soi there are more that don't bother than do. Up to you. Spirit houses have nothing to do with Buddhism are also totally optional. My wife won't have a little spirit house even as a garden ornament as if not maintained the spirits can get nasty and turn malevolent. Best not to bother is her opinion. If you want to live in a rural village speaking Thai will make the experience a lot more rewarding and you will get to know some nice people. -
I have a simple rule of thumb which is , when in doubt , get a second or third opinion. One thing is for sure , with cancer better to get on it sooner rather than later. It is a common killer in our neck of the woods. As for hospitals , sometimes I have had better and more honest treatment at government hospitals compared to pvt ones where getting money from patients is an important part of the ' business '

Illegal Meatball Factories Raided in Pathum Thani
Denim replied to snoop1130's topic in Central Thailand News
The absolute worst must be these things , marinated in car fumes , road grit and air polution. How anybody in their right mind could contemplate munching on these beats me. -
In a container I guess and lovingly stored in an air con room. When I was a kid there were always a lot of old vinyl records knocking around. Many were with the dog and gramophone label ' His masters voice ' Never knew what what music they had, not interested at that age. My sister used to melt them a bit in the oven and then bend them into fruit bowl shapes.

You missed my first post. As explained, it's not about music quality at all. It's about It's vintage value, hence it's collectability. Like you, for me it was about the music hence no attachment to my old vinyl records. Nowadays I am happy to download from YouTube and play via USB when driving my car or listening at home.

Asking why someone would want vinyl when modern options offer far superior sound quality is like asking why someone would want an E-Type Jag when modern cars are much better. Why would you want an antique inlaid wooden table when IKEA have modern ones in all shapes and sizes.

Hug ? Some of those old 45's have a hole in the middle big enough to .......on second thoughts , hugging probably safer.

Unlikely. To make sure that I didn't drop a boll+ck , I spent several hours on ebay checking to see how much each album was going for. I knew I was selling cheap but did not want to lose a real packet on anything really valuable. Nonetheless, the buyer got a bargain since although my copy of Dark Side of the Moon was good for about 50 quid I had a limited time to sell. Very much a case of ' Everything must go ' !! https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=Pink Floyd vinyl album dark side of the moon&_sacat=0&_odkw=Pink Floyd vinyl album&_osacat=0

Correct. I could have gotten more had I been prepared to travel to London but my mother lives on an island and the cost did not justify the effort. Secondly , I just wanted to get rid of them quickly as a job lot rather than try to sell the more valuable ones on ebay which would have been time consuming and a hassle to post. Hence I put them up cheaply which probably accounts for all the interest, even on the Isle of Wight !

Back in the UK vinyl records are collectables. People are not soley interested in the music on the vinyl but more because of their growing historical and nostalgic value. For example , a first pressing of Pink Floyds Dark Side of the Moon can and does sell for 1000 pounds ! Back in the UK in September I decided to clear out a lot of my stuff from my mothers house where it was stored. Adverts in the local paper for all sorts of thingws and I sold about 70% of the things I put up. The item that sold the fastest and easiest was my 40 album collection from the 70's and 80's for which asked and received 160 pounds from the first interested party. The phone continued to ring for a week after I had sold them and didn't stop until I took the advert down
