  1. I had to check Wikipedia: a 4 wheeled vehicle?

So is yours a quad bike or is it a small car? Well it doesn't really matter, you will need emissions tests done and a heavy import duty too, so its not worth the effort/money.

You are better off finding something similar in Thailand that are approved.

  2. I bought a Honda City second hand. Before the deal was done we took the car to Honda for check which in the end make me believe that the odometer had not been tampered with and that the car was original and no major accident involved.

So far I am very happy with the car. :)

Good luck and be careful. :D

  3. Hi corkman,

I can understand you are confused, so was I when I were out shopping for a car (not new).

Regarding safety, if you buy one of the top models they will have double airbags which I think is a must.

In your last post you mention 4 cars, 2 Honda's and 2 Toyota's.

Well these car are made here which made they easy and cheap to fix if something breaks down, which is not very likely but you never know.

Among these 4 cars I would say it is down to taste which model you prefer.

If I was you I would go to a car rental and rent say a City for one week and thereafter rent a Viros for a week. There are topics here which car is the best and bla bla :)

The city and viros are basically the same cars from 2 different manufacturers, so if you drive each for a week or so you will probably know which you prefer.

  4. When I ran my 2009 Fino in, I never exceeded 60 km/h for the first 500 km, then the next 500 km max 80 km/h. Try not to keep the same revs. for too long, so vary the speed.

Today at 6000 km my Fino runs very well, often exceeding 100 km/h when going flat out and acceleration very good too.

I only run benzine 91 on the bike, never gasohol the mechanics advised against it.

Enjoy your Fino, it's a great little bike :)

  5. The Tiger bikes seems to be very rare like their name bothers in the jungle, sadly.

I ordered recently a Retro with side car and the "rig" is delayed again. I get the impression that they will first make it (especially the side car edition) when they get a order.

They have by the way a Boxer 250 in the show room here in Pattaya but don't know if it is sold or what, it is a good looking bike.

  6. Well 200k won't get her much. If that is the max she will/can spend better buy something that is very common in Thailand. She likes Toyota's and Honda's good, they are cheap to repair here and a lot of second hand spare parts available.

Unless she can find a car that she know is in very good condition for that price, better spend say 150- 160k on the car and have the engine/gearbox swapped with a reconditioned one.

I wish her good luck with the project :)

  7. I would strongly dispute the "very easy to do".. Its possible but not easy..

    I must agree on that.

Mike it would be best for you (if you want a new HD) to buy at the official HD importer, sad thing that it will cost app. double as in USA,

but it will at least give you the warranty on the bike if you buy it here.

I want the new 48 Sportster badly and the price will be somewhere between 770-900k bath and app 10.5k $ in USA, not fair huh :) but then again cheap compared to my native Denmark. :D

  8. Yes it is necessary in my opinion.

Depending of your GF's car off course but normally not so expensive to have a A class insurance where bail bond is normal included.

If you hurt somebody when driving the car rest assured that the injured party will demand compensation especially when you are a foreigner so for peace in mind get the insurance and it's only app. 1k pr month or so for a standard car. :)

  9. aussibbe is on the right track regarding/precautions checking a used car.

I myself however bought second hand and so far I didn't regret it.

I saved app 200k compared to a new model, but I am only driving app. 10-12k km pr year so I find it a waste of money to buy a new.

I bought mine at a small dealer here in Pattaya and I asked the sales guy if we can take the car to Honda for check before doing any dealing and they said ok no problem.

But as mentioned be careful & careful.

  10. Yes try the search tool, this have been discussed earlier several times here.

New or second hand basically the same if you buy from a dealer.

Minimum a tourist visa is required, then you can obtain a letter from immigration that you live in the Kingdom. To get that you will have to show immi that you live here, rental contract on your apartment or house book will normally do.

Be extremely careful when buying a second hand car, if you don't know your way around cars bring somebody that do. Odometer fixing are widely used here.

When buying your car check that the mandatory insurance are still valid, the dealer will help you changing ownership. Then bring your car to your insurance broker and they will tell you how much for a full insurance take pictures and so on.

The full insurance is extremely important especially for an ex pat.

This is a very rough explanation, better covered elsewhere.

Good luck finding a good used car (which I had). :)

  11. I got a 06 Honda City and I can only recommend it if you want a good modest car as you write in your start topic.

We just drove 500 km in it to my wife's village with 1 infant and 2 adults on board and it was very comfortable, cruising at 120-140 when conditions allowed.

I am actually looking forward to the drive back to Pattaya on Wednesday, :) and I mean the driving and not what I been missing when up here in the quiet country side. :D

You should off course buy the top model with all the whistles-ABS, double air bags and so on.

Good luck finding/buying the car for your needs :D

  12. I have been using TOT also here in Naklua and the experience is mixed, sometimes good speed and sometimes very slow. Good thing is that they show up fairly quick if you complain or loose your connection which happened twice during 2-3 years subscription.

  13. I think you should rent first and see if you like the location. Much easier to move on when renting. I noticed when going to Jomtien on an evening ride that some condo's are almost empty, I wouldn't like to live in one of those, feeling like you live in a ghost building maybe the only person around in one floor brr. :)

  14. Cool

No wonder you had a sore arse. Small bikes are generally better suited for short trips, but it can be done as you have just proven.

Another guy on this forum rode from Pattaya -Changmai-Pattaya on a cheap Honda Wave.

If I go further than 20 km I take my Harley to avoid a sore arse, he-he, but I am an old man at 47 now so I prefer comfort.

    Keep riding

  15. The Fino is a fine little bike, we use ours everyday and often do 30 km per day around Pattaya area, both 2 up and solo. Good acceleration, buzzing around heavy traffic a pleasure compared to my HD.

If you like the look, buy one, end of story :)

  16. I would not sell my Harley for 10 Japanese Bikes! I love the sound, I love the brand and I don't care which bikes others are riding. What a senseless thread!

    Cheers

Yes you are right and I agree, but just pisses me off with all these HD haters, who only writes bullsh!t and never rode one them selves and some aren't even bike riders but 4 wheel drivers (me too by the way).

I could write for a long time why I prefer a HD anytime, but whats the point, they still don't get it. I never slam other brands, all bikes and brands are good in their own way depending on what you want to use the bike for and where in the world you live.

Ohh one last thing, why don't you HD haters take a look at this excellent web-site: http://horizonsunlimited.com/forwood/

    Cheers to everybody. :)
